“We are a small distillery, but we have big dreams. Our goal from day one has been to distill the best whiskey in the world, and Wizards of Whisky has been a great competition to be part of,” said Darek Bell.

Distillery owners Darek Bell, Andrew Webber, and Amy Lee Bell are thrilled. The American craft whiskey field has gotten incredibly competitive, with 500 new distilleries launching this year according to the American Distilling Institute’s president Bill Owens, making this win even sweeter for 6 year old Corsair. Winning against so many competitors is a real honor for the owners.

“It is exciting to compete in the International competitions, and compete with the best whiskeys in the world in front of top International judges and whiskey experts,” said cofounder Andrew Webber. Wizards of Whisky is the brainchild of whisky author, judge, and expert Dominic Roskrow.

2014 has started off with a bang for Corsair. Corsair Quinoa whiskey won an “Innovator of the Year” award for Whisky Magazine, the second innovator award for Corsair Distillery.

Corsair does not source its whiskey from large distillers, but hand distills each batch in small pot stills.

Think You Know Your Whisky? Aberlour Shows What Lies behind the Crafting of its Rich and Complex Single Malt – Scotch Whisky News

Think You Know Your Whisky? Aberlour Shows What Lies behind the Crafting of its Rich and Complex Single Malt

A world-first series of super-macro images of whisky unveil the enigma behind the expert craft and natural beauty of the premium single malt, Aberlour.

The images have been taken by David Maitland, one of the world’s foremost nature photographers. Aberlour commissioned him to chart the journey of the whisky’s creation taking in microscopic views of the rock, water and wood used in the whisky-making process, such as the granite mountain from where the distillery takes its spring water, the oak staves from specially selected casks in which the whisky is matured, and finally uncovering never-before-seen glimpses of the single malt itself.

The photography uses a variety of techniques to capture some of the natural elements that contribute to the unique flavour of this single malt Scotch, from a glimpse inside each grain of barley to the actual rings from an oak cask and the crystalline structure of the final spirit itself.

The six images show:

• Pink mountain granite from Ben Rinnes: water runs down Ben Rinnes over this impervious material which maintains the water’s purity and softness before it rises in springs close to the distillery

• Spring water, soft and fresh, rising in the Birkenbush Wood and exclusively used for making the Aberlour single malt range• Malted Barley: specially prepared to provide the key sugars from which the whisky to be distilled – the platform for its unique flavour

• Sherry cask: special oak casks sourced from Spain in which the spirit makes its transformation in to Scotch whisky; , made from European oak whose open grain has an unique influence during the years of maturation

• The rich and sweet ‘Aberlour 12-year-old’ award winning single malt

• A’bunadh: Aberlour’s expertly hand-crafted and uncompromising cask strength single malt

Dr Maitland, a European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, said: “I was asked to discover how all the different elements help craft Aberlour. The positioning of the distillery at the foot of Ben Rinnes, and surrounded by the natural water springs, plays a vital part in the creation of each bottle of single malt, as do the casks in which the whisky is aged. Having the chance to photograph this journey was a rare privilege.”

Aberlour single malt dates back to James Fleming, a local banker and philanthropist who founded the distillery in 1879. The whisky was crafted with James Fleming’s motto, ‘let the deed show’ in mind, which remains true today as the distillery allows unique depth of flavour to do the talking.

“Super macro photography can reveal many surprises. The crystal structures in the 12-year-old and A’bunadh were simply beautiful and frequently appeared to echo the unique and subtle characters of each whisky.” added David Maitland.

Aberlour’s Brand Director, Nikki Burgess, said: “Even for its distillers, single malt retains some mysteries. David’s photos have shown beyond the glass and cask and allowed us an insight into the natural elements and distillers’ craft which are vital to the creation of this enigmatic single malt. The photography has brilliantly captured the coming together of the natural elements and the expert craftsmanship of our distillers, while also maintaining the enigma behind the award-winning taste of Aberlour.”

