The Glenrothes Ultimate Gentleman’s Cocktail Contest

The Glenrothes is hosting The Ultimate Gentleman’s Cocktail Contest in The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh on Monday the 30th of November, starting at 6.30pm (until late), and would be most delighted if you could don your flat caps and finest tweed in joining them for an evening of entertainment.

Hosted by The Glenrothes’ own mixologist Andy Gemmell, the competition will bring together 14 of Scotland’s finest bartenders and showcase their skills in designing, preparing and creating a top class tipple.

Using The Glenrothes Select Reserve, these specially selected chaps and chappettes will go head to head in creating a cocktail that encompasses everything that a gentleman would want from a beverage with finesse.

The judging panel will comprise some well known names within the drinks industry including Ronnie Cox, the Global Brand Ambassador for The Glenrothes and Simon Difford, editor of CLASS Magazine. There are also two special guests on the panel who will not be revealed until the evening of the event.

The stakes are high as there is a lot to play for – the creator of the winning cocktail will win a VIP trip to The Glenrothes Distillery in Speyside, a bottle of The Glenrothes Vintage 1991 and an array of cocktail making goodies. The two runners up will also be invited to stay at The Genrothes Distillery.

The Voodoo Rooms will be running special deals on The Glenrothes cocktails so why don’t you pop along for an alternative Monday night and enjoy one.

The Glenrothes, introduced in 2005 is a popular tipple amongst whisky connoisseurs. The Select Reserve is a versatile yet unique malt laced with notes of ripe fruits, juicy citrus, creamy vanilla and hints of spice – making it the perfect liquid to partner with cocktails.

On the evening, contestants will be given three minutes to create a cocktail which contains at least 30ml of The Glenrothes and a maximum of six other ingredients. They will be marked on name, balance, simplicity, taste, originality, presentation, delivery and performance.

If you think you have what it takes to partake in this unique cocktail competition, please contact Andy Gemmell at andy.gemmell@maxxium.com.

The Octave & Quarter Cask Range From Duncan Taylor – Scotch Whisky News

The Octave & Quarter Cask Range  Premium Single Malt, Single Grain and Exclusive Blendings

Duncan Taylor and Co Ltd has experimented for many years in the use of differing cask sizes for the maturation of Single Malt and Single Grain Scotch Whiskies. Our research stemmed from a simple premise that there is more wood interaction with spirit over a shorter period of time in a small cask than in a large cask, therefore allowing a more rapid “melding” of wood, air and alcohol. The resultant spirit demonstrated a depth of maturity missing in a larger cask over a similar period of storage. On completion of a relatively short maturation period of a younger whisky, the spirit appeared smoother, more balanced with plenty of character more reminiscent of a long maturation. The rough edges were removed and the taste profile changed dramatically to what would be considered a whisky of a much more mature nature or vintage. The whisky became polished, bright and sparkled with intensity.

We experimented to see how octave and quarter cask maturation would affect whiskies that had already been matured for long periods in larger casks. The trial was done on existing 2nd or 3rd fill casks using older whiskies that had not quite matured to the level of quality expected by Duncan Taylor. The result was once again astonishing. On re-racking the whiskies, we found that after just a few months the casks had breathed new life into the whisky, quickly changing hue, taste, form and character of the spirit. The whisky was rejuvenated, a little more aggressive, with the commanding presence of a mature well balanced peerless Scotch Whisky.
The results of our maturation tests for both young and old whiskies confirmed our belief that this would interest consumers and that they would try this revolutionary method of what is regarded as technically finishing a whisky, no matter what the age or whisky type.

After many in-house tasting sessions with customers we quickly realised that releasing the definitive Octave and Quarter Cask Range of Single Malt and Single Grain Scotch Whiskies was a given.

You now have the benefit of our exhaustive research to have a unique cask of your own to monitor first hand how your whisky will transform in your chosen cask format, whether it is in octave or quarter casks, ex Bourbon or ex Sherry wood.

