ISLAY FESTIVAL 2012 – LAGAVULIN AND CAOL ILA ANNOUNCE SPECIAL BOTTLINGS – Scotch Whisky News

ISLAY FESTIVAL 2012 – LAGAVULIN AND CAOL ILA ANNOUNCE SPECIAL BOTTLINGS

Two limited edition single-cask individually numbered bottlings of Lagavulin™ and Caol Ila™ Single Malt Scotch Whiskies will be released for the 2012 Islay Festival this weekend, Diageo has announced.

Like previous Festival bottlings, it is anticipated that they will be much in demand from enthusiasts. These bottlings, each a particular variant on the traditional styles of Lagavulin 16 year old (intensely flavoured, smoky-sweet, with seaweed flavours and a huge finish) and Caol Ila 12 year old (fresh, sweetly fruity and smooth-bodied with a sweet-smoky, lingering finish) have always been greeted with acclaim for the quality and interest of the liquids. Often selling out within hours of going on sale, they will be available to personal shoppers at the distilleries only.

Lagavulin Feis 2012 Special Bottling

14-Year Old Lagavulin™
The Lagavulin Festival bottling comes from a Refill Sherry Butt filled in February 1998, selected from Warehouse Number 1 by Iain McArthur, long-time warehouseman at the distillery. It has been bottled at its natural cask strength of 55.1% ABV, in an edition of 654 individually numbered bottles.

Tasters’ comment: “A richly sweet and smoky Lagavulin with some medicinal notes and a subtle perfumed freshness”.

11-year old Caol Ila™
The Caol Ila single cask bottling – hand selected by Billy Stitchell, long-standing distillery manager, whose family connections with Caol Ila distillery go back many generations – has been drawn from a Sherry Butt filled in January 2001. It enjoys a high natural cask strength of 60.4% ABV, in an edition of 618 individually numbered bottles.

“Caol Ila’s characteristic maritime oiliness enhanced by a rich and sweet fruity character” has been the reaction from some expert tasters.

Caol Ila Feis 2012 Special Bottling

Sale conditions
The Lagavulin Festival bottling will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the distillery, starting on the distillery’s open day, Saturday 26 May. The Caol Ila bottling will be sold with effect from Monday 28 May which is the Caol Ila open day.

Both bottlings are priced at £85 UK RRP per bottle.

During the Festival, a series of special events will be held at both Lagavulin and Caol Ila distilleries, including tastings with the distillery manager and warehouse demonstrations. There will be also be tours of the Port Ellen Maltings.

We already have the world-renowned Snow Patrol playing right here at the distillery. Now we have also have a brilliant line-up of critically acclaimed artists from Ireland, the UK and America that will make ‘Bushmills Live’ a truly landmark event.

“The festival will be a unique occasion and will bring the best of handmade music and the best of handmade Irish whiskey together under one roof – it’s going to be brilliant!”

Snow Patrol’s performance at ‘Bushmills Live’ will go some way to help establish a legacy for new music in Northern Ireland with their fee being donated in full to the Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast, which was co-founded by lead singer Gary Lightbody to help to support up-and-coming local musicians.

SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE WHISKY AWARDS – WINNERS ANNOUNCED – Scotch Whisky News

SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE WHISKY AWARDS – WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The Glenlivet walked away with two of the top honours at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Awards 2012. The Glenlivet 12 Years Old picked up the prize in the ’12 Years Old and Under’ category and The Glenlivet 15 Years Old (French Oak) came first in the ’13 to 20 Year Old’ class. The ‘Over 20 Year Old’ category was won by Knockando 25 Years Old (2011 Special Reserve).

The finals of the Awards took place at The Macallan Distillery on the opening night of the Festival (Thursday, 3rd May) and were presented by Festival Chairman Jim Royan. The winners are chosen by the consumer at this final stage making these Awards unique in the world of malt whisky awards.

The criteria for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards are that all entrants should be single Speyside malts, proprietary bottlings only and must be ‘generally’ and ‘commercially’ available. Fifty-six of Speyside’s finest malts battled it out at a blind tasting earlier in the year, with six progressing through to the final round of blind tasting in the three categories.

