New Arrivals & Back in Stock at K&L California – Whisky News

TOP PICKS…
(a handful of our favorites also listed in the New Arrivals and Back in Stock sections)

1994 Laphroaig 18 Year Old K&L Exclusive Chieftain’s Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($139.99)
One of the great visits from our 2012 visit to Scotland was Laphroaig distillery, where we learned many new stories concerning its fascinating history. The whisky’s special combination of sea, smoke, and brine has had a magical effect on people over the years. In 1908, manager Ian Hunter decided to make Laphroaig one of the first distilleries to market itself as a single malt, rather than sell it off for blends. What an idea! Shortly after that, a failed attempt to purchase Laphroaig (as well as a childish attempt to block their water supply with large rocks) led Peter Mackie to build the now-defunct Malt Mill with Laphroaig’s exact specifcations, hoping to recreate that unique flavor (he couldn’t). Laphroaig was one of the first distilleries to have a female manager (Bessie Williamson) and they’re one of the few today that still malts their own barley. Despite their repuation for forward-thinking, they continue to operate very traditionally, making only one type of spirit and filling into only one kind of barrel – first-fill Bourbon casks. While Laphroaig does not sell casks directly, we were able to broker one via Chieftain’s exclusively for K&L. This 18 year beauty has everything we love about mature Laphroaig – medicinal notes, brine, and campfire smoke in a more subdued state, mixing brilliantly with soft vanilla and wood spice. It’s classic in every way and at full proof – no water added. A fantastic whisky from an iconic distillery’s older stock. (David Driscoll).

Glann ar Mor Distillery appoints importer for Sweden

September 2012

Glann ar Mor, the artisan distillery from Brittany is delighted to announce it has appointed Symposion International AB for the distribution of its whiskies in Sweden.

Glann ar Mor’s owner, Jean Donnay said : “We regard Sweden as a priority market with a high potential for our whiskies and are very happy to work with Symposion International AB who offer just the right profile for our distillery : a team of passionate and dedicated people specialized in the marketing of premium spirits”.

Symposion based in Malmö represents in Sweden some famous producers such as Gordon & MacPhail, Springbank and Nikka Whisky.

Glann ar Mor is a craft distillery producing its whiskies by the seaside on the Northern coast of Brittany in pure Celtic tradition, doing it the old fashion way with live flame heating for its two pot stills, worm tub condensers, wooden washback and ultra slow distillation.

The un-peated Glann ar Mor and the peated Kornog will be introduced in Sweden by Symposion at the Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival held on 27-29 September & 4-6 October. Both single malts are already well established in the whisky community, having benefited from multiple awards and tasting reviews, including in particular a “Liquid Gold Award” for Kornog in the two latest editions of Jim Murray’s “Whisky Bible”.

Longrow Red at T.B. Watson Ltd – Scotch Whisky News

Cask Type: Seven years in refill bourbon, four years in Cabernet Sauvignon hogsheads.
Cask Origin: Angoveʼs Long Row, Australia.
Colour: Red
Nose: A real treat. Sweet in the beginning; raspberry jam and hints of rose petal. As the nose develops it reveals a light peatiness, with cherries, red grapefruit and blood oranges.
Palate: Oh thereʼs the peat! Initially oaky and leathery with a little bit of tobacco and salt, the Cabernet Sauvignon influence appears later with some blackberries and cinnamon. A very chewy dram.
Finish:Long and peaty. Definitely coastal in style, there is a touch of mellow fruitiness here too.

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show Masterclasses Now On-sale and Selling Fast! – Whisky News

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show Masterclasses now on-sale and selling fast!

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show is known for its once-in-a-lifetime masterclasses that are presented throughout the Show and 2012 is continuing this tradition.

Building on the success of the last three years attendees will have the opportunity to attend four incredible masterclasses over the weekend of the Show, combining rare and interesting whiskies with world-class presenters.

From Scotland to Japan with Dave Broom, Rachel Barrie and Tatsuya Minagawa Saturday October 6th, 1pm. £55

While Scotland has been producing whisky for hundreds of years, the whisky world is a broad church and there are many other countries now making a name for themselves in the industry. The one that has been turning the most heads over the last decade or two has been Japan.

In this Masterclass we will be examining the differences and similarities between the styles of Scottish and Japanese whiskies, comparing and contrasting various drams from Morrison Bowmore and Suntory.

Leading the tasting will be Dave Broom, drinks writer and expert on both Japanese and Scottish whisky. He will be joined by Morrison Bowmore’s whisky creator and master blender, Rachel Barrie, and Suntory Brand Ambassador and experienced whisky sommelier Tatsuya Minagawa.

The class will be conducted in three parts, each based around a certain concept in the whisky world. The whiskies will be:

Cask samples from Auchentoshan and Hakushu – demonstrating ‘Lightness’

A Glen Garioch cask sample and Hakushu 18 – demonstrating ‘Fruitiness’

Gold Bowmore 1964 and Yamazaki 1984 – demonstrating ‘Ageing’

Gordon & Macphail’s Greatest Hits

Saturday October 6th, 3:30pm. £55

David Urquhart is Gordon & Macphail’s joint managing director and part of the third generation of the Urquhart family to be involved in the running of the famed independent bottler. He will be retiring this year after over 40 years of service and in honour of his time at the wheel of Gordon & Macphail we thought we should have a bit of a celebration.