Quality Spirit

Duncan Taylor & Company Limited, established in 1938, is renowned for the quality and range of its single malts, single grain and deluxe blended Scotch Whiskies. It has been awarded the IWSC Trophy on two occasions, IWSC Golds, The World Whisky award for Scotch Grain 2010 (note: matured in a Duncan Taylor Quarter Cask) , and is currently Whisky Magazine’s Independent Bottler of the Year 2009. The pedigree is there for all to see.

Octave and Quarter Casks

Our octave and quarter casks have been constructed from ex Sherry casks in Spain and from ex Bourbon casks here in Scotland. The casks are of the highest quality using the finest staves.

The whisky in our Octave and Quarter Cask Range has not been chill-filtered or coloured, it remains in its natural state keeping the flavours and textures unaltered. The spirit is from a single cask, and is kept at cask strength.

As octave and quarter casks are smaller than standard butt or hogshead casks, the opportunity to own a private cask just became more affordable.

With fewer bottles from each cask, the spirit becomes all the more exclusive.

Highland Park – FIRST FLOW OF ORCADIAN VINTAGES FROM THE CREATORS OF THE BEST SPIRIT IN THE WORLD – Scotch Whisky News

FOR RELEASE: November 6th 2009

FIRST FLOW OF ORCADIAN VINTAGES FROM

THE CREATORS OF THE BEST SPIRIT IN THE WORLD

HIGHLAND PARK RELEASES 1964 AND 1968 PREMIUM EDITIONS

Highland Park is launching the eagerly anticipated 1964 and 1968 expressions from the distillery’s new Orcadian Vintage Series in response to the growing international demand for high quality aged single malt whisky.

The success of Highland Park’s recently released 40 year old, the 30 year old before it and the distillery’s impressive climb in exports over the last four years has enabled the award winning distillery to address the growing demand for exclusive bottlings for the premium connoisseur customer.

Over the next five years Highland Park will release up to ten exclusive Vintage limited editions.  Max McFarlane, Highland Park’s acclaimed Whisky Maker will hand-select casks from specific years, based on their maturity and exceptional character; these will then be married together in order to ensure consistency and Highland Park’s inimitable balance.

Jason Craig, Global Controller of Highland Park said: “We have worked tirelessly to take the Vintages from the initial concept to reality and we are exceptionally pleased with the end result. Followers of Highland Park respect and knowingly trust our instinctive nose and tastings and the Vintages certainly meet our high standards.

“We have used the best craftsmanship and time old traditions to create the ’64 and the ’68 and feel very excited at being able to offer discerning whisky lovers from all over the world a very exclusive Highland Park tasting experience. Buyers will recognise our all-pervading obsession with quality and attention to detail; distinct aromas balanced with a full-bodied floral sweetness that comes from a long-term maturation that is distinct to Highland Park.”

The 1964 Vintage is the oldest within the Vintages Series and due to the rarity of the liquid, only 290 bottles of this finest limited edition premium single malt will be made available.  The liquid has been created from only two hogshead oak casks specifically chosen by Max McFarlane and when combined will create the 290 bottles at 42.2% abv (alcohol by volume) with a retail price of £3750.

According to Max McFarlane; “The refill hogshead casks have allowed the delicate fragrance of the original spirit to shine through without being overpowered by the oak notes.  This distinct and aromatic fragrance comes from hand-turned malt which has been dried over Orkney’s aromatic heather based peat.  In addition, the peaceful drawn out maturation the whisky has enjoyed in Orkney’s cool climate has resulted in a remarkable, world-class taste – at full strength the 1964 Vintage  is redolent of toasted oak, dried strawberries and shellac with a generous coating of beeswax.  The finish – a rich, long, lingering spiciness completes the sensational tasting experience of this venerable single malt.  Simply put, it’s pleasure in a glass.”

The second release, the 1968, is an equally impressive malt and 1550 bottles will enter the market; both at home and abroad. Eight carefully chosen refill casks make up the exceptional character of the ’68.  With its naturally golden hue colour, full bodied flavour with hints of opaque honey and lemongrass, this Highland Park Orcadian Vintage is an exceptionally fine whisky that builds on the world-class reputation of the internationally acclaimed distillery.

To compliment the exquisite design of these fine liquids a distinct presentation portfolio has been expertly considered.   Drawing on the current style of the Highland Park 40 year old, the Vintage’s debut is revealed in a unique decanter-esque bell-bottomed jet back glass bottle that features flashes of silver foil, embossed Pictish knot work design on necker and banding and the distinct pewter ‘H’ Amulette adorned to the front of the bottle.

The bespoke black glass, the manufacturer of which is an all but defunct art form, reflects the careful artisan precision that has been considered.  The silver cap with Pictish designs completes the look of this exclusive limited edition. Stoelze Flaconnage, acclaimed glass specialist has produced this majestic looking bottle that consumers can keep long after the liquid has been savoured.

The 1964 and 1968 Vintages are presented in a naturally coloured oak wooden box finished to high specification cabinet quality.  The craftsmen have enhanced the boxes with ornate marquetry; the pewter Amulette embedded into the front of the box which also features inlay design work.  Inside collectors will discover a detailed booklet featuring explanatory notes about the Vintages range; from thought to taste.

1964-bottle1

A 45 year old single malt

A strength of c.42.2% abv

Price: £3750

Colour:                        A delightfully rich, russet hue with exemplary clarity and brightness

Nose:               At full strength the 1964 Vintage is redolent of toasted oak, dried strawberries and shellac with a generous coating of beeswax.  When reduced, toasted toffee and smouldering bonfire embers come to the fore, followed by beguiling notes of gingerbread, sandalwood and cinnamon bark.

Palate:             Unreduced, this expression has the delicious sweetness associated with Highland Park but combined with a fascinating spiciness, crushed black pepper, crème brulee and toasted vanilla pod add to the complexity.  The addition of water reintroduces the toasted oak initially encountered on the nose accompanied by distinctive hints of Applewood smoked cheddar, vanilla sponge and paprika.

Finish:             Rich, long, lingering spiciness completes the sensational tasting experience of this venerable single malt.

Detail: Orcadian Vintage Series 1968

1968-bottle1

A 40 year old single malt

A strength of c.45.6% abv

Price: £2250

Colour:            A delightfully rich, naturally golden hue with remarkable clarity and brightness.

Bouquet:          At full strength the 1968 Vintage is reminiscent of thick, opaque honey but with attractive notes of lemongrass, sandalwood and a variety of aromatic spices.  When reduced, citrus fruits and pencil shavings become immediately apparent, followed by sweet aromas of rose and crème caramel.

Palate:             At natural strength, this expression of Highland Park has a delicious complexity, the citrus evident on the nose develops into dried orange peel whereas the pencil shavings transform into toasted oak.  The aromatic spices are revealed as ginger and cloves as well as some camphor.  The judicious addition of water creates a delicious balance between vanilla sweetness and delicate spiciness

Finish:             A lasting impression of rich spiciness is the legacy of a single malt that is extremely long and surprisingly sweet.

Both Vintages will be available in the UK from specialist independent whisky retailers from November 2009.

Highland Park

Five keystones contribute to making the Best Spirit in the World:

·         Aromatic peat gives a delectably seductive, luxuriant floral sweetness to Highland Park single malt Scotch whisky.

·         Cool maturation enhances the smooth character of Highland Park single malt Scotch whisky.

·         Sherry oak casks contribute to the distinctive richness and multi-dimensional complexity of Highland Park single malt Scotch whisky.

·         Cask harmonisation ensures consistency and balance in Highland Park single malt Scotch whisky.

Established in 1798 on Orkney, Highland Park is one of the most remote Scotch whisky distilleries in the world.  For over 210 years, the distillery has combined time old tradition and the very best craftsmanship to achieve perfection.   Its range of 12, 15, 16, 18, 21, 25, 30 and 40 year old single malts is consistently acclaimed by connoisseurs and experts.  Highland Park has won a string of prestigious awards across its portfolio, most recently including ‘best new whisky release of the year 2009’ for its 40-year-old single malt and ‘best whisky in the world 2009’ for its 21-year-old expression in the World Whisky Awards, as well as four double gold awards in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2009.

