Malt Messenger by Andrew Ferguson – April 27, 2022 – The G&M Generation Glenlivet 80 Year Has Arrived & More! – Scotch Whisky News

It seems like ages ago, we announced the imminent arrival of the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 80 Year, at 80 years of age, the world’s oldest whisky. It was 6 months ago to be precise, in October of 2021. We had originally planned to launch it in late Fall 2021 or early in 2022. But as with many things, the pandemic got in the way.

In the interim, Macallan has launched an 81-year-old to claim the record for oldest whisky. The whisky, it should be noted was all but certainly sourced from Gordon & MacPhail. Even though the Glenlivet 80 Year only held the title for the oldest whisky ever bottled for just a year and a half, it is still in rare company, and will forever hold the title of the world’s first 80 year old whisky.

Richard Urquhart, Gordon & MacPhail Head of Sales (Americas), and the 4th generation of his family to own and operate the company will be joining us today to launch the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 80 Year in-store. We invite you to drop in between 4 and 6PM to meet Richard, view the bottle (possibly your only chance), and sample a couple of Gordon & MacPhail whiskies… not the 80 year though!

A little over a decade ago, Kensington Wine Market was selected by Gordon & MacPhail to launch the Generations Glenlivet 70 Year. A sister cask to the 80 Year, and also at the time of its bottling, the oldest whisky ever bottled. I thankfully kept a tiny sample of the Glenlivet 70 Year from a press kit for a special occasion, and as such, was able to sample the two whiskies side by side. The video of the tasting is on our KWM YouTube page!

As always, in the event of a discrepancy in price, the point of sale at KWM will be taken as correct. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions, comments, or requests (but online ordering works too, in fact, it might be faster…).

Wishing you all a Happy Easter & Passover from your friends at Kensington Wine Market.

Sincerely,

Andrew Ferguson

THE GORDON & MACPHAIL

GENERATIONS GLENLIVET 80 YEAR

THE WORLD’S FIRST 80 YEAR OLD WHISKY

As if they needed yet more proof of being one of the world’s most forward-looking whisky firms, Gordon & Macphail has gone and done it again, launching once again, the world’s oldest whisky… the Gordon Macphail Generations Glenlivet 80 Year is coming to Canada, exclusively in Alberta to KWM. 250 decanters have been released globally with just 4 of them slated to come to Canada.

Producer Description: “On 3rd February 1940 in a quiet corner in the north of Scotland, George Urquhart and his father, John, had the extraordinary foresight and vision to lay down spirit from Glenlivet Distillery in a bespoke Gordon & MacPhail cask to be enjoyed by future generations.

“On 5th February 2020, leaning on the unique skill and experience acquired by over more than 125 years, the decision was taken to finally bottle the cask’s precious out-turn of 250 decanters.”

The Generations Glenlivet 80 Year is bottled in a decanter and packaging, designed by internationally acclaimed architect and designer, Sir David Adjaye OBE.

Only 4 bottles are coming to Canada, 2 of them to Kensington Wine Market!

G&M Generations Glenlivet 80 Year – 44.9% – First fill Sherry Butt Cask #380 – Distilled: 3 February 1940 – Bottled: 5 February 2020 – My Tasting Note: “Nose: deep, antique-y (as you’d expect), old school sherry tones; creme caramel, creme brule and toasted coconut; soft elegant leather, damp cigar tobacco, and high cocoa content dark chocolate; Australian licorice and Christmas cake; ripe mango, papaya and grilled pineapple; candied orange peel and dried apricot; you can tell its old, but also far from over the hill. Palate: round, rich, decadent, and distinguished; still antique-y, this is a fine example of old school sherry matured whiskies, but also far from over the hill, with none of the telltale signs of over oaked spirit; juicy tropical fruits, more mango, papaya, melon, and grilled pineapple; some kiwi fruits, fig and apricot jams too; Manuka honey, treacle toffee, dark chocolate, and Christmas cake; old Armagnac, polished old leather sofas, and Cuban cigars; some faintly musty-earthy dunnage notes slide in with delicate spices. Finish: warm, coating and elegant with soft smooth sherry tones, dark chocolate, subtle spices and tropical fruits. Comment: what is most remarkable about this beautiful whisky, is how well it has aged; it is more sherried than the Generations Glenlivet 70 Year, but as with its sister cask bottling still vibrant and far from over the hill; it is an absolute treat and a real privilege to have had the opportunity to sample this whisky; well done Gordon & Macphail!” – $140,000.00 – 93pts Angus @WhiskyFun.org

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $80

·     Pick-Up Date: No pickups… it is in person!

Our Fall and Spring Single Malt Festivals pre-Covid were, to say the least, a hot ticket. Often they would sell out so quickly that we felt compelled to offer a second night. And given that Covid isn’t completely behind us yet, it doesn’t feel right cramming 100 of our whisky friends into the shop just yet. Accordingly, we are offering two more or less identical 30th Anniversary Whisky Festivals, one week apart, for a smaller crowd than usual, to give as many of our whisky friends as possible a chance to attend. As always, our neighbour Peasant Cheese will be lining your stomachs with delicious cheese, charcuterie, sausage rolls, and other treats! Both Festivals are limited to 70 participants and we are asking people to only register for one date or the other, and not both, out of respect for other customers. Thursday, May 19, 7 PM – 9 PM.

