Locogen and Logan Energy help Arbikie Highland Estate Distillery move towards Net-Zero Dram – Scotch Whisky News

On Burns Night (January 25th) we were delighted to announce that Locogen’s client, the Arbikie Highland Estate Distillery, had won Phase 1 funding from the Green Distilleries competition run by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to investigate switching from gas oil to hydrogen for their primary process fuel.

So it’s fitting that, on World Whisky Day, we can announce that after a successful Phase 1 feasibility study, Arbikie are applying for Phase 2 funding – and a share of a £10 million funding pot – to implement zero-carbon green hydrogen as their primary process fuel.

The Green Distilleries fund aims to help distilleries cut CO2 emissions by one million tonnes, contributing to Scotland’s national target to be carbon neutral by 2045, with each distillery deploying innovative green solutions in order to achieve these ambitious goals.

Arbikie Highland Estate Distillery are determined to find a low carbon alternative to gas oil to further improve their already impressive sustainability and environmental credentials.

Renewable energy specialist Locogen and hydrogen technology expert Logan Energy are therefore partnering with Arbikie to deliver an innovative solution, using green hydrogen produced onsite using electrolysis from wind and solar generation as the zero-carbon fuel for the distillation process.

Currently, the Arbikie Highland Estate Distillery operates a sustainable, field-to-bottle model, with all ingredients grown, distilled, matured and bottled onsite. Even the mountain-filtered water used in Arbikie spirits is taken from an underground lagoon.

The project will enhance these credentials, helping to create a low-carbon distillery that has been converted from fossil fuel dependence. It is hoped that this will become a model that can be rolled out across the distillation sector and other industries.

Andy Lyle, CEO of Locogen, said: “It’s great to see one of Scotland’s most traditional industries adopting innovative new technologies to help us reach our net-zero targets. Now there’s another reason to raise a glass on World Whisky Day.

Bill Ireland, CEO of Logan Energy, said: “Scotland’s whisky sector is world-renowned, and it is fitting that we are finding innovative ways to decarbonise this industry as we continue to trailblaze hydrogen technologies with a global impact. I look forward to sampling the new generation of hydrogen-powered whisky.”

Iain Stirling, Director at Arbikie Distillery, said: “Arbikie is focused on becoming one of the world’s most sustainable distilleries, and as both farmers and distillers we are in an ideal position to grow & distil our field-to-bottle whiskies. Sustainable products are undoubtedly the future, especially in this year of the UN’s COP26 and they will be the major economic driving force in the years to come across the world. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful environment on Scotland’s east coast from which we can grow and distil the highest quality of barley and rye, and we’re proud to play a part at the vanguard of what is becoming a global sustainable spirits movement”.

K&L Exclusive Back In Stock: Michel Couvreur’s Inimitable Peated Malt Whisky – Whisky News

K&L Exclusive Sherry-Aged Whisky: Michel Couvreur’s “Peaty Overaged”
Michel Couvreur “Peaty Overaged” K&L Exclusive Malt Whisky (750ml) ($79.99)
“…one of the most authentic and absolutely delicious malts on the market…This new batch of Couvreur is better than ever!” — David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

In their constant search for the world’s most unique and compelling spirits, our buying team routinely discovers truly stupendous offerings exclusive to K&L. One of our favorites over the years has been the Michel Couvreur “Peaty Overaged.” What’s truly remarkable is where this inimitable dram comes from—a deep, dark cellar in the heart of Burgundy. The late Michel Couvreur arrived here in the 1960s and set about acquiring impressive stocks of new-make single malt Scotch and cultivating one of the most well-sourced sherry-cask regimens in the whisky world. Now produced by his long-time apprentice, this peated K&L Exclusive is, as spirits buyer David Othenin-Girard describes, a “wildly high-quality…whisky with a French sensibility.” For any lover of incredibly expressive sherry cask whisky, this is a must-try bottling that will leave you stunned, thrilled, and totally addicted to the style that is none other than Michel Couvreur.

