Blue Run “K&L Exclusive” Cask Strength Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon ~ Whiskey News

Blue Run “K&L Exclusive” Cask Strength Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) $139.99 View

David Othenin-Girard K&L Buyer Review Date: 10/2024

We’ve long been fans of the Blue Run brand. In fact, I’m fairly confident that K&L was the first retailer to sell the product after their impressive DTC launch. They did a lot of stuff right and ultimately became the darling of the industry when it counted most. Now the brand is owned by Coors and we can offer this crazy deal due to their vast resources, but the heart and soul of Blue Run remains the same. Killer bourbon hand curated by our dear friend Jim Rutledge and bottled in the now iconic butterfly bottle.

This single barrel has a stark white emblem emboldened on the bottle, contrasting the rich amber color of the bourbon. This barrel was picked out by the staff in Los Angeles from a large batch of casks while I was travelling in Kentucky and while we don’t have a lot of information beyond the mashbill, which is already mysterious, I love this style and I’m proud of their choice.

Plus, with a $30 rebate with the QR code, this is a now brainer for any lover of cask strength bourbon. Let’s taste it!

The color is a shimmering chestnut (1.2). I poured this and walked away for 25 minutes, but when I made it back the nose was full of superb fruit and fresh rich wood character. There’s some spicy nuance behind that, but mostly we’ve got tons of sweet, tinned peaches, vanilla fudge, candied apricots to balance the twinges of cinnamon.

The palate offers a core of sweet caramel with a building baking spice character as the high proof builds on the palate. It’s not hot or overly spicy and the fresh vibrant fruit translates nicely on the palate. Hard to say where this is coming from, but likely this is some of the old Rutledge distilled Bardstown or Castle & Key stock.

In any case, it’s a fabulous refreshing take on the American classic in a beautiful bottle. Superb selection from the LA team.

Town Branch®️ Releases Oldest Ever Bottled-in-Bond American Single Malt Whiskey

Town Branch®️ Releases Oldest Ever Bottled-in-Bond American Single Malt Whiskey

Availability Limited to Select Markets and Town Branch Distillery

LEXINGTON, Ky, December 18, 2024— Town Branch Distillery, the primary distilling operation of Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co.—the only brewery and distillery on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®—is proud to announce the inaugural release of its Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Single Malt Whiskey Archive Series. This multi-year collection will feature some of the oldest American Single Malt Whiskey in the world, all distilled, aged, and bottled in Kentucky under bond by Town Branch Distillery in Lexington.

The first release, Town Branch 15-Year Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Single Malt Whiskey Archive Series Vol. 1 is the oldest Bottled-in-Bond American Single Malt Whiskey ever made. It will be available at Town Branch Distillery and in select states across the U.S. at a suggested retail price of $399.99 for a 750ml bottle.

Town Branch®️ Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Single Malt Whiskey Archive Series

In 2009, Dr. Pearse Lyons, the visionary founder of Town Branch Distillery, commissioned a select number of Single Malt whiskey barrels, crafted from 100% malted barley and distilled in a single season by one distiller. These special barrels were hand-selected to form the Town Branch Archive Series, showcasing some of the oldest American Single Malt Whiskey in the world. Each annual release, starting in 2024 and continuing through 2030, honors the rich legacy of the Lyons family in brewing, distilling, and cooperage. Bottled-in-Bond, 100 Proof, Non-Chill Filtered, and Single Barrel, every bottling a one-of-a-kind experience and a testament to generations of craftsmanship.

After tasting each barrel allocated to the project in late July 2024, their 15th birthday, our team selected Barrel Serial Number 222, filled on July 2, 2009 (lot date 09G02) to represent the inaugural 15-Year-Old release as Archive Series Vol 1. This barrel embodies the perfect balance between American Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey, with a rich, robust flavor profile enhanced by extended aging in former Kentucky bourbon barrels. It serves as an ideal starting point for this historic series of single malt whiskey releases, which we’re excited to share over the coming years.

Each release includes a collector’s coin minted to commemorate the Archive Series. These tokens are more than just keepsakes; they offer exclusive access to your experience at Town Branch Distillery. As a coin holder, you are entitled to unlimited free tours for life, making you a cherished part of our family.

“When you select our special single malt whiskey release, you became part of our family’s traditions and legacy. It’s personal – and a privilege to share it with you,” says Mark Lyons, owner and the 7th generation of the Lyons family in the brewing, distilling, and cooperage industries.

Simply present your Collector’s Coin upon arrival to enjoy lifetime tour privileges, along with exclusive benefits reserved for our extended family. No prior booking is necessary—we always welcome you with open arms.

Invergordon 1974 50 Year Old, Finn Thomson Cask #12 – Tyndrum Whisky News

£380.00

This rare single grain whisky from Invergordon, Scotland’s northernmost grain distillery, is a masterpiece shaped by time and tradition. Known for producing whiskies with a uniquely smooth and creamy profile, this 50-year-old expression exemplifies the transformative power of extended maturation.

