Cadenhead’s London “Small Batch 21st Release” – Scotch Whisky News

AA Cadenheads

Cadenhead1

We’re Having Another Birthday!

Yes folks, we at Cadenhead’s like to mark social days or events, so this is our big one for the year!

SMALL BATCH 21st RELEASE IS NOW AVAILABLE

Before we go into the release list it’s worth going over a few drams we will explain about the small batch for our new customers! Cadenhead’s small batch is a by-monthly release that sits alongside the Authentic single cask selection.

Small batch can be from a single cask or barrel or several cask married together for example Knockdhu 11 is made from 3 casks Macduff 11 is 1 cask!

Why do they do this? Simple really because it’s all about the taste profile. Some of most legendary whiskies have come out under the small batch range, this season will see a whole new range of legendary whiskies.

I will also list a few of the archive whiskies from the range we are releasing on the web shop!

Lets talk about age and brand!

What is it that makes you buy a whisky, is it the age or distillery or both?

We see a huge spike in demand for the usual suspects so lets dig a little deeper into the drams you miss out on! From this seasons release I am going to say Macduff 11 & Knockdhu 11 alongside the Tomintoul 11! Yes they are young but they taste so much older!

From other releases we have the following small batch whiskies…

LINKWOOD 1992 24 Years Old 50.9% -70CL- HOGSHEAD CASKS

AULTMORE 20 YEARS OLD 1997 51.8% – 70CL – HOGSHEAD CASKS

GLEN SPEY 22 YEARS OLD 57.9% HOGSHEAD CASKS

While some of you know of the distilleries some do not! So its normal to feel unsure about trying them out!

In our tasting room you will usually find a dram or 3 you have never tied before so with that in mind check out the store in the coming few Saturdays we will have open house events upstairs in-between the Tasting experience events where we will try out the lesser known and younger drams!

Mind you our younger drams are older then most other malts on the general market!

The LONDON TASTING PANEL = (LTP)

Has been taking place over several days and nights for the new range!

The general consensus is possibly the best response to a release I have seen since the early 2000’s every dram had fans every taste made them smile especially with the younger vintages!

To truly get a proper perspective the tastes can and will be blind so they have no idea what the distillery is age or ABV so as to give a truly honest tasting note.

Check out the new range (click the links below) and tasting notes online today.

New Faultline Mortlach & Bunnahabhain at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

kl_logo_trans

KL3

1995 Mortlach 22 Year Old Faultline First Fill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Cask Single Malt Whisky (750ml) We almost never see Mortlach available for sale by the cask in Scotland. If we do it’s almost certainly in a third or fourth fill barrel and almost certainly young and expensive. Even the underwhelming NAS bottling from the distillery still costs $100. Why is it so expensive and hard to get? That answer starts with a J and ends with a Walker. There’s just too much money in that special blend to let these casks out of the system. When they do make it out, there’s usually a reason. On the rarest of occasion, likely the result some fortuitous clerical error or bad bets by a London executive, we might happen across something like this. Two decades old Mortlach always raises eyebrows around here. Tell me it’s been aged in a fresh sherry butt, can be sold for around $100, and tastes amazing? I’m looking like a Vince McMahon Reaction meme -almost a wrestling reference. Even more exciting is that truly is Mortlach for the masses. Sometimes the beefy gnarly quality of the distillery, the result of an unusual multi-still distillation process, can overwhelm the uninitiated. This casks, however, is so fun and forgiving with all that wonderful Mortlach meat playing second fiddle to the dense sherry and dark malt flavors. There’s no question that this is going to be the cask, among all our recent Faultline releases to consider stocking deep. It’s very unlikely that we’ll ever see value and quality converging quite like this again. Let’s all pray that we can keep pulling casks this good. $119.99 View

