1973 vintage from Glen Mhor Distillery which closed in 1983 and was demolished in 1988. Highly prized, rare casks having been one of the pioneering distilleries to release single malt whisky in the 1960s.

Matured in a refill sherry hogshead #85036801, yielding just 170 bottles at 47.2%. Bottled history.

Nose: Sweet stewed raisin aromas complement morello cherry and cocoa powder. Treacle toffee develops alongside soft polish and mature oak.

Taste: Seville orange zest combines with brown sugar and berry compote. Notes of baked apple come to the fore accompanied by a hint of menthol.

Finish: Long and full with lingering spice and citrus.

John Birnie and James Mackinlay commissioned Charles C. Doig to design Glen Mhor Distillery which was found in 1892 and constructed at Muirton Basin on the Caledonian Canal in Inverness. Glen Mhor Distillery was a Highland malt whisky distillery equipped with two stills and one of the pioneering distilleries to release single malt whisky back in the 1960s. Closed in 1983, dismantled in 1986, demolished 1988 and now one of Scotland’s lost malt whisky distilleries. With stock dwindling bottlings of Glen Mhor are highly prized particularly those released by Gordon & MacPhail.

Cask No. 4.371 brings sweet lavender, heather and cinnamon, coming from a lit incense stick, almost taking you into a state of meditation. To taste we moved to Spain and enjoyed a seafood paella accompanied by a glass of shiraz, with enticing flavours of vanilla and smoky berries in the finish.

Continuing our holiday to the seaside, Cask No. 4.366: Kelp me if you can is a mist of salty sea spray carried in the breeze onto fresh oysters, smoked mussels and battered haddock while heather honey was poured over caramel ice cream in a cone. A coastal wonder!

Three Glasgow-based artists commissioned by Chivas Regal adorn tanks with murals

Blended Scotch whisky Chivas, has partnered with three artists local to Glasgow to create striking murals on the 9.4m tall, rounded tanks at its Strathclyde Distillery, one of oldest grain distilleries in Scotland.

The project, delivered in partnership with Glasgow-based production company artpistol Projects, sees Molly Hankinson, Michael Corr and Rogue One transform the tanks with paintings of iconic local figures, with additional typography woven throughout by artistic signwriter Ellie Mills.

The art initiative was inspired by the close ties parent company, Chivas Brothers has with the Strathclyde Region. The Strathclyde Distillery’s single grain whisky is an essential part of Chivas Regal giving the iconic blend a delicate character that leads to the generously smooth taste synonymous with the brand.

The project is the latest activity under Chivas’ ‘I Rise, We Rise’ platform which demonstrates the brand’s continued commitment to celebrate and elevate the next generation of hustlers who are forging their own paths to success. Each mural pays homage to those who embody this ethos and have uplifted their community along the way. From Margaret Macdonald, an artist said to have helped define the ‘Glasgow Style’ movement of the 1890s-1900s, to Tom McGuire, frontman of 8-piece Glaswegian funk and soul band Tom McGuire & the Brassholes. The final mural celebrates the spirit of human adversity and triumph in overcoming obstacles and setbacks, by paying homage to Mark Coyle’s countless achievements whilst navigating the diagnosis of Perthes disease at an early age which left him wheelchair-bound and with his mobility restricted.

AW 15TH ANNIVERSARY

N: This classy Speysider shows a perfect balance of distillate and wood. Initially aromas of spiced gingerbread, Belgium waffle and sweet clove rock emerge, before complexity builds ripe orchard fruits, jaffa casks and tinned pineapple develop with time.

P: The palate shows a wonderful clean Moscatel character, with more sticky ginger bread, ripe apple, honeycomb and marzipan rolling round the palate. A little water shows deeper dried fruits and baking spice.

F: A long finish brings rich Dundee Cask and the suggestion of wood smoke. A rich, fulfilling and complex dram, ideal to unwind while contemplating the fifteen long years it’s taken to accomplish such a feat.

N: Huge, uncompromising aromas of new leather, hog roast, prunes and peat bog barbecue barge out of the glass, complexity builds with strawberry jam, cigars, and liquorice.

P: This theme continues on the palate showing grilled pork, alongside Frazzle crisps, with lashing of fig jam, prunes and espresso.

F: The finish rolls on and on with bacon fat, peat smoke and dried fruits. An extreme, energetic whisky, this dram will swim with jellyfish infested lochs, cycle a hundred miles and still fancy running a marathon over two munros!

Nose: Fragrant festive spices intertwine with clove studded irange and demerara sugar. Subtle toffee notes give way to prunes and baked apple.

Taste: Rich stewed red fruit flavours complement cinnamon and ginger hazelnuts develop alongside marzipan and mature oak.

Finish: Medium bodied with lingering citrus and nuts

The Mill of Banff Distillery was established by Major James McKilligan at Mains of Colleonard Farm just south of Banff in 1824 but closed in 1863 when Simpson’s son built a new distillery on a site at Inverboyndie and named it Banff Distillery. In 1983 Banff Distillery closed, was partially demolished in 1985 and most of the rest came down during a fire in 1991. Banff is a lost Highland malt whisky distillery with rare examples from the Gordon & MacPhail Rare Old series of bottlings, and all highly sought after.

Lowrie’s Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky 

This small batch blended scotch whisky has been created by Jack Lowrie and the Thompson Bros. They have curated this experience using 20.5% V.94 Single Grain, 19.9% V.12 Speyside Malt, 51.6% V.12 blended scotch (Sherry) and 8% SRV5/ Campervan Brewery Cask Finish. It was then rested and bottled with minimal filtration.
