Kentucky Distillers’ Association Welcomes Fresh Bourbon Distillery as Newest Craft Member – Kentucky Whiskey News

KENTUCKY DISTILLERS’ ASSOCIATION WELCOMES

FRESH BOURBON DISTILLERY AS NEWEST CRAFT MEMBER

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Distillers’ Association today announced that Fresh Bourbon Distillery in downtown Lexington is the newest member of the non-profit trade group that unites and leads Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry.

Founded by Sean and Tia Edwards in 2017, Fresh launched its first Bourbon in 2020 in partnership with Hartfield & Co. Distillery in Bourbon County. Fresh opened a boutique distillery, tasting room and cocktail experience at 377 East Main Street in Lexington earlier this year.

“We’re thrilled and honored to be accepted to join the prestigious collection of distilleries in the KDA,” Sean Edwards said. “Since we started our journey to produce a new Bourbon brand, we’ve been amazed and humbled by the support of people all across the industry who have helped us through numerous challenges.”

Tia Edwards said, “Becoming a KDA member is a milestone achievement and marks the beginning of the next chapter for us. We’re delighted to be participants in this community, and we look forward to an expanded role in giving back and helping support the Kentucky Bourbon industry as a whole.”

A Class B distiller, Fresh Bourbon is a Craft-level member at KDA, aging less than 10,000 barrels a year, and joins an impressive list of distilleries in Fayette County, including Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co., Bluegrass Distillers, James E. Pepper Distillery, RD1 Distillery and Barrel House Distilling Co.

“Sean and Tia have poured their hearts into developing a contemporary concept built on Kentucky’s rich Bourbon heritage,” Gregory said. “We are inspired by their passion, vision and commitment, and proudly welcome them to the KDA and our family of Kentucky’s finest distillers.”

Fresh Bourbon uses a unique four-grain recipe in its flagship brand incorporating honey malt, a rarely used grain in distilling which produces a distinctive sweet and floral character. Sean Edwards said he anticipates releasing single barrel expressions and new products over the next several years.

Fresh also is now eligible to apply to join the KDA’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour®, which the association created in 2012 as the nation’s first and only tourism attraction to showcase the flourishing artisan distilling movement.

Founded in 1880, the KDA is the voice for Bourbon and spirits issues. Its diverse membership produces the overwhelming majority of the world’s Bourbon, from legendary, global brands to emerging micro distilleries that are building the next generation of the timeless craft.

Bourbon is one of Kentucky’s most treasured industries, a booming $9 billion economic and tourism engine that sustains more than 22,500 jobs with an annual payroll topping $1.23 billion each year, and pays over $285 million in local and state taxes and $1.8 billion in federal alcohol taxes, more than any other state.

A key export, distilling has the state’s highest job spin-off factor among top manufacturers; buys at least 17 million bushels of corn and other grains every year, mostly from Kentucky farm families; and is currently investing more than $5.2 billion in new stills, warehouses, bottling lines, tourism experiences and more.

Bourbon production has skyrocketed more than 475% since the turn of the century.

Kentucky now boasts more than 11.4 million barrels of Bourbon aging in warehouses across the Bluegrass, the most in its revered distilling history. Distillers filled more than 2.6 million barrels in 2021 alone, the fourth consecutive year that production topped 2 million.

Attendance at the KDA’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® distilleries has surged more than 300% in the last 10 years. Total attendance in 2021 was more than 1.5 million visits, just below the pre-COVID record of 1.7 million visits in 2019.

Jack Daniel’s Releases Two Limited Edition Barrel Finished Rye Whiskeys

Lexi and Josh

Toasted Maple Barrel Rye and Toasted Barrel Finished Rye are selections #8 and #9 in Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series line of experimental whiskeys available only in Tennessee

Lynchburg, Tennessee (September 7, 2022) – The Jack Daniel Distillery introduces the latest expressions in its Distillery Series line of experimental whiskeys, formerly known as the Tennessee Tasters’ Selection. Specially selected by husband and wife team Josh and Lexie Phillips, Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series selection #8 is a Toasted Maple Barrel Rye and selection #9 is a Toasted Barrel Finished Rye.

“At Jack Daniel’s, we take pride in controlling every aspect of the whiskey making process, from cultivating our own yeast to crafting our own barrels. Having the Jack Daniel Cooperage gives us an unmatched ability to experiment with specifications to see how different materials and techniques can impart new flavors and aromas,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “These two barrel-finished rye whiskeys are a result of that experimentation process, and we think they stand out as truly unique offerings that reflect the spirit of craft and innovation we have here at the Jack Daniel Distillery.”

Toasted Maple Barrel Rye – Selected by Taster Josh Phillips

Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Toasted Maple Barrel Rye is a Straight Tennessee Rye Whiskey originally barrelled in March 2017 then finished in high-toast, no char maple barrels in September 2021. Toasted Maple Barrel Rye is bottled at 101 proof (50.5% abv) and features a sweet aroma of honey and vanilla with notes of maple, raisins, pralines, and butterscotch with a lasting finish of toasted marshmallow.

