Glenmorangie offers a Father’s Day gift to remember

— Iconic Scottish brand will inscribe the names of 1843 special fathers on their new ‘Founders Wall’ in a tribute to year the distillery was opened —

Glenmorangie is offering the ultimate Father’s Day gift this year with the chance for whisky lovers to create their own legacy.

The iconic Scottish brand will inscribe the names of 1843 people on the ‘Founders Wall’ of the Glenmorangie Distillery in a tribute to the year of its foundation. By receiving a bottle of the award-winning Glenmorangie 18 Years Old, whisky lovers can enjoy their own slice of history.

The unique opportunity to make your father part of a ‘Living Legacy’ by having his name engraved on the wall of the Glenmorangie Distillery visitor centre is a timeless gift for Father’s Day.

Dr Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation at The Glenmorangie Company, said: “The ‘Living Legacy’ initiative means that whisky aficionados can become part of the Glenmorangie story. When they visit our distillery in Tain they can enjoy seeing their own name up on the Founders Wall and feel part of our proud history. This is the ultimate timeless gift for Father’s Day.

“Glenmorangie 18 Years Old is a rare, unnecessarily well made single malt whisky of distinction. It has a silky smooth texture, a long enticing finish. It is an intriguing contrast of the Glenmorangie house style balanced with the flavours of 18 years of ageing which include sweet dried fruit, melting honey and nuttiness.”

Glenmorangie has carved out its reputation as a pioneer, marrying traditional techniques with innovative processes, including using Scotland’s tallest stills. The running of the Distillery is entrusted to the ‘Men of Tain’ – the skilled craftsmen charged with perfecting Glenmorangie’s spirit.

Glenmorangie 18 Years Old is seen as the brand’s ‘Living Legacy’ due to its combination of heritage and modernity, and its flavour balance of maturity and vibrancy. It was recently awarded a ‘Double Gold’ medal at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

A limited edition sleeve has been added to the Glenmorangie 18 Years Old outer packaging with an envelope inside detailing the information of how to apply to be a part of this special piece of history. But for those who do not make the first 1843, they are still in for a treat. Full details can be accessed at www.glenmorangie.com/1843

WHISKY A GO-GO: GLENDRONACH’S “CASK IN A VAN” TO TOUR BELGIUM AGAIN IN JUNE – Scotch Whisky News

WHISKY A GO-GO: GLENDRONACH’S “CASK IN A VAN” TO TOUR BELGIUM AGAIN IN JUNE

FOR the last two years, GlenDronach malt whisky has selected a rare single cask from its Aberdeenshire distillery…and toured it around Belgium in the back of a van!

The unusual tasting tour – called “Cask in a Van” – has proved so successful that it’s being repeated again later this month.

The quirky Roadshow starts in Kampenhoudt on June 20 and ends in Waremme on the night of June 25.

Regional Sales Manager Donald MacLellan said: “Belgium is one of our fastest-growing markets, and we’re delighted to take this exceptional cask on this tasting tour. So if lovers of GlenDronach have difficulty getting to a liquor store that stocks it, we’ll bring it to them!

“With our specially-liveried van, we’re offering Belgians the chance to savour and purchase a truly excellent GlenDronach single cask whisky – this time it’s a 2002 release at 55% vol which has been matured in a Pedro Ximinez Butt. In addition, we’ll be offering tastings of our award-winning 12, 15 and 18 year-old core range.

“Like last year, people will be given the opportunity to fill their own bottle of GlenDronach straight from the cask and, as it’s a limited edition, it’s going to be a highly collectable item.”

The 8 year-old’s tasting notes suggest it’s a classic GlenDronach with a spicy sherry twist:

Nose: sweet oak and spiced fruit cake intermingle with honey and walnut notes. Fresh and clean with plenty of life.

Appearance: rich deep gold with a fantastic mahogany glow.

Palate: a spicy sherry concoction with balanced toasted oak notes and brown sugar. Vanilla beans and roasted nuts. Bold earthy notes add lovely depth and body. A real heavyweight for the vintage and plenty of maturity for such youth.

The tour dates and locations are:

Monday June 20 – Tasttoe, Kampenhoudt
Tuesday June 21 – Hardies, Mol
Wednesday June 22 – Crombe, Kortrijk
Thursday June 23 – Verloo, Antwerpen
Friday June 24 – W&P, Liege
Saturday June 25 (afternoon) – Barrique, Charleroi
Saturday June 25 (evening) – PDV, Waremme

GlenDronach’s core range is available in over one hundred specialist stores throughout Belgium.

Jim Beam® Establishes Revolutionary Bourbon-Making Process with Release of Devil’s Cut™ – American Whiskey News

Jim Beam® Establishes Revolutionary Bourbon-Making Process with Release of Devil’s Cut™

Clermont, KY (May 25, 2011) – Continuing to push the envelope in the bourbon category, Jim Beam® debuts the latest innovation in its portfolio – Devil’s Cut™. The new, premium bourbon whiskey is created using a proprietary process that extracts the liquid trapped inside the wood of the bourbon barrels. The product is a robust premium bourbon with a deep color, aroma and character that showcases notes of wood, oak and vanilla derived from the barrel wood.