TAMNAVULIN UNVEILS WHITE WINE CASK EDITION SINGLE MALT – Scotch Whisky News

TAMNAVULIN UNVEILS WHITE WINE CASK EDITION SINGLE MALT

New release follows success of red wine editions

Speyside’s Tamnavulin Distillery has launched its latest creation, Tamnavulin White Wine Cask Edition, following on from the success and popularity of the Red Wine Cask Editions.

Tamnavulin White Wine Cask Edition showcases the distinctive orchard fruit character of the Speyside distillery, which complements the flavours enhanced by the white wine finish. In line with Tamnavulin’s tradition of double matured whiskies, this expression began its life in American White Oak barrels, before undergoing its second maturation in Sauvignon Blanc white wine casks.

The resulting whisky is rich, fresh and fruity with a soft, dry finish.   It is defined on the nose by signature orchard green apple notes which combine with banana, ripe honeydew melon and white peach together with fresh citrus, jasmine and vanilla coconut cream.  Flavours of lemon, grapefruit and baked apple tart together with a hint of cinnamon spice, ginger and lime biscuits please the palate.

The influence of the white wine cask offers a bright and fruity accompaniment to the sweet, mellow and smooth character of Tamnavulin and taps into consumers’ love of white wine.  A finish rarely seen in the retail space, this whisky has an accessible fruity profile as well as offering drinkers greater choice and diversity of flavour without breaking the bank.

The Speyside single malt brand was brought back to life in 2016 to offer a compelling single malt proposition to price conscious consumers looking for a credible, quality alternative to blends and a solution to those looking to begin exploring the malt category. Since then, it has fast developed a reputation as a premium, trusted brand which is demanding consumer and trade attention alike.

This success is testament to the quality of Tamnavulin’s single malts and demand for such whiskies at a competitive price, which is fuelling repeat purchase and encouraging blended whisky shoppers to trade up.

Tamnavulin White Wine Cask Edition is now widely available in the UK with the US and select European markets following in the coming months, at an RSP of £32.

About Tamnavulin

On the Southern edge of Speyside, in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, lies Tamnavulin Distillery.  Built in 1966, the Distillery takes its name from the Gaelic for ‘mill on the hill’, the distillery was named after the historic woollen mill which still sits next to the distillery. After closing in 1995, the distillery underwent a major refurbishment before it was re-opened in 2007. The first whisky from the newly opened distillery was launched in 2016, much to the anticipation of whisky fans.

Tucked away on the edge of the River Livet, set on the bank of the Allt’ a Choire, Tamnavulin draws water from underground springs in the Easterton hills formed by snowmelt from the surrounding mountains. This water is naturally filtered through ancient limestone rock before reaching the distillery, resulting in some of the purest spring water to be found in Scotland.

The small group of skilled, time-served craftsmen began creating Tamnavulin’s signature Speyside malt whisky over fifty years ago using the finest ingredients combined with age-old distilling expertise and sophisticated techniques.

Since its launch in 2016, Tamnavulin has driven a successful path which has seen it become the fastest growing single malt globally in 2020 (IWSR ‘000’s 8.4L cases) and the no.4 brand by volume in the UK (Nielsen Scantrack/Kantar date to 9th of October 2021).

GLENALLACHIE UK SINGLE CASKS PLUS SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE BOTTLING REVEALED – Scotch Whisky News

GLENALLACHIE UK SINGLE CASKS PLUS

SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE BOTTLING REVEALED

New batch of UK Single Casks unveiled as the Scotch whisky distillery

gears up for the hotly anticipated Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2022

The GlenAllachie Distillery today launches a trio of expressions forming batch 6 of their UK-exclusive Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, alongside a distillery-exclusive bottling for this year’s Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, which will run from 27th of April to the 2nd of May 2022.

The Aberlour-based distillery, headed up by industry veteran Billy Walker, took home Visitor Attraction of the Year 2022 at the Icons of Whisky Awards.

Renowned for releasing rare and ground-breaking expressions thanks to Walker’s unparalleled wood management prowess, each cask was selected from an inventory spanning over 50,000 casks maturing within 16 on-site warehouses.

The four new Single Cask Single Malts released include:

  • The GlenAllachie 15-year-old Cask #3292 ex-Solera Oloroso Butt (Spirit of Speyside 2022)
  • The GlenAllachie 11-year-old Cask #1036 Premier Cru Classé Barrique
  • The GlenAllachie 10-year-old Cask #5368 Tawny Port Hogshead
  • The GlenAllachie 9-year-old Cask #806890 Peated Bourbon Barrel

The GlenAllachie 15-year-old exclusively for the Spirit of Speyside Festival (59.4% ABV, UK RRSP £175) was aged in a fresh Bourbon barrel followed by a first-fill Oloroso puncheon before being re-racked into an antique Oloroso Sherry butt previously used as part of an intricate solera system for 55 long years.

