EVOLVED AND ELEVATED: THE GLENLIVET RELAUNCHES ITS 21 & 25 YEAR OLD WHISKIES

The Glenlivet, the original Speyside single malt, has reimagined its renowned 21 and 25 Year Old expressions, transporting them into new territories of flavour. The meticulously crafted whiskies, which come together to form The Sample Room Collection, have been finished in different types and combinations of casks to create two expressions. Once again, The Glenlivet pushes traditional boundaries in the world of Prestige single malt whiskies by introducing new tastes and originality, as well as a new bold and vibrant design.

At the heart of the collection is the Sample Room – The Glenlivet’s creative epicentre where the makers strive for continuous improvement and innovation. It is the place where the new 21 and 25 Year Old have been carefully redefined and refined by hand. By intricately experimenting with cask finishes and flavour, the very best balance of single malt whisky is achieved. The Sample Room Collection is a testament to the makers of the whisky, celebrating them as leaders within the single malt whisky industry.

The collection features The Glenlivet’s most intricate flavour balance yet, The Glenlivet 21 Year Old single malt. It not only possesses a distinctive range of qualities, but is full of flavour and depth, bringing an extra smooth taste to the whisky. Triple finished in first-fill Oloroso sherry, Troncais oak Cognac and Vintage Colheita port casks, whisky enthusiasts will be able to indulge in the luscious notes of caramelised pears and juicy sultanas, with hints of warming ginger. Deriving from the Cognac cask influence, the flavour is intertwined with fragrant nutmeg and cinnamon, leaving a long and rich spice finish.

New levels of complexity and richness are achieved with The Glenlivet 25 Year Old single malt, one of the makers’ finest bottles finished in PX sherry and Troncais oak Cognac casks. The expression is a true testimony to the care and craftsmanship that has gone into every drop. The taste is both rich and intense, yet silky and sweet with the double cask finish adding depth to the palate. Its enticing flavours of sweet fig and blood orange, deriving from the sherry influence, are complemented by the Cognac casks’ warming notes of ginger, toasted oak and a hint of charred pineapple, leaving a long, rich and sweet gentle spice finish.

Many a proverbial tear was shed in 2018 when the old Anchor Distilling company was purchased by Hotaling & Co. and it was announced that their most popular item, the Old Potrero Rye, would be discontinued. Little did we know then, only a few short years later they would resurrect this insanely popular whiskey to great anticipation, and we’re thrilled to say they delivered in spades. In fact, it’s an unequivocally better expression than the previous renditions ever were. Long-time Anchor/Hotaling head distiller Bruce Joseph has truly nailed this one. At a six-year age statement, it’s marvelously complex, eminently approachable, yet still its old familiar self. That’s to say, it’s still that beloved, classic west coast rye that skyrockets off the QPR charts at under $60, which might be the most jaw-dropping feature of this stellar new release. With all the hype and eager enthusiasm surrounding it, Hotaling could have easily raised the price through the roof. But as spirits buyer Andrew Whiteley observes, “It’s a miracle that this whiskey didn’t take a massive price increase with the relaunch.” As it now stands, this is arguably the best rye buy in our inventory, and certainly the most triumphant return of an old K&L favorite that we’ve seen in a very long time.

Hotaling—formerly Anchor Distilling—has finally relaunched the Old Potrero Rye Whiskey, and it is far and away the best it has ever been. In a slick new package, it now comes with a respectable 6-year age statement. It’s still 100% malted rye, a highly unusual mashbill that harkens back to the early days of American distilling and was revived by Fritz Maytag and Head Distiller Bruce Joseph when Anchor was founded in 1993. In fact, Bruce still makes the whiskey today, nearly 30 years later. Add to that the extremely high-quality barrel selection made from new, fine-grained American oak and aging in SF’s unique climate, and you’ve got a true San Francisco original with history, pedigree, and excellent flavor. Insane cinnamon is definitely the first note. It jumps out of the glass, quickly followed by vanilla, butterscotch, and a touch of savor reminiscent of green tree bark. The nose moves seamlessly into toasted coconut and brown sugar. It’s an expansive survey of a classic American oak profile. The rye itself jumps out next; it’s sweet, spicy, and a little yeasty. As you move onto the palate, the whiskey is very lively. It’s richer than expected, especially as the pour rests in the glass. You get chocolate (milk and dark) mingled with coconut and mocha. Cracked pepper and freshly harvested alfalfa come to mind—it is almost surprising how present the rye character is given how sweet the nose and palate are. With a little bit of water, an even sweeter profile emerges, particularly amping up the vanilla notes. Gloriously, it doesn’t ever lose the stiff rye backbone. The aromatics open up even further. Cinnamon adds nutmeg and allspice. Butterscotch morphs into caramel. The black pepper becomes more rounded. The finish is long, clean, and sweet with ample kick from the 48.5% ABV. It’s a miracle that this whiskey didn’t take a massive price increase with the relaunch. It’s better than ever, and rye lovers should take note—you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better rye whiskey being made anywhere.