The photographs can be viewed on the Aberlour website – www.aberlour.com –

Pink Granite – Award winning photographer, David Maitland, has developed a series of intriguing photographs providing a glimpse of the enigma of Aberlour whisky through its mineral wonder. He started his journey of discovery at Ben Rinnes, which sits behind the distillery and provides a sure supply of soft spring water draining over the pink granite. This picture shows the pink granite from Ben Rinnes at 200x magnification.

Water – Award winning photographer, David Maitland, has developed a series of intriguing photographs providing a peek into the enigma of Aberlour whisky through its mineral wonder. He captured the crystal-clear spring water from the Birkenbush Spring. Soft and pure, it is perfect for the development of a wide range of flavours which is why it is used to create Aberlour’s range of fine single malts.

Barley – Award winning photographer, David Maitland, has developed a series of intriguing photographs providing a glimpse of the enigma of Aberlour whisky through its craft and ingredients. He captured the barley at 400x magnification, showing the amyoplasts (starch grains), which deliver the sweetness of Aberlour, a whisky of exceptional quality – clean, crisp and fruity with striking depth.

Sherry Cask – Award winning photographer, David Maitland, has developed a series of intriguing photographs providing a glimpse of the enigma of Aberlour whisky through its craft and ingredients. He shows the prized ex-Oloroso sherry cask which lends the velvety, clean and crisp flavour to the Aberlour range of single malts. This image was captured at 400x magnification.

12 Year Old – Award winning photographer, David Maitland, has developed a series of intriguing photographs providing a glimpse of the enigma of Aberlour whisky through its components and craft. Here, Aberlour’s rich and velvety 12-year-old incarnation reveals a smooth string of crystals which is reflected in its velvety finish. The image was captured at 400x magnification.

A’ bunadh – Award winning photographer, David Maitland, has developed a series of intriguing photographs providing a glimpse of the enigma of Aberlour whisky through its components and craft. At 200x magnification this photograph of Aberlour’s hand-crafted A’bunadh shows crystals bursting with sweet flavour originating from the specially selected ex-sherry casks. Like each batch of A’bunadh, this image is unique, as this was captured just as the crystal began to grow.

About the photographs:

Pink Granite: Beautiful Pink Granite was collected from Ben Rinnes (the mountain is formed from different granites) – the spring water used for the Aberlour flows down from the mountain and retains a unique softness thanks to the granite base over which it flows. The granite was cut into thin sections just 30 millionths of a meter (30 μm) thin so that the rock becomes transparent. The granite is composed mainly of alkali feldspar and quartz with intermixed brown biotite. There also are tiny flecks (inclusions) of all manner of trace elements. Here, all elements combine to form a miniature landscape. The image was taken using crossed polarized light at a magnification of 200x.

Water: The water was captured at 400x magnification using differential interference contrast to get the colours. David used polarized light, which allows us to see the optical properties specific to the water and reveals detailed information concerning the structure and its composition. The colours in the water are a result of the way the water interacts with the polarized light. Due to the varying refractive indices, the water appears multi-coloured. The polarized light can be further enhanced using sophisticated polarizing techniques such as Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) which also produces a sense of depth and a 3-D quality. David captured the water images by freezing the water and photographing it melting under the microscope – the colour background is bent by the melting water into the interesting forms and shapes in the picture

Barley: The barley grain is mostly starch which is stored as individual grains (amyloplasts). These amyoplasts are grains within the grain, which act as a fermenter, to make the whisky’s alcohol, as well as give its depth of flavour. These tiny structures – the smallest grains are about 2 millionths of a meter (μm) in diameter, while the largest are about 20 μm. The picture is taken at 400x magnification using differential interference contrast (DIC) lighting techniques.