Q:        How many will be available?

A          290 bottles of The Orcadian Vintage Series 1964

Q:        What makes the presentation so special?

 Q:        Distinguished presentation design elements?

A:         The Orcadian Vintage Series 1964:

Oak was the wood chosen for the outer box, a visual and tactile reference to the ribs of the legendary Viking longships as well as to malt whisky maturation. Debossed into the front of the Oak box is a Highland Park amulette in silver, handcrafted in Orkney by acclaimed jeweller Aurora.

The interior hinged door features an intricate illustration of Viking art and craftsmanship. The original representation of the mythical Great Beast appeared on the metal war vane of a longship. For the 1964 Vintage marquetry, a technique in which the contrast between individual inlays of wood provides the only colour was used.

The vane, from Söderala in Sweden, would have swung from the prow of an eleventh-century Viking ship and depicts, among a dense undergrowth of tendrils, a large dragon-like beast. Around its leg a smaller animal has firmly clamped its jaws.

This is exemplary of the Ringerike style, named after the carved stone slabs of an affluent district of Norway to the north of Oslo, which emerged during the first half of the eleventh century. A narrow section of the same unusual, finely-detailed inlaid design – hinting at the representation within the interior – appears on the back of the box.

The Orcadian Vintage Series 1968

The interior hinged door features an intricate illustration of Viking art and craftsmanship. The original representation of the mythical Sea Dragon is a wood carving at the church of Urnes in western Norway. For the 1968 Vintage marquetry, a technique in which the contrast between individual inlays of wood provides the only colour was used.

The illustration is a combat motif; a dragon-like creature is shown seizing a lesser beast by the neck. They are surrounded by thin ribbons which snake their way through the looping design. The Urnes style was developed shortly before the middle of the eleventh century and is characterized by gracefully curving lines of different widths, sometimes swelling or tapering.

A narrow section of the same unusual, finely-detailed inlaid design – hinting at the representation within the interior – appears on the back of the box.

Q:        Where was the bottle made?

A:         Stölzle Flaconnage, acclaimed glass specialist, was tasked with emphasising the artisanal nature of the Orcadian Vintage Series.

Q:        Where will the Orcadian Vintages Series be sold?

A:         The Orcadian Vintages Series will be sold in specialist whisky retailers globally and online at www.highlandpark.co.uk.

Glenrothes Newsletter – John Ramsay’s Legacy – Scotch Whisky News

Kindred Spirits
November 2009

The Glenrothes: John Ramsay’s Legacy
Dear Lawrence

In July, we announced that, after forty-three years making Scotch Whisky, John Ramsay, who has been involved with the crafting of The Glenrothes Single Malt since the mid 1990s, and whose signature has adorned so many Glenrothes labels over the years, was set to retire.

feature3_1
To mark this, we asked John if he would produce his ‘final’ variant of The Glenrothes: one that he would be happy to sign off on as a farewell. His ‘Legacy’ if you like.

Happily he agreed and now 3 months later we are able to offer to you this exceptional release – The Glenrothes: John Ramsay, available to purchase from the website shop.

feature3_2

In John’s own words he describes how he created this, his last product.

“I called for samples from forty-nine different hand-picked casks and then from this total narrowed the selection to fourteen Hogsheads and six Butts. This volume was still way in excess of what we required but I felt it necessary to go with this wide variety in order to get the correct balance and complexity of flavours.

The casks were all made from American Oak (Quercus Alba): all second-fill sherry casks. They were a mix from the following vintage years: 1973, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1986 and 1987.

The natural colour was dark and golden and the initial married strength 52.6% alcohol by volume. My intention was to take the alcohol strength down prior to bottling as I wanted to deliver a whisky that can be consumed with no additional water to the glass and no alcohol burn. To achieve this I selected some recently emptied American oak sherry casks and vatted the married whisky back into them. Unusually I did this without the addition of water.

The next stage was then to select only two of these ‘racked’ casks: those showing the greatest enhancement and slowly add water over several weeks until the strength reduction and colour clarity measures we were looking for had been met.