Michel Couvreur “Peaty Overaged” K&L Exclusive Malt Whisky (750ml) ($79.99)

The chance to work with Michel Couvreur on a special K&L whisky project was something that we had been dreaming of for years. We had heard the stories. This innovative Belgian had moved to Burgundy in the ’60s, carved out a wine cellar inside a mountain, only to fill it with Scottish single malt whisky instead of Pinot Noir. He set up camp in Beaune, ordered new-make spirit to be delivered by tanker, and drove down to Jerez himself, selecting his own sherry butts to ensure the finest quality casks for his contracted spirit. Unfortunately, Michel Couvreur passed away in 2013 from pancreatic cancer, thus ending the career of one of the industry’s most courageous pioneers. Luckily for us, however, apprentice Jean-Arnaud has carried on after studying under Michel for more than a decade. When we visited the underground cave, we were all in total awe. The tunnels of dripping stone go on forever, and the amount of whisky stored in this secret lair is jawdropping. We put our trust completely in Jean-Arnaud and are happy we did. Our peated version of the incredible sherry expression is a seamless creation that drinks like the best version of Johnnie Black ever, mixed with the most supple and soft expressions of Macallan. It’s a lush, unfiltered, creamy, caramel-laden dream of a whisky composed only of malts 12 years and older. There’s a bit of peat on the finish, but the soft sherry is the star. (NOTE: do NOT cut the hard wax seal—use a wine opener to go through it)

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 13, 2021

The magnificence that is Michel Couvreur has always been clear, but it wasn’t until we stepped into the special cave carved out of the rock in Bouze-lès-Beaune that we could fully appreciate the incredible endeavor in process at this fine producer. While this is by definition NOT scotch, because it is aged outside of the country, the old school practices utilized at here are unusual back in Scotland. The fact that these guys literally drive to Jerez to pick out fresh sherry casks (from Equipos Navazos no less) is totally unique in modern times. In fact, no producer of malt whisky is getting access to fresher barrels than these guys. Not being able to use the famous moniker does not preclude this from being one of the most authentic and absolutely delicious malts on the market. Stupendous depth and complexity even at 86 proof, and while the sherry is toned down from the standard version, a subtle fino/amontillado quality exists in the back ground. This is pointed by a fabulous smokey sweetness, which hints at the source whisky. Maybe an island somewhere, maybe a drop of Islay, wildly high-quality Highland whisky with a French sensibility. A truly unique gem. This new batch of Couvreur is better than ever! They seem to have slightly upped the peaty element and it’s a welcome addition. They won’t tell us where it’s from, but it’s starting to feel very Caol Ila to me. Also, they’ve adjusted the wax seal which is not soft and can be opened directly via corkscrew. No need to break the wax in advance these days.

NEW “NAKED MALT” IDENTITY AND PACKAGING REVEALED – Scotch Whisky News

NEW “NAKED MALT” IDENTITY AND PACKAGING REVEALED

Blended malt credentials boosted by fresh identity & packaging, showcasing ‘Naked’ first-fill sherry casks to appeal to a new generation of whisky drinkers

Ultra-premium spirits company, Edrington, is re-presenting its Naked brand with a new identity. Embracing its independent spirit and honouring the liquid by placing a first-fill sherry cask centre stage on the bottle, the brand will also evolve to Naked Malt to reinforce its quality credentials and reflect the blend of some of Scotland’s finest single malts.

The launch of Naked Malt, formerly Naked Grouse, will see no change to the award-winning liquid. However, the brand is revealing a new, contemporary design and 100% recyclable packaging. The bottle – which remains transparent to showcase the liquid – will now be embossed with a stunning “Naked” first-fill sherry cask, a homage to the unique process and the delicious flavour it embodies. Each bottle will also carry a signature from Naked Malt Master Blender, Diane Stuart, to acknowledge the meticulous blending, care & craftsmanship that goes into every specially selected cask.

Comprised of world-renowned single malts, Naked Malt’s exceptional flavour is enhanced when the unique blend is extra-matured in first-fill (or naked) Oloroso sherry casks for at least six months. As they’ve never held whisky before, this imparts the best flavour and cask character to create a distinctive taste that is rich and fruity yet versatile for any preferred serve. The brand wants to inspire a new generation of whisky drinkers to celebrate the freedom to drink whisky their way, and ultimately Live Naked, free from traditional constraints.

The finished Naked Malt blend features hints of buttery toffee and sweet spice on the nose, notes of vanilla, stewed fruit and raisins on the palate with a rich and sherried spice finish, creating a contemporary spirit that gives consumers the freedom to enjoy their way – whether that be neat, on the rocks or as part of a cocktail. The brand’s signature serve is a simple Naked Sour which reflects the versatility of the liquid.

The first Naked Malt bottles will be available from June 2021.