Solera is a maturation process deployed by Bodegas involving fractional blending in such a way that the finished product is a combination of ages, ensuring continuation of flavour profile through each vintage produced.

This incredibly lengthy cask history enabled the wood to impart deeply intense and complex layers of flavour upon the classic GlenAllachie DNA. This sumptuous Single Cask is only available at their distillery shop.

The Premier Cru Classé barrique (59.9% ABV, UK RRSP £100) is a cask which previously matured premium first growth Bordeaux red wine before hosting the GlenAllachie spirit for 11 years. The result is a single malt bursting with Turkish delight, cinnamon stewed apples and summer berries.

The GlenAllachie 10-year-old Port Hogshead (56.5% ABV, UK RRSP £95) delivers a vibrant, fruity flavour profile and ruby blush appearance following maturation in a cask sourced from Portugal which formerly held vintage Tawny Port.

The 9-year-old Single Cask (60.1% ABV, UK RRSP £90) was filled to an ex-Bourbon barrel which was used to age peated spirit distilled at The GlenAllachie Distillery. This very rare cask type has bestowed subtle notes of burnt sugar alongside root ginger and black pepper.

All GlenAllachie Single Casks are proudly presented at their natural colour, non chill filtered and at natural cask strength for maximum flavour and mouthfeel.

Commenting on the new products, Walker remarks:

“At GlenAllachie, we are deeply passionate about sourcing unique and innovative casks, particularly from premium, niche producers. Each of these casks selected reflect this; from the French fine wine barrique to the antique Sherry butt which dates back to the middle of the 20th Century, each brings considerable character and charm to the table.

“We now look forward with great delight to welcoming whisky fans from across the world to our hidden gem for the Spirit of Speyside Festival, with these spectacular drams getting the limelight they deserve.”

Batch 6 of The GlenAllachie UK Single Casks will be available via specialist retailers across the country from the week commencing 2nd May, whilst the distillery’s on-site shop will have stock of all four Single Casks from today.

ABOUT GLENALLACHIE:

One of Scotland’s few independently owned and managed distilleries, The GlenAllachie is led by industry veteran, Billy Walker, who boasts a 50-year tenure in whisky. With an emphasis on wood policy, The GlenAllachie’s cask budget for 2022 stands at an eye-watering £2m/$2.6m. With 16 on-site warehouses holding over 50,000 casks, we have complete control of the end-to-end maturation process.

The GlenAllachie focusses on quality over quantity, which is why we chose to reduce our production capacity from 4m to 500,000 Litres of Alcohol and increase our fermentation period to 160 hours for an ester rich, fruity spirit.

We believe age and integrity matter, which is why all our whiskies carry an age statement, and are bottled at a minimum of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtered for maximum flavour experience.

Our other brands are MacNair’s Boutique House of Spirits – encompassing Lum Reek Blended Malt Scotch Whisky and White Heather Blended Scotch Whisky.

Compass Box: Everything you need to know about Experimental Grain Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Just as the name implies, Experimental Grain Whisky is a limited edition that defies classification. Featuring a smoky grain whisky that’s only a pot still away from being a single malt – it’s a thrillingly transgressive first of its kind.

Experimental Grain Whisky is Hedonism’s wild child alter ego. The most expressive component of this blend is a wonderfully weird parcel from the Loch Lomond Distillery. To support it, we have drawn on rich, mature and vanilla-laced parcels from the North British and Cameronbridge distilleries, as well as a portion of Hedonism itself (further aged in cask).

This special Loch Lomond parcel was the result of feeding a wash of peated malted barley into a Coffey still made entirely from copper. The outcome was a delightful paradox – a smoky grain whisky made from 100% malted barley. Despite it being 100% malt, because it is made in a column rather than a pot still, it must be called grain whisky.

For those who thought grain whisky was by default light and creamy, think again. The flavours in this limited edition are deliciously at odds. Lush notes of toffee apple and vanilla land as gently as you’d expect from a grain whisky, before giving way to a curious peatiness that builds unlike anything we’ve tasted before.

Experimental Grain Whisky is available to purchase now from our website along with select specialist spirits retailers worldwide. Get in touch with us here if you need any help locating your nearest stockist!

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Lochindaal Cask Strength Single Barrel – Scotch Whisky News

https://youtu.be/wfOgpZ7byPw

Lochindaal.

A name that some of us may not know. A former distillery, lost to the intensity of the many whisky downfalls over the decades. A name that is now the property of Bruichladdich and something that I can’t wait to try more and more of.

As part of a private bottling, this particular whisky offers points of frustration and utter joy. The taste and the smells are incredible, literally some of the best I’ve ever had in my life, upto this point. It, in a way, has redefined what a peated whisky can be for me and that in itself is something very special.

But it is very limited, it’s probably sold out by this point, but it is soooooo good that I can only shout about it and bring a little more attention to this style of Bruichladdich. Lochindaal, along with a style of Laddie called Rhinns, seem to only be available for private cask purchase styles. Would it be good to see more of it in regular bottles? Yeah! Would flippers ruin it? Absolutely.