The result has been to deliver a whisky, without chill filtering, at a strength of 46.7% abv that still leaves the whisky bright and vibrant to the eye.

Now bottled there are just 1400 bottles of this product each numbered and sold with a booklet that I have signed myself. To honour this product, we have produced a special bottle: still in keeping with the Sample Room bottle shape that has been used since 1994, but with the addition of my signature, etched in the glass. The oak frame has a Glenrothes shaped window.”

John’s tasting notes read:

Appearance: Medium golden, clear and bright
Bouquet: Rich, spicy, blood orange and vanilla
Palate: Rich, full flavour, balanced oak and fruit, mango
Finish: Long, mature and tactile, unmistakably American oak

Enjoy,

Woodford Reserve ® and Esquire to Showcase Nation’s Ultimate Manhattans

Finalist’s creations to be showcased at November 9 event at Esquire Soho

Louisville, Ky. (November 5, 2009) – With the recent resurgence of pre-Prohibition bourbon cocktails, the classic Manhattan is making a comeback across the country. Woodford Reserve bourbon and Esquire magazine have searched the country for the nation’s ultimate well-crafted Manhattans and will feature eight “Masters of the Manhattan” on November 9 during The Manhattan Experience Finals in New York City.

Each bartender showcased their own spin on the historic cocktail at events across the country and will present their own well-crafted Manhattan cocktails at the Woodford Reserve/Esquire Magazine Manhattan Experience. The event takes place in New York City on Monday, November 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Esquire Soho, the magazine’s Ultimate Bachelor Pad. There, the bartenders’ creations will be reviewed by a panel of experts, including Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris, Executive Chef Christopher Lee and Mixologist Julie Reiner.

“We have had some wonderful and creative recipes submitted during our search over the past few months, highlighting the complexity and versatility of Woodford Reserve,” said Laura Petry, Woodford Reserve brand manager. “Along with our partners at Esquire, we look forward to showcasing the cocktail craftsmanship of some of the finest mixologists in the country.”

All eight of the recipes will be featured in a Woodford Reserve advertisement in the January edition of Esquire.

To celebrate the spirit of crafting the ultimate cocktail, Esquire magazine’s resident mixologist David Wondrich has developed the Esquire Manhattan featuring Woodford Reserve. The cocktail recipe is as follows:

UK: Scotch whisky protection measures set to become law – Scotch Whisky News

UK: Scotch whisky protection measures set to become law
6 November 2009 | Source: just-drinks.com editorial team

New legal regulations covering Scotch whisky have been lined up to become law later this month in the UK.

Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy confirmed yesterday (5 November) that the measures, which will include the outlawing of the bottling of single malt outside Scotland, will be passed into law on 23 November.

The regulations include:

The compulsory use of category descriptions, such as ‘Blended Scotch Whisky’;  Presentation rules, which are intended to promote understanding of every category of Scotch whisky, Single and Blended, to consumers;
Additional protection for Scotch from unfair competition and deceptive practices within a legal framework;  Rules to require the bottling of single malt Scotch in Scotland;  Protection for the traditional regional names associated with Scotch whisky production and clear rules on product age statements;  Introduction of an enforcement mechanism, with HM Revenue & Customs designated as the Scotch whisky verification authority;
Use of the word ‘Pure’ is to be banned, as it has led to confusion as ‘Pure Malt’ may come across as being superior – the term has been used to disguise the fact that the product is a blend of malts rather than a single malt;  A tightening up of the use of distillery and regional names.

“It is vital that we protect our key industries,” said Murphy. “We cannot allow others to trade off our good name and to pass off inferior whisky as being produced in Scotland. These regulations will help protect whisky customers across the globe.”

The move has been welcomed by trade body the Scotch Whisky Association. “Additional protection helps safeguard Scotch from unfair and deceptive practices,” said SWA chief executive Gavin Hewitt. “The new labelling rules provide a unique opportunity to promote consumer understanding of Scotch worldwide. These regulations have the strong backing of the Scotch whisky industry.”

