Auction Record Set for Pappy Van Winkle at Sotheby’s – American Whiskey News

AUCTION RECORD SET FOR PAPPY VAN WINKLE

AT SOTHEBY’S IN NEW YORK

Bottle of 23 Year Old Family Reserve Sells for $52,500,

More than 17x Low Estimate

NEW YORK, 13 December 2022 – This weekend at Sotheby’s in New York, a new auction record was set for Pappy Van Winkle when a bottle of 23 Year Old Family Reserve sold for $52,500 – more than seventeen times the pre-sale estimate (est. $3,000-4,000). Two collectors battled against each other to win the coveted bottle of their dreams, pushing the final sale price ever higher. Released in 2008, the whiskey was presented for sale with its original black velvet bag.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Head of Whisky & Spirits, North America and EMEA, said: “It was exciting to be on the rostrum conducting the sale for this record-breaking bottle, which went far beyond anyone’s expectations. The auction marked a remarkable end to a year that has seen prices soar for American whiskey at Sotheby’s.”

All 14 of the individual bottles of Pappy Van Winkle on offer sold for sums in excess of their high estimates, achieving a combined total of $396,250 (est. $31,000-44,000). Individual records were also set for the Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year Old ($9,375) and 20 Year Old ($27,500).

The lots formed part of Whisky & Whiskey | Seasonal Spirits and The Yamazaki 55, which brought a total of $1,786,625, surpassing pre-sale expectations (est. $885,050 – 1,302,050). This year has seen sales of whisky at Sotheby’s in New York double, from $5.4 million in 2021 to $11.9 million in 2022.

Few names are more significant in the world of American whiskey than that of Julian ‘Pappy’ Van Winkle. Synonymous with enthusiasts, whiskeys bottled under the Van Winkle brand have gone on to become amongst the most highly rated and sought-after, gathering an almost cult-like following. Many of those were distilled at the old Stitzel-Weller Distillery, opened on Derby Day in 1935, which went on to create some of the finest and most sought-after bourbons ever produced before its closure in the early 1990s, with production moving to the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort.

The Old Rip Van Winkle brand was originally created before Prohibition, but it was not until 1972 that it was reintroduced following the repeal. The brand encompasses many of the most highly rated, collectible bourbon and rye whiskeys ever bottled.

Nose:  vanilla, toffee apple and honey-covered brioche with marmalade before cinnamon, banana bread and ginger cake, with wisps of smoke and liquorice.

Palate: treacle and molasses running over sweet sultanas, followed by glazed pineapple, mango cake and mulled wine.

Finish: Pontefract cakes, praline chocolates and Oolong tea complete the enigmatic blend.

Shackleton Blended Malt Scotch Description

Crafted from over 20 of the finest highland single malts, this blended malt is based on Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt, a whisky discovered under the ice of the Antarctic, left behind from Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1907 expedition to the South Pole.

Eleven bottles of Mackinlay’s were discovered in 2007, ten of which were in perfect condition. Whyte & Mackay’s Master Blender, Richard Paterson, then spent weeks in the laboratory nosing, tasting and deconstructing the components in order to recreate the lost malt. Using this recreation as a foundation, Paterson then built upon the blend to create a new Scotch with a real warmth and depth of character, much like Shackleton himself.

George Remus “K&L Exclusive” Barrel #222 Single Barrel Barrel Proof ~ Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey News

“Cask-strength Remus is a treat … this superb bourbon is the result of impeccably honed technical capabilities from one of the largest and oldest distilleries in the country.”
— K&L Spirits Buyer Andrew Whiteley on the Remus Cask #222

George Remus “K&L Exclusive” Barrel #222 Single Barrel Barrel Proof Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($59.99)

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: October 05, 2022

Cask-strength Remus is a treat, but it can vary enormously from barrel to barrel, in part because it doesn’t have a consistent mashbill for the single-barrel program. This unusual cask features 51% corn and 49% rye—10% of which is malted. Made at MGP (now known as Ross & Squibb when selling their own distillate under the Remus and Rossville Union brands), this superb bourbon is the result of impeccably honed technical capabilities from one of the largest and oldest distilleries in the country. Arguably, no distillery has done more for the bourbon boom of the last two decades than MGP. Let’s taste. Liquid amber in color. The nose is a combination of sweet butterscotch and freshly cracked pepper. Sweetgrass, with its signature vanilla and herbal scented leaves, is prominent. A dusting of cocoa powder and baked apples is also present in the bright and lively aroma. The palate has tremendous kick to it. At 57.1% ABV, it’s not really a surprise, but damn is it spicy at first. It reminds me a little bit of some extra spicy Russell’s rye barrels. As you continue to taste, that spice first moves from herbal tones into more savory sawdust and then finally into the sweeter barrel components—vanilla, more butterscotch, caramel, and the like. The finish is medium length when it comes to flavor, but the texture of the whisky sticks around for a long time, leaving your mouth primed for whatever comes next. With the addition of a splash or two of water, the spice profile really takes a back seat, and much more fruit comes out. A little red fruit, mixed in with a lot more sweet, baked apples and brioche, comes forward on the nose. The softened palate feels gentle and welcoming compared to the up-front intensity at full proof. It’s an enticing pour for cocktail applications, because it sweetens up so much with just a little dilution but doesn’t entirely lose that beautiful rye backbone. The creative bartender will find that this can pop in many different ways based on how you use it.