*UPCOMING RELEASE* DOUBLE CASK DC112 – Tasmanian Whisky News

DOUBLE CASK DC112

Introducing DC112, created using elements of ten Sullivans Cove single casks, masterfully blended by Distillery Manager, Heather Tillott. It is with a generous helping of 20 year old single cask HH0080, and a sprinkle of 7 year old TD0399, that Sullivans Cove Double Cask harnesses the incredible breadth of age and oak within our bond store. Creating something creamy, fruit forward and unmistakably Sullivans.

A gentle and deep ocean of savoury spice on sugar awaits: sandalwood incense, Lotus Biscoff, sweet cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. Sweet grain and marshmallows then meet a medley of walnuts, hazelnut praline and apples, moving into bright lemon marmalade, lime musk and old school roses with an earthen, forest soil base.

That’s just the nose.

“An excellently structured and integrated marriage of quite diverse elements. Each variety of oak and prefill are present, not least of all the tell-tale signs of the Sullivans spirit, and together they combine to birth a wholly unique and stunning beast.” – Heather Tillott, Distillery Manager

K&L Exclusive: 12-Year-Old Macduff Single-Malt in Refill Hogshead – Scotch Whisky News

A Hidden-Gem, 12-Year-Old Speysider for a Steal

2009 Macduff 12 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside
Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($54.99)

“…it’s an intriguing example of this under-the-radar distillery, and I love recommending it to open-minded, adventurous drinkers.” — David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

One of the best features of our K&L Exclusive Cask program is the remarkable selection of affordable, aged Scotch whiskies that our buyers source on a regular basis, often from top-notch distilleries that remain known mostly to industry insiders and avid connoisseurs. Speyside’s Macduff falls under the Dewars/Bacardi umbrella, so it’s a rare sight under its own name in the independent market, but whenever we find a cask, it’s always one of a kind. This truly distinctive hogshead offers an outside-the-box experience for any Scotch fan, with a chameleon-like profile that changes dramatically from nose to palate, with or without water. It’s a lovely dram for those who like to challenge their own preconceptions, but it’s also more than reasonably priced and approachable enough to serve as a thrilling wild card in your regular bar rotation.

2009 Macduff 12 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($54.99)

K&L Notes: Macduff sits well under the radar in the single-malt world. The official bottling from the distillery goes by the name of Deveron—the river on which the distillery sits. The only Macduff the world sees comes from the indendent bottlers, and with the current ownership falling to Dewar’s under the Bacardi umbrella, it is a wonder we see any at all. Fortunately, this 12-year-old hogshead snuck away from corporate ownership and wound up in our hands. Bottled at 57.9% ABV without chill-filtration or coloring, it’s a beautiful malt highlighting sweet vanilla and rich fudge notes all with a bit of fruitiness to round it out.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: November 29, 2022

This weird and wonderful cask of Macduff is definitely the odd-ball of this year’s selections. We always have to have one. It will certainly be controversial, eliciting strong responses on both sides of the fence, but it’s an intriguing example of this distillery, and I recommending it to open-minded, adventurous drinkers. The color is pale straw. The nose is an interesting mix of porridge and vanilla bean. Soft, not-so-sweet baked pastries and a subtle industrial plastic character on the nose, which is rather quiet at cask strength. There isn’t much fruit to speak of but an odd crystal malt character. This is contrasted wonderfully by the rich, malty and fruity character on the palate. Creamy and honeyed, with candied citrus and sweet malt syrup. The nose and palate are so distinctly different, and it finishes with a big ginger note and a lovely, rich spice. With water we start to open the nose toward the greengage and yellow plums. Now we’re talking! Tons of yellow fruit now and all the odd-ball aromas are gone. All that potential on the palate opens with air and water. Please do not judge this whisky by the first pour. It needs some time and should have water added, but once you see it you’ll be hard-pressed to look away. There always has to be an odd-ball during whisky season, and so here it is. But giving the odd-ball a fair chance is often one of the most rewarding things you can do.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: November 16, 2022

I always hope Macduff will be in the offering every year when we go to Scotland. It rarely is, but I seem to like nearly all the casks I taste. It’s a friendly malt and has one of the most unusual lyne arms you’ll see in all of Scotland. They twist around like an M.C. Escher woodcut. Maybe it’s the circuitous nature of the lyne that gives the malt such a distinct note. It’s a combination of chocolate lava cake, crème brulée, and gummy citrus candy that is quite irresistible. They’re all on display here, and the barrel itself seems to be a relatively non-descript, refill hoggie. The weight and mouthfeel is a perfect medium—just throwing strikes. The fruit leans towards the citrus side of the spectrum but offers a touch of ripe melon as well. Mostly the flavors keep coming back to chocolate and vanilla with a rich creamy, fudgey, pudding-esque sort of feel to them. It’s an easy drinker if there ever was one.
