TWS1

The Macallan 26 Year Old
Platinum Old & Rare

One of only 60 bottles filled from a single sherry butt on 25th May 2018, this Speyside single malt was distilled at the original Macallan distillery in June 1991. Matured for almost three decades, this cask strength release from independent bottler Hunter Laing & Co. was bottled on the historic day the new Macallan distillery was officially opened.

Mellow on the nose with dried fruits and a clear sherry influence. The palate is smooth and sweet, with creamy sherried notes before a dry finish with a touch of oak spice.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Kilchoman – Scotch Whisky News

PHIL

https://youtu.be/zexa2I2qm_s

A beloved little distillery on Islay that overcame a lot of odds to be considered one of the finest whiskies produced, in a region with so much intimidating competition, most of us would shy away. Producing less than 100,000 liters a year, Kilchoman have fought and worked their way through the ranks of the whisky hierarchy. Starting out in 2005 and already having huge success with the quality of their new make spirit, we now see them thirteen years later. Whisky is hitting the double digit figures and demand is increasing more and more. One of only 238 bottles produced, this single cask selection, bottled by The Whisky Shop really does show off the depth to the spirit produced at Kilchoman. Full bodied, spicy, well balance and a change in flavour that is reminiscent of some of the best Islay whiskies I’ve ever had. Switching from BBQ smoke and peat into creamy white chocolate with hazelnuts and a wonderful hit of salt as well. A true contender for whisky of the year!

Stefanie Anderson crowned winner of the Talisker ‘Race to Skye’ bartender competition

Stefanie Anderson of Bon Vivant, Edinburgh, has won the acclaimed title of the 2018 ‘Race to Skye’ champion, making her the second ever winner of Talisker’s annual bartender competition.

FEATURE

Talisker has named bartender from Edinburgh, Stefanie Anderson, as the 2018 ‘Race to Skye’ champion. Following a successful performance in four challenges over two days, Stefanie has been awarded the title of honorary Talisker Ambassador to support the Scotch whisky brand in telling its story and communicating the on-going Made by the Sea campaign.

As the first female to win the competition and the second ever winner, Stefanie joins the ranks of a number of inspiring and talented women within the whisky industry.

Stefanie Anderson commented“I’m delighted to have won the Race to Skye. I admire the brand in so many ways so I am incredibly grateful to have been a part of the experience and on top of it, won! The competition was tough and everybody presented amazing serves and real originality behind their stories. This is just an amazing way to round off the trip and I’m thrilled to return and carry the Talisker torch.”

Over the course of the competition the finalists were put through their paces, taking part in four challenges over two days. These included a ‘Mystery Challenge’ designed to test the skills of each competitor’s discerning nose, palate and core distillery knowledge, a ‘Cocktail Food Pairing’ at the iconic Gleneagles Hotel, the ultimate whisky knowledge challenge, ‘Mastermind’ hosted by GB Whisky Brand Ambassador, Colin Dunn and, finally, each bartender was required to present their Talisker Made by the Sea Signature Serve to the panel of judges at the Talisker Distillery Visitor Centre with seven minutes to present the crafted cocktail.

Scottish Malts Ambassador at Diageo Reserve, Stevie Martin said: “Single malt whisky is fast becoming a main stay for the finest cocktail bartenders in the country. The Race to Skye again showed the possibilities and versatility of the Talisker brand when in the hands of the finest talent around. We had exceptional drinks and memorable stories from all seven finalists as well as an incredible few days travelling the Scottish wilderness. Our winner, Stefanie Anderson from the Bon Vivant in Edinburgh, performed incredibly well across all four challenges and we are looking forward to working with her on Talisker single malt whisky moving forward.”

Now in its second year, the Talisker Race to Skye bartender competition challenges bartenders from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Bournemouth, Bristol and London to create a cocktail that embodied the Talisker’s new ‘Made by the Sea’ brand platform. Cambus 27 Year Old 1983 vintage Lowland single grain Scotch whiskey. Single cask #701513 bottled April 2011 by The Dead Whisky Society. 217 numbered bottles. John Moubry commissioned Cambus Distillery in 1806 at Cambus near Alloa to produce malt and grain whisky. He was amongst a group of contemporary distillers ‘paid’ to close their works for a number of years by the Stein and Haig distilling family in order to enable the later to maintain their monopoly in the exportation of Scottish spirits into the London gin market. Cambus Distillery is a lost Lowlands grain whiskey distillery having closed in 1993 although its whiskey remains available and the site is occupied by a Diageo cask filling works. Hunter Laing Sovereign Cambus grain whiskies are extremely popular.