Commenting on his two wins, Alan Winchester, The Glenlivet Master Distiller said: “There is no better accolade for your whisky than the vote of the consumer. That is why we value winning any award at the Speyside Festival so highly, voted for by festival goers from all over the world. For The Glenlivet to win two such awards this year is a bonus and a testament to the work by many of my colleagues over the last 12 and 15 years that it took to make those whiskies. I think George Smith would have been proud!”

Jim Royan added: “We have had one of the most successful Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festivals ever this year. Thousands of whisky enthusiasts from around the world descended on Speyside to taste our whiskies, tour our distilleries and meet with other like-minded connoisseurs and experts of many different nationalities.

“It’s a unique Festival and the Whisky Awards allow us to showcase some of the finest malt whiskies in the world to a very discerning audience.”

WINNING WHISKIES – TASTING NOTES

THE GLENLIVET 12 YEAR OLD
With a bright and lively gold colour, this expression has an exquisite delicacy of summer-like fragrances with interlacing floral and fruity aromas. A silky feel flows on the tongue, with honeyed floral notes on the palate combined with smooth and sweet fruit hints of white peaches and pears and poached vanilla syrup. Marzipan and fresh hazelnuts are revealed in the finish, followed by a gentle spiciness of grated ginger.

THE GLENLIVET 15 YEAR OLD FRENCH OAK RESERVE
The Glenlivet 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve is a unique, characterful expression of The Glenlivet. The brand’s signature fruit and floral notes interplay with the rich, spicy flavours derived from selected new French Limousin Oak casks. On the nose, this expression is creamy and rich with resinous fragrances that swirl up before melting into a citrus fruit salad bowl. Then, the bouquet opens on buttery notes with a dry spicy echo and a touch of liquorice resonating in the back. The palate is round, sweet, incredibly smooth and velvety, with wood entirely integrated but present all the way, sweetly enveloping fruity and nutty flavours in an oaky shell. The finish lingers with traces of toasted hazelnuts and lightly smoked almonds.

KNOCKANDO 25 YEAR OLD
This limited-edition 25 year old expression, distilled in 1985 (4,500 numbered bottles only), has spent its life in first fill ex-sherry European Oak casks. An intriguing nose, rich and immediate, with no prickle, and redolent of dry Christmas cake, gives way in the mouth to a sweet start (fresh, ripe grapes and citrus pith), then immediately drying, with distant smoke. Masses of dry cocoa follow, then sweeter, with aged plum pudding. The finish is long and warming: late, winey notes accompanying drying tannins, and giving way to soft caramel and cleansing tart red fruit.

Speyside’s smallest whisky distillery, Benromach has another duo of top awards to celebrate.

Two of its Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, Benromach Peat Smoke and Organic, has won a gold and silver medal respectively in the Scotch Whisky Masters 2012 competition.

The Scotch Whisky Masters is said to be one of the most respected competitions in the industry, attracting entries from leading distilleries from around the world. The awards are decided by independent, expert judging panels after an extensive and rigorous blind tasting process.

David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, commented: “It’s wonderful to see Benromach Peat Smoke and Benromach Organic honoured by such a prestigious competition. The win is a true testament to the hard work of the Benromach Distillery craftsmen. Their skills and dedication

that go into the making of our whiskies is reflected in the medals won.”

Benromach Peat Smoke is full bodied, intense and challenging. It has a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Organic was launched in 2006 as the world’s first bottled Single Malt to be fully certified as organic. The whisky is matured in virgin

American oak casks from environmentally managed forests which has added a unique robustness and depth which complements the traditional Benromach spirit.

Their flagship Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Benromach 10 Years Old was awarded gold at the 2011 Great Taste Awards and in

November 2011 it gained gold at TheFiftyBest.com awards in New York.

Non-Profit Organizations Raised More Than $150,000 with Help from the Buffalo Trace Millennium Barrel – American Whiskey News

Non-Profit Organizations Raised More Than $150,000 with Help from the Buffalo Trace Millennium Barrel

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (May, 2012) – More than $150,000 was raised for various charities across the country with help from Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The Millennium Barrel Bourbon was the last bourbon barrel of the twentieth century filled on December 31, 1999 by Buffalo Trace Distillery and set to age in the Distillery’s warehouse V, the world’s only bonded single barrel aging warehouse.

