Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 347: Mortlach 14 Year Old Alexander’s Way

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the Beast of Dufftown. Originally the 14 years old Alexander’s Way – which refers to the fiendishly complicated process of 2.81x distilled that creates that typical umami spirit that Mortlach is known for – was only available as a travel retail expression, but today you can find it quite easily.

It isn’t difficult to gauge quality in whisky. What is difficult is understanding how something can be so good. A whisky that unifies all corners of Scottish whisky production. A whisky that is affordable. A whisky that is regularly available. A bottle of liquid that is so on point to what a community wants, it walks through the front door and makes itself at home in the wealth of nostalgia and memories that all good whisky should be associated with. Kilkerran nailed it; no surprise, really.

It’s All About Springbank on this weeks episode of the show. Amongst the bottlings I’ll be tasting this weeks is a pair of 10 year olds, one from 2005 and one from 2020. I’ll also be tasting the IAAS Facebook group’s bottling.

Billy Walker. King Midas himself, except everything he touches turns into raw sherried wonderment!  The 12YO Glenallachie is combination of ex-bourbon oak, virgin oak and Oloroso Sherry – beautiful! Truly beautiful! The darkest batch of this 12YO I’ve seen, a proud purchase and something that will be bought again without a second thought.
