Beam Suntory Makes Significant Advancement in Protecting Scotland’s Peatlands with Third Major Restoration Partnership

Beam Suntory Makes Significant Advancement in Protecting Scotland’s Peatlands with Third Major Restoration Partnership

Beam Suntory announces funding and coordination of innovative restoration project in partnership with Northern Peat & Moss as part of its Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme

SCOTLAND, UK – Beam Suntory, a world leader in premium spirits, today announces a long-term project to restore peatland on Craigculter Moss, in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland, in partnership with Northern Peat & Moss. The project will use novel techniques to restore and replenish the peat bog, improving resilience to climate change, enhancing biodiversity and re-establishing nature-supporting habitats.

Initial restoration groundworks are already underway at the 60-hectare site in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Beam Suntory will fully fund the approximately £100,000 restoration project.

The restoration is part of the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme, a joint investment of over $4 million by Beam Suntory and its parent company, Suntory Holdings, into the conservation and restoration of peatlands.  While the Scotch Whisky industry is only responsible for a very modest percentage of Scotland’s peat use, Beam Suntory is committed to working in partnership with different site owners and conservationists to implement novel restoration techniques that will replenish any level of degraded peatland.

Craigculter is a heavily degraded peat moss, having historically been used to harvest peat for different industries, such as for fuel. Beam Suntory will demonstrate novel techniques on the moss to restore peat below the ‘standard’ threshold level, and in some areas, to reintroduce a functioning wetland on bare substrate.

Restoration will provide considerable benefits for carbon sequestration and increase water retention and distribution across the site to both reduce the rate of erosion and re-establish vegetation to the point where peat will once again accumulate naturally. This in turn will reduce the risk of local and regional flooding and restore the biodiversity and wildlife of this natural habitat.

As part of the project’s commitment to improve education and awareness about the importance of peat and biodiversity, Beam Suntory will facilitate knowledge-sharing with the wider Scotch Whisky industry and other research and conservationist groups to encourage further restoration and innovation.

Alistair Longwell, Head of Distillation & Environment, Beam Suntory, comments: “We are very proud of the progress we’ve made since launching the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme three years ago, with 206 hectares restored and 435 hectares in planning stages. This project at Craigculter marks an important step in our industry-wide commitment to restoring Scotland’s peatlands, proving that by implementing novel methods, we can push the boundaries of restoration and show that even historically degraded land can be replenished to a thriving natural habitat.”

Robbie Millar, President of Global Whisky and Prestige, Beam Suntory, adds: “Our global sustainability strategy, Proof Positive, lays out our commitment to making a positive impact on the environments and communities in which we operate. By collaborating with other organisations, landowners and expert conservationists, we can implement real change for these crucial watersheds, and we look forward to sharing our results and learnings with others as we progress the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ programme.”

Harumichi Seta, General Manager, Sustainability Management Division, Suntory Holdings, comments: “As a company sustained by the gifts of nature and water, we are dedicated to replenishing and protecting the natural wetlands across Scotland that play an indispensable role in water purification and biodiversity. We are steadfast in our long-term restoration targets and hope to bring many more partners on the journey with us, to maximise our collective positive impact on nature and society.”

About Peatland Water Sanctuary™
The Peatland Water Sanctuary™ is a large-scale series of peatland restoration and watershed conservation projects in Scotland launched in 2021 by Beam Suntory and its parent company, Suntory Holdings. Through PWS™, the companies have committed to invest more than $4 million to the restoration and conservation of 1,300 hectares of peatlands by 2030, enough to produce the same amount of peat that Beam Suntory uses to make its peated whiskies on an ongoing basis. Beyond this, there is a longer-term aim to restore sufficient peatlands by 2040 to equate twice what Beam Suntory uses.

The PWS™ programme began with work to restore and conserve peatland near the Ardmore distillery in November 2021 in partnership with the James Hutton Institute and Forestry & Land Scotland. Beam Suntory has also partnered with the RSPB Scotland to regenerate peatland at the Airds Moss reserve in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Across its projects, Beam Suntory has already restored 206 hectares of peatland, with a further 435 hectares in active planning stages.

The PWS™ programme aligns with the Suntory Group Sustainability Vision and Beam Suntory’s ambitious Proof Positive sustainability strategy, as well as the Scotch Whisky Association’s environmental commitments.

THE GLENLIVET UNVEILS A NEW ERA OF CASK CRAFTSMANSHIP – Scotch Whisky News

THE GLENLIVET UNVEILS A NEW ERA OF CASK CRAFTSMANSHIP

New release, The Glenlivet Caskmakers, adopts a pioneering method of cask craftmanship, as the celebrated single malt continues to honour its 200th anniversary.

Iconic Speyside single malt, The Glenlivet, introduces its new release, The Glenlivet Caskmakers. This distinguished Scotch whisky is the result of a remarkable feat in craftsmanship in which two casks are uniquely combined to deliver a complex interplay of flavours.

