The Whisky Show 2012 Sydney Australia – Whisky News

The Whisky Show 2012 was recently held in Sydney and attracted over 1000 attendees making it the biggest whisky event in Australia.

“We wanted to create something big that would have appeal to both exhibitors and attendees and I think we achieved that”,says Larry Aronson, director of World of Whisky the event organiser. “it was tough convincing distributors to part with budget in these difficult times, but we did it and frankly the results were amazing”.”All the major players were there as well as most the smaller distributors. I am particularly pleased with the presence of the Australian Distilleries, they were completely swamped by attendees wanting to know more about home grown whiskies”. There were over 150 whiskies to try over the two days and purchases could be made at discounted prices.

Most exhibitors have confirmed their attendance for next year’s show and the few who did not attend this year have already expressed an interest for 2013.

” We are already looking at ways of making it even bigger and better for next year”, Aronson said.

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY RELEASES GIANT FRENCH OAK BARREL EXPERIMENTS – American Whiskey News

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY RELEASES GIANT FRENCH OAK BARREL EXPERIMENTS

Whiskey aged for 19 years and 23 years!

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Aug. 9, 2012) There’s been much discussion and experimentation with aging whiskey in small barrels, but what about experimenting with large barrels? More than two decades ago, Buffalo Trace Distillery set out to do just that. American whiskey typically ages in 53 gallon oak barrels, but this whiskey matured in 135 gallon French oak barrels, one for 19 years and one for 23 years. Both barrels were filled with Buffalo Trace rye bourbon mash recipe #2, aged on the ground floor of Warehouse K, chill filtered and bottled at 90 proof. The giant barrels were given a #3 char, which is different from Buffalo Trace’s typical #4 char.

One important observation from this experiment was the evaporation rate was much lower for the larger barrels than the typical 53 gallon barrel. Other details on each are as follows:

19 Year Old Giant French Oak Barrel – This 135 gallon barrel was filled on January 28, 1993 and was bottled June 28, 2012. It came off the still at 135 proof and was entered into the barrel at 129.8 proof. The evaporation rate on this barrel was 34.8%, which is considerably lower than a typical 53 gallon barrel, which averages 55-60% evaporation for the same time frame. The flavor is clean and well rounded. The taste is sweeter than expected with caramel and butterscotch notes followed by an oaky finish

23 Year Old Giant French Oak Barrel – This giant barrel was also 135 gallons, filled on May 17, 1989 and bottled on June 27, 2012. The whiskey entered into the barrel at 130 proof and the evaporation rate was lower at 46.8% than a typical sized 23 year-old barrel. After 23 years, the flavor of this whiskey is complex and full bodied with notes of sassafras, caramel, birch, and tea berry.

“Both of these barrels yielded pleasant tasting whiskeys, and we were surprised about the evaporation rate being so low. Evidently the large size helped retain more of the whiskey while also imparting a well-rounded and full bodied flavor,” said Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley.

These giant barrels are part of the more than 1,500 experimental barrels of whiskey aging in the warehouses of Buffalo Trace Distillery. Each of these barrels has unique characteristics that differentiate it from all others. Some examples of these experiments include unique mash bills, type of wood and barrel toasts. In order to further increase the scope, flexibility and range of the experimental program, an entire micro distillery, named The Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. “OFC” Micro Distillery, complete with cookers, fermenting tanks, and a state-of-the-art micro still has been constructed within Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The Experimental Collection will be packaged in 375ml bottles. Each label will include all the pertinent information unique to that barrel of whiskey. These whiskeys will retail for approximately $46.35 each. These rare experimental bottles should be available in September. For more information on the Experimental Collection or the other products of Buffalo Trace Distillery, please contact Kris Comstock at kcomstock@buffalotrace.com

BOWMORE UNVEILS TWO RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL LIMITED EDITIONS – Scotch Whisky News

BOWMORE UNVEILS TWO RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL LIMITED EDITIONS

The new release from Bowmore’s celebrated 1964 compendium, and the Bowmore 1985 from the acclaimed 1980s Vintage Series

Bowmore, Islay’s first Single Malt distillery, is releasing two prized limited editions: Bowmore 1964 and Bowmore 1985. Handcrafted and nurtured by the Distillery Manager, only 72 bottles of the 1964 and 747 bottles of the 1985 exist globally. Priced at £8,000 and £300 respectively, these are valued collectibles for any whisky connoisseur and enthusiast.

Like all Bowmore whiskies, these two remarkable expressions started life with the very finest ingredients: the purest water drawn from the peat-laden Laggan River, the finest barley from the Scottish Borders, and nature’s miracle worker – yeast. With rich peat, sea salt tang, seaweed infused breeze and a dedicated team of craftsmen, each component has helped shape these magical Single Malts.

BOWMORE 1964

The latest exclusive from Bowmore is a Fino Sherry cask finished expression that encapsulates all of its island home in a bottle. Widely regarded as one of the best years in Bowmore’s production history, this rare expression follows in the footsteps of the sought-after Bowmore 1964 Trilogy. Beginning in 2007 and ending in 2009, the Trilogy was the first of the 1964 compendium to be released, and with just a few hundred bottles ever produced, it still stands as one of the most prized collections in the world.

With such an imposing legacy, the Bowmore 1964 has certainly lived up to its predecessor; this lovingly handcrafted liquid is truly exceptional and extremely complex. This Bowmore 1964 encapsulates the fresh, crisp and cooling coastal atmosphere of Islay. Aged for nearly half a century, the whisky’s home was a specially selected North American bourbon cask followed by a Fino Sherry cask, during which the characteristics of the whisky have evolved and refined to create a teasingly complex and elegant balance, with the trademark top note of fresh, sweet, tropical fruits – a phenomenon and mystery that super-aged Bowmores have become famous for. Coupled with gentle sea-salt, lengthening and cooling the palate, the whisky leaves a beautifully elegantfinish.