Typically destined for blends at a younger age, grain whisky develops astonishing complexity when left to mature. Left undisturbed in a single cask for half a century, the whisky has evolved into an extraordinary spirit, showcasing a stunning array of flavours.

Bursting with notes of ripe peaches, nectarines, and delicate vanilla cream, it offers a velvety mouthfeel complemented by subtle hints of almond, coconut, and a whisper of oak. This rare release not only celebrates the art of grain whisky but also redefines its potential, proving that, when given time, grain whisky can rival even the most revered malts in depth and complexity.

2007 Glengoyne 16YO “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Sherry Butt Cask Strength ~ Single Malt Whisky News

2007 Glengoyne 16 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Refill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (700ml) $109.99 View

David Othenin-Girard K&L Buyer

Review Date: 09/2024

We’ve only bottled a handful of Glengoynes over the last 15 years and all but one have been 2nd or 3rd fill hogsheads. The last one we did was about the most controversial whisky we’ve ever bottled, a PX butt bottled by Old Particular. That whisky was so weird and wine-y, customers either loved it uncontrollably or were completely revolted by it. There was no in-between. This whisky, on the other hand, will almost certainly result in consensus across the board. This beautiful butt, which I assumed was first fill albeit not very dark due to its complexity and flavor, is so creamy and friendly. There may not be another more drinkable malt in the store. Let’s see!

The color is a splendid burnished (1.1). Immediately on the nose we get roasted almonds, dried Seville orange peel, fresh mango with the skins, rich toffee syrup, exotic wood and a rich dried barley note. With air the sweetness and the toffee come forward, but it doesn’t forget about the fruit.

The palate has tons of sweet chocolate, beeswax, sandalwood, dried apricots, and a building spice -ginger root and cinnamon. The finish is very long with a big tingly spice that pushes the sweetness of the nose and front palate out of mind until the next sip. A tiny splash of water brings out the nuts and the fruit. Now there’s tons of citrus and a strong almond butter character. The palate too has added tons of fruit, and the ginger is a lingering afterthought. This is just so good. Mostly when I’m wanting to drink scotch it’s something like this, tons of complexity, but not overpowered by any one element.

The perfectly balanced whisky especially with a dash of fresh spring water. Hard to argue that this isn’t one of the best casks of the whisky season, especially for the seasoned sipper who craves balance and depth over power and intensity.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Whisky Of The Year 2024 – Scotch Whisky News

WHISKY OF THE YEAR 2024

Folks, here it is. Whisky of the year.

It’s been a tricky decision to put one of these products on a bigger pedestal than the others, especially with just one of them breaking that £100 price tag.

The winner is well deserved, but a shout out to the huge effort that goes into creating and releasing whiskies like this. A majority of these liquid have been easy to aquire, depending on where you are in the world. I’m just hoping you all get to try and share these amongst all of your other whisky fans and family. That’s what it’s all for.

Lochlea Distillery appoints award-winning Master Blender Jill Boyd – Scotch Whisky News

Lochlea Distillery appoints award-winning Master Blender Jill Boyd

Farm-to-cask Ayrshire distillery Lochlea is delighted to announce the appointment of Jill Boyd as their new Master Blender.

Boyd, originally from Elgin, is an award-winning blender who previously worked at William Grant & Sons as a Laboratory Analyst, before joining Compass Box as Whisky Maker and Brand Ambassador in 2017.

In 2020 she was awarded the title of Master Blender of the Year at the Scottish Icons of Whisky Awards.

In her new role, Boyd will oversee the creation of all new Lochlea whiskies, as well as maintaining current award-winning spirit standards.

On joining Lochlea, Jill said: “I am so thrilled to become part of the incredible team at Lochlea. With passion and enthusiasm at the heart of everything they do, I cannot wait to contribute to their journey and help to shape the future of their exceptional whisky.”

Owner of Lochlea, Neil McGeoch, adds: “I am very excited that the opportunity arose for Jill to join the Lochlea team as our Master Blender. Her breadth, depth of experience, and her success in blending at Compass Box in particular, gives me great confidence that Lochlea whisky is in very good hands.”

About Lochlea Distillery:

Lochlea was originally a 222-acre livestock farm before being purchased by Neil and Jen McGeoch in 2006. After much consideration of the future of the farm and a successful trial to grow its own barley in 2015, the couple transformed the land and existing farm buildings into a fully operational distillery in 2017 and started distilling the following year. The farming side has remained a unique part of Lochlea, with the move into barley production – paving the way for Lochlea to be one of the very few fully grain-to-cask distilleries in Scotland. It also has a rich Scottish heritage with strong links to Robbie Burns, with the bard having worked and lived on the farm a several years.

Lochlea Distillery has recently won the following awards:

– Our Barley: Platinum (Las Vegas Global Spirit Awards)

– Our Barley: Gold (Great British Food Awards)