Devil’s Cut plays off the notion of “Angel’s Share” in the bourbon-making process. As bourbon ages, a portion of liquid is lost from the barrel due to evaporation – that’s the Angel’s Share. After aging, when the bourbon is dumped out of the barrel, a certain amount of whiskey is left trapped within the wood of every barrel—it’s that liquid, and the rich flavors from deep within the barrel wood it contains, that has been extracted and put back into extra-aged Jim Beam Bourbon to create Devil’s Cut.

“The barrel is the soul of any bourbon – it always has been,” said Fred Noe, seventh-generation Beam family distiller and great-grandson of Jim Beam. “With Devil’s Cut, we’re breaking new ground by unleashing that trapped bourbon from the barrel and giving people a chance to really experience that bold flavor in a way that they never have before.”

To create Devil’s Cut, Jim Beam distillers begin by emptying barrels of extra-aged, six-year Jim Beam Bourbon. The barrels are then agitated through a proprietary process to pull the trapped bourbon and flavors from the barrel wood. The liquid (with the extracted elements it now contains) is then held for an appropriate length of time in a proprietary process until it has developed the proper balance of bourbon notes. In the final step, this special liquid is carefully added back to extra-aged Jim Beam to create the finely-balanced, smooth 90 proof Devil’s Cut Bourbon.

“Devil’s Cut brings you even closer to the bourbon making process,” said Rob Mason, Director, U.S. Bourbons, Beam Global Spirits & Wine. “We think this is a product that both our long-time fans and curious newcomers will appreciate. It’s an opportunity to experience the charred oak barrel, which has always played a crucial part in making Bourbon.”

Devil’s Cut has already been well-received within the bourbon industry. Charles K. Cowdery, author of Bourbon, Straight, states: “I predict the enthusiast community will be enthusiastic about Jim Beam Devil’s Cut…In the course of about a year, Beam Global has [become] arguably the most innovative [spirits company], and their willingness to bet the flagship brand on these escapades makes it even more impressive.”

Jack Bettridge, Senior Features Editor at Cigar Aficionado describes Devil’s Cut as “a very full-flavored, tasty whiskey that manages to belie its origin and coloration by being smooth and approachable as well.”

Devil’s Cut will be available in select states (NH, PA, VA, WA, OH, NC, and OR) in May, and nationwide this summer for a suggested retail price of $23.99 for a 750ML bottle. For more information about Devil’s Cut, go to www.jimbeamdevilscut.com or visit us on Facebook® at www.facebook.com/JimBeam.

DADS WOULD BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED TO GET YAMAZAKI SINGLE MALT WHISKY ON FATHERS’ DAY – Japanese Whisky News

DADS WOULD BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED TO GET YAMAZAKI SINGLE MALT WHISKY ON FATHERS’ DAY

London, June, 2011 – International award winning Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskies from Suntory have a habit of creating pleasant surprises with their smoothness, flavours and consistently high quality. They would certainly surprise most dads who are given a bottle on Father’s Day.

Yamazaki whiskies are among the most honoured single malt whiskies in the world with fifteen gold, silver and trophy awards won since 2003. Whisky experts like Dave Broom and Neil Ridley have long recognised the excellence of Japanese whisky and as whisky judges have singled out Suntory whiskies like Yamazaki for top honours.

With intriguing flavours and a smoothness true whisky lovers can appreciate, Yamazaki will open new horizons for dads who know and like their whiskies and help make this a memorable Father’s Day.

Yamazaki 12 year old is Japan’s leading single malt whisky, much prized for its delicate and elegant taste. The nose of green apple, pine, cedar, honey and orange peel becomes spiced wood, orange marmalade and honey on the palate. The finish has a lingering woody character. This whisky won a Gold Award at the recent San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2011.

Topping this is the Double Gold Award and the title Best Other Whisky (non Scotch) in the World won by the Yamazaki 18 year old single malt whisky. The premium Yamazaki 18 year old is all richness and depth. The nose of sherry, raisins, maraschino cherries and coffee cream chocolate rewards the palate with dark chocolate, rum, raison toffee and dark coffee beans. As you might expect, the finish is long, rich and dark.

While the inspiration was Scotland, Yamazaki single malt whiskies have developed their own unique style and position within the world of whiskies over the years.

Long maturation in wood such as the local Japanese oak called Mizunara – it imparts aromas of incense – and American oak help to create complex aromas and tastes much sought after by whisky connoisseurs.

Yamazaki is a whisky with a long heritage which dates back to the 1920s when Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii built Japan’s first and now oldest distillery. Using copper pot stills the Yamazaki distillery was the first of
its kind outside Europe. The distillery is situated in the green and wooded Vale of Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto in a calm and natural environment with an exceptional source of pure water.

Yamazaki is the most popular malt whisky in Japan and is now increasingly appreciated in Europe and the USA as reflected in its international honours.

Yamazaki single malt whiskies are available from:  Selfridges, Harvey Nicols, The Whisky Exchange, independent specialist retailers and drinkon.com priced from:
