K&L Exclusive: 12-Year-Old Macduff Single-Malt in Refill Hogshead – Scotch Whisky News

A Hidden-Gem, 12-Year-Old Speysider for a Steal

2009 Macduff 12 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside
Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($54.99)

“…it’s an intriguing example of this under-the-radar distillery, and I love recommending it to open-minded, adventurous drinkers.” — David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

One of the best features of our K&L Exclusive Cask program is the remarkable selection of affordable, aged Scotch whiskies that our buyers source on a regular basis, often from top-notch distilleries that remain known mostly to industry insiders and avid connoisseurs. Speyside’s Macduff falls under the Dewars/Bacardi umbrella, so it’s a rare sight under its own name in the independent market, but whenever we find a cask, it’s always one of a kind. This truly distinctive hogshead offers an outside-the-box experience for any Scotch fan, with a chameleon-like profile that changes dramatically from nose to palate, with or without water. It’s a lovely dram for those who like to challenge their own preconceptions, but it’s also more than reasonably priced and approachable enough to serve as a thrilling wild card in your regular bar rotation.

2009 Macduff 12 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($54.99)

K&L Notes: Macduff sits well under the radar in the single-malt world. The official bottling from the distillery goes by the name of Deveron—the river on which the distillery sits. The only Macduff the world sees comes from the indendent bottlers, and with the current ownership falling to Dewar’s under the Bacardi umbrella, it is a wonder we see any at all. Fortunately, this 12-year-old hogshead snuck away from corporate ownership and wound up in our hands. Bottled at 57.9% ABV without chill-filtration or coloring, it’s a beautiful malt highlighting sweet vanilla and rich fudge notes all with a bit of fruitiness to round it out.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: November 29, 2022

This weird and wonderful cask of Macduff is definitely the odd-ball of this year’s selections. We always have to have one. It will certainly be controversial, eliciting strong responses on both sides of the fence, but it’s an intriguing example of this distillery, and I recommending it to open-minded, adventurous drinkers. The color is pale straw. The nose is an interesting mix of porridge and vanilla bean. Soft, not-so-sweet baked pastries and a subtle industrial plastic character on the nose, which is rather quiet at cask strength. There isn’t much fruit to speak of but an odd crystal malt character. This is contrasted wonderfully by the rich, malty and fruity character on the palate. Creamy and honeyed, with candied citrus and sweet malt syrup. The nose and palate are so distinctly different, and it finishes with a big ginger note and a lovely, rich spice. With water we start to open the nose toward the greengage and yellow plums. Now we’re talking! Tons of yellow fruit now and all the odd-ball aromas are gone. All that potential on the palate opens with air and water. Please do not judge this whisky by the first pour. It needs some time and should have water added, but once you see it you’ll be hard-pressed to look away. There always has to be an odd-ball during whisky season, and so here it is. But giving the odd-ball a fair chance is often one of the most rewarding things you can do.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: November 16, 2022

I always hope Macduff will be in the offering every year when we go to Scotland. It rarely is, but I seem to like nearly all the casks I taste. It’s a friendly malt and has one of the most unusual lyne arms you’ll see in all of Scotland. They twist around like an M.C. Escher woodcut. Maybe it’s the circuitous nature of the lyne that gives the malt such a distinct note. It’s a combination of chocolate lava cake, crème brulée, and gummy citrus candy that is quite irresistible. They’re all on display here, and the barrel itself seems to be a relatively non-descript, refill hoggie. The weight and mouthfeel is a perfect medium—just throwing strikes. The fruit leans towards the citrus side of the spectrum but offers a touch of ripe melon as well. Mostly the flavors keep coming back to chocolate and vanilla with a rich creamy, fudgey, pudding-esque sort of feel to them. It’s an easy drinker if there ever was one.

As Master Distiller, Owen Martin will lead production, oversee innovation and continue producing ANGEL’S ENVY’s portfolio of finished whiskeys

Martin is ANGEL’S ENVY’s first appointed Master Distiller since co-founder and Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson’s passing in 2013

LOUISVILLE, KY (September 12, 2022) – ANGEL’S ENVY®, the Louisville-based distiller that produces finished whiskeys, today announced that Owen Martin will be joining the company as Master Distiller. Beginning on October 17, Martin will lead all aspects of production and oversee innovation for ANGEL’S ENVY, including its annual Cask Strength program and limited release Cellar Collection and Founder’s Collection programs. Martin is the first appointed Master Distiller of ANGEL’S ENVY since co-founder and Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson’s passing in 2013.