Glenfiddich Announces Succession of New Malt Master

Brian Kinsman becomes sixth Malt Master responsible for producing the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky

Toronto, ON (November 5) – Independent, family-owned distiller, William Grant & Sons Ltd. has announced the succession of Brian Kinsman as Glenfiddich’s Malt Master.  He will take up his new post from 1st December 2009.

‘Apprentice’ Malt Master for the past eight years, Brian Kinsman succeeds David Stewart who has held the post for 35 years – the industry’s longest serving Malt Master. Brian becomes only the sixth Malt Master since the company was founded in 1887.

As Malt Master, Brian will be in charge of the time-honoured Glenfiddich whisky making tradition; from careful cask selection and overseeing the marrying process – a Glenfiddich speciality which ensures consistency in the quality – to the maturation process within the Dufftown warehouses, where every new year imparts different qualities to the liquid.

His predecessor, David Stewart, is one of the industry’s most loved and respected craftsmen. Working alongside him for the past nine years, Brian has not only learnt his craft but inherited an unrivalled passion for whisky and a deep respect for time-honoured techniques and tradition.

Brian studied chemistry at The University of St Andrews and first joined William Grant & Sons in 1997 to carry out analysis of spirit quality and study the maturation processes, having been attracted by the tradition, skill and craftsmanship within the worlds most awarded and distinguished distillery. Eight years ago he became David Stewart’s apprentice, embarking on a complex journey of learning about the production of single malt whisky which traditionally can take anything up to a decade to complete.  Although no formal qualification is required to be Malt Master, Brian’s scientific background comes in useful when understanding the character of a whisky and the effect of maturation.

Brian said: “It’s an honour to join the exclusive roll call of Glenfiddich Malt Masters. Not only to be taking on the responsibility for producing the ‘best dram in the valley’, but to be taking over from David, who is the best nose in the business and has been for a long time.  I’ve been lucky enough to have learnt and benefited from David’s knowledge and years of experience in much the same way David did from his predecessor, Hamish Robertson. He learned from Gordon Ross and Gordon from John Grant. John learned from his father, William Grant, our founder.  My apprenticeship may be complete, but you never stop perfecting and exploring new possibilities for the time-honoured techniques that have been passed down – this is a lifetime of work and one I am looking forward to.”

David Stewart, who firmly remains part of the William Grant & Sons family, but will now dedicate his time to his Malt Master role at the company’s renowned Balvenie distillery in Dufftown, said: “I recall when I first took over the reigns as Malt Master in 1974 when I felt a personal responsibility for ensuring a continuity of skills and time-honoured techniques to ensure all our whiskies were as complex and characterful as the last. Having spent a significant period of time with Brian, helping him to refine his Glenfiddich ‘nose’ I am confident that he will take up the mantle with the passion and commitment required to guarantee excellence in all of our award winning single malts.”

William Grant & Sons Ltd:

William Grant & Sons is an independent family-owned distiller founded by William Grant in 1886 and today still controlled by the fifth generation of his family.  The Company distils some of the world’s leading brands of Scotch whisky, including the world’s favourite single malt Glenfiddich®, the handcrafted range of The Balvenie® single malts and one of the world’s best loved blended Scotches, Grant’s®, as well as selected other spirits, including Hendrick’s® Gin, and Sailor Jerry® Spiced Rum

The Malt Messenger from Kensington in Calgary Alberta – Scotch Whisky News

Dear Malt Messenger Subscribers,

The next full Malt Messenger is out early next week. But some news just can’t wait. So in the meantime I thought I’d give you a little taste of what to expect. I’ve kept it short and sweet, enjoy!