Bowmore commissioned Brodie Nairn and Nichola Burns, two of Scotland’s if not the world’s foremost glass artists, to design a striking vessel worthy of this wonderful malt. Each bottle has been hand-blown and painstakingly sculpted using molten glass, with a unique design that takes inspiration from the waves of Islay’s Loch Indaal.

Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh’s leading jewellers and Warrant Holder to the Queen, provided the finishing touches. Using time-honoured techniques, the skilled team of silversmiths, engravers and polishers created the solid silver neck collars and stoppers that complete every bottle of Bowmore 1964. Each of these works of art has been meticulously hand-engraved with the spirit information and bears both the Hamilton &Inches Sponsor mark and Edinburgh hallmark.

Reflecting its natural roots, a rustic crate made from Scottish sourced oak provides the perfect casing forthis homage to Islay.

David Wilson, Sales and Marketing Director at Morrison Bowmore, comments: “We’re proud to present what is 46 years of craftsmanship and Islay’s essence in a bottle. Every Bowmore limited edition bottling is special, but the ever-dwindling stock from the 1960s means that the Bowmore 1964 is truly exceptional and rare.”

TASTING NOTES

On the nose, discover ripe peach water, floral rose water and just a wisp of smoking barley. A sip reveals lusciously ripe peaches, but balanced by a more acidic note – something akin to juicy blood oranges or sharp pink grapefruit. Next comes wood with coconut creams and sweetness, leading to a finish of gentle peat fires glowing in the dusk.

Bowmore 1964 (RRP £8,000) 42.9% ABV, will be available from specialist whisky retailers from July 2012.

BOWMORE 1985

Also launching this year is the Bowmore 1985 Vintage, which follows in the footsteps of the previous 1980s Vintage series. Created from a unique combination of hand-selected sherry and bourbon casks, the expression is remarkably rich and fruity, balanced with the trademark Bowmore sea -salt tang, and possesses more smoke and depth than the earlier Vintage releases. This unique edition is a classic Bowmore; smoke, fresh Atlantic sea-salt and layers of fruit complexity.

Presented in a wooden gift box with a ‘weather-beaten’ brown leather strap and copper buckle, each bottle is also accompanied by a hand-signed and numbered certificate by the Bowmore Distillery Manager, Eddie MacAffer.

Bowmore 1985 (RRP £300) 52.3% ABV, will be available from specialist whisky retailers from July 2012.

Bowmore

The best-balanced Islay Single Malt whisky is the perfect reward after your outdoor experience.

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest Distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles, which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; we carefully smoke our malt and use skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Bowmore’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our Single Malts. We’re one of only a few distilleries anywhere which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery. For our whiskies we draw water from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones, and it’s the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of our spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults is where most of our whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the Vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours.

It’s this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore Single Malt Whiskies.

Islay

Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, and is also known as “The Queen of the Hebrides.” Its mild climate and rich peaty soil make it ideal for creating whisky, and despite having a population of not much more than 3,000, it’s home to no fewer than eight distilleries.

Isle of Arran The Devil’s Punch Bowl “No Idle Hands But It’s The Devil’s Work” – Scotch Whisky News

No Idle Hands But It’s The Devil’s Work

Isle of Arran Distillery, the award-winning independent Scotch whisky producer, has just unveiled its latest offering, a devilish delight.

This week 6,660 bottles of the ‘Devil’s Punch Bowl’ will appear across the globe, and it is expected to cause quite a stir as a menacing image of a red and black devil haunts the packaging. 600 750ml bottles just hit United States soil.

Never one to shy away from controversy, Arran Distillery’s provocative new release is named after the glacial hollow Coire na Ciche on Arran, which evokes a very sinister atmosphere and is only accessible by boggy footpaths.

James ‘Lucifer’ MacTaggart, the Master Distiller behind the new whisky, went to hell and back to conjure up this unique spirit. He said: “I’m well practiced in the dark arts of selecting devilishly good casks and was drawn to a number of vintage releases for this limited edition bottling. The spirit has dark, swirling colours with a seductive rich flavour and a smoky edge. They say the devil has all the best tunes, but here he has the best whisky too.”

The Devil’s Punch Bowl is also the first whisky from Arran Distillery to combine peated and un-peated casks and with a demonic alcohol level of 52.3% ABV.

Drawn from 24 different Arran casks, including Sherry Butts, the liquid presents a smooth and refined appearance that masks a complex and fiery character.

Euan Mitchell, Managing Director, said: “We’ve created this whisky for people who are willing to sample the unconventional in the pursuit of pleasure.

“With all of our new launches we always try to offer the consumer a high end alternative with a personality and character that is not for everyone.”

Around the world people are captivated by the spirit of the product – an agent in Holland has ordered 666 bottles. Other, more conservative, markets may seek to resist the seductive temptation offered by this devilish proposition.

Arran Distillery is now a multi-award winning distillery and has won acclaim for its 14 Year Old, 10 Year Old malts as well as many others.

Euan continued: “The Devil’s Punch Bowl is a different offering to our other whiskies, both in taste and appearance. We produce our spirit in an idyllic location, but we’ve never rested on our laurels and used traditional imagery to sell our single malts. Consumers like our products for a reason – because they’re quality, individual and spirited expressions of single malt, which stand out in a crowded market.”

Notes:

RRP is $129.99 for a 750ml bottle.
