Angels Whisky Club in Frankfurt – Scotch Whisky News

angeles

We visited the InterWhisky in Frankfurt on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th November. Beside taking tasting notes from one stand to another we attended two Master Classes held by Alistair Walker (Sales and Marketing Director BenRiach): The wood finishes of GlenDronach and the special bottlings of BenRiach.

Alistair is a funny guy with a lot of passion in what he does. We had good laugh during the classes, had drams of fantastic whiskies and got a lot of information on BenRiach and GlenDronach. Here we found our personal “Christmas whisky”: The BenRiach 15yo Madeira Wood Finish. Nose: lot of vanilla, melon and peaches. Mouth: fruity, hazelnut and madeira. Great whisky for this years festive season.  From the Old & Rare range we’ve to recommend the following stars: Highland Park Bicentenary 1977 Vintage Repatriation, The Macallan 30yo and Laphroaig 25yo.

Talking recommendations, our top five of this years InterWhisky are:

Bunnahabhain 16yo Manzanilla Sherry Wood Finish
BenRiach 15yo Madeira Wood Finish
Ballechin #5 Marsala Matured
GlenDronach 14yo Sauternes Finish
Connemara Turf Mor – peaty Irish Whisky, which is actually just coming out on January

Old Pulteney Finalists Go Head-to-Head To Become a Record Breaking Arctic Explorer – Scotch Whisky News

old-pulteney-pole

Old Pulteney Finalists Go Head-to-Head to become a Record Breaking Arctic Explorer

On Saturday 20th November, Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky put 48 international adventurers to the ultimate test in the Pole Position Live Finals. The unique global completion attracted entries from all over the world, with applicants eager to win a place on Old Pulteney Row to the Pole – a world first arctic adventure.

The Old Pulteney Pole Position competition was launched in September to put global thrill seekers to the ultimate test. Sponsored by Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the competition offers one extraordinary person the once in a lifetime opportunity to become an active crew member in a record breaking expedition.

In August 2011, adventurer and sportsman Jock Wishart will lead a six strong crew through some of the harshest conditions on earth in an attempt to row to the magnetic North Pole. In a specially designed ‘ice boat’, Jock and his crew will set off from Canada on a 450 mile route across the arctic and are searching for one determined person to join them. The voyage will require extreme physical and mental endurance and if successful, will make history.

To enter Old Pulteney Pole Position, applicants were asked to apply online and state why they have what it takes to become Jock’s 6th crew member.  Hundreds of international entrants applied and a shortlist of forty five finalists competed head-to-head in the Pole Position Challenge Day on Saturday 20th November at Eton Rowing Centre, the Olympic rowing centre for 2012.  To test their physical and mental abilities, contestants battled it out in a two and a half hour endurance row, group interviews and psychometric tests. The winner will be announced at the London Boat Show in January and will receive personal training from Jock before embarking on the life changing expedition in August 2011.

Jock Wishart says:

“The competition has attracted a huge volume of international entries, all of an incredibly high standard. When you’re planning an Arctic expedition, the most important thing is your crew, we are confident that we will find an extraordinary person amongst the fantastic group of finalists to join our expedition team.”

The Old Pulteney Row to the Pole is of global significance as both a pioneering maritime adventure and an environmental expedition. The voyage has never been undertaken before and is only now possible due to the increase in seasonal ice melt of the Arctic landscape. The attempt will be captured on camera for UK and international audiences and will follow Jock’s preparations and the 4-6 week long row where his team will face dramatic ice-bound coastlines and shifting sea-ice barriers. His background as an expedition leader and his long track record of organising successful record attempts will stand him in good stead as he faces his biggest challenge to date.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky, is diligently crafted at Pulteney Distillery in Wick. It is the most northerly distillery on the UK Mainland and was founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wick’s herring boom.  The distillery lies in the heart of ‘Pulteneytown’, which was created for all the fishermen at the time, and is embedded in the deep rooting history of this coastal town, which used to be one of the most important and biggest herring fishing ports in Europe.

Old Pulteney Single Malt whisky has a long standing association with the sea and is also known as the ‘Maritime Malt’. Its carefully crafted taste carries the windswept and rugged character of the North, the salty and fresh air of the North Sea and the distillery’s rich maritime heritage runs through every drop of this fine malt.

200 Years of the Jura Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

juraemailheader_0

The first sign of frost has been sighted on the island! Time to get those log fires burning and wrap up warm. As we edge into winter there’s one new arrival we’re all very excited about: the release of the new Jura 21 year old limited edition whisky created to commemorate 200 years of the Jura Distillery.