Elaine Miller, Global Brand Controller at Naked Malt, said: “For our consumers, the whisky category can be difficult to navigate and bound with conventions they don’t want to be constrained by, so for us, it’s about making whisky more accessible. We want to give a new generation the freedom to try whisky their way, whilst providing the reassurance of a great quality, versatile liquid.

“The new bottle design reinforces our ‘Naked’ cask story, and our ‘Naked’ bottle itself is stripped back because we want to liberate the whisky and let the quality shine through. We also took this opportunity to ensure that all packaging components are 100% recyclable, a key consideration for our consumers.”

Diane Stuart, Naked Malt Master Blender, added: “Naked Malt is blended using some of the finest Scottish single malts, each selected for its quality and individual flavour. Every cask of Single Malt Scotch whisky selected for our blend is nosed to ensure it meets our exacting standard.

“By extra maturing Naked Malt in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, we deliver quality and intensity of flavour enviable in the contemporary whisky category. We create the perfect balance of sweet, fruity character from the American oak with the rich, dried fruit and spicy notes from the European oak to produce Naked Malts signature flavour. But what matters most is that you enjoy it whichever way you like.”

Naked Malt is available in 70cl at 40% ABV

In the US & S Africa its available in 75cl at 43% ABV

Since 2017, Naked Malt has become the fastest growing contemporary whisky* with consecutive years of double-digit growth and is currently distributed in 74 markets globally. It has a strong ambition to double the brand by 2025. (*IWSR 2020)

About Naked Malt

Naked Malt is a blended malt whisky produced in Scotland by ultra-premium spirits company Edrington.  It initially launched as a blended Scotch under the name Naked Grouse in 2011 before relaunching as a blended malt in 2017, in line with the increasing popularity of contemporary whiskies. In 2021, a new brand name of Naked Malt was revealed to cement the brand’s place as the drink of independent and freedom-seeking consumers with a revised bottle design including a portrait of the first-fill casks against a sleek, modern glass bottle.

The 40% abv liquid comes in a 700ml bottle and is comprised of a selection of Scotland’s finest single malts, including The Macallan, Highland Park and Glenrothes. The blended malt is matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry oak casks and it is from these “naked” casks that have never held whisky before that Naked Malt takes its name and its distinctive flavour. The ageing process, along with the blend of single malts, results in a rich and fruity whisky with a soft spice finish.

Diane Stuart, Master Blender, tasting notes:

  • Nose: Buttery toffee, apples, sweet spice
  • Taste: Vanilla custard, stewed fruit, raisins and sultanas
  • Finish: Rich sherried spice

Shelter Point Distillery Update – Canadian Whisky News

Greetings Shelter Point Community

It’s officially Fawning Season in this neck of the woods, and Shelter Point Farm is teeming with new life, which includes our local Black-Tailed Deer population giving rise to a new generation. We’ve also had our first Black Bear sighting of the season at Shelter Point, always another sign of Spring in full bloom.

On the distillery front: You may have seen a post we put out on social media last week, explaining why you may notice a slightly different bottle design for our Shelter Point Whiskies popping up here and there in the near future. For those who missed it, due to an indefinitely delayed shipment of our classic Shelter Point Whisky bottles, we’ve had to make a temporary switch. These new bottles are quite similar in shape and style, but they don’t fit with our trademark glass stoppers. We’ve switched to wood-topped corks for now (the same as you’ll see on our Gin bottles), and we feel like it’s still a good look. Opinions are always appreciated however, and we’ve received a mountain of feedback on both sides. Whether you like the old style, or appreciate the new look, the consensus amongst everyone is that, “It’s the liquid inside that counts” and we couldn’t agree more!

On the tastings and tour side of things here at the Distillery: We are still closed to the public, however we have increased our volume of Virtual Tastings to accommodate the increased demand. Their are currently 2 different options for Virtual Tastings. The first being a whisky exclusive option which will include five 50ml samples of our award winning whiskies and the second being a spirit tasting which will include five 50ml samples of our spirits, Whisky and Liqueur. Both tastings kits will be delivered to your door and ready to sample along with a group of friends & new acquaintances, and are hosted by members of the Shelter Point team, including Distiller Leon Webb, Distillery Manager Jacob Wiebe, Distillery Spirit Guide Brian Ingle and Distillery Spirit Scribe Pat Dunlop. For more information and for booking, please visit https://shelterpoint.ca/distillery-tour-booking/

Cheers and stay tuned to our newsletter for further updates and announcements regarding events, new releases and more fun goings on here at Shelter Point!