Angel’s Envy has always strived to revere tradition while embracing progress, so when looking for our new Master Distiller, we knew we needed to find someone who fully embodied that philosophy and innovative spirit.

Owen’s experience in product development and experimentation and his progressive outlook regarding what’s next for the industry, as well as the leadership he has demonstrated throughout his career in defining and championing American whiskey categories, make him a perfect fit to lead Angel’s Envy into our exciting future.”

Angel’s Envy has been a trailblazer in redefining the finished whiskey category in the US, and the chance to be a part of the next chapter for a young brand that has already made such a large impact on the industry is truly the opportunity of a lifetime. I look forward to bringing my knowledge of secondary cask finishing and unique perspective of European and American production techniques, as well as my expertise in product development and passion for experimentation, to the foremost secondary-finished bourbon and rye producer in the country.”

Owen Martin, Master Distiller of ANGEL’S ENVY

Martin will be joining ANGEL’S ENVY from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey. While at Stranahan’s, Martin quickly rose through the ranks during his six-year tenure; he was most recently serving as Head Distiller. His love of finished whiskeys was born while studying at the prestigious Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, and throughout his career, he has continued to gain a unique knowledge of whiskey maturation techniques from across the country and globe.

LUCKY FOR SOME! AUCTION STARTS FRIDAY 13TH AT 6PM.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN

This brace of whiskies from silent distilleries were relatively easy to source when they were first bottled but harder to source these days. Both the Brora and Port Ellen were distilled in 1982, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for their Connoisseurs Choice range; whisky from both of these much revered distilleries are now at a premium due to their scarcity and demand from collectors and connoisseurs alike.

One of only 319 bottles , this stunning Glen Albyn 32 year old is a fantastic example of this now closed Highland distillery. Possibly its age makes the spirit one of the oldest examples of this Inverness distillery. Distilled in 1969 and bottled thirty two years later by Douglas Laing, this desirable release would surely enhance any drinks cabinet, or take centre stage in any whisky collection.

This wonderful trio of collectable whiskies from silent distilleries are featured in our upcoming auction, starting on Friday the 13th of January at 6pm, ending on Sunday 22nd January from 8pm.

Register now at www.clickwhiskyauctions.com to bid on these fantastic drams and many more besides.

Jack Daniel’s Announces Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt Whiskey Finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks – American Single Malt News

Jack Daniel’s Announces Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt Whiskey Finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks

Limited edition 2022 Special Release features new 100% malted barley grain bill from the Jack Daniel Distillery – the first whiskey of its kind from Lynchburg

Lynchburg, Tennessee – For the first time in its storied history, the Jack Daniel Distillery is introducing a 100% malted barley grain bill with the new Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt Finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks. The 2022 limited edition Special Release features American Single Malt Whiskey twice barreled and bottled straight from sherry casks at 105.7 – 107.8 proof.

Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt begins with 100% malted barley that is ground, fermented and distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee. The whiskey passes through Jack Daniel’s traditional charcoal mellowing process and is then matured in new, charred American white oak barrels for at least four years. It is then finished for an additional two years in the finest quality Spanish Oloroso sherry casks from the Antonio Paez Lobato Cooperage before bottling at cask proof.

“Our Special Release series highlights our ongoing innovations and exceptional whiskeys from the Jack Daniel Distillery, and I’m excited to share this expression as our team set out to craft an American Single Malt that’s uniquely Jack Daniel’s,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “The combination of maturing in oak barrels and finishing in sherry casks produces incredible complexity and provides a full-bodied and sophisticated whiskey experience. We’ve never crafted a whiskey like this in Lynchburg and can’t wait to share it with our friends.”

The Special Release American Single Malt Whiskey has an aroma of soft oak, fruit and cocoa. Flavors of caramel and vanilla are complemented by notes of chocolate-covered nuts and berries, with a subtle sherry finish.

Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt will be available nationwide in limited quantities beginning in October at $70 for a 700 ml size.
