HISTORIC AND RARE WHISKY FROM 1883 TAKES PRIDE OF PLACE AT BONHAMS, EDINBURGH

An exceptionally rare bottle of The Glenlivet, distilled in 1883 and bottled in 1931 by George & John Gordon Smith, is to be auctioned by Bonhams at their whisky sale in Edinburgh on 12 October. It has a pre-sale estimate of £15,000-20,000.

The bottle has an impeccable pedigree. It was originally owned by Captain William Smith Grant, the great grandson of Colonel George Smith founder of The Glenlivet Distillery and has been in the family ever since.

Bonhams whisky specialist, Martin Green, said, “It is very rare for a whisky of this age with such an excellent provenance to come up at auction. It will still be perfectly drinkable though at several hundred pounds a dram it is perhaps more likely to remain in the bottle.”

Also for sale is a bottle of The Macallan-50 year old, distilled in 1928 and bottled in 1983. Number 50 of 500, the bottle has an estimate of £10,000-12,000.

GLENDRONACH TO SUPPLY 25 YEAR-OLD SINGLE MALT FOR DONALD TRUMP’S NEW £750M SCOTTISH GOLF RESORT – Scotch Whisky News

GLENDRONACH TO SUPPLY 25 YEAR-OLD SINGLE MALT FOR DONALD TRUMP’S NEW £750M SCOTTISH GOLF RESORT

GLENDRONACH Distillery has been selected by Donald Trump to supply the commemorative 25-year-old single malt that will mark the opening next summer of his £750 million golf complex on the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The rare whisky chosen for the official Trump International Golf Links has been hand-selected by Master Distiller Billy Walker from the thousands of top-quality single casks maturing at GlenDronach’s warehouses at Forgue, near Huntly.

Mr Trump has chosen one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries to create a limited edition whisky for his eighteen-hole championship golf course.

It will be known, quite simply, as “Trump Scotland Single Malt Scotch Whisky”.

GlenDronach, founded in 1826, will initially supply 500 bottles to celebrate the grand opening.

Last year Mr Trump invited a handful of distilleries close to the course to create the finest whisky available for the resort.

Billy Walker, Managing Director of The Benriach Distillery Company, owners of GlenDronach, said his team were “extremely proud” to be involved with the Trump golf resort.

“As we are an Aberdeenshire distillery, we have close geographical proximity to the superb Trump development and as such see our award-winning whisky as a natural choice to commemorate the opening.

“When it opens next summer, Mr Trump’s golf course will be a byword for excellence, as will the rare GlenDronach single malt we have specially selected for the occasion.”

Mr Walker would not be drawn on specific details of the single cask, but confirmed it would be a classic GlenDronach – a silky-smooth fusion of sherry sweetness and concentrated fruit. The whisky will be released during the first half of 2012 to coincide with the opening of the golf complex.

Spanning approximately 500 hectares of land on the north-east coast of Aberdeenshire, the Trump development comprises a world-class championship links golf course suitable for hosting major international events and a second 18-hole links golf course; an iconic hotel set amidst an array of luxury holiday homes; and a residential village formed within the unique setting of Menie Estate.

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY RELEASES 2011 ANTIQUE COLLECTION

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (August, 2011) The long wait is over! Buffalo Trace Distillery will release its 2011 Antique Collection in September. The much anticipated collection will once again feature five limited-release whiskeys of various ages, recipes and proofs. Here’s what ardent fans can expect:

Sazerac Rye 18 Year Old

Last year’s release was given a liquid gold award and a 97.5 rating in Jim Murray’s 2011 Whisky Bible. This 2011 rye whiskey release is described as “intense spice with underlying sweetness and dry finish.” Hopefully critics agree this batch is just as good, or better!

Eagle Rare 17 Year Old

The previous edition of this bourbon was honored with a Gold Medal at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The 2011 edition was distilled in the Spring of 1993 and has been aging on the 2nd, 3rd and 6th floors of Warehouses I and K. After 18 years and 7 months of aging under its belt, it brings to the table notes of leather, vanilla and tobacco.

George T. Stagg

The 2010 release of this long-time favorite was named “Spirit of the Year” by F. Paul Pacult in the 2011 Spirit Journal. The 2011 George T. Stagg was found in Warehouses H, I, and K. This uncut, unfiltered bourbon was distilled back in the winter of 1993 and weighs in at 142.6 proof—some bold stuff! This whiskey tastes of espresso, chocolate and vanilla.

William Larue Weller

William Larue Weller is the Antique Collection’s uncut, unfiltered, wheated recipe bourbon. The previous edition was named “Bourbon of the Year” in Jim Murray’s 2011 Whisky Bible. The 2011 offering was distilled in the summer of 1998 and aged on the fourth and fifth floors of Warehouses N, O, and P. This William Larue Weller release registers in at 133.5 proof – a lot stronger than last year! It tastes of honey, caramel, light toffee and pipe tobacco.

Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye

Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye is an uncut and unfiltered straight rye whiskey. The 2010 edition was named “Rye Whiskey of the Year” by Jim Murray in his 2011 Whisky Bible. This year’s Handy was distilled in the spring of 2005, aged on the sixth floor of Warehouse K and weighs in at 128.6 proof. The flavor has been described as “Christmas cake and allspice. Bold and yummy.”

The Antique Collection was introduced more than a decade ago and has become a cult favorite among whiskey connoisseurs. Since 2000 these whiskeys have garnered numerous awards from such notable publications as Malt Advocate Magazine, Spirit Journal and Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

“It will be hard to top last year’s batch of awards,” said Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley. “But we think this year’s collection has just as much to offer. I’m anxious to hear if everyone else agrees.”