1989 Bunnahabhain 28 Year Old Faultline First Fill Sherry Hogshead Cask Strength Single Cask Single Malt Whisky (750ml) We’ve had an incredible set of old Bunnahabhains over the last two years. This isn’t our first Bunnah under the Faultline label, that was released in 2013 and was a steal for $100. We’ve bottled Milroys, Hepburns, Exclusive Malts, and multiple Old Particulars in the last few seasons. The sale of the distillery a few years ago has certainly sparked some house cleaning at the gorgeous old distillery in the cove north of Port Askaig. While we’ve had many exemplary old offerings from this special distillery, none represent quite as much value as this special cask. 1989 was an unusual year for Bunnahabhain. Something unusual happened that year, as a significant number of old casks from the vintage have turned out malt whisky at considerably lower proof than is typical. Perhaps they’d procured an excess number of casks that vintage and decided to fill at lower proof or maybe all the stuff we’re seeing today was stored in EXTREMELY humid conditions, thereby encouraging the evaporation at a higher rate. We may never know why these whiskies are so different from other vintages, but its obvious after tasting several that something special was going on. The heights achieved here are totally unique and deliver an experience unlike any other. Fill that into a fresh sherry hogshead and you’ve got what is likely one of the most interesting cask we’ve ever bottled. What’s even more incredible is that the “Bunnahabhaininess” still shines through after nearly decades. Oh and that price, dang $149.99 View

KL3

1989 Mortlach 28 Year Old Faultline First Fill Sherry Hogshead Cask Strength Single Cask Single Malt Whisky (750ml)e’ve always looked to make Faultline about providing exquisite values for our customers. This is the third Mortlach we’ve procured under the Faultline brand and the oldest to date. The last time we had Mortlach it was nearly the precise opposite style of this wild cask. Three years ago we found a 25 year old Mortlach in a refill hoggie and bottled it at over 60% alcohol. If you’re lucky, maybe you have that bottle in your cellar to compare to this one which is opposite in style in almost every way. Filled almost three decades ago into a fresh sherry hogshead, it must have been stored in an extremely humid warehouse since it’s only 84 proof at full strength. This is real deal Mortlach with the savory beefy quality front and center. It’s something like walking into an old wooden house, perfectly preserved antique leather furniture, mahogany cabinetry and in the kitchen a great big pot of stew bubbles slowly on the stove. Inviting, warm, complex and yet somehow familiar – there will be very few whiskies comparable to this one available this year and absolutely NONE anywhere near this ridiculous price point. We could probably sell this whisky for twice the price and still convince everyone that it’s a steal. Though it’s not as approachable and universally likeable as its younger sibling, this cask will undoubtedly some of our diehard customers as one of the finest we’ve ever procured. $149.99 View

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive bottlings from Dumbarton and Invergordon.

Specialist online whisky shop, TheWhiskyBarrel.com, is proud to release two fantastic exclusive bottlings. Both have been carefully selected by The Whisky Barrel under the guidance of Hunter Laing & Company Ltd.

Dumbarton 30 Year Old 1988 Sovereign Exclusive

The Dumbarton 30 Year Old 1988 Exclusive was bottled at cask strength by Hunter Laing in March 2018. Aged in a bourbon barrel, this Dumbarton is a light gold whisky with a sweet nose of tropical fruits, vanilla and salted caramel.

Dumbarton Distillery was a single grain distillery built in Dumbartonshire in the 1930s, at which time it was the largest in Scotland. Dumbarton closed in 2002 and has since been demolished, making The Whisky Barrel’s exclusive Dumbarton 30 Year Old 1988 Sovereign a very special addition to any collection.

Invergordon 40 Year Old 1978 Sovereign Exclusive

The Invergordon 40 Year Old 1978 Exclusive was bottle at cask strength, again by Hunter Laing in March 2018. It too was aged in a bourbon barrel but this whisky has a burnished gold look to it and a rich nose of blackberries, apples and toffee.

Invergordon Distillery is the most northerly of Scotland’s grain distilleries and was established in 1959. It is a favourite of blenders so it is very interesting to see a single grain Scotch come out; definitely something special.

Both of these exclusives would make perfect birthday or anniversary gifts and both are packed full of rich flavour.

Available exclusively from The Whisky Barrel, shipping to customers Worldwide including the United States of America, Canada and Japan.

