Cask-Strength Batch 2 reveals another side to Lochlea’s award-winning spirit – Scotch Whisky News

Cask-Strength Batch 2 reveals another side to

Lochlea’s award-winning spirit

Award-winning Ayrshire distillery, Lochlea, will be revealing its second cask strength whisky on 10th June, just in time for Father’s Day – the perfect dram for those looking for a bolder version of the farm-to-cask distillery’s much celebrated single malt whisky.

Cask Strength Batch 2 follows last year’s launch of the distillery’s first ever cask strength bottling, released to show whisky lovers how the Lochlea house spirit tastes at a higher ABV.

Batch 2 differs from last year’s release – not only is it older, but this year’s bottling uses a cask make-up that the distillery has never shown before: Pedro Xímenez (PX) (60%) and Oloroso (28%) sherry butts, as well as STR barriques (12%). The various cask profiles give the whisky a weightier, peppery European Oak finish.

Each cask brings a different dimension to the final vatting: the Oloroso brings a creamy, dry and fruity character, the STR casks offer a spice and depth and the PX gives an interesting and unique sweet mustiness to the spirit.

Bottled at 60% ABV, this limited edition whisky is one of the oldest Lochlea whiskies to be released, with the majority of the liquid being five years old alongside a small amount of four year old spirit. The five year old spirit in the bottling also adds a fuller complexity to the final whisky.

John Campbell, Lochlea’s Production Director said: “Last year’s Cask Strength exceeded expectations for a 4-year-old, setting a high standard. With Batch 2 this year, we’ve once again surpassed expectations. This whisky packs a punch, showcasing a complexity greater than the sum of its parts.”

“Cask Strength Batch 1 had lovely layers of fresh, tropical fruit. Batch 2 has less of the signature Lochlea green apple dominance, but will have more weight to it, with a floral, lively palate and peppery European Oak finish. Batch 2 will feel bigger and bolder than Batch 1, making it an interesting dram to explore.”

Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 2 will be available from 10th June, RRP: £66.50 – the perfect special gift for Father’s Day this year.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Apples, peach syrup, marmalade

Palate: Wild lavender, rose petals

About Lochlea Distillery:

Lochlea was originally a 222-acre livestock farm before being purchased by Neil and Jen McGeoch in 2006. After much consideration of the future of the farm and a successful trial to grow its own barley in 2015, the couple transformed the land and existing farm buildings into a fully operational distillery in 2017 and started distilling the following year. The farming side has remained a unique part of Lochlea, with the move into barley production – paving the way for Lochlea to be one of the very few fully grain-to-cask distilleries in Scotland. It also has a rich Scottish heritage with strong links to Robbie Burns, with the bard having worked and lived on the farm a several years.

Lochlea Distillery has recently won the following awards:

– Icons of Whisky Scotland 2024: Single Estate and Brand Innovator

– Icons of Whisky 2023: Single Estate Distillery of the Year

– San Francisco Spirits Competition 2023: Our Barley – GOLD

– Las Vegas Global Spirits Competition 2023: Our Barley – GOLD

– Scottish Field Summer Whisky Challenge 2023: Distilleries under 10 Years Old – GOLD

– Scottish Field Summer Challenge Awards 2024: Distilleries under 10 Years Old AND £50- £100 whiskies: GOLD for Fallow Edition (Second Crop)

OVERHOLT™ LAUNCHES A. OVERHOLT STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEY – American Whiskey News

OVERHOLT, THE LONGEST-STANDING AMERICAN WHISKEY BRAND, LAUNCHES A. OVERHOLT STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEY, REVITALIZING OVERHOLT’S ORIGINAL PENNSYLVANIA MONONGAHELA MASH WITH A CONTEMPORARY APPROACH

A. Overholt pays homage to its heritage with a fully balanced, robust and complex American rye available nationwide today

Clermont, Kentucky (April 10, 2024) – Today, Overholt™, the longest-standing American whiskey brand maintained continuously since 1810, announced its newest release, A. Overholt shepherding the newest evolution of Pennsylvania Rye imbued with heritage and legacy. Reintroducing consumers to one of the first styles of American whiskey, Overholt™ is reclaiming its stature as one of the most iconic rye whiskey brands by redefining the breadth and future of rye. A. Overholt uses the same mashbill Overholt™ founder, Abraham Overholt used in 1810 – 80% rye grain and 20% soft malted barley – creating a fully warm yet deep spice, similar to rye whiskey from the 1800’s.

Since inception, Overholt™ has forged forward through every era, including being one of the only spirits brands to survive prohibition, with the same clarity and tenacity Abraham Overholt had when crafting in 1810. Today, Freddie Noe, 8th Generation Master Distiller of the Fred B. Noe Distillery at The James B. Beam Distilling Co. champions the legacy, propelling the brand forward through the rebirth of this whiskey’s iconic legacy liquid, A. Overholt – Pennsylvania born, Kentucky made.

