Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 375: Secret Speyside 26 Year Old 1994 The Barrel Baron

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the inaugural release from the Barrel Baron. One of his whisky buddies from Holland, Marcel Kip, has released his first bottling. He certainly made an entrance with this one. Mark had the good fortune to taste this beforehand and was happy that he was able to secure two bottles of this beautiful dram.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Famous Grouse: Smoky Black – Scotch Whisky News

Matthew Gloag created The Grouse in 1896, renamed The Famous Grouse in 1905. Classicslly, Famous Grouse would contain Macallan and Highland Park. But Smoky Black uses an in-house peated malt produced by Glenturret once a year called Ruddy Mhor.

Edrington don’t own Glenturret anymore, it’s now in Lalique’s hands. But they still own the Famous Grouse brand. So even though it contains peated Glenturret, other whiskies within the Edrington umbrella could be within it: Bowmore, Highland Park, Macallan? Glen Garioch.

2,000,000 cases annually and Royal Warrant in 1984 have allowed the brand to become one of the best selling, and most well known in Scotch whisky.

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, keeps walking. One of the special releases Johnnie Walker launched in honor of the 200th anniversary of the company in 2020 was this Celebratory Blend, inspired by the original Old Highland Whisky. And guess what? It’s outstanding.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 372: Kilchoman 13 Year Old 2007 Private Cask for Max & Julia

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries a Kilchoman private cask release. There are only a few of these private casks that have reached the age of 13 years. This bourbon barrel was bottled for Max & Julia. Mark ordered four bottles immediately because he knows the person who owned the cask and is convinced that the latter knows a thing or two about whisky (that’s a gracious understatement, Mark adds). ‘And I was not wrong. It’s not good. It’s not even great. It’s outstanding!’