Exclusive new whisky tour of Edinburgh launched – Scotch Whisky News

Mercat-Tours

Exclusive new whisky tour of Edinburgh launched

As plans for Edinburgh’s first single malt whisky distillery in 90 years and a £150 million pound immersive whisky visitor experience in the historic capital city are announced, award winning storytellers, Mercat Tours are encouraging locals and visitors alike to celebrate World Whisky Day (Saturday 19 May 2018) with their exclusive Edinburgh Tour and Whisky Experience (new for 2018).

Taking place at 4pm every Saturday (including World Whisky Day itself), a kilted Mercat tour guide will tell the true story of the city that founded the world’s largest Scottish whisky company and the people that helped whisky production. At the end of the tour, participants will retire to Megget’s cellar in Edinburgh’s historic Underground Vaults (which can only be accessed on a Mercat Tour) for a complimentary candlelit single malt whisky tasting from Scotland’s four whisky producing regions.

Explaining what people can experience on this new tour, Kat Brogan, Managing Director said:

“Walking around Edinburgh’s historic streets, we will begin by telling the story of how King James IV of Scotland and I of Britain, who has been referred to as the world’s first famous whisky drinker, granted a monopoly to Edinburgh for the manufacture of aqua vitae or whisky. He believed in the medicinal properties of whisky which was produced by the Guild of Surgeon Barbers; it’s just one of the transformations of whisky over the centuries.”

“We’ll also tell our guests about Edinburgh’s role in taking whisky to the rest of the world, how the 19th century changed whisky production in Scotland, and of the locals that embraced whisky, from George Ballantine on South Bridge to Andrew Usher Jr at Nicolson Street, the pioneers that created their own whiskies and exported worldwide.”

Indeed, this Mercat tour will cover everything anyone needs to know about the uisge beatha (the water of life) – from how whisky is made, to the effects that different elements such as water, barley, peat and the cask have on the production process. Participants can nose and taste their way through the whisky regions, with sample whiskies from Speyside, Highland, Islay and Lowland distilleries.

The tour costs £30 per person and is for adults aged 18+.

Also new for 2018, Mercat Tours has launched a Scottish Storytelling Supper which costs £60 per person, inclusive of all entertainment, 3 course Scottish meal and a dram of Scottish malt whisky.

Notes

Mercat Tours is Edinburgh’s original five-star history and ghost tour company. Established over 30 years ago, the company’s accredited guides bring Edinburgh’s stories to life every day.

The company was first established in 1985 by history teacher, Des Brogan, and three other history teachers, when they identified there were no other existing walking tours of Edinburgh. They researched and created four walking tours, with two of them (Secrets of the Royal Mile and Ghosts & Ghouls) still running today.

Today, Mercat Tours is run by Des’ daughter, Kat Brogan, and now offers a wide range of tours to suit any budget, group size and interest.

Mercat Tours is the only Edinburgh tours company with access to The Blair Street Underground Vaults, which were filled with rubble in the early 19th century and were only rediscovered in the 1980s. Since then they’ve become known as one of Edinburgh’s most famous haunted sites and offer a fascinating insight into Edinburgh’s underground life.

Groups are limited to an absolute maximum of 30 people, with tours running every day and in all weather. With each tour leaving from the Mercat Cross on the Royal Mile in the heart of the city, visitors will find the city’s shops and restaurants within easy reach. Tours vary in length from 45 minutes to two hours, with specially tailored tours available for groups.

All tours leave from the Mercat Cross on the Royal Mile – next to St Giles Cathedral.

There are tours for every generation (from age 5 and up).

More information on the accessibility on Mercat Tours can be found in its Access Statement.

French, German, Italian and Spanish tours are also available for a limited number of tours. Written translations are also available in Russian and Mandarin.

Awards

VisitScotland Five Star rating – first achieved in 2007 and maintained ever since The Green Tourism Business Scheme – awarded gold every year since 2012 for the company’s commitment to the environment and economic sustainability.

Scottish Business in the Community – named SME of the Year in 2014 for the company’s commitment to improving Scots’ lives.

Scottish Thistle Award 2016 – recognised for Skills and Training Development, as a third of Mercat Tours team members have been with the company for over 10 years.