Exploring a novel technique in cask construction, the process sees two hand-selected barrels meticulously deconstructed and recrafted – combining alternating staves of the two – to create one new, reconstructed cask.

These distinctive new casks, which unite ex-Spanish Sherry and freshy charred European Oak barrels, have been skilfully developed by The Glenlivet’s experts in collaboration with master coopers based in Jerez, Spain. The intricate craftmanship exemplifies The Glenlivet’s longstanding spirit of innovation and brings with it new depths of flavour.

Whisky enthusiasts tasting The Glenlivet Caskmakers will uncover notes of ripe orchard fruits, fresh honey, warming spices, and hints of charred pineapple. Thanks to the whisky’s painstaking craft, which sees a portion selectively finished in the bespoke casks, these flavours combine even more seamlessly, producing a single malt that not only stands as a testament to the art of originality but celebrates the power of collaboration.

Kevin Balmforth, The Glenlivet Cask Master, comments:

As we continue to celebrate our 200-year milestone, The Glenlivet Caskmakers embodies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of cask craftmanship in whisky making. This exceptional release, born from harnessing a complex new technique, not only honours our rich history but showcases our relentless drive towards innovation and excellence. Integrating this method of cask creation elevates the complexity of the whisky’s flavour profile and represents our dedication to constantly exciting whisky connoisseurs around the globe.”

The Glenlivet has pioneered two centuries of pushing boundaries in whisky, from its inception to this day, and remains committed to continuously setting new standards of excellence in single malts for the next 200 years.

The Glenlivet Caskmakers will be available exclusively in selected Duty-Free stores in airports and travel hubs around the globe from May 2024 for $225

Limestone Branch Distillery expands barrel program and opens new tasting lodge for barrel picks – Hand Picked Whiskey News

Limestone Branch Distillery expands barrel program and opens new tasting lodge for barrel picks

Barrel picks of Yellowstone Bourbon Hand Picked, Minor Case Rye and Yellowstone American Single Malt Whiskey can be sampled and selected in a new private tasting space at the distillery

ST. LOUIS (May 6, 2024) – Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky, has opened the Stephen B. Beam Tasting Lodge, a new 1,250 square-foot tasting space dedicated to its expanded barrel program. The lodge is named after Limestone Branch Distillery’s founder and pays homage to his love of Yellowstone National Park. The new building will accommodate customers selecting barrel picks of Yellowstone Bourbon Hand Picked, Yellowstone American Single Malt Whiskey and Minor Case Rye 6-Year.

“It’s humbling and exciting to have the Tasting Lodge named in my honor because it’s an expansion of our dream to bring our family recipes and traditions to customers in small batches since opening Limestone Branch Distillery more than 10 years ago,” said Limestone Branch Distillery Master Distiller Stephen Beam. “And for the first time, we’re able to offer Yellowstone American Single Malt Whiskey and Minor Case Rye barrel selections for customers to taste and choose from in addition to our Yellowstone Bourbon Hand Picked Kentucky Straight Bourbon,” said Beam.

Kentucky’s bourbon industry topped records in 2023 with 2.5 million visitor experiences, according to the Bourbon Economic Impact Report published in February by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. As one of the state’s craft distilleries, Limestone Branch designed its Tasting Lodge as a private yet comfortable setting to accommodate up to 20 guests at a time in a dedicated, stand-alone building overlooking the natural beauty of the property. The distillery will offer VIP opportunities for cocktail mixology classes, premium tastings and private events in addition to the one-of-a-kind exclusive barrel pick program experiences for consumer and retail customers.

“As we continue to expand our barrel program to include more unique and sought-after selections, we wanted to create a dedicated space for customers to fully experience these offerings,” said Luxco Barrel Program Manager Casey Shirley. “The addition of the private Tasting Lodge provides the ideal location for customers to get to know our award-winning brands a little better and sample and select the perfect barrel.”

For customers who are not able to visit Kentucky, they have the option of receiving mailed selection kits of the distillery’s barrel offerings. These kits contain sample selections hand-picked by the Limestone Branch team, branded glassware, a tasting notebook and a step-by-step tasting video led by Limestone Branch Distillery Executive Bourbon Steward Stephen Fante with in-depth information about the specific offerings.

About the 2024 Yellowstone Bourbon Hand Picked selections

Available at the distillery or via a mailed selection kit, the Yellowstone Hand Picked Collection is a series of Kentucky Straight Bourbon single barrels aged for a minimum of 4 years. Customers can choose among three proof options (109, 115 and 119). About the 2024 Yellowstone American Single Malt Hand Picked selections

The mash bill is 51% rye, 45% corn and 4% barley, and customers can choose among three unique proof points (105, 110 and 115). Each single barrel of Minor Case 6-Year Straight Rye Whiskey yields approximately 30 6-in cases of 750mL bottles, with a suggested retail price of $59.99.
