Two years ago Jenna, Whisky A Go Girl, had an opportunity to taste through a selection of Killowen experimental casks that Head Distiller and Founder Brendan Carty was working on, and she instantly knew there was something unique, yet exceptional being made. The quality of the spirit was unlike anything she had ever tasted, and the flavour compositions were out of this world.

In her own words, ‘These were literal dream whiskies, each sip conjuring a flutter of emotions that I couldn’t quite understand. Since then I have been on a mission to get to the bottom of what makes these whiskies so special, and I believe it all comes down to love. Love for the craft, the people, the land. The story-telling that comes with the enjoyment of each bottle, the love of making something for the world that brings people together. After aging for 5 years in an ex-bourbon cask, this Cooley-born Irish Single Malt made its way to Killowen Distillery, and in the care of its brilliant team, it was transferred into an ex-peated Irish Whiskey cask from The Great Northern Distillery. It is bottled at cask strength, free of artificial coloring, and is non-chill filtered.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Rich juicy melon steeped in honey fill the nose, with notes of freshly cracked pepper and dried grass swaying in a warm breeze. A whisper of honeyed peat keeps your nose in the glass, searching for more.

Palate: A silken texture of whipped peated honey hits the palate and melts into a warm buttery mélange of fresh pancakes and melon-maple syrup, topped with a lemon – cardamom whipped cream.

Finish: Long citrus-peppery notes dance on the palate, making your mouth water for one more sip.

Meet Kenny Macleod who was born and brought up on Scalpay and has spent over 40 years of his life working at sea with HM Customs & Excise. After taking early retirement in 2019 he returned home to start his own business running Eilean Glas Rib Tours sharing the best of island wildlife and history with adventurous visitors.

Kenny has also been involved with the RNLI for almost three decades and currently supports our local Leverburgh Lifeboat as a training coordinator and launch authority. A century or two ago any distillers on Harris would be wary of an ex-Customs & Excise man, but safe to say these days we’re happy to applaud Kenny for playing such a big part in our island community!

A collection of whiskies from Scotland’s oldest independent bottler

Alongside the Dream Cask series will be a collection of whiskies from Cadenhead’s, Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, where the whiskies are matured and bottled in Campbeltown, the original home to whisky.  Founded in 1842, Cadenhead’s specialise in bottling single cask or small batch whisky from across Scotland and the rest of the world, adhering to an ethos that keeps the whisky making as natural as possible, allowing the true distillery character to shine through.

While Cadenhead’s has been operating for over 175 years, none of their bottlings are as sought after as the ‘dumpy’ style bottles offered in this sale. Produced during the 1970s and 80s, the series is instantly recognisable by the iconic short brown glass bottles, each featuring their own letterpress font according to the distillery, in homage to William Cadenhead’s early career in the printing business.

Highlights from Cadenhead’s ‘dumpy’ bottle collection include:

• Bowmore-23 year old-1964, distilled in March 1964 and bottled in April 1987.  Estimate:  £2,000-3,000

The Auld Alliance: Rare Whiskies from a Distinguished Collector sale 4-18 July, Edinburgh, online

Amassed over 20 years this Single Owner collection was curated by an avid collector who travelled the world seeking out the rarest and most desirable bottles of single malts, Cognac and Armagnac. The sale, taking place on bonhams.com, will feature some outstanding Remy Martin cognacs including Rémy Martin Louis XIII Grande Champagne Cognac – Le Mathusalem, Baccarat crystal decanter No. M037; 6 litre, 40% vol. FRANKFORT, KY (June 27, 2024) – Buffalo Trace Distillery is thrilled to announce Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Bourbon Whiskey, a new uncut, unfiltered rye recipe bourbon joining the Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Collection. Aged at Buffalo Trace Distillery, this limited-edition release is bottled at 126 proof and crafted with the highest standards of quality and innovation first introduced to the industry by its namesake.

Highly regarded as the “Father of the Modern Bourbon Industry,” Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. purchased O.F.C. Distillery (now Buffalo Trace Distillery) in 1869. Here, the whiskey trailblazer crafted straight rye whiskey over 100 years before its resurgence in the American whiskey landscape. He made an immediate mark on the industry by modernizing, expanding, and upgrading the plant with state-of-the-art grain equipment and a first-of-its-kind steam heating system still used in barrel warehouses in Buffalo Trace Distillery today. Taylor is celebrated for, among many things, playing an instrumental role in the passage of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.

Oran Blended Scotch Whisky Wins Silver Medals at

International Spirits Challenge

Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2 Both Take Home Silvers

NEW YORK (June 4, 2024) – Oran Blended Scotch Whisky, introduced by The Perfect Fifth in late 2023, has won silver medals at the International Spirits Challenge for its Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2 bottlings.

Whisky expert Jim Murray blended both Scotches for The Perfect Fifth and remarks, “There is a temptation to disregard blended Scotch in this time of single malt, yet the blend of grain whisky and malt is a creation which offers myriad possibilities.  The objective in the creation of Oran is to offer delicate complexity and finely tuned balance, which I believe we achieved.”

Both releases are 50-50-50 blends, 50 percent single malt Scotch Whisky, 50 percent single grain Scotch Whisky, and 50 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Both blends are limited releases, containing only 465 bottles each.

Murray designed Oran to be an “old school” blend recognizable to whisky lovers of the heyday of blended whisky some 100 years ago.  Oran’s grain and malt components are created separately but ultimately combined as the perfect complement to one another.

A total of 11 different casks were used to make both blends. Some of the casks were split between both blends but with differing ratios. Blend No. 1 is composed exclusively of Ex-Bourbon casks while Blend No. 2 distinguishes itself with the addition of a sherried cask component.

Oran Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2 are available in limited quantities at retailers in New York, New Jersey and California. It is also available online at www.theperfectfifth.com.  Suggested retail pricing is $189 per 700 mL.

The International Spirits Challenge is the premiere event for promoting outstanding quality spirits from more than 70 countries.  The competition is founded on a rigorous and independent judging process, which encourages the high caliber of spirits entered each year.

About The Perfect Fifth

The Perfect Fifth was created in 2019 by Karl Schoen, who was inspired by watching his family members toast milestones with Scotch Whisky as he grew up.  As Karl began his own exploration into the world of Scotch Whisky, he enjoyed finding stellar single cask bottlings and sharing them with others.  This led to the formation of The Perfect Fifth, where Karl and his brother Ben source the best quality whisky from all over Scotland.  Together they travel throughout Scotland, sampling cask after cask until they find those worthy to be selected for The Perfect Fifth.
