BIG PEAT ANNOUNCES 2021 CHRISTMAS LIMITED EDITION AT CASK STRENGTH – Scotch Whisky News

BIG PEAT ANNOUNCES 2021 CHRISTMAS

LIMITED EDITION AT CASK STRENGTH

Douglas Laing & Co, leading distiller, blender and bottler, today unveil Big Peat Christmas, the annual special bottling within their Islay Malt Scotch Whisky brand.

Offered at natural cask strength of 52.8% alcohol and proudly without colouring or chill-filtration, this year’s festive release is said to be “packed with earthy, leathery, ashy charm, balanced by a wonderfully warming sweetness”.

The Limited Edition launch rounds off a big year for the cult Islay Malt, a year that has seen Big Peat take home a Gold Award at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Awards and the Master Medal at the Spirits Business Awards. These awards, the family say, are “testament to the quality offered by our carefully-crafted, high strength Blended Malt”.

Packaged in a lustrous icy-blue gift tube with gloss-varnished snowflakes, Big Peat’s Christmas gift tube carries bespoke illustration depicting the iconic bearded fisherman riding a sleigh on his island home of Islay. The candy-striped red and white bottle capsule that has become synonymous with the festive release completes the premium gifting Whisky.

Fred Laing, Chairman of his family’s firm, comments:

“Our family business is truly grateful and pleased to know that our Big Peat Christmas bottling has become something of an annual ritual for other Islay Whisky-loving families all over the world. It is so heartwarming to receive messages from keen consumers for whom opening that special bottle of Big Peat Christmas marks the beginning of the festivities with friends and family. At the figurative helm of our family sits Big Peat himself – and so, from our family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas indeed.”

Big Peat Christmas 2021 will be available from September from specialist Scotch Whisky retailers in key markets globally, including Europe, North America and Asia.

Last Call: In-Stock K&L Exclusives – Scotch Whisky News

Last Call: In-Stock K&L Exclusives

For those that don’t want to wait for next year’s container, there are some stunning renditions that are now in stock but will not be long for our shelves. Two brilliant buys are Linkwood’s 18 Year Old and GlenAllachie’s 19 Year Old. They deliver the complexity and age statement of many peers that sell for multiples of the price. We also adore Dailuaine’s 10 Year Old, a sherry cask that delivers the goods at just under $55.

2010 Dailuaine 10 Year Old “Sovereign” K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $54.99 View

This first Scotch container of 2021 sees a trio of exceptional 10-12-year-old sherry aged malts. Sherried Dailuaine has been a fan favorite at K&L for years and we’ve sold 16 different bottlings over the last decade. Given the long-standing relationship many of our customers have with these bottlings, we don’t foresee this being around long. A classic Diageo distillery—Dailuaine has a sizable capacity upwards of 5 million liters a year—yet is rarely seen as an official release. Stylistically it sits somewhere between Clynelish and Blair Athol and shows both a waxy character associated with the former and an inherent sherriness associated with the later. This makes it a perfect candidate to stand up to a big ol’ sherry butt in just a matter of 10 years. The price to quality ratio makes it one of the best deals of the year

2002 Linkwood 18 Year Old “Hepburn’s Choice” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $99.99 View

The splendid Linkwood Distillery is truly the unsung hero of the Diageo portfolio. While we wonder desperately why they won’t bother to sell it regularly as a single malt, we’re constantly reminded that the core blends represent the vast majority of their profits and this is such a crucial element in those products that risking their integrity by marketing a single malt version is not good business. We luckily have access to the occasional barrel from our sources in Scotland and we rarely say no to Linkwood. The distillery was founded in 1821, but didn’t start production until 1825. In 1971 a second distillery was built and operated on the same site and dubbed Linkwood “B”. The two distilleries operated concurrently until the late ’80s when one or both were mothballed, but by the early ’90s they were each running again. Both operated via steam heat together and had a capacity of close to 2.5 million gallons per year. It seems that both distilleries continue to operate in tandem, with a total of 6 stills (3 wash and 3 spirit). Expect the classic Linkwood character, full of fruit, pure maltiness and the tiniest tingle of peat. Drops of licorice, heather, honey, citrus are welcome. At full strength it’s great, but could still stand to have a drop or two of nice spring water added to open up the rich inviting aromas of this special malt. An exceptional value and safe bet for that pure Speyside character. *Originally sold incorrectly as “Old Malt Cask.” Same cask, different label*

1995 GlenAllachie 19 Year Old “Hart Brothers Finest Collection” Single American Oak Barrel Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) $109.99 View

The Hart family have been licensed victuallers and publicans in Paisley on the outskirts of Glasgow since the 18th century, but it was in 1964 that brothers Iain & Donald Hart incorporated the company as Wine & Spirit Wholesalers and Scotch Whisky Blenders. Alistair Hart, who still selects casks for this special line today, came on as Chief Blender in 1975. His charge at the time was to secure and select the finest casks of single malt that were not readily available to the market. Their commitment to excellence is second to none in the industry and they’ve built a reputation for acquiring high quality stocks and bottling exceptional single casks. The wonderful Glenallachie distillery has come into focus after its recent sale to industry veteran Billy Walker. This lovely cask was bottled in 2015 before the change in ownership without chillfilteration or coloring at a cask strength of 56.7%. This is listed as aged for 19 years in American oak, but there are obvious sherry flavors here. A gorgeous chestnut color with a nose of dark cocoa, medium roast arabica, bright stone fruit and mint. A powerful palate of spicy oak, dark red fruit and a slight nuttiness. Definitely on the drier side of sherried ‘allachie, but overtly delightful and an absolutely exceptional price point for the quality and rarity of barrels this age. Only 180 bottles available of this excellent cask.