Pernod Ricard Doubles Down on the Sustainable Future of American Whiskey with Kentucky Investment – Kentucky Whiskey News

Pernod Ricard Doubles Down on the Sustainable Future of American Whiskey with Kentucky Investment

This investment follows recent announcements of €400 million behind extended and more sustainable facilities in Ireland and Scotland.

Pernod Ricard today announces a significant move to further leverage the strong growth of its premium American whiskey portfolio, The American Whiskey Collective with a €238 million ($250 million) investment over five years to build a state-of-the-art, carbon neutral distillery and aging warehouses in Marion County, Kentucky, for its fast-growing Jefferson’s Bourbon brand. The investment will also include the build of a world class visitor center facility that will welcome whiskey aficionados on the historic South Trail of Kentucky Bourbon.

Pernod Ricard has announced the intention for this new distillery to be carbon neutral once operational. The facility is also expected to be the first distillery of its size in the U.S. to achieve LEED certification, an internationally recognized sustainability framework for healthy, efficient, carbon and cost-saving environmentally friendly buildings. The distillery and warehouses will include such low carbon technologies as electrode boilers powered by certified renewable electricity, enabling the distillery to not use fossil fuels during bourbon production.

In addition, as part of Pernod Ricard’s commitment to protect and nurture the terroir surrounding its facilities, Jefferson’s will continue to partner with local farmers and suppliers to source ingredients and casks.

“American whiskey is an extremely vibrant spirits category, and our strategic investments over the last few years have proven successful” said Alexandre Ricard, Chairman and CEO, Pernod Ricard. “Our philosophy of partnering with entrepreneurial brand founders, while preserving the heritage and terroir associated with the brands they created, has made us an established player in premium American Whiskey. Jefferson’s founder Trey Zoeller is no exception.  This new investment will allow us to grow our share of category sales not only in the U.S., but also in export markets” Ricard said.
Ann Mukherjee, Chairman and CEO, Pernod Ricard North America, said “The new distillery will enable Jefferson’s to efficiently keep up with very strong consumer demand while staying true to the company’s longstanding commitment to sustainability.

“Our company is an agricultural company at its core and so it is vital that we lead the category forward – in partnership with our farmers and growers – and remain committed to the long-term sustainability of our people, our industry and our planet. This investment is the latest illustration of that belief,” said Mukherjee.

As part of the Group’s strategy to invest in evermore sustainable growth, Pernod Ricard’s Irish Distillers and Chivas Brothers brand companies recently announced plans to invest €300 million in Ireland and €100 million in Scotland to equip these brands with more sustainable distillation technologies and greater production capacity to meet growing demands. The Group is on track to meet the ambitious targets set out in its 2030 global sustainability & responsibility roadmap, ‘Good Times from a Good Place,’ which align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Founded in 1997 by Trey Zoeller and his father Chet, Jefferson’s joined the Pernod Ricard portfolio in 2019 when the company acquired the brand’s parent, Castle Brands.  Since the acquisition, Jefferson’s U.S. sales have doubled.

“For the last 25 years we have been sourcing, contract distilling and — through Kentucky Artisan Distillery — distilling ourselves,” said Trey Zoeller who continues to guide Jefferson’s in his role as Founder and Chief Strategist. “It is now time for us to take more control of our destiny. The carbon neutral, state-of-the-art distillery we are building would not be possible without Pernod Ricard’s forward thinking, integrity, and commitment to Jefferson’s and the Bourbon category’s future.”

Pernod Ricard is the No.2 worldwide producer of wines and spirits with consolidated sales amounting to €10,701 million in fiscal year FY22. The Group, which owns 17 of the Top 100 Spirits Brands, holds one of the most prestigious and comprehensive portfolios in the industry with over 240 premium brands distributed across more than 160 markets. Pernod Ricard’s portfolio includes Absolut Vodka, Ricard pastis, Ballantine’s, Chivas Regal, Royal Salute, and The Glenlivet Scotch whiskies, Jameson Irish whiskey, Martell cognac, Havana Club rum, Beefeater gin, Malibu liqueur or Mumm and Perrier-Jouët champagnes. The Group’s mission is to unlock the magic of human connections by bringing “Good Times from a Good Place”, in line with its Sustainability and Responsibility roadmap. Pernod Ricard’s decentralised organisation empowers its 19,480 employees to be on-the-ground ambassadors of its purposeful and inclusive culture of conviviality, bringing people together in meaningful, sustainable and responsible ways to create value over the long term. Executing its strategic plan, Transform & Accelerate, Pernod Ricard now relies on its “Conviviality Platform”, a new growth model based on data and artificial intelligence to meet the ever-changing demand of consumers. Pernod Ricard is listed on Euronext (Ticker: RI; ISIN Code:FR0000120693) and is part of the CAC 40 and Eurostoxx 50 indices.<
