Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 560: Kilchoman 100% Islay – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 560: Kilchoman 100% Islay

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the 14th Edition already of the Kilchoman 100% Islay. Unlike the other releases of this Ileach, their 100% Islay is a whisky made exclusively from home-grown and peated barley, in this case Publican with 20ppm. And its popularity is proven by the fact that it has been on the market for so long. This is already the 14th edition. The whisky is 9 years old and matured in a combination of bourbon (90%) and Oloroso sherry casks (10%).

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 559: Bowmore 12 Year Old – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 559: Bowmore 12 Year Old

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries an Islay malt. It is fair to say that the Bowmore 12 Year Old is one of the distillery’s entry-level malts. This also means that the bottle is very affordable, something that cannot be said for all entry-level malts.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Macaloney’s Washington Peat Project – Canadian Whisky News

Macaloney’s Washington Peat Project

This might be the most intense way to introduce myself to a new brand of whisky, especially Canadian whisky!

Macaloney’s distillery has been in headlines for all of the right reasons over the past decade or so. From going toe to toe with The Scotch Whisky Association or producing domestic whiskies of numerous styles to the worlds plaudits.

Graeme Macaloney shares both Scottish and Irish heritage. It’s one of the reasons he likes to produce unpeated and peated single malt whiskies in a classic Scottish style, as well triple distilled, pot still whiskies. He and his team can produce anything you want. This ‘Peat Project’ single cask series is quite an interesting selection of peated styles. I can attest to the rest of the series, but this bottling has sourced peat from Washington state, just south of the US-Canadian border. It’s also been matured in an ex-Portuguese red wine barrique to add an additional element of fun.

You’ll have to watch the video to find out my full feelings for this very new style of sourced peat, but it certainly gets people talking. Peated whisky drinkers, we’ve tried and seen it all. So, for this to have some additional pull in the whisky industry is a very interesting point of international sales. Yes, these bottles are single cask release, but they’re remarkably interesting to those of us who enjoy things a little smokier.

Canadian whiskies across the board are in quite good demand across the UK. I wish we had some sort of international deal with Canada to source more of their regular and more interesting stocks, as this would go down a storm on this side of the Atlantic. Naturally, they’re probably well received in Canada and the US, as well as wherever else they’re sold. Let’s get more of this stuff in the UK!

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 558: Craigellachie 9 Year Old Dram4Charity – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 558: Craigellachie 9 Year Old Dram4Charity

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, enjoys a whisky released for charity. Dram4Charity, a collective of whisky-loving philanthropists, is launching a series of whiskies this year with all proceeds again being donated to the ALS Fund of Alain Verspecht. The series is named ‘Frames of Freedom’ and the labels are designed by Alain. Last month, we were already delighted with an excellent 8-year-old Caol Ila. This time, we head to the heart of Speyside, where our friends have selected a 9-year-old Craigellachie.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Dalry Milk 16YO Single Grain – Scotch Whisky News

Dalry Milk 16YO Single Grain, 45.4%

https://youtu.be/_6d2kO3iUEg

Welcome to this rather fun and litigious bottle from the folks over at Master of Malt.

As soon as I saw this go live on their site, it seemed silly not to grab it. Purely for the sake of the label. As you’d imagine, the liquid inside is also pretty tasty stuff.

A single grain from the North British Distillery that is vatted in a 2:1 format of Oloroso sherry to Paolo Cortado sherry casks at a rather prominent 16 years old. Chocolate companies aside, the label itself is a reference to the Gorgie-Dalry area of Edinburgh, which has been home to the sites and smells emitted from the North British Distillery over the last few decades. Sadly, in 2009, the distillery was forced to install an odour control tower to help eliminate the smells of yeast, barley, and all of the other fermented wonders from any distillery.

History aside, I think this style of flavour and the packaging that comes along with it should be one of the ways we help showcase what grain whisky is and what it can be for the consumer. There’s so much talk of the whisky loch of single malt whisky, when in reality, we’re sat on tens of millions of litres of grain whisky. Yes, it’s needed in regards to blended whiskies, but it is also rather tasty on its own.

Putting batches together in flavour profiles like this without having to make something into a liqueur is a brilliant way to show this stuff off to wider consumers. Anyway, this was good fun and a great bargain at £40 a bottle. Well done to Master of Malt and the team who helped select this and get it to the public.