“With over 200 years of exceptional craftmanship, Overholt™ is engrained in American history with its industrial roots and as a spirit that has set the industry standard since inception,” said Freddie Noe. “The newest launch of A. Overholt is the result of highly crafted whiskey, informed and inspired by generational expertise, and I’m honored to steward this brand forward while paying homage to its past and our shared commitment to American whiskey innovation.”

The Overholt™ brand is known as A Keystone of American Rye Whiskey because of the shared qualities between Abe and The Keystone State itself: hard work, steely grit, big ideas, firm conviction, and its long-standing industrious spirit. It’s this conviction that drove Abraham Overholt forward – through wars, prohibition, cultural strife, and plenty of double shifts. Its indomitable spirit has remained resilient despite various changes in ownership and production throughout the years, including a change in hands to Abraham’s own grandson, American industrialist Henry Clay Frick. Today, the Pennsylvania-born whiskey of the Industrial Revolution is produced in Clermont, Kentucky at the James B. Beam Distilling Co., where the rich tradition of American production lives on.

A. Overholt joins the ranks of this beloved, and trade favorite portfolio currently consisting of Old Overholt 4YO, Old Overholt 4YO Bottled in Bond, and Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength. Enjoy A. Overholt neat or on the rocks or in a cocktail such as the Perfect Manhattan or Scofflaw to experience the boldness and versatility of the newest expression. A. Overholt will be available nationwide across the U.S., in-store and find a bottle near you on OverholtRye.com bottle locator, beginning April 2024. For real-time information about A. Overholt follow along on Instagram @BeamDistilling and www.beamdistilling.com.

Overholt Monongahela Mash – our first foray back to our roots with a Pennsylvania Style-inspired classic rye. As A Keystone of American Whiskey, its tenacious spirit has remained resilient throughout history’s changing landscape and consumer tastes with an unbroken chain of ownership and sale since its inception. James J. Fox Release Dublin – Killowen Distillery Irish Whiskey News

James J. Fox Exclusive Barántúil Release

Quote from Brendan – Founder & Distiller at Killowen

” Since we opened 5 years ago James Fox has been a venue, we longed to work with so it’s a pleasure to be here today. I am so happy we have found the perfect Irish whiskey for what is internationally an Iconic venue. I am surprised how delicate this pot still whiskey has become, with its balance of citrus and pot still spice harmoniously suspended in the most viscous of drops and the hint of leather workshop from the Killowen DNA. Why in hell did we make this cask only 120 litre? I hope there is enough to go around “

After 143 years of trading in 119 Grafton Street and five generations of family ownership, James J. Fox & Killowen Distillery are pleased to announce their collaboration in a limited, single cask Killowen Barántúil release.

The result is a fresh and crisp single pot still with an unmistakable citrusy and sweet character.

Bottled at cask strength of 57.2% and limited to 226 bottles, the Killowen Barántúil exclusive single cask is available from April 23rd 2024 in James J. Fox 119 Grafton Street and online on www.jamesfox.ie

Lux Row Distillers’ Blood Oath Pact 10 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey arrives at retail in April – American Whiskey News

Lux Row Distillers’ Blood Oath Pact 10 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey arrives at retail in April

In honor of the double-digit age milestone, the latest offering is double finished in Cabernet Franc and Merlot casks

ST.LOUIS (April 23, 2024) – Lux Row Master Distiller and Master Blender John Rempe marks a decade of distinction – and secrecy – as he renews his annual pact with bourbon drinkers by releasing Blood Oath Pact 10 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey double finished in Cabernet Franc and Merlot casks. A limited supply of 17,000 (3-in) cases will arrive at retail this month at a suggested price of $129.99 per 750 ml bottle. As with all of Rempe’s pacts, Blood Oath Pact 10 is offered at 98.6 proof (49.3% ABV).

Blood Oath Pact 10 combines some of the finest rare bourbons Rempe could find, including two well-bred ryed bourbons and one finished bourbon each complementing the others. In honor of Blood Oath’s double-digit age milestone, Rempe achieved a double finish for this year’s special, secret blend. The first finish was perfected in Cabernet Franc barrels, imbuing rich flavors of tart raspberries and black pepper. The second finish was refined in Merlot barrels, instilling the tastes of red stone fruits with undertones of vanilla, cocoa and anise. The result is a delicious and distinctive pour.

For a decade Rempe has sought out famous and forgotten rare bourbons and bottled them in combinations for his limited-release Blood Oath Pacts. Not to cater to anyone’s loyalties, he has sworn to never reveal where he finds his bourbon, but only promises to choose and make the best he knows.