In June of 2011, the company bottled this single barrel of whiskey, which yielded 174 handwritten and individually numbered bottles. Each Millennium Barrel bottle was packaged in a numbered hardwood showcase box that includes a piece of the historic barrel’s charred oak stave. Buffalo Trace Distillery then offered all 174 bottles to non-profit organizations wishing to raise funds for their charity.

Altogether, $152,557 dollars were raised for needy organizations all the way from New York to California. Organizations supporting child care, senior care, Red Cross, the Ronald McDonald House, Humane Societies, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Wildlife Centers, and many more were able to benefit from the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A complete list of charities is available online at www.buffalotracemillennium.com

Some of the top fundraising organizations found resourceful ways to make the most of their piece of history. The Indiana State University Foundation, based in Terre Haute, was the top fundraiser with $7,000 raised. To do this, they got creative with a trip to Kentucky, tour of bourbon country, and visit to Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort. At the end of their evening, their Buffalo Trace tour guide drew the winning name for the Millennium Barrel bottle. The group consisted of alumni and friends of Indiana State University. The cost per participant covered the travel and expenses and entry into the drawing for the Millennium Barrel bottle.

The Preble County Historical Society in Ohio raised $4,100 by offering an exclusive whiskey tasting, followed by a first-class dinner.

“We’re thrilled so many deserving organizations benefited from our Millennium Barrel,” said Kris Comstock, bourbon brand manager. “To help raise over $150,000 for worthwhile causes feels wonderful.”

The caramel and vanilla notes of Maker’s Mark Bourbon (www.makersmark.com ) allow bourbon enthusiasts to enjoy neat, as a marinade or in a delicious cocktail. Please see below for a few delish suggestions.

Fancy Bourbon Punch Recipe by Matt Wallace, Mixologist, Seven Grand

1 liter Maker’s Mark® Bourbon

Peels of 3 lemons and 1 orange
Juice of peeled fruit
1 liter of strong tea (preferably green tea)
250 ml champagne (club soda can be used for a less fancy version)
Freshly grated nutmeg

2.       Brew the tea for about 30 minutes, remove loose tea or tea bags, and allow to cool.

4.       Top with champagne just before serving and stir gently. Top with freshly grated nutmeg and serve.

Maker’s Mark® Kobe Beef Burger Recipe by Hiassam and Ali Beydoun, Owners and Chefs, Frites ‘N’ Meats

Prep Time: 4 hours.  Cook Time: 3 hours. Level: Easy. Serves 4
4 six-ounce Kobe beef hamburger patties (regular ground beef can be substituted)
½ cup plus 2 teaspoons Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
4 cloves garlic, finely minced
4 pieces plum tomatoes, cut in half lengthwise
2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 large onions, cut in half and thinly sliced with the grain
Salt and black pepper
Extra virgin olive oil
4 soft hamburger buns, brioche preferably

Marinate the burger patties; Place them in a shallow baking dish and pour a ½ cup of Maker’s Mark® Bourbon over the burgers. Sprinkle the patties with ¼ of the minced garlic. Refrigerate for two hours, then flip the patties; sprinkle with another ¼ of the garlic. Refrigerate another two hours. While the burgers are marinating, preheat the oven to 300°F. Place the cut tomato halves on a parchment lined sheet tray, cut side up. Brush the tomatoes lightly with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, the minced thyme, and the remaining minced garlic. Place in the oven and allow the tomatoes to slow roast for about 1½-2 hours until they are slightly dehydrated and begin to color. Once the tomatoes have cooled, sprinkle 1 teaspoon of Maker’s Mark® Bourbon over the tomatoes. Refrigerate until needed.  While the tomatoes are cooking, caramelize the onions. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil and onions to the pan. Season the onions with salt and cook until they begin to soften, stirring often, about 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 15 minutes more until they begin to break down more and color slightly. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for roughly 2 hours, or until the onions caramelize deep golden brown. Add water to the pan as necessary if the onions begin to stick to the pan. Once the onions are cooked, transfer to a small container and stir in 1 teaspoon of Maker’s Mark® Bourbon. Refrigerate until needed. Heat the grill, grill pan, or griddle to high heat. Remove the burgers from the marinade, lightly brush both sides with olive oil, and season well with salt and pepper. Cook your burgers to desired doneness. To assemble, lightly toast bun if desired. Add the burger patty and top with caramelized onions and two pieces of tomatoes. Enjoy!

