A 24-Year-Old K&L Exclusive Cask from Blair Athol – Scotch Whisky News

A Magnificent, First Fill Sherry Cask from a Favorite Highland Distillery
1995 Blair Athol 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
(Pre-Arrival)
($119.99)

For time-sensitive bottles this November/December, please get your orders in early. Thanks and happy holidays! We appreciate your business. NOTE: Our walk-in retail locations are currently closed. We have curbside pickup and low cost (often free) delivery options available in ZIP codes where we can ship lawfully, including anywhere in California. We can also include any new or existing will call orders in your delivery batch. Choose local delivery at checkout to learn if you qualify.

We’ve been bringing in exclusive casks from Blair Athol for a while now, and every time we’re impressed with the exceptional quality of the spirit coming from this small Highland distillery. Like many Scotch collectors, we have a special place in our heart for first-fill sherry casks, a treatment that often imparts greater complexity and potency of flavor, making for a beguiling and irresistible dram. All this holds true here, but Blair Athol is known for crafting whiskies that offer a more savory approach. This counterpoint of the richness of the sherry butt against the malt’s savory tones is exquisite and will delight even the most seasoned collectors. Is this the best Blair Athol we’ve encountered? It is hard to say, but there’s no question that it ranks among the top. Because we are bringing this cask in directly, it comes with substantial savings. Casks with this kind of significant age statement very often come with a considerable premium. Hence, finding one for just under $120 is pretty remarkable. Those who fancy a classic old-school Highland malt with an unmistakable sherry influence won’t want to miss this exceptional find from Blair Athol.

1995 Blair Athol 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($119.99) — This product is expected to arrive for shipment or pickup by the end of November 2020.

This little distillery outside of Pitlochry is one of Scotland’s most picturesque. Few know it well on this side of the pond, but there’s a constant stream of visitors arriving to tour the famous home of Bell’s Blend. This regional blend is very popular in the U.K. and we’ve been lucky to have a steady stream of casks coming from the lovely distillery. Located just a few clicks south of the even tinier Edradour distillery, the beautiful stone buildings were originally constructed in 1798, but closed soon after opening. Now covered in vines, the distillery reopened in 1825 only to be mothballed again a century later in 1932. Finally, in 1949 it was purchased and reopened by Arthur Bell & Sons, destined to become the heart malt for their eponymous blend. The distillery features two wash and two spirit stills and a total capacity of 2.5 million liters per year, although it’s unlikely they get close to that quantity. The spirit’s character is medium to full-bodied with a distinct herbal note that lends itself nicely to maturation in sherry casks. We’ve managed to keep these excellent first fill sherry casks at an altogether reasonable price point despite the increasing age and unbelievable quality. This is one of the more complex and savory sherry butts we’ll see this year with a full body and an unctuous texture. It’s not designed for those expecting sweeter flavors, but also refrains from crossing the savory line toward sulfur. This butt turned out 262 bottles at cask strength.

Inaugural Elijah Craig Old Fashioned Week Raises $100,000 for Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation – American Whiskey News

Inaugural Elijah Craig Old Fashioned Week Raises $100,000 for Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation

“We are humbled by the perseverance of our hospitality partners and the advocacy of the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation during this difficult time,” said Max Stefka, Senior Brand Manager, Elijah Craig Bourbon. “At the onset of the inaugural Elijah Craig Old Fashioned Week, we committed raising up to $100,000 through support from fans on social media, donations, and engagement with our ambassadors. Together we reached that goal.”BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Elijah Craig Bourbon today announced a $100,000 donation to the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation stemming from the success of the inaugural Old Fashioned Week.  More than 22,000 registrants, and thousands of fans on social media, joined Elijah Craig from Oct. 16 – 25 on social and digital platforms to celebrate a great cocktail for an even greater cause.

As the hospitality community continues to feel the effects of COVID-19, Elijah Craig recognizes the need to rally around those who support both the brand and the industry with their creativity, passion, and hard work. The Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation (RWCF) is an advocacy and action nonprofit created by and for restaurant workers. Donations will go toward direct financial assistance, grants to non-profit partners, and to a zero-interest loan program for small businesses.