To tell you the truth, Jura and whisky have been together since way before the distillery first opened in 1810. However, the distillery as we all know and love today, was re built by two local estate owners Robin Fletcher and Riley-Smith along with distillery architect Delme-Evans in the year 1963 bringing new life and hope to the island. And that is why we’re celebrating 1810 with a limited edition 21 year old malt finished in an original cask from 1963! Two memorable years, one exceptional malt. And what a malt it is!

The unique vintage 1963 Oloroso sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass have done their bit to create a rich and full-bodied masterpiece. Now if you ask me, this would make an ideal collectors item, but I like to drink my whisky so I hope you will too and think fondly of Jura while you enjoy a dram of this wonderful spirit. Willie T (the other Willie as he’s sometimes known) has put together his very own tasting video which covers everything you need to know about the malt and its history. You can view it here.

We want you to be a part of this special occasion and should you get your hands on a bottle of our beloved 21 year old then I’ll invite you to come over and meet the team. I’ll give you a tour of the distillery and your own private tasting session. We’ll go through the range, one by one and even share a dram or two from a few of our more exclusive expressions that we keep safely locked away! Now where better to enjoy our precious malt than in the very place that made it on the occasion of our 200th anniversary?

I’ve kept my diary clear in anticipation. Until then.

Slainte

CHIVAS BROTHERS REVEALS CREATIVE SEASONAL GIFT OFFERING

Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky and premium gin business of Pernod Ricard, is launching a series of stylish limited edition gift sets in time for the lucrative festive period. Luxury gift packaging for its award-winning, premium brands including  The Glenlivet, Ballantine’s and Chivas Regal, is set to attract new and existing customers by maximising on-shelf prominence across international markets.

Chivas Regal, Europe’s leading super-premium Scotch whisky, is launching a stunning gift set designed by prolific artist Alex Trochut in key markets globally. Inspired by Chivas Regal heraldry, the design incorporates a contemporary, bold monogram based on the twists and movements of a steel ribbon. The striking tin, which has a dramatic metallic finish, combines the simplicity, elegance and masculinity of the Chivas Regal brand, in a contemporary presentation.

Ballantine’s Finest, the leading Scotch whisky brand in Europe, will celebrate 100 years of the expression’s iconic square shouldered bottle with the launch of a premium gift tin. Adorned with the brand’s centenary logo, the sleek navy blue and silver case tells the story of how George Ballantine left an impression a century ago when he introduced the distinctive bottle and logo, which remains synonymous with Ballantine’s Finest today. The pack also includes a silicon ice cube tray to encourage off-trade consumers to enjoy their Ballantine’s over iconic ‘B’ embossed ice cubes.

Ballantine’s 12 Year Old is extending its ‘Beyond’ activity with the introduction of gift packaging which invites consumers to look beyond the ordinary, to discover the extraordinary. The striking packaging will engage consumers through its intriguing use of design and print which creates the illusion that the pack is wrapped in a tartan ribbon and secured with a metal seal. The 3D effect is achieved by multiple embossing which lifts the ribbon off the tin and creates a weave detail. The effect continues inside the pack with Ballantine’s 12 Year Old tasting notes embossed on the inside of the lid.

The Glenlivet, the single malt that started it all, is introducing three luxury gift sets for its 12, 15 and 18 Year Old expressions. The 70cl bottles will be housed in a premium dark green, red and blue box respectively which boldly features the brand’s crest and age statement. The elegant gift packaging flips open to reveal the bottle encased by premium red inner packaging. Offering on-shelf stand-out during the significant sales period, The Glenlivet packaging will reinforce the quality credentials of the world’s No 2 single malt whisky.

Eric Benoist, International Marketing Director, Chivas Brothers says, “We recognise the importance of providing our customers with specialist gift offerings during this key sales period. GLENDRONACH RELEASES LATEST BATCH OF SINGLE CASK BOTTLINGS – Scotch Whisky News

theglendronachdistillery1

GLENDRONACH RELEASES LATEST BATCH OF SINGLE CASK BOTTLINGS

JUST in time for Christmas, GlenDronach, the richly-sherried Highland single malt, is issuing its latest batch of single cask bottlings. As always, it’s very limited, of exceptional quality and available worldwide.

Founded in 1826, GlenDronach produces an award-winning range of 12, 15 and 18 year-olds. But in addition, it also offers a superb selection of limited edition expressions, and Batch 3 is the latest.

