Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 612: Boann Single Pot Still Madeira Cask

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries a new Irish whiskey. The Boann distillery was founded in 2015 by the Cooney family in Drogheda, about 40km north of Dublin. The distillery was built in 2017, but distilling could only begin in 2019. We mainly know them from the whiskey brand The Whistler, for which they brought sourced whiskey to the market while waiting for their own distillate, but in 2024 the moment finally arrived: Boann whiskey had reached the legal age to be bottled. In the glass is their Single Pot Still, which matured in a Madeira cask.

Talisker 47YO Magma Release

THE REVIEW

New American oak charred with hot basalt rocks? Yes, you heard that right. A throwback to the Isle of Skye’s rugged past, forged and moulded by thousands of years of volcanic activity.

Here we have a nearly five decade old Talisker that spent most of its life in refil American oak hogsheads, before a four month finish in these unusually charred fresh American oak casks. Talisker has done this before with a Special Release bottle, albeit, not as old.

This was another incredible opportunity to try such an old product, but does the flavour balance out the massive price tag?

THE REVEIW

A one of one release made just for a massive charity auction, and somehow a sample of it has ended up at my little office in Salford. Matured for forty-six years and bottled at 57.8% ABV, this Port Ellen’s stocks were initially matured in refill hogsheads for a majority of its life, before being married together in a refill American oak puncheon for the final decade of its maturation. This is an insane opportunity and does the whisky deliver as much as it’s $500,000 price tag warrants? Well, you’ll have to watched the video to find that out.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 611: Glenmorangie x Harrison Ford

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, sips with Indiana Jones… sort of. In 2025, Glenmorangie made quite a splash when it teamed up with Hollywood legend Harrison Ford for a series of advertising films. Not only were they very funny and well made, but – as became clear in May 2026 – they also served as the lead-up to an exclusive Glenmorangie x Harrison Ford release. It is a malt matured in both bourbon casks and toasted Portuguese red wine casks.