Cask: All Aberlour single malts display the influence of maturation in ex-Spanish Oloroso Sherry Butts which are constructed from mature European or “Spanish” Oak trees, Quercus petraea petraea, (formally Q. sessilis). A thin transverse section or slice of oak (20 millionths of a meter, 20 μm thick) shows an intricate pattern of tracheids (large rings through which the tree draws water) and lignin-strengthened parenchyma wood cells within the heartwood of the oak. During the whisky’s maturation process within the oak cask, the alcohol works on heartwood components (lignin, hemicellulose and tannin amongst others) to produce the complex caramel and aromatic flavours, colour, and fragrances unique to Aberlour whisky. The image was made at 200x magnification using a special form of Interference contrast lighting.

Aberlour’s, 12 Year Old: For the 12 Year Old, David evaporated a large volume of this beautiful whisky (such a waste!) which leaves behind a super-concentrated solution of dissolved complex natural elements which originated from the different casks in which the whisky was matured. This blend of natural elements can sometimes be made to crystalize in remarkable and unique patterns. Here, Aberlour’s 12 Year double cask matured whisky has produced a wonderful feather-like crystal pattern. This photograph was captured at 400x magnification using differential interference contrast (DIC) lighting techniques.

A’bunadh: The hand-crafted and small scale produced Aberlour Whisky was photographed after evaporating a large volume of A’bunadh, which left behind a super-concentrated solution of dissolved natural elements which originated from the cask in which the whisky was matured. Certain elements within this can sometimes be made to crystalize in remarkable and unique patterns. Elements of Gallic Acid (a product from Tannin in the oak cask) have been captured forming an exquisite crystal tree. This photograph was captured at 200x magnification using differential interference contrast (DIC) lighting techniques.

Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. Releases 2004 Edition of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon

The 19th Annual Edition of the Award-Winning Vintage-Dated Bourbon Begins Shipping to Trade

LOUISVILLE, KY – The latest vintage of the highly anticipated Evan Williams Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, the 2004 edition, is now shipping to select retailers and on premise operators nationwide.

Heaven Hill Distilleries, the nation’s largest family-owned and operated independent spirits producer and the world’s second-largest holder of aging Bourbon, annually releases the newest edition in the series that goes back 19 years and has in that time become one of the most highly anticipated American Whiskey releases of the year.

The world-renowned Single Barrel Bourbon has garnered many prestigious awards since it was introduced in 1994. These include “Spirit of the Year – American Whiskey” from Food & Wine Magazine; “Domestic Whiskey of the Year” from Whisky Advocate; and “Whiskey of the Year” from The Spirit Journal, the first Bourbon upon which the publication bestowed this prestigious title. And just last year, Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon was named to The Spirit Journal “Hall of Fame,” just the eighth spirit to ever receive this honor.

“As many Bourbon fans know, we try to achieve a particular taste or flavor profile with every year’s vintage of Evan Williams Single Barrel, and then we select barrels that fit with that profile,” Heaven Hill’s legendary 6th generation Master Distiller Parker Beam observed. “For this 2004 vintage, we went with a character that is maybe a bit more assertive and bold than in years past, as consumer tastes seem to be leaning more toward robust whiskeys. We therefore have selected barrels that sit a bit higher up in the warehouses where the temperature gradients over the 9 or 10 years of aging were a bit more extreme.”

As with the previous 18 vintages, many of which are now highly sought after collector’s items, each bottle of the 2004 edition of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon is marked with the exact date that it was placed in oak and bottled, in addition to the exact serial number of the single barrel from which it was drawn.

The 86.6 proof Bourbon is matured in natural open-rick warehouses under the careful supervision of Heaven Hill’s Master Distillers, who monitor the progress of each year’s vintage to ensure it maintains its intended flavor profile and superb quality. The 2004 Vintage is available nationally at an average retail price of $26.99 for a 750 ml bottle, making it a multiple “Best Buy” award winner as well.