David and his team have had a dig through their warehouses and come up with an impressive line-up, showcasing whiskies distilled in the four decades he has been part of the G&M team as well as a couple more from when he was growing up.

On the mat will be:

* Benromach 2005

* Pittyvaich 1993

* Macallan Speymalt 1980

* Tomintoul 1972 G&M Private Collection

* Benromach 1969

* Glen Grant 1952 Diamond Jubilee

All the proceeds from this Masterclass will be donated to Prostate Cancer UK, working since 1996 to raise awareness and funding for research into combating the disease, and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity’s Prostate Targeted Therapy Group.

Rare and Unusual Islay Classics with Mario Groteklaes Sunday October 7th, 1pm. £65

For this fantastic Masterclass we will be joined by Mario Groteklaes from fabled Belgian distributor and independent whisky bottler The Nectar. Mario’s experience in whisky selection over the years has led to him bottling some fantastic drams, some of which we’ve had the privilege of stocking at TWE.

In this Masterclass we have selected a number of very exciting whiskies that are not only a little bit unusual, but also rarely seen at tastings (hence the name). We’ve been digging through the last few decades of Islay releases to create a lineup that will intrigue and delight.

We will be tasting:

* Bruichladdich 15yo (White Label)

* Ardbeg Kildalton 1980

* Lagavulin 1979 Distillers Edition

* Laphroaig 1974

* Signatory Port Ellen 10yo ‘Scottish Wildlife’

The Johnnie Walker Directors Blends with Matthew Crow Sunday October 7th, 3:30pm. £35

Each year since 2008, Diageo have commissioned Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge and his team to create a special whisky for the directors of the company. Only a few hundred bottles are produced, using some of their most impressive stocks; these bottles are given directly to the directors, and have never been available to the general public.

We are very fortunate to be joined by blender Matthew Crow who will lead us through not one but all four of these fabled bottles, exploring the fundamentals of blending, and discussing the building blocks and process of putting together the iconic whiskies in the Johnnie Walker range.

Each of the yearly blends has been focused around a certain idea which has then been realised by Jim Beveridge, Matthew Crow and the blending team:

* 2008 – Inspired by the discovery of a small parcel of forgotten casks that highlight Diageo’s stocks of rare and flavoursome spirit, as well as the importance of balancing old and young whisky in a blend.

* 2009 – An exploration into the typically smoky finish of the Johnnie Walker range, offering insights into the use of peated whiskies and focusing on bold flavours.

* 2010 – A look at the mouthwatering fruitiness that accompanies the smoke of Johnnie Walker, generously using sherry casks for rich dried fruit and balancing that with fresh fruit flavours.

* 2011 – A whisky designed around the oak casks used for maturation, combining the flavours found by using different styles of wood to produce a showcase of the versatility of Johnnie Walker.

Full details of all four masterclasses can be found on The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show website: http://www.whisky-show.com

Tickets for all four masterclasses are now available from TicketSource:

Stranahan’s® Colorado Whiskey Fired Up to Sponsor Man of the Cliff 2012 – Whiskey Distillery Brings Its Colorado Spirit to Red Cliff – American Whiskey News

Stranahan’s® Colorado Whiskey Fired Up to Sponsor Man of the Cliff 2012 – Whiskey Distillery Brings Its Colorado Spirit to Red Cliff

DENVER, CO – Stranahan’s® Colorado Whiskey, the distinctive small-batch whiskey distilled in Colorado’s first-ever micro-distillery, is the presenting sponsor of Man of the Cliff 2012, a fundraising event that benefits charity organization First Descents. The fourth annual event is staged in Red Cliff, Colorado, on Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7, and will spill over with rugged activities modified to fit all strength and ability levels.

“We like to think that Stranahan’s embodies the outdoor spirit of Colorado – it is Colorado’s first whiskey, born in the mountains and made from barleys grown right here in the Rockies,” said Stranahan’s general manager Pete Macca. “And an event just doesn’t get any more rugged and mountainous than Man of the Cliff. It’s a perfect fit for Stranahan’s to be there, and it’s a great opportunity for us to give back to our community.”

This distinctly Colorado event donates 100% of profits to First Descents, an organization that provides outdoor adventures for young adults surviving and fighting cancer, instilling confidence by giving participants the opportunity to try something most never considered possible following their diagnosis. Man of the Cliff is one of several uniquely Colorado fundraising events that Stranahan’s supports throughout the year.

This year’s competition lights up with axe throwing, archery, keg tossing, caber tossing, sledge hammer throwing, speed chopping, two-man cross cut sawing and more, all of which have been slightly modified to suit the skill sets of the untrained weekend lumberjacks and outdoor enthusiasts. Music and refreshments – including tastes of Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey – round out the weekend. The event takes place outdoors, right next to Mango’s Mountain Grill, located at 166 Eagle Street in Red Cliff, 16 miles south of Vail.

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is available throughout Colorado at major retailers, bars and restaurants.
