Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 550: Numero Dertien PX versus Virgin Oak – Dutch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 550: Numero Dertien PX versus Virgin Oak

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries two very young, Dutch whisky expressions. What if a father, son, and son-in-law acquire an iStill and have their own farm? That’s right, they start making whisky. Together with his son Arend Jr. and son-in-law Jaap, Arend van Nieuwland, born in Breda, gets to work on farm De Wieke in Veendam, where they make whisky using their own home-grown barley – once malted – with an iStill. Last summer, the first two expressions were released under the label ‘Numero Dertien,’ the name of the farm. The whisky is, of course, young – specifically 3 years old – and matured in a PX cask and a Virgin Oak cask. Mark puts them head-to-head.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Wolves American Single Malt – American Whiskey News

https://youtu.be/KpN5beC2kP8

Wolves 5 Year Old American Single Malt, 48%

I must apologise to the folks over at Wolves whiskey. They sent me this bottle, all the way from California and I’m only just getting around to reviewing it.

In a way, the wait was a good thing. The USA have just passed a GI for the definition of American Single Malt Whiskies, and having read through that whisky sipping on this felt like I was at the start of something quite special.

This five year old single malt is matured in Arizona inside of Californian red wine casks. Once a batch has been selected from these casks, it is then finished in ex-Cognac casks for a final fruity flourish.

The liquid is distilled and bottled by San Tan Spirits in Arizona exclusively for Wolves Whiskey.

I’m really liking the flavour profile of this stuff. Despite the maturation in desert heard as well as wine and Cognac casks, you still get some liveliness from the spirit. That aside, it’s drenched in apple, honey, biscuits and a little milk chocolate.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Ardnamurchan Adelphi 10YO- Scotch Whisky News

Ardnamurchan Adelphi 10YO, 56.8%

https://youtu.be/K7nk37Tourg

Finally, my review of this fan boy unicorn bottle! I’ve been chasing this since Edinburgh 2024, and I finally got my hands on it in September. But, with the way things have gone, it’s taken a while to get around to reviewing it. Oddly enough, this is one of the rare whiskies that I’m enjoying with water, but we’ll cover those notes further down.

Having followed Ardnamurchan since that first ever bottle release, they’ve won my heart. This first ever 10 Year Old bottling was quite an achievement for them, and I couldn’t be prouder to own one.

Flavour wise, this bottle is heavy with salt, caramel, brioche, yeasty esters, and a little tropical hint of pineapple and coconut. The salt does dominate the taste, but with water, you get more of those heavy caramel and biscuit flavours.

This is a true delight, and I couldn’t be happier to have it in my collection. Cheers!

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 549: Auchentoshan 14 Year Old Sherry Cask Taiwan Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 549: Auchentoshan 14 Year Old Sherry Cask Taiwan Exclusive

Last summer, Mark suddenly saw a post on social media about this 14-year-old Auchentoshan being bottled exclusively for Taiwan. Fortunately, he has quite a few friends who travel frequently and it was only a matter of asking the question on Facebook before someone – in this case his friend Lars who divides his life between Germany and Hong Kong – made it clear to him that he could easily get hold of this, take the bottle to Germany and ship it from there. Mark begged him on his bare knees (sorta) to score two; one for the collection, one to open. And so he did… Strangely, it says ‘Aged 14 Years – Sherry Cask – Sweet & Rich’ on the label, even though the small print indicates that it is a vatting of bourbon and sherry casks. Oh, well.