Irresistible Islay — New “Old Particular” Casks from Bowmore & Bunnahabhain at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

KL1

Irresistible Islay — New “Old Particular” Casks from Bowmore & Bunnahabhain

Our “Old Particular” program continues to be the go-to source for countless Scotch fans. No where else can you find such unique and rare expressions of Scotch at such competitive prices. Central to this program’s success is, of course, the quality of the whisky and the very strict set of criteria when selecting “Old Particular” casks. Central to our decision making is how well a bottling reflects its region, the distiller, and its age. This isn’t to say we are looking for cookie-cutter expressions. On the contrary, it’s expected that every bottling have its own unique profile and special flair. But if a whisky travels too far in one direction or is otherwise out-of-balance, then we take a pass.

The newest additions to our “Old Particular” portfolio are perfect examples of what we look for in a Scotch, or more specifically, Islay Scotch. The Bowmore 20 Year Old “Old Particular” has all the power and concentration one would expect from this historic distillery, while at the same time revealing a delicate and nuanced expression. For longtime Bowmore fans, it’s a can’t miss dram. The Bunnahabhain 25 Year Old, having been aged in a sherry hogshead, has the concomitant notes of oloroso, caramelized fruit, and salted nuts. Richly textured and with shockingly layered complexity, it punches far above its weight. The prices for both are downright amazing when you consider their age and pedigree. Our “Old Particular” bottlings never last on our shelves and we fully expect this pair to move at a very fast clip, so don’t think on this one for too long.

KL01

1997 Bowmore 20 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($149.99)

Another classic 20 year old Bowmore beauty from our friends at Old Particular has landed to make 2018 another banner year for our whisky import program. This 52.7% ABV stunner packs a healthy dollop of smoke along with tropical fruits and notes of citrus with plenty of length through the finish. The peat isn’t nearly as pronounced in this expression as it was in the previous edition, so fans of Talisker or other mildly peated malts might want to take a look at this one. The finish is sweetly smoked with a coastal sea air element, notes of vanilla, and lots of spice. It’s hard to go wrong with classic Bowmore at full proof, especially at this age.

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 12, 2018

This 20 year old Bowmore is more like an edition of the Compass Box Flaming Heart than a concentrated single cask expression. It’s so balanced with mild peatiness and plenty of sweet vanilla to add richness on the finish. Fans of more gentle Islay flavors will go gaga for this as everything is in perfect harmony here, even at 52.7%. Add this to your bar at your own peril: it’s too delicious to sip slowly.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 18, 2018

If I had to pick one distillery to drink for the rest of my life, Bowmore would definitely be in the running. They do some solid and safe stuff at the distillery, but where it truly shines are the single casks. I’m not sure why we’ve had such incredible luck with this distillery, but we’ve literally purchased every casks we’ve tasted distilled in the last several years (save the 1971 at Signatory, but only because it was $1000+ a bottle). While there was a weird period at the distillery from the early 80s to the mid 90s, they seem to have cycled through those casks and we’re not seeing the perfumed weird stuff any longer. What we have seen has been so delicious and diverse I just never get tired of them. Even more impressive is that we’re able to get old Islay whisky from a blue chip distillery and not charge $300 a bottle! Even though we’ve done two others this year already this cask was so different and absolutely delectable we couldn’t resist it. You may think you have enough Bowmore, but you’re wrong. It opens with a classic Bowmore nose, medium intensity peat, sea spray, wet earth, bright citrus fruit and herbs. Crystalline and absolute purity on the palate with the sweet tropical fruit, citrus peel and smoke working together in gorgeous harmony. The first whisky for Springtime! I like this better than the last cask by a few ticks and with a drop of water it’s one of the more inviting Bowmore we’ve ever bottled.

Alex Schroeder | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 12, 2018

I haven’t been so excited about single barrel Islay since our last Bowmore, and this is every bit as good as that was! It is creamy and delicate on the nose, with notes of orange marmalade and just a hint of peat. On the palate, it’s incredibly velvety and smooth, with fresh notes of tropical fruit, a creamy malt texture and an underlying peat that is robust without being invasive with perfect integration. This is the best deal in Scotch we have, so it certainly won’t last long.