Handpicked by Master Distiller Billy Walker, it comprises five outstanding casks from 1989 to 1996 for GlenDronach aficionados to savour. In nose, appearance and palate, the five are classic fruit-laden GlenDronach – offering brambles, ripe plums, raisins, dates and toffee-apple elements.

Three have matured in Pedro Ximinez Sherry Puncheons while two have been carefully aged in Oloroso Sherry Butts.

The five, in ascending chronological order, are:

Year    Number        Strength      Age             Cask Type

1989    3833                53.5%        20yo         Pedro Ximinez Sherry Puncheon

1990    3059                54.9%        20yo         Pedro Ximinez Sherry Puncheon

1990    3068                52.6%        20yo         Pedro Ximinez Sherry Puncheon

1991    2512                51.9%        18yo         Oloroso Sherry Butt

1996    202                  58.3%        14yo         Oloroso Sherry Butt

The range is astonishingly subtle and varied. On the nose, the 1989 bottling commences with full earthy aromas leading to a huge portion of dried fig and sweet date pudding. And on the palate, it offers concentrated dried fruit with figs and dates, with toffee-nut brittle on the finish. Contrast that with the 1996, which on the nose suggests super-ripe morrelo cherries and stewed plums combining with spiced raisins and all-spice while on the palate it delivers sweet plum pudding and chocolate-coated raisins with an elegant sherry finish.

Batch 3 has been bottled at cask strength, with natural colour and non chill-filtered. The bottles are individually numbered by hand and presented in a gift box.

Marketing Manager Kerry White said: “Our limited edition expressions have been very successful in the past and we are confident this latest batch will give huge pleasure to our customers. We believe they balance perfection, rarity and sweet delicacy in one glass – the perfect antidote to long winter nights!”

Glengoyne 21 Years Old Wins Gold at Scottish Field Whisky Challenge – Scotch Whisky News

Glengoyne 21 Years Old Wins Gold at Scottish Field Whisky Challenge

glengoyne-1

glengoyne-2

Caption: Alan Wardrop, UK Sales Manager for Ian Macleod Distillers collects the Gold Award for Glengoyne 21 Years Old.

Glengoyne 21 Years Old has scooped a prestigious gold award at the highly respected Scottish Field Whisky Challenge for the third year in a row underlining its consistent, exceptional quality.

The panel of expert judges, which include Richard Joynson of Loch Fyne Whiskies, Keir Sword of Royal Mile Whiskies and Darren Leitch, of The Whisky Shop group, rated Glengoyne 21 Years Old in the £30 – £75 category for its “Well balanced palate and pleasant finish”. Judge Tatsuya Minagawa, Whisky Bar Manager at the Highland Inn, commented that the whisky had a “Soft warm and creamy nose with a good level of sherry and weak coffee. Creamy to taste with a delicious and complex finish.”

Launched in 2001, the SFWC, is a ‘blind’ tasting of Scotch whiskies and universally acknowledged as one of the most significant taste tests with an esteemed panel of judges.

Alan Wardrop, UK Sales Manager for Ian Macleod Distiller’s, commented: “It is a real honour to be so highly commended by a team of such well respected judges. It really is testimony to Glengoyne’s craftsmanship and heritage passed down over the generations, including the slowest distillation process of any Scotch whisky, that makes our whisky stand out.”

Glengoyne fought off stiff competition from Big Peat, Strathisla 30 Years Old and Glen Grant 25 Years Old to take the Gold Award with a score of 3.83 out of 5.

Richard Bath, Editor of Scottish Field said of the competition: “This is the 10th year of the Scottish Field Whisky Challenge and a landmark moment for us. The reason for the awards success has been its unimpeachable credibility.

“Any whisky that appears in these pages is guaranteed to be a gold standard dram.”

Glengoyne Distillery earlier this year announced a new long-term marketing initiative based on the concept “SLOW” centred on Glengoyne’s distillation speed, which is SLOWER than any other Scotch Whisky. Glengoyne attributes its high quality, smooth tasting malt to its slow distillation, which is about one third the normal rate. Glengoyne 21 Years Old uses 100% first fill European Oak Sherry Casks and, as with all Glengoyne bottlings, is natural colour.

Only the slowest distillation process, untainted by peat smoke, creates Glengoyne THE REAL TASTE OF MALT.

For further details on stockist and distribution details for Glengoyne, contact Alan Wardrop, UK Sales Manager, Ian Macleod Distillers.