“We wanted to create something truly distinctive and unique to mark our 10th edition of Blood Oath and we did just that,” said Rempe. “For this offering I sourced three extraordinary bourbons that could be elevated even further through a double finish in Cabernet Franc and Merlot casks, and would ultimately deliver the kind of rich, fruit-forward notes and smooth drinking experience I wanted to achieve. It’s a superb blend and I’m excited to share it.”

Lux Row only releases one new Blood Oath Pact annually, and each limited edition features a distinct and thoughtfully designed label. This year, a black label with striking silver highlights adorns the Blood Oath Pact 10 bottle. And like its predecessors, each bottle of Blood Oath Pact 10 comes in a commemorative fire-branded wooden display box.

The official launch of Blood Oath Pact 10 will include a total allocation of 51,000 bottles, 1,400 of which will be held for a future Trilogy release. The first Trilogy featuring Pacts 1, 2 and 3, was released in 2018, and the second Trilogy featuring Pacts 4, 5 and 6, was released in September 2021 in conjunction with National Bourbon Heritage Month. The next Blood Oath Trilogy, featuring Pacts 7, 8 and 9, will be offered later this year.

Bimber Distillery debuts ‘Shoulders of Giants’ single malt whiskies – English Whisky News

Bimber Distillery debuts ‘Shoulders of Giants’ single malt whiskies

Bimber today revealed the first releases from ‘Shoulders of Giants’ – the distillery’s homage to the diverse tapestry of thinkers, innovators and visionaries who have shaped our world. Exploring the breadth and depth of human endeavour and achievement, each release features attention-grabbing artwork and biographical details that celebrate the accomplishments of historical figures who have dared to dream and defied status quos.

Drawn from Bimber’s growing inventory of fruit-forward single malt whiskies, each Shoulders of Giants release offers a different story both inside and outside of the bottle. The initial bottlings consist of releases for the UK market: Dickens; Newton and Shakespeare, alongside Polish exclusives: Copernicus; Chopin and Curie.

The three UK exclusives will be launched on Friday 26th of April via Bimber’s website, each with an RRP of £94.00.

‘Dickens – The Novelist’ is drawn from a 1st fill American oak ex-bourbon cask and celebrates the Charles Dickens contribution to our appreciation of literature. Offering vibrant sweet tropical fruits, a syrupy honied texture and perfectly integrated wood spice, it is a reflection of the growing maturity of Bimber’s single malt whisky.

‘Newton – The Mathematician’ celebrates Sir Issac Newton’s contribution to our understanding of science. Crafted from lightly peated spirit, this release has been fully matured in 1st fill American oak. It is fruit-forward and classically Bimber, with notes of pineapple and papaya weaved with delicate threads of smoke and char.

The final UK exclusive release is ‘Shakespeare – The Playwright’. This release highlights William Shakespeare’s contribution to the English language. Finished in an ex-beer cask – this single malt whisky is drawn from the distillery’s first release of ex-barley wine casks, created in partnership with French brewery La Debauche. Rich and bold, it combines stone and tropical fruits with smooth caramel, complex maltiness and hints of nutty umami on the palate.

The Polish Shoulder of Giants releases will be available from selected Polish retailers including Tudor House from the end of April 2024 onwards.

‘Copernicus – The Polymath’ celebrates Nicolaus Copernicus and his contribution to our understanding of astronomy. This beautifully sweet single malt has been finished in a single Pedro Ximénez sherry cask which has imparted a delectable selection of bright and rich fruit-forward notes.

‘Chopin – The Composer’ honours Frédéric Chopin’s contribution to our appreciation of music. Finished in a single fino sherry cask, this Shoulders of Giants release offers the perfect harmony between the whisky’s naturally sweet fruit character and the nutty, saline freshness that has been imparted by the fino sherry cask.

‘Curie – The Scientist’ commemorates Marie Curie’s contribution to our understanding of radioactivity. Finished in a Spanish oloroso sherry this single malt has been imbued with a deep colour and rich notes of fruitcake and chopped nuts.

Speaking of the launch, Bimber’s Matt McKay said: “Our whisky making methodology is to take the learning of the past and to adapt it to make the whisky of the future. As such, it is entirely fitting for Bimber to be looking to historical figures who have shaped our societies and consciousnesses.

The Shoulders of Giants releases not only pay homage and celebrate the achievements of national heroes – they also demonstrate the growing maturity and complexity of our single malt whiskies, which are proving to be increasingly versatile in a wide range of cask types and styles. Going forward we have many more giants to explore, and we’re looking forward to telling their stories.”

