Whisky Wednesday Reviews Dalry Milk 16YO Single Grain – Scotch Whisky News

Dalry Milk 16YO Single Grain, 45.4%

https://youtu.be/_6d2kO3iUEg

Welcome to this rather fun and litigious bottle from the folks over at Master of Malt.

As soon as I saw this go live on their site, it seemed silly not to grab it. Purely for the sake of the label. As you’d imagine, the liquid inside is also pretty tasty stuff.

A single grain from the North British Distillery that is vatted in a 2:1 format of Oloroso sherry to Paolo Cortado sherry casks at a rather prominent 16 years old. Chocolate companies aside, the label itself is a reference to the Gorgie-Dalry area of Edinburgh, which has been home to the sites and smells emitted from the North British Distillery over the last few decades. Sadly, in 2009, the distillery was forced to install an odour control tower to help eliminate the smells of yeast, barley, and all of the other fermented wonders from any distillery.

History aside, I think this style of flavour and the packaging that comes along with it should be one of the ways we help showcase what grain whisky is and what it can be for the consumer. There’s so much talk of the whisky loch of single malt whisky, when in reality, we’re sat on tens of millions of litres of grain whisky. Yes, it’s needed in regards to blended whiskies, but it is also rather tasty on its own.

Putting batches together in flavour profiles like this without having to make something into a liqueur is a brilliant way to show this stuff off to wider consumers. Anyway, this was good fun and a great bargain at £40 a bottle. Well done to Master of Malt and the team who helped select this and get it to the public.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 557 – Strathearn Inaugural Release – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 557: Strathearn Inaugural Bottling

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the Strathearn Inaugural Bottling. ‘Well… I have some trouble with ‘Inaugural Bottling,’ Mark explains, ‘since Strathearn has actually been around for a few years. I even tasted some of their whiskey in 2018 and 2019.’ But in October 2019, Douglas Laing announced that they had taken over the operation. They then worked on the inventory and released a ‘new’ first release under their ownership, so to speak. This new official first release is a vatting of bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak casks. ‘Can I say that I find 85 EUR a bit on the expensive side? But who knows, it might be absolutely delightful. The packaging is certainly eye-catching’ he concludes.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Jack Daniel’s 10YO Batch 4 – American Whiskey News

https://youtu.be/_73qKy0uMO4

Jack Daniel’s with an age statement… not something as new as you would’ve imagined.

This style is not a replica as such, but a reimagination of stocks that would have been released over a century ago, under the guidance of the original master distiller, Jack Daniel’s. Now, under the helm of Chris Fletcher, we have a selection of barrels that have been carefully monitored and moved throughout a few different warehouses across Jack Daniel’s estate.

This is the same mash-bill as the much loved Old NO. 7 – with 80% corn, 12% rye, and 8% malted barley. Bottled at a rather tasty 48.5% ABV for those of us wanting as big and manageable flavour that can still deliver without the need to be cask strength.

This was brilliant! The first time I tried, it was rushed, and I just didn’t think much of it. With time in a glass and under calmer conditions, this is an absolute delight of a bottle. It is rich, heavy, layered, oak driven just enough to be flavourful, and backed up by a wonderfully adventurous contrast between the nose, palate, and finish.

If you’re into older, more premium American whiskies, then I wouldn’t overlook this in any way. It is one of the bottles of the year for me.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Jameson’s Triple Triple Malaga Cask – Irish Whiskey News

Jameson’s Triple Triple Malaga Cask

THE REVIEW

Duty Free has never been a place I’ve enjoyed spending time. Maybe I choose the wrong airports to fly to and from, overall though a rather disappointing experience. Meanwhile, over in Copenhagen airport, they’ve got some absolute wonders.

This was on offer, granted, but it set me back just under £30 a bottle for a product I already enjoy, with a pleasant twist, and it comes in a litre! I think that’s a little silly, but take what you can get.

Regular Jameson’s is typically matured in majority ex-bourbon casks, with a tiny amount of ex-sherry casks in the blend, too. This Triple Triple release, which I believe is one of three releases, is matured additionally in some ex-Malaga wine casks. This is already something that is present in the Yellow Spot release from Midleton, so they know what they’re doing with these barrels.

I like how uncomplicated this liquid is. It’s regular Jameson’s with a twist of something slightly richer and fruitier. It’s honestly delightful, and it’s something that I’m happy to have in the house.