New Release – Bunnahabhain Aonadh Limited Release – Scotch Whisky News

BUNNAHBAIN – AONADH

 10 YEAR OLD | 70cl | 56.2% ABV

Bunnahabhain Bay is surrounded by dramatic peaks and the undulating rhythms of the sea. Making this idyllic backdrop the perfect setting for crafting Whisky. The word Aonadh is Gaelic for “Union”(pronounced “oon-ouch”) which reflects the perfect marriage of both the finest port finished Bunnahabhain, and sherry matured Bunnahabhain. Each of these have then been brought together post maturation, to form this unique spirit.

On the nose there is rich creamy vanilla with notes of brandy butter, caramel, indulgent berries and a subtle hint of oak. Sweet red and black fruits come through on the palate, complimented with a cinnamon spice, roasted nuts and a slight saltiness coming through at the back. The finish is long, with a fading spice reminiscent of chilli chocolate and hints of floral candy.

Situated at the end of a small single track road, on the shores of the Sound of Islay, Bunnahabhain is known for its spectacular surroundings and delicious signature unpeated Islay Single Malt Whisky. It is also the most remote distillery on Islay.

Pronounced ‘Bunn-na-ha-venn’, meaning ‘mouth of the river’ in Scots Gaelic, the distillery stands apart with its signature unpeated style. With the tallest stills on the island and the only distillery to use water from a natural spring, Bunnahabhain is known for its sherried, delicate, complex and unpeated Single Malt.

There are two different spirits produced at Bunnahabhain: Bunnahabhain and Peated Bunnahabhain(Moine). The two spirits are produced using the same stills, washbacks and mash tuns with the same process water. Both spirits, however, are totally different in character due to the malted barley used. Spirit cut is slightly later for the peated (or Moine) as the phenolic flavours come off at the spirit end of the run.

Watch Hill Proper bourbon bar hires construction firm and creative director – American Whiskey News

Watch Hill Proper bourbon bar

hires construction firm and creative director

Membership sales approach opening day capacity

PROSPECT, Ky. (September 14, 2021) – Watch Hill Proper, Louisville’s first premier bourbon club located in Norton Commons, is proud to announce it has chosen Louisville-based Buffalo Construction, Inc. for the construction of the 5,200 sq. ft. location anticipated to open in the first quarter of 2022. The Club has also hired Louisville native and whiskey expert Forrest Price as its Creative Director.

Both the Club’s layout and renderings were created by Design + Inc., an award-winning architectural and design firm that specializes in the restaurant industry. Buffalo Construction, Inc., a commercial construction partner, will bring The Fermenter (a waiting room with a smaller bar), the main bar, and two private rooms – a Member Lounge and a Library to life. The Member Lounge will be accessible to members during the day before official opening hours of the club. The Library will be a place for members to relax and expand their bourbon knowledge. The main bar will be in a large open room with over 1,000 bottles of bourbon behind the bar. A unique bourbon barrel ceiling feature will be a focal point of the club, with barrels located throughout the club. Construction is scheduled to begin in October.

As Creative Director, some of Forrest Price’s duties will include optimizing the flow behind the bar and serving the guests, assisting with bottle acquisition, interviewing and hiring staff, curating the wine list, creating curriculum for staff education, collaborating in the cocktail program, creating and organizing events, and guiding guests through the plethora of whiskey expressions.

“Of all the ways in which people drink spirits, none seem more pervasive than grain aged in wood, aka Whiskey,” says Price. “Being Whiskey Advisor at such a unique place as Jack Rose Dining Saloon in Washington, D.C. showed me firsthand that Kings from the Middle East, professional athletes, tourists from Peru, farmers from Idaho, the neighbor down the street, families from Nashville, and politicians from all over the world share a common interest – whiskey. This special brown liquid has spread its tentacles to nearly every corner of the planet and each place has put its own unique stamp on it. This is what draws me to be a steward of the spirit, and the hospitality industry in general. The nuances of each style are brilliant and tasty, and I love sharing their discrepancies.”

Watch Hill Proper began accepting membership applications through its website for all membership types back in May. Industry leaders affiliated with high quality brands including Four Gate, Beam Suntory, Brown-Forman, Heaven Hill, Angel’s Envy, Castle & Key, Bardstown Bourbon Company, New Riff, Four Roses, Limestone Branch and Peerless have already joined the club. Many authors and influencers have also joined, and more are being added daily. “We have received tremendous support from the entire bourbon industry,” says co-founder Josh Howes, “and we can’t wait to give our members exclusive intimate experiences with these brands through our club events.”

The current membership drive underway has a limited number of 300 memberships and about half have been accepted to date. Once memberships reach the cap of 300 members, applicants will be placed on a membership waiting list. More memberships may be released at a future date, but the initial cap of 300 ensures a premier member experience. Memberships are not required to visit the club as it will be open to the public. However, members will have reservation privileges, receive a discount on drinks, have access to purchase the club barrel picks, and can attend special member-only events amongst more than a dozen additional privileges.

Watch Hill Proper plans to deliver a large and rare selection of bourbon and create a unique whiskey cocktail program. Light fare food and wine will also be served. For more information or for membership details, please visit the Watch Hill Proper website at www.watchhillproper.com or contact Bev Reese at (502) 230-1982.