*Note: The owners of the Frites N’Meats food truck in New York City, Hiassam and Ali Beydoun, developed this wonderful bourbon-marinated Kobe burger, which is not only delicious, but a leading example of how Maker’s Mark® Bourbon can be utilized in the most unexpected of places.

LAPHROAIG UNVEILS DIAMOND JUBILLEE COMMEMORATIVE EDITION – Scotch Whisky News

LAPHROAIG UNVEILS DIAMOND JUBILLEE COMMEMORATIVE EDITION

To celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 60th year on the throne, Islay single malt whisky Laphroaig, is launching a special Diamond Jubilee commemorative edition. Bearing Prince Charles’ Royal Warrant, the 3,000 Jubilee cartons and bottles are set to become collector’s items. Laphroaig has also pledged to make a donation of £3000 to The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST).

Each limited edition carton will display that it is only one of three thousand in existence and will contain the Double Gold Medal * winning Laphroaig 18 Year Old single malt (48% abv). Bright gold in colour, the Laphroaig 18 Year Old offers a toffee sweet flavour, accompanied by its trademark peat smoke taste.

Laphroaig’s Diamond Jubilee bottling is especially fitting given their Royal Warrant, appointed personally by HRH Prince Charles when he visited the distillery in 1994. He also returned again in 2008 as part of his own 60th birthday celebrations.

Distillery manager John Campbell said; “With Laphroaig’s royal connection to HRH Prince Charles, and as our most famous patron, we thought it only right to create a special pack to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne. As proud bearers of a royal warrant Laphroaig is delighted that our 18 Year Old has become part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in its beautifully designed, premium Jubilee packaging.”

Reinforcing its special royal connections, Laphroaig is donating £3,000 to QEST. The charitable arm of the Royal Warrant Holders Association, the funds will go towards awarding craftsmen throughout Britain to help them further their careers, celebrating the excellence of British Craftsmanship as symbolised by the Royal Warrant of Appointment.

The 3,000 bottles are available to buy in the UK only from June in selected whisky specialists and retailers (RRP £77).

Laphroaig 18 Year Old Tasting Notes

Colour: Bright gold

Nose: At bottling strength, a soft toffee sweet, faintly spicy flavour counterbalances the trace of delicate phenols and fruit. There is an all-encompassing smoothness when these are all brought together. Adding a touch of water allows the seaweed and salt to come through but not enough to overpower the vanilla and honey sweetness with just a trace of new mown hay and peat at the finish.

Body: An intense depth that is exceptionally balanced and warming.

Taste: An instant warming tang of smoke that fades into smooth floral scents and blends seamlessly into an oaky nuttiness and leaves a lasting sweetness on the taste. With a touch of water the peaty warmth fills the mouth but does not overshadow the sweet chocolate smoothness. This is balanced by the rich toffee taste and slowly fades into a delicate hint of heather and peat smoke.

Finish: Full bodied, long with a luxurious oily smoothness.

*2011 SF World Spirits Competition

Laphroaig has won an incredible array of awards at the biggest spirit competitions in the world – most recently taking double Gold medals for 10 Year Old, Cask Strength, 18 Year Old and Gold medal for Quarter Cask at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2011. Unmistakably peat-smoke flavours are delivered by burning local Islay peat, containing unique traces of seaweed and heather. One of only a few distilleries that still uses traditional malting floors and dries and infuses its own malt with the thick blue smoke from old peat-fired kilns. Laphroaig has a strong presence online through the Friends of Laphroaig, recently breaking through the 500,000 FOL barrier and the brand is frequently the subject of blogs. It has recently topped the first ever Whisky 100 Brand Index (www.mepath.com) which is an online survey designed to track positive words associated with whisky brands. Laphroaig has an outstanding range from the classic 10 Year Old through to the lovingly created 25 Year Old – Full range, 10 Year Old, Quarter Cask, Triple Wood, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old.