Gary Westby | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 12, 2018

The salty and sweet twenty year old Bowmore has all of the charm of the best of Islay along with the complexity and length that only time will bring. If you like the natural style of non-Sherry influenced Islay, but want the texture and interest of an older malt, this is a perfect choice.

KL1

1991 Bunnahabhain 25 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($159.99)

This 25 year Bunnahabhain isn’t just from a “refill hogshead” barrel, it’s from a sherry hogshead and the dark, rich color of the malt lets you know at first glance that this is going to be one supple dram. Bunnahabhain, unpeated in its classic expression, takes on a completely different character in sherry than its Islay counterparts. While sherried Bowmore tends toward savory campfire notes and sherried Kilchoman towards sweet peat, sherried Bunnahabhain is like pure salted caramel, combining the sea elements of island maturation with the mouthcoating texture of a textbook Speyside malt. After 25 years in the barrel, this incredible specimen came out at 49.5% cask strength with an absolutely incredible color. Sweet sherry dances with caramelized apples and pears, lots of Oloroso rancio, and loads of oak spice on the finish. You’ll be thinking more along the lines of Macallan and Glenfarclas than Islay at the end of this one. This is a MUST for sherry heads.

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 12, 2018

Bunnahabhain has been having a banner year so far at K&L. First the distillery direct 13 year PX edition flew outta here as people went nuts for all that sweet sherry. Then we featured the 12 year old single cask expression from OP at a ridiculous bargain price. Now we’ve got this 25 year old single sherry hogshead edition to bring folks back on the sherry train. This baby is DARK, as in saturated with sweet sherry goodness. It’s also a PERFECT 49.5% ABV, so it’s sippable and ready to go right out of the bottle. I can’t say enough good things about this one. It’s a sherry head’s dream come true, lots of sweet textures and plenty of salty Islay character to add nuance. This will go very fast.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 18, 2018

Wow I mean just what the hell? We’ve had a string of wonderful Bunnahs over the last year, the result I believe of the distillery’s change in ownership. When the new owners took a look at all the old whisky in the warehouse that they didn’t own, I bet they sent a few thousand letters on fancy legal paper. Rent is going up! Anyway, we’re the great beneficiaries of that business acumen. Other independents have taken the good name and the old age and jacked the prices up, but we’ve got some good old friends in bonny Scotland who treat us well. The dark color forces a double take when it hits the glass. Refill? Dang! It must have been a fresh dump if you catch my drift, but it’s balanced and absolutely filled to the brim with life. The nose is nuts and orange liqueur by the sea. Dark fruit salted. Tobacco leaf and cedar pointed by subtle salted and stewed red fruit quality. Touches of dried kelp, freshly polished leather and no obvious peat. The sweetness of the nose is balanced by the rich savory entry on the palate. It’s a big one! Nice and dry with a big oak spice pulling through in the back. Truly a special cask, one of the best values we’ll ever offer.

The color on this is unbelievable. Think deep mahogany, almost difficult to see through. The sherry influence is immediately evident on the nose with rich fruity notes of caramelized apples and pears. On the palate, it is rich and mouth-coating, with syrupy fruity sweetness and a nice long, malty finish. What a punch of flavor! It’s incredibly smooth and silky without the heat one expects from 49.5% alcohol.

This spectacular quarter century old malt has the gentlemanly roundness that I always want but rarely encounter in long aged whisky. It is not only velvety and full in the mouth, it also has great nutty complexity from the Sherry wood treatment. I find this to be a value at the price. I am sure if it was being offered by the distillery instead of direct and exclusive from Old Particular, it would be more than twice the price!

When you pull the bottle out of the gift box the first thing you’ll realize is you’re dealing with a sherry aged beauty. It’s striking how dark it is; especially when you hold it next to our 12 year old Bunnahabhain cask. The nose is loaded with rancio, fudge, orange and cocoa. The palate is rich and weighty. The gentle smoke sails in the background. The salinity rides up front. If you already know and love Bunnahabhain, don’t miss this guy. If you’re just wanting to explore Islay but aren’t sure about full blown campfire smoke: start here.