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive bottling, Edradour (Ballechin) 12 Year Old 2005 Signatory Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

Edradour-Ballechin-12-Year-Old-2005-Signatory-Exclusive glass

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive bottling,  Edradour (Ballechin) 12 Year Old 2005 Signatory Exclusive.

Specialist online whisky shop, TheWhiskyBarrel.com, is proud to release something very exciting from Edradour thanks to our friends at Signatory Vintage.

Sherry cask whiskies and peated whiskies both enjoy strong followings and when brought together these two opposites certainly can work but rarely come together in mainstream Scotch whisky. Ballechin is the name given to heavily peated spirit from Edradour. Combined with a sherry cask, the result is a peated sherry cask Scotch whisky exclusive to The Whisky Barrel.

Edradour Distillery sits at Milton of Edradour near Pitlochery and was formed in 1825 by a group of eight local farmers. Edradour is still just a farm sized distillery but Signatory Vintage produce wonderful results including the Edradour 10 Year Old and Sherry Cask Ibisco.

The Edradour (Ballechin) 12 Year Old is a true example of great independent Scotch whisky. Distilled on the 15th of August 2005 and bottled on the 19th of July 2018, this peated malt was matured in a second fill sherry hogshead #160.

Just 291 bottles were yielded exclusively for TheWhiskyBarrel.com. An un-chillfiltered whisky with a cask strength of 61.5% and of natural colour.

Available exclusively from The Whisky Barrel, shipping to customers Worldwide including the United States of America, Canada and Japan.

The Gateshead Whisky News
with Gateshead TWL Correspondent, Lee Connors

Gateshead FC’s unbeaten run has now gone a whole three games! AND, it’s time for your weekly whisky news update from the only person you know who would care about that! You lucky lot, take it away Connas…

  • Teeling Bring It Home…

Teeling Single Pot Still will be the first Dublin-distilled whisky available since the 1970’s! With a mash bill of 50:50 Malted and Unmalted barley, the 2015 vintage has been matured in ex-Muscat oak, and you will be able to bid for a bottle at auction from 30th August until 10th September…

  • More Irish Giants…

Distribution company When We Were Giants have been appointed to Knappogue Castle Single Malt Irish Whiskey in the UK and Ireland, hope this means we’ll see more of them!

  • Ailsa Bay 1.2. Re-Sweetened!

Gordon and MacPhail’s Lowland distillery Ailsa Bay have announced their second release. Ailsa Bay 1.2 Sweet Smoke has been designed to be the perfect balance between smoke and sweet flavours, and will be available next month for around £55. I’d like a crack at this one!

  • Dist’ell of a line up…

Distell have announced six limited releases from across their portfolio of Scottish distilleries…

With the intention of training young people in the local area, Royal Lochnagar have partnered up with The Prince’s Foundation to launch its “Get Into Hospitality” outreach programme at Dumfries House. Fair play one and all…

  • Lagavulin Dig For History, Not Just Peat…

The Lagavulin 200th Legacy Fund has enabled Scottish charity Islay Heritage to undertake an excavation at Dunyvaig Castle next to the distillery. This sounds cool…

(NB, sources confirm that this has nothing to do with a certain whisky evangelist burying a case of lager for safekeeping somewhere on Islay many years ago, which is still unaccounted for.)

  • Worrying News Out Of Invergordon…

Pay cuts and job losses could be on the cards for a significant proportion of the employees at Invergordon Distillery as the premises are “modernised”…

  • Macallan Fracas…

It would seem that some over-enthusiastic customers caused a bit of a to-do at the distillery launch of Macallan’s Genesis… Stay Safe, people…

  • Pulteney Revealed!

After last week’s teasersOld Pulteney have confirmed their new range! Interesting…

  • Auction Stuff…

Massive prices are expected for these rare Glenlivet and Macallan bottlings… Eddie’s on holiday, otherwise I’m sure he’d be right in the running!

Loch Fyne Whiskies “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CASK!” – Scotch Whisky News

AA LFW Header

It’s all about the cask!

The Magic of the Wood

There are many factors that influence the taste of the dram in your hand – the strain of barley, the method of firing the kiln, the water used by the distillery, the climate of the warehouses, the length of maturation and of course the type of cask.

This week we have two new cask-finished expressions from Deanston and its sister distillery Tobermory, available to pre-order. Each one has been aged for more than a decade with two years ‘finishing’ in ex-wine casks. The influence is striking and both are limited editions so get your order in while you can!