“We are grateful for Elijah Craig’s support, especially at a time when it’s become increasingly clear that restaurant workers continue to suffer and the industry as a whole will not be coming back to health anytime soon,” said John deBary, Co-Founder and Board President of Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation. “RWCF will continue to fundraise so that we can direct much needed financial assistance to restaurant workers, bolster nonprofit organizations that serve restaurant workers in crisis, and provide zero-interest loans for restaurants while helping them consider ways they can recreate workplaces that better support their workers.”

During Old Fashioned Week, Elijah Craig hosted a lineup of live activations designed to be both educational and entertaining in support of RWCF. Highlights of the week included an “Old Fashioned Cocktail Hour” with Celebrity Chef Richard Blais and friends, “Old Fashioned Bar Trivia” with Heaven Hill Distillery Ambassadors Bernie Lubbers and Jack Choate, “The Art of Crafting Ice” with Portland-based bartender and author Jeffrey Morgenthaler, and “Elevating Your Home Bar” with Devin Kennedy, bartender at Pouring Ribbons. To relive the action, visit OldFashionedWeek.com.

ABOUT ELIJAH CRAIG BOURBON: Elijah Craig Bourbon bears the name of the Reverend Elijah Craig, known as “The Father of Bourbon,” who established his distillery in 1789 on the banks of Elkhorn Creek in modern day Georgetown, Kentucky. He is credited with being the first distiller to age his wares in charred oak barrels. The clear, unaged corn liquor became transformed into a bold amber liquid with a distinctively smooth flavor that makes Bourbon what it is today. Produced by Heaven Hill Distillery, the family of whiskeys includes Elijah Craig Small Batch, Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and Elijah Craig Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

First brought to market in 1986, Heaven Hill Distillery’s Master Distillers were selecting a small number of barrels of the finest Bourbon to make Elijah Craig Small Batch long before the term “small batch” even existed. It is this attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that give Elijah Craig an ideal balance of age, robust body, and rich flavor. Elijah Craig accolades have included Whisky Advocate’s Whisky of the Year, Best Small Batch Bourbon and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and Excellent Highly Recommended honors at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. ABOUT RESTAURANT WORKERS’ COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: “Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation is an advocacy and action nonprofit created by and for restaurant workers. RWCF was founded in 2018 to advocate for – and raise funds for other nonprofits working toward – gender equity, racial justice, fair wages, and healthy work environments in the restaurant industry. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, RWCF’s additional focus is on supporting workers in crisis and small business owners with the Restaurant Workers COVID19 Crisis Relief Fund.

RWCF is America’s first nonprofit using the community foundation model to support people in a particular labor segment. We are a community dedicated to making the restaurant industry more hospitable to everyone. In our normal model (prior to the establishment of the crisis relief fund) one third of the funds we raise goes to our own community-building and advocacy efforts, one third to grantmaking to other nonprofits (ones that provide career training, advocate for fair wage policies and worker rights, or provide services for restaurant workers related to gender and racial equity, and mental health and substance abuse) and one third is allocated to an impact investing fund, with which we aim to positively affect worker rights in the industry.

Bulleit teams up with American Forests to plant one million trees over the next five years in continued fight against climate change – American Whiskey News

Bulleit teams up with American Forests to plant one million trees over the next five years in continued fight against climate change

The latest green-forward initiative comes on the heels of several Bulleit and Diageo commitments to a more sustainable future, and is part of the Bulleit Frontier Fund

Bulleit Frontier Whiskey has teamed up with American Forests, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States and a leader in forestry innovation, with the goal to plant one million trees over the next five years. As a fundamental part of the recently announced Bulleit Frontier Fund, this initiative reaffirms the brand’s long-standing commitment to a more sustainable future for the bartending and hospitality industry, and the communities surrounding it.

As a brand focused on building community, Bulleit aims to support pioneers like American Forests who are pushing the frontier of sustainability forward, to aid in a healthier future of our planet. The partnership with American Forests announced today reflects this mission.

“At Bulleit, we believe now more than ever that businesses have a responsibility to our environment, our communities and our planet. We’re so excited about our partnership with American Forests, because it allows us to further our commitment to sustainability and help in the fight against climate change by planting these trees, which will provide a variety of environmental benefits for years to come including carbon sequestration, air purification, water conservation, and providing vital wildlife habitat.”

Sophie Kelly Sr. Vice President of Whiskey at Diageo North America

The partnership will reforest eastern landscapes dominated by white oaks, a key species for wildlife, water conservation and forest products.

Together, Bulleit and American Forests will not only plant trees but also utilize innovative forestry, including using prescribed fire to facilitate natural oak restoration and planting trees in ways that will help them thrive in a changing climate.

These one million trees planted through the Bulleit and American Forests partnership will provide a variety of environmental benefits for years to come. American Forests has calculated these benefits to include:

  • Carbon Sequestration
  • Air Purification
  • Water Conservation
  • Providing Vital Wildlife Habitat

Bulleit has prioritized white oak restoration because in addition to being a cornerstone species of forests in the Eastern United States, white oaks are essential to the future of so many industries, including the whiskey industry. By definition, bourbon must be aged in new charred oak containers (e.g., barrels), and its thanks to white oak that the delicious toasty, vanilla, caramel, nutty notes come to life when consumers enjoy a glass of Bulleit Bourbon or Bulleit Rye. As the bourbon matures in the barrel, the wood naturally contracts and expands during Kentucky’s four distinct seasons, pulling the liquid in and out of the inner portion of the stave, therefore bringing out wood sugars and tannins to enhance the whiskey’s flavor over the years. Once one of our Bulleit barrels is used to age bourbon, the life cycle of the barrel continues with the majority of barrels being used for many years to age other spirits like scotch, rum, and tequila.

It is a priority for both Bulleit and its parent company, Diageo, to operate responsibly and preserve natural resources for future generations. The commitment of Bulleit to plant one million trees over five years, will contribute to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Diageo is part of a group of organizations that are championing a green recovery and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through various advocacy groups. Diageo recently signed onto the Business for Nature‘s Call to Action, joining more than 560 companies to urge governments around the world for collective action and ambitious nature policies.

In addition to its reforestation efforts in large landscapes, Bulleit has committed to supporting American Forests’ goal of creating tree equity and green space in urban areas. These Community ReLeaf efforts are set to kick-off in 2021 in Louisville, KY.

“White oak forests benefit every aspect of our lives, from providing clean air and water to the amazing smells and flavors in a glass of bourbon. This great new partnership with Bulleit will give back to these forests by taking care of white oak-dominated forests for long-term health and resilience.”

Jad DaleyPresident and CEO of American Forests

As Bulleit continues to champion their commitments to build a more sustainable future, Bulleit reminds consumers to drink and live responsibly.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Caol Ila Distillers Edition – Scotch Whisky News

https://youtu.be/UkH5Mll5Miw

Situated on the northern coast of Islay, Caol Ila is a favourite. It combines the powerful smoke of the island with a welcoming and very characterful sweet creaminess.  What makes this Distiller’s Edition slightly different: an extra few months in Moscatel wine casks, making that creaminess ever more indulgent and allowing the sweetness to be more balanced with the smoke. Avoiding the herbal route that Islay whiskies can usually wander down, this is elegant, bold and has a sweetness that is approachable for those who both love and are perhaps avoidant of Islay whiskies most of the time

Compass Box “Something Quite Magical is Happening in Whisky” – Scotch Whisky News

REVEALING A NEW
LIMITED EDITION BEFORE YOUR
VERY EYES

Some things are so surprising you wonder how they can possibly be true. And that’s exactly what our whiskymakers thought when they sampled cask #2 from our 2016 maturation trials: a robust one-year-old malt spirit re-racked in first fill Oloroso-seasoned butts and aged for a further three years. How could it develop such deliciousness in so little time?

Then, when we blended it with a parcel of first fill Bourbon barrels containing whisky from the now-closed Imperial Distillery, we really did think there were magical forces at work.

Tasting is believing though, and you’ll soon be able to experience it yourself. Magic Cask is being released gradually in regions from now until early February 2021. Please check our website and social channels for more information on availability. For those who appreciate lush fruitiness and fullness of body in their malt whiskies, it will be worth waiting for.

We look forward to sharing it with you.