Malt Whisky Yearbook 2010 is here! – $30

Whiskey: The Definitive World Guide by the late whisky writer Michael Jackson is here! – $49.99

Springbank 1996 KWM Manzanilla Cask – Do you remember our exceptional cask of Springbank? You know, the one that sold out about a two months ago (600 bottles in 5 months!)? Well, its not quite sold out yet. The distillery held back six cases (36) bottles from the order shipped to us in February, and when we selected our follow up cask (due to land in late November) the existence of these six cases came to light. We requested that they be sent too, and they quietly arrived in store last Wednesday. There are now only 30 bottles left. If you’d like to sample our Springbank 1996 Manzanilla Cask before it truly sells out, don’t delay! Full tasting note and description to be included in the next Malt Messenger! $109.99

Bruichladdich Organic 2003: Following in the wake of the Benromach Organic is Bruichladdich’s crack at organic whisky! My initial thoughts: Nose: light, honeyed malt, very grassy, buttery creamy notes underlie it all with olives and almonds; Palate: surprisingly big mouthfeel given the nose, apple juice, sweet & bitter vanilla oak notes and malted milk; Finish: sweet, more vanillans and licorice root. Available in limited quantities: $77.99 + GST

Bruichladdich Black Art 1989: Aged 19 years in bourbon casks with a wine cask influence, Jim’s not saying much more than that. The whisky was rumoured to be similar in style to the legendary Blacker Still of years back, but that comparison does a disservice to both the Blacker Still and Black Art. People will be talking about this dram not least because of the mystique surrounding its creation, but also because once poured from the black opaque bottle they won’t know what to make of it. I don’t often talk about colour, unless it is exceptional or unusual, and it is both in this case. It looks like a young tawny port or rose wine; I’ve never seen anything like it before in the world of whisky. Nose: like a nice young tawny port with a balance of caramel and fruit, caramelized, grapey, dark orchard fruits, fruit syrup, fresh cherries and much more going on; Palate: very grapey, lots of wine notes, some soft tannins, very earthy, strawberry, more dark orchard fruits, cooked plum, toffee cake with a blueberry sauce; Finish: very drying, lots of oak tannins and traces of fruit syrup! This is the kind of dram which people will either love or hate. I think it’s both interesting and fun… Available in limited quantities. – $132.99

Also just in this week:

1.       Duthies Cragganmore 15Yr – 94.99

2.       Kilchoman Innagural Release – $89.99

3.       Signatory Bomwore 1972 – This stuff is the colour of mahogany and is a baby brother to the legendary black. – $634.99

Kilkerran “Work In Progress”: will hit the shelves next week. This first release of Kilkerran single malt is very collectible, and there are only 300 bottles available in the province. Kilkerran is a whisky from Campbeltown’s newest distillery, Glengyle. Glengyle was opened by Springbank distillery in an effort to refurbish the town’s distilling heritage and give it its own regional classification again (you need 3 distilleries). I’ll have much more on this next week, but for now a tasting note of mine: Nose: creamy and salty, sea breeze on a stormy day, soft vanillans, gentle oils, and jasmine; Palate: sweet buttery vanilla, so soft it caresses your palate, gentle oils which softly coat your mouth, briny with clean smoke. This whisky  tastes older than its 5 years, and was clearly selected from superior casks! Finish: clean and sweet, some smoky oils and soft briny sea notes. – $69.99

Also coming in next week is a new line of independently bottled whiskies called Duthies which are exclusive to Kensington Wine Market. We selected four whiskies from the eight available for our first release. They are: Auchentoshan 19Yr, Caol Ila 13Yr, Cragganmore 15Yr and Glen Scotia 17Yr. I’ll have more info on all of these next week in the Malt Messenger, including tasting notes and pricing.

Finally, don’t forget we still have some incredible fall events coming up:

1.       Fall Single Malt Festival – Thursday November 12th – This event is 80% sold out. It is your opportunity to sample more than 80 premium single malts including many old and rare whiskies, some of which aren’t available in Alberta. The cost to attend is $60 which includes your own crystal single malt glass.

2.       BenRiach Cask Release Party with Alistair Walker – Tuesday November 17th – This is the release party for our eagerly anticipated exclusive single cask bottling of BenRiach finished in a Madeira barrel. On Tuesday November 17th special guest Alistair Walker from BenRiach will be on hand to help us celebrate. Alistair is the distillery’s Brand Ambasador and is also the son of its director and Master Blender. He will give us our first taste of this latest cask as well as talk about the other incredible whiskies from BenRiach and Glendronach distilleries (all of which will be open for sampling). Special deeply discounted prices will be available this night only on all BenRiach single malts including pre-orders of our new cask.