These Antique Collection whiskeys will be available in limited quantities starting in late September. Suggested retail price is $70 each. For more information visit www.greatbourbon.com or contact Kris Comstock at kcomstock@buffalotrace.com.

BenRiach’s Rare 1978 Firkin Cask Yields Just Forty Sublime Bottles – Scotch Whisky News

benriach

BenRiach’s Rare 1978 Firkin Cask yields just forty sublime bottles.

Speyside’s BenRiach Distillery has announced its most exclusive bottling ever, the BenRiach 1978 Firkin Cask.

Only forty bottles of this exquisite 32 year old single malt will be available, making this an ultra-rare BenRiach expression.

The bottling follows the discovery of an unusual “Firkin” cask at the Elgin distillery.

BenRiach’s Managing Director Billy Walker takes up the story: “It’s always exciting to discover exceptionally rare and unique casks in our warehouses, and BenRiach has more than its fair share!

“Upon unearthing this Firkin, we knew we had found something truly extraordinary and sublime which will delight even the most demanding of BenRiach whisky aficionados.”

Mr Walker explained Firkin casks were traditionally used for the maturation of fine ale and the name is derived from the Middle Dutch word “vierdekijn”, meaning ‘fourth’ – in other words, a quarter of a full-size barrel.

“Because a Firkin’s size is smaller than that of a standard barrel, there’s a greater surface to liquid ratio when the spirit undergoes maturation, and this imparts a more intense, fuller flavour,” he added.

“This cask, number 6337, is one of the only two Firkins in our possession. Distilled and filled to cask on June 26, 1978, and bottled at 40.1% earlier this year, the style of the whisky is classic Speyside. Due to the size of the cask, and the age of the whisky, it has generated only forty bottles, so it’s bound to become a much sought-after collector’s item.”

The packaging has been designed to reflect the super-premium nature of the whisky, with the bottle silk-screened and the closure sealed via a wax dip, all of which is housed in a beautiful hand-crafted wooden box.

The forty bottles will be available from September 2011.

Sky’s The Limit For Fearless Whisky Worker – Scotch Whisky News

Sky´s The Limit For Fearless Whisky Worker

Donald Jenkinson (57), who has worked for Chivas Brothers at its Kilmalid bottling plant in Dumbarton for 37 years, undertook the hair-raising challenge for ex-servicemen’s charity Erskine. The parachute jump took place at Strathallan airfield in Perthshire, where he was able to get coast-to-coast views of Scotland as he hurtled to the ground.

Donald, who lives near Dumbarton Castle, raised £550 sponsorship cash through the daring stunt, with another £500 added by Chivas Brothers through the company’s doubling up scheme, which matches charity amounts raised by employees.

Donald said: “I had decided a while ago that I wanted to do a skydive before my 60th birthday and this gave me the prefect excuse as I knew the company would help me reach my goal amount for the charity.

“The scariest part was taking-off as the plane has no doors. Once I jumped the first 5,000 feet were amazing as I was just freefalling. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I want to do a bungee jump next, but my wife thinks I’m mad.”

Chivas Brothers Communications Director Vanessa Wright added: “Our employees are so generous with their time and money when it comes to a good cause, and Donald is certainly no exception to this.

“We’re delighted he was able to raise so much for Erskine, and that we were able to contribute further to this through doubling up. I hope this will be an incentive for even more employees to do their bit for charity.”

Make It Snappy or We’ll See You Later, Urges Ardbeg – Scotch Whisky News

Make it snappy or we’ll see you later, urges Ardbeg

— An Islay-gator Tale: Iconic Islay whisky distillery “unleashes” its annual Limited Edition…Ardbeg Alligator —

— Previous Limited Edition – Ardbeg Supernova – won Scotch Whisky of the Year title in 2010 —

Bosses at Ardbeg – the iconic whisky distillery on the remote island of Islay – are urging whisky aficionados to snap up their annual Limited Edition Ardbeg Alligator…before it’s too late.

Described as a “whisky with bite”, it is hoped Ardbeg Alligator will go on to emulate the success of last year’s limited edition – Ardbeg Supernova – which not only sold out in record time but also won the coveted Scotch Whisky of the Year award.

On sale from today (September 1 2011), there are a limited number of bottles of Ardbeg Alligator available worldwide. With an RRP of £65 Scottish stockists include Royal Mile Whiskies in Edinburgh and Luvians Bottle Shop in Cupar, Fife. It is also available online at www.ardbeg.com

Ardbeg Alligator is the result of experimentation carried out many years ago by the Distillery and its team headed up by Dr. Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation.

“Alligator Charring” describes the method of charring (or burning) the inside of the oak casks before they are filled with spirit. The burnt wood staves take on the appearance of an alligator’s scales, hence the name. The heart of Alligator is spirit matured in ‘Level 4’ casks – the most intense type of charring you can achieve.

Lumsden said: “Since we bought and restored the Ardbeg Distillery we have undertaken lots of experiments, laying down spirit in different types of casks. This began back in the late 1990s and Alligator is a good example of one experiment that has definitely worked.

“The key for us was to “marry” the intense smoky bacon and charcoal taste of the whisky from these heavily charred casks with the equally intense smoky peaty flavours of hallmark Ardbeg and get the right taste. We are intensely pleased with the results and it would be fair to say that this whisky has bite.”

On the launch Hamish Torrie, Ardbeg Brand Director explained: “It is a limited release and, judging by the reaction of our Ardbeg Committee Members to the few bottles we pre-released in June it will be snapped up very quickly!”

Ardbeg prides itself on being the ‘Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky’. Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts. Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox’.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future and it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction. Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following.

Ardbeg was voted Scotch Whisky of the Year three years in a row (2008-2010) by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

Ardbeg Alligator has been bottled at 51.2% ABV and as with all Ardbegs is non chill-filtered for extra texture and mouth-feel.
