Leading sustainable Scotch tourism with four new Green Tourism awards – Scotch Whisky News

Leading sustainable Scotch tourism with four new Green Tourism awards

Four of our famous Scotch Whisky distilleries have been awarded the UK’s highest eco-tourism award in another milestone on the journey to a greener future.

Lagavulin, Blair Athol, Oban and Clynelish distilleries have all received the prestigious gold certification from Green Tourism for their sustainable practices, both in the brand home visitor experiences and the distillery operations.

They join sister distilleries Glenkinchie and Royal Lochnagar on the list of Diageo Scotch Whisky distilleries to receive the top Green Tourism accreditation. Only eight distilleries in total in Scotland have this accreditation, with Diageo now holding six.

Zero waste to landfill, biodiversity enhancement, energy efficiency, local sourcing, community engagement and plastic reduction were among the achievements praised by the assessors across the whisky attractions.

Oban Distillery has been key to helping raise the standards for sustainable practice across the drinks industry. The distillery switched to biofuels in 2018, reducing its carbon footprint by 98%, and last year introduced a new water reduction initiative, allowing the site to save approximately 80,000 litres of water a week.

The distillery is also working with the world’s leading Scotch Whisky, Johnnie Walker, to plant 189,000 trees in Ballygowan, across 85.5 hectares, to restore woodland and promote wildlife diversity in Argyll, as part of Johnnie Walker’s commitment to plant a million trees across Scotland by 2025.

On Islay, which is world-renowned for its smoky, peaty whiskies, Lagavulin has led the preservation of peatlands through a partnership with RSPB that is working to restore and conserve almost 700 acres of peat bog on the island.

Clynelish Distillery in Brora, which is currently undergoing a major transformation as part of our £185m investment in Scotch whisky tourism, was recognised for its efforts to encourage sustainable travel, with the installation of cycle racks and planned electric vehicle charging points.

Perthshire’s Blair Athol distillery was praised for its dedication to recycling across the business, including the recycling of its pot ale syrup for animal feed, which saves 850 tanker movements and 15,000 litres of water annually. Adding to its eco-friendly credentials, the distillery was also commended for using old pallets and discarded materials to create wildlife boxes to improve biodiversity for native birds and insects.

Our commitment to sustainability is part of our wider ten-year sustainability action plan to make a positive impact on the world by 2030, including a target of being net-zero from our operations by the end of the decade. We are also currently investing £185m in our Scotch whisky tourism experience which will see the opening of the state-of-the-art Johnnie Walker Princes Street whisky experience in Edinburgh this summer, investment into 12 of our Scotch brand homes and the revival of lost distilleries Port Ellen and Brora.

LEXIE PHILLIPS MAKES HISTORY AS JACK DANIEL’S FIRST FEMALE ASSISTANT DISTILLER – American Whiskey News

LEXIE PHILLIPS MAKES HISTORY AS JACK DANIEL’S FIRST FEMALE ASSISTANT DISTILLER

Former Distillery Lead Operator Will Collaborate with Master Distiller Chris Fletcher on Whiskey Innovation

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (March 16, 2021) – The Jack Daniel Distillery announced today that Lexie Phillips has been named Assistant Distiller, making her the first woman to serve in that official capacity for the iconic Tennessee Whiskey brand. Phillips will serve as a collaborator with Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Chris Fletcher.

Phillips, who has worked in Lynchburg for more than seven years, previously was instrumental in Jack Daniel’s quality control and distillery operations, most recently serving as distillery lead operator. In her new role, she will support the overall quality and innovation of Jack Daniel’s from “grain to glass” and serve as a brand ambassador.

“I am honored to step into the role of Assistant Distiller and look forward to working alongside and learning from Chris and the best whiskey makers in the world,” said Phillips. “Making Tennessee Whiskey has been my life’s passion, and I am grateful to be able to inspire a new generation of women to follow in my footsteps.”

Born and raised just outside of Lynchburg, TN, Phillips is one of dozens of family members who have worked or currently work at the Jack Daniel Distillery. She played a pivotal role in the distillation and launch of the recently released Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye.

“Lexie brings a deep knowledge of distillery history and a natural talent for whiskey-making to her new position,” said Chris Fletcher. “She represents the future of our craft, and I am thrilled to now have her by my side as we work together to ensure the highest character and quality of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.”

Phillips earned her degree in agricultural science from Middle Tennessee State University. Lexie and her husband Josh, who also works at the distillery as a processor, live in Estill Springs, TN.

Introducing Glenfiddich Grande Couronne 👑 at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Introducing Glenfiddich Grande Couronne

Glenfiddich Grande Couronne 26 Year Old is elegance personified in whisky.

Deriving its name from the French for ‘crown’, this whisky should be the crowning glory of any evening, toasted during the most special of occasions. For 26 years at the Glenfiddich Distillery it has refined in flavour in American and European oak barrels, with a long finish in rare French Cognac casks to add warm spice, brown sugar sweetness and complexity.

On the nose there is a vibrant yet buttery aroma, reminiscent of the scents from a French patisserie. On the palate, enjoy notes of velvety smooth café crème with brown sugar and spice. It ends with long lasting flavours of sweet, toasted oak thanks to its extended finish in French Cognac casks.

Bottled at 43.8% ABV, the packaging is opulent and inside the gold emblazoned rotating box is an interior of Fresco artwork. This will look the part on any whisky shelf.
