Welcome to this weeks episode of the show in which I’ll be looking at a selection of bottlings that retail for under £50. Are they good value for money?
Created in 1923 by Berry Bros and Rudd, its spiritual home is regarded as The Glenrothes distillery, but times have changed and it is now owned by La Martiniquaise, owners of Glen Moray.
Now i first saw this whisky in Goodfellas – “Cutty and water!” Or it being wheeled straight in and out of the club when they’re flogging all the stock. More recently it features in Green Book, too. A favourite of the Doctor.
Obviously named after the famous ship which got its name from The Tam O’Shanter poem by Robert Burns, this thing literally drips history. It is designed to be mixed, but i do enjoy it neat. Head to their website and you’ll see a host of cocktail and recipes for your at home fun!
Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 377: Torabhaig 2017 The Legacy Series – Inaugural Release
Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the newest malt from Skye. The first official release from the Torabhaig distillery, founded in 2017, sold out in a flash. This despite the fact that, like many other inaugural releases we’ve seen in recent months, it is very young liquid, only just legally able to call itself whisky. But then again, we’ve also seen that this is not necessarily a problem. The only problem Torabhaig might suffer from is the fact that it will not escape the comparison with Talisker. ‘Let’s not fall into that trap and just judge the whisky on its own merits, what do you say?’ Mark muses.
Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 376: Miltonduff 13 Year Old 2007 Old Particular for Prima Vinum
Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries a teenage Miltonduff. Prima Vinum, a Belgian whisky shop, selected a sherry butt that was put to sleep in 2007 at Douglas Laing, containing spirit from the lesser known Miltonduff distillery. They had it bottled last August exclusively for their shop.
Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 375: Secret Speyside 26 Year Old 1994 The Barrel Baron
Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the inaugural release from the Barrel Baron. One of his whisky buddies from Holland, Marcel Kip, has released his first bottling. He certainly made an entrance with this one. Mark had the good fortune to taste this beforehand and was happy that he was able to secure two bottles of this beautiful dram.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 374: Aberlour a’bunadh Batch 66
Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries another Aberlour a’bunadh. Mark has tried quite a few a’bunadh in his day, batch 60 only last November, but recently got a bottle of batch 66. The buyer was not very fond of it and asked Mark to take it off his hands. He did so gladly, so here we are with this sherry monster that will brighten up his day.
Matthew Gloag created The Grouse in 1896, renamed The Famous Grouse in 1905. Classicslly, Famous Grouse would contain Macallan and Highland Park. But Smoky Black uses an in-house peated malt produced by Glenturret once a year called Ruddy Mhor.
Edrington don’t own Glenturret anymore, it’s now in Lalique’s hands. But they still own the Famous Grouse brand. So even though it contains peated Glenturret, other whiskies within the Edrington umbrella could be within it: Bowmore, Highland Park, Macallan? Glen Garioch.
2,000,000 cases annually and Royal Warrant in 1984 have allowed the brand to become one of the best selling, and most well known in Scotch whisky.