THE GLENLIVET CHALLENGES OUTDATED WHISKY PRECONCEPTIONS BY BREAKING INTERNET ALGORITHMS

#BREAKTHESTEREOTYPE AIMS TO CHANGE THE FACE OF WHISKY

The Glenlivet is on a mission to change the outdated stereotype of the whisky drinker – one image at a time. #BreakTheStereotype celebrates diversity and representation within whisky – the first in a series of preconceptions the original Speyside single malt is challenging head on.

For far too long, the thought of whisky being enjoyed exclusively by middle-aged, white men has dominated pop culture. A perception so widespread, you only need to look at the results for ‘whisky drinker’ on Google Images™ search service – a disproportionate number of white men over any other gender or ethnicity. However, research conducted by Pernod Ricard* shows that the modern whisky drinker has evolved, with a third of whisky drinkers globally being women.

To challenge this ‘cultural norm’, The Glenlivet is infiltrating search engine algorithms and purposefully planting images to change the visual landscape. Now, when searching ‘whisky drinker’ using Google Images™ search service, you are greeted with a colourful montage as unique and diverse as real whisky drinkers in 2022.

The photos were captured by two photographers who embody originality and the eclectic world of whisky. Danny Kasirye is a Ugandan-British photographer and director who forged his own path. His photography always aims to bring a sense of purity, joy and beauty in its many forms. Devyn Galindo is a queer Chicanx artist, photographer and Whisky Sour fan based in California, whose work exists at the intersection of culture, representation, and politics. An individual who champions self-expression, their personal project, ‘The Van Dykes Projects’ documents queer stories across the US and aims to preserve queer oral history for future generations, practicing activism through art.

To continue to promote diversity in whisky, The Glenlivet has partnered with Equal Measures, an organisation founded to deliver greater equity for ethnic minorities and marginalised groups in hospitality. As part of the partnership The Glenlivet is supporting Equal Measures through its Education and Mentorship Scheme by providing up to 30 participants from marginalised communities with access to qualifications, one-on-one mentorship and opportunities that will enable them to challenge the biases they encounter with a wealth of experience, knowledge, and connections.

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Distillers’ Association announced today that its annual Kentucky Bourbon Affair™ fantasy camp won’t happen in September 2022, but the prestigious event is being reimagined for 2023.

The KDA created the KBA eight years ago as a world-class celebration featuring daily behind-the-scenes access at the nation’s most iconic distilleries, with elite nightcap dinners and fetes in Louisville starring Kentucky’s historic Bourbon culture and top-shelf culinary scene.

KDA President Eric Gregory said participating distillers simply don’t have the bandwidth and workforce to manage the immersive, week-long showcase – and many are already booked for months as visitors have returned in droves to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour.

“These intimate, rare, backstage experiences are what make the Kentucky Bourbon Affair such a magical event, and we’re concerned that it would not live up to the high expectations from our devoted fans, many of whom come back year after year,” Gregory said.

With 50 members now across 40 Kentucky counties, Gregory said the KDA is taking the time to reimagine the Kentucky Bourbon Affair™ with plans to return in 2023. It has been postponed since 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.

“The Bourbon Affair is a bucket list adventure and the only event that’s exclusively produced by the distilleries themselves,” he said. “We look forward to a fresh, new approach to the KBA next year and thank all our fans for their patience and understanding.”

Our friends at Old Particular have come through with a barn-burner of an Exclusive Cask. From one of Scotland’s most famous blue-chip names, this 2005 Glenrothes single cask is a rarity to be coveted by any serious Scotch aficionado. Due to the distillery’s business model and brand philosophy, it’s quite an unusual occurrence to find a Glenrothes cask on the independent market, but it’s simply unheard-of these days to find one with this kind of age and in a top-quality, first-fill sherry butt, no less. Needless to say, the spirits team is thrilled to the core with the finished product. For fans of the distillery, this stupendous dram has everything you’re looking for. Buyer David Othenin-Girard declares, “This is really the quintessential profile from this distillery, its rich earthy character tempered by a top-quality, nicely active sherry butt, without being totally overpowered and losing its uniqueness.” Apart from being authentically Glenrothes, it’s just an eminently pleasurable whisky by its mind-boggling complexity (especially with a few drops) and its rich, decadent profile. David’s colleague Andrew Whiteley notes, “This is the kind of fun, middle-aged malt that really knocks your socks off and reminds you just how purely enjoyable Scotch is.” You’ll want to beat a quick path to securing your bottles, as we don’t expect to see the likes of this again any time soon.

2005 Glenrothes 16 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($119.99)

K&L Notes: The Glenrothes distillery has become one of Scotland’s most prominent and recognizable over the years. They were once famous for relying exclusively on vintage releases. Situated on the Burn of Rothes in the town of the same name, it was founded in 1879. The distillery is just a quick jaunt from the famous Glen Grant and less famous Speyburn distilleries, as well as the notable still manufacturer Forsythe. The distillery had long been a part of the Edrington Group and its predecessors, but in 2010 it was sold to famous wine merchant Berry Bros. & Rudd in exchange for their famous, old, blended scotch brand, Cutty Sark. After seven short years, Berry Bros. sold the brand back to the Edrington. Over the next year or two, the brand was retooled to move away from the vintage offerings and toward a traditional core range. Usually when we see stocks outside of the distillery releases, they’re offered as part of what would obviously be considered blending stocks, that is to say refill hogsheads rather than sherry butts. We’re very lucky to have gotten access to this rare expression, made even rarer by the change in the distillery’s own line-up. The style is distinctly Glenrothes, not diverting significantly in character from the distillery’s other offerings. Expect the classic flavors of earthy malt and dark sherry character that surely won’t disappoint any lover of this special little Speyside charmer.

If you’re a Scotch fan, then you’ve almost certainly come across a Glenrothes in your journey. The Speyside blue chip was renowned for its exclusive devotion to single-vintage releases but has recently moved toward more standard age statements. It’s extremely rare to see Glenrothes being offered by independent bottlers, and when we do see it, it’s often outrageously priced and filled into old, boring casks. In any case, we’ve not bottled one in more than seven years and never in such high-quality sherry. What so intrigued me about this cask, besides the obvious quality, was how much it truly tasted like “Glenrothes”! This is really the quintessential profile from this distillery, its rich, earthy character tempered by a top-quality, nicely active sherry butt, without being totally overpowered and losing its uniqueness. The color is deep copper/burnished (1.0-1.1). The nose is a pungent mixture of creamy vanilla and dark, earthy malt. The dark, woodsy sherry frames with a charred orange peel, roasted sugar character, and with some air the bold, savory spice comes forward. Dark Espresso Romano served with lemon rind, chocolate malt, butterscotch, candied nuts, and sweet sugar syrup build on the palate. The texture is very rich. With the tiniest drop of water the nose loses its earthy edge, offering sweeter confectionery notes and the nutty oloroso character. On the palate, the fruity citrus and dried raisin character now plays perfectly with chocolate Raisinets! A hint of mossy old dunnage funk reminds us that this is indeed Glenrothes, before a long, gorgeous finish filled with honeyed sweetness and building spice. An absolutely stellar cask with tons of distillery character that continues to open for hours after your first pour. Highly recommend some water here, unless you really love the earthy side of things. If the distillery was selling whisky like this, it would be the hottest damn distillery in Scotland, but finding a single sherry butt (or even a cask-strength version of any kind) is next to impossible. It’s a terrible shame, but it’s also the beauty of the single cask market—sometimes a single piece can be greater than the whole.

Hedonistic is the first word that pops into my head when I nose this whisky. It’s rich and succulent right off the bat. Toasted crème brûlée, sweet dates, sultry spices, orange marmalade, sandalwood, peach and nectarine, citrus zest. Moving onto the palate, a more dessert forward profile emerges. Baking spices, cocoa dust, orange peel, candied nuts, a touch of savory herbs, and just a bit of heat. At 57.2% ABV, it is not overwhelming but very pleasantly punchy. A drop or two of water and more candied citrus comes forth. The wood tannin takes a bit of a back seat, but vanilla steps forward. The finish feels very classic. It’s malty, fruity, a bit sweet and herbaceous like wild mountain honey and sweet tea. This is the kind of fun, middle-aged malt that really knocks your socks off and reminds you just how purely enjoyable Scotch is.

Caramelized brown sugar and baked cinnamon for days on the nose! What a treat! There’s a present scent of chocolate shavings, a touch of maple also. A lot of things to explore here! Palate is wonderfully biting. Maple persists on the front and the finish, some stone fruit also—ripe white peaches. Barrel influence is not too overpowering considering its first fill profile. Gorgeous color too. This is an easy dram to get lost in!

A sherry-aged single malt lover’s delight. This Glenrothes has a nice, deep color. In the mouth, it is rich and full-bodied with a nice mouthfeel. The finish is mouth-coating with wonderful nutty and dried fruit flavors. With a little water, it is the same as above but slightly softer. I think that one can enjoy this single malt with or without water.
