Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 580: Ardnahoe 5 Year Old Inaugural Release

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries an inaugural release from Islay. In the glass is the long-awaited first release from the youngest distillery on Islay: Ardnahoe. They certainly took their time, as they decided to bottle their first creation only after it had matured for five years (on a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks). The bottle itself looks very good too. After all, aesthetics matter. But the most important thing is, of course, what’s in the glass (and this might be even more applicable to an Islay whisky than any other, given the island’s cult status and its smoky whiskies).

In order we have the 40YO Blend with an Islay Quarter Cask finish, Lagmore 10YO Single Estate Blended Malt, Glenrothes 17YO Oloroso Single Malt, Torabhaig 7YO First Fill Bourbon, and finally, the Williamson 13YO Islay Blended Malt.

A truly incredible selection of whiskies that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a delicate and old summary of what Scottish whisky is all about, a extremely well sherried single malt, or something that is young, smoky and very complex, there is something here to cater to everyone’s taste, and in a way that still offers remarkable quality for the whisky drinker.

ralfy review 1101 – Scapa NAS @48%vol: (Distillery Exclusive)

THE VIDEO

One of the dirtiest tasting whiskies I’ve ever come across. A single malt that is heavy with miso, soy, salt, maple, pecan, apricots and all of the Christmas spices that we expect to pop through at this time of year.

Not only does it have massive complexity, intrigue, and a unique approach to capturing this special style of distillate, it’s also extremely sought after. Making the demand for this whisky up there with Springbank and other small batch release products. Does that make this years release feel a little flat compared to last years, or even the previous one?

I do feel a little underwhelmed by this years release, it’s not that it’s bad, far from it – but it’s the pedestal we can put hard to find whiskies on the first time we try them.

There’s no doubt that this is an excellent single malt with a score that I’ll always stand by, but I think we’re all getting tired of the ‘hard to find’ factor now. Even if this one is genuinely small, genuinely deserving of its praise and is genuinely tasty – I think we’re all just a little tired.