All six Shoulders of Giants releases were crafted to Bimber’s exacting standards. The spirit was produced from the distillery’s single farm barley and malted on a dedicated floor at Warminster Maltings before being fermented for seven days in bespoke, on-site constructed American oak washbacks. Distillation took place in Bimber’s directly fired copper pot stills which produce a richly layered and remarkably fruit-forward spirit.

Loch Lomond Whiskies Unveils new 25-year-old Malt Whisky as it Bolsters its Impressive Portfolio – Scotch Whisky News

Loch Lomond Whiskies unveils new 25-year-old malt whisky as it bolsters its impressive portfolio

A celebration of the distillery’s remarkable straight neck stills

Independent distiller, Loch Lomond Whiskies, has unveiled a new 25-year-old malt whisky, the latest addition to the brand’s growing portfolio.

Loch Lomond 25 Year Old is a celebration of the distillery’s remarkable straight neck stills and the whisky-making team’s ability to create unique flavours through expertise in distillation and maturation.

The maturation process has been carefully managed by Loch Lomond Whiskies’ master blender, Michael Henry, who joined the distillery in 2007.

Using whisky only from the unique straight neck pot stills, Michael has brought together three different spirits with a range of flavour profiles and strengths, ingeniously crafting them into one single expression.

Each whisky has been matured for 25 years in first-fill, refill, and recharred American oak casks, then carefully married together to create Loch Lomond 25 Year Old. The result is a rich, complex whisky that showcases the Loch Lomond signature style of fruit, honey, and soft smoke.

A quarter of a century in the making, this latest expression draws its flavour from extensive maturation in the traditional, time-honoured care and skill of the distillery’s onsite cooperage. As one of only four distillers in Scotland to have its own cooperage, Loch Lomond Whiskies can ensure that barrel repairs and charring are carried out to an exacting standard, so every cask is perfect for maturing whisky.

Since production began in 1966, ingenuity has been at the heart of Loch Lomond Distillery’s methods. It is home to Scotland’s only set of straight neck pot stills, which allows Michael Henry and his team to carefully shape the character of the whisky at the point of distillation, creating a lighter spirit with a distinctive fruit flavour.

Presented in a charcoal blue display case inspired by the hues of its namesake loch, Loch Lomond 25 Year Old’s packaging is finished with copper foil accents which pay homage to the distillery’s unique straight neck pot stills. Each case and bottle carries Michael Henry’s signature.

Michael Henry, master blender at Loch Lomond Group, said: “The release of Loch Lomond 25 Year Old is a significant milestone for us. This is a very special whisky which is perhaps one of the finest examples of our signature distillery style and underlines our continuous commitment to creating remarkable flavours.

Loch Lomond 25 Year Old is non-chill filtered, bottled at 46% ABV and available to purchase from the Loch Lomond Whiskies online store and worldwide through specialist retailers, priced at £390.

About Loch Lomond Whiskies

Loch Lomond Whiskies is an award-winning, independent Scotch whisky distiller which has been producing the finest single malt whiskies since 1814.  As a Highland malt, it is part of the largest and most diverse whisky-making region in Scotland.

The original site of the Loch Lomond Distillery was established near Tarbert, towards the northwest end of Loch Lomond. In the 1960s, under the leadership of American entrepreneur and chemist, Duncan Scott (who was instrumental in the ongoing success of Scotland’s oldest licensed distillery, Littlemill), a new site was created in Alexandria, which began a move to a more innovative philosophy and style of whisky-making that is still used today.

Located only a few miles from the famous loch, the distillery has a whisky-making capability like no other, using a combination of traditional swan-neck and its signature straight-neck-stills, which are unique to Loch Lomond Whiskies.

The straight-neck stills give Master Blender Michael Henry greater control over the distillation process, allowing him to carefully manipulate the flavour profile of each whisky, and providing a signature fruit, honey and soft smoke flavour profile.

Loch Lomond Whiskies is one of only four distillers in Scotland to have its own onsite cooperage, ensuring that barrel repairs and charring are carried out to an exacting standard, so every cask is perfect for maturing whisky.

The distillery’s multi-award-winning range includes Loch Lomond Original; Loch Lomond 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond Inchmurrin 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond 18 Year Old; Loch Lomond 21 Year Old and Loch Lomond 30 Year Old, as well as Loch Lomond Single Grain (peated and unpeated) and the deluxe blend Loch Lomond Signature.

In 2023, it was recognised as the ‘Most Awarded Distillery’ at the globally renowned San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023, achieving multiple Double Gold and Gold Awards for its collection of malt whisky brands.

Last year, Loch Lomond 18 Year Old was revealed as The Whisky Exchange’s coveted ‘Whisky of the Year 2024’, achieving superior scores from the judging panel for its full-bodied and fruity character.