Founded in 1934, Bardstown, KY-based Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. (www.heavenhill.com) is the nation’s largest independent, family-owned and operated spirits producer and marketer and the world’s second-largest holder of Kentucky Bourbon. Heaven Hill’s diversified portfolio of brands includes Evan Williams Bourbon; Burnett’s Vodkas and Gin; HPNOTIQ and HPNOTIQ Harmonie Liqueurs; Admiral Nelson’s and Blackheart Rums; The Christian Brothers Brandies; PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur; Lunazul Tequila and Rittenhouse Rye Whisky. Glenmorangie Launches Latest Stage in Whisky Industry World First – Scotch Whisky News

AA Glenmorangie Cask Masters Taghta - the winning 'Two Stories' design

Glenmorangie Launches Latest Stage in Whisky Industry World First

Renowned photographer will create iconic launch photography inspired by images submitted by Glenmorangie fans worldwide

In a whisky industry world first, single malt enthusiasts will get the chance to help design the iconic launch photography for Glenmorangie’s unique crowd managed whisky.

Starting today (Tuesday 21 January), members of the public can upload photographs to three online moodboards accessed at www.glenmorangie.com/caskmasters each with a different theme: Chosen by Many; From Spain to Scotland; Pioneering Innovation.

These three themes relate to the innovative crowd-managed nature of the Cask Masters programme and also to the whisky itself, Taghta, which has been extra matured in Manzanilla sherry butts.

World-renowned photographer Kevin Mackintosh will then create three stunning public-inspired images which will be put to an online vote. The result will be used in promotional shots for the new whisky and form the centrepiece of the worldwide marketing campaign.

The public can submit images until 2 February. The photographer then has until 19 February to produce three “beauty shots” which will be put to an online vote, ending on 9 March.

Photography is the penultimate stage in Glenmorangie’s world first Cask Masters whisky creation programme which aims to get members of the public involved in helping to shape all elements of a new single malt whisky.

Cask Masters is the brainchild of Glenmorangie’s Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling & Whisky Creation, who is accompanied on each step of the five step process by an expert in each field.

Dr Bill Lumsden commented: “This really is a ground-breaking initiative with whisky aficionados having a genuine say in each step of crafting this exclusive Glenmorangie single malt”.

“The public response has been outstanding and we are really grateful for all the excellent ideas which have gone into inspiring this programme. I’m not surprised though, it’s not everyday you get the chance to create your own whisky.”

Kevin Mackintosh said: “I’m really looking forward to what the Glenmorangie fans across the globe come up with. I usually travel the world seeking inspiration for my photographic compositions but in this case the world is coming to me.”

Cask Masters was launched on 1 March 2013 and will run for 18 months with the new Limited Edition Glenmorangie whisky ready for release in the autumn of 2014.

The whisky was selected when three casks of whisky were put to a public vote earlier this year. The name Taghta, Scots Gaelic for ‘Chosen’, was selected after thousands of suggestions were whittled down to a shortlist of three names, translated by Gaelic expert Dr Aonghas MacCoinnich and put to an online vote.

Whisky fans worldwide then uploaded pictures and design ideas to a special online gallery and three new bottle designs were produced by branding expert Jon Davies. The winner, selected by the public, was “Two Stories” – inspired by imagery from both the provenance of the casks in Southern Spain, and also from the area surrounding the Glenmorangie Distillery, such as the historic Cadboll Stone.

This is the fourth and penultimate stage in the programme, with the final stage being the selection of the worldwide launch venue.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

About Glenmorangie:

Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky originates in the Scottish Highlands where, at the Glenmorangie Distillery, it is distilled in the tallest malt whisky stills in Scotland, expertly matured in the finest oak casks, and perfected by the Men of Tain. The Distillery was founded in 1843 and is renowned as a pioneer in its field uniting tradition with innovation to create ‘unnecessarily well made whiskies’.

About Kevin Mackintosh:

Kevin Mackintosh was born in Africa, but left 15 years ago for the United Kingdom, (where he lives, dividing his time between New York, London and Paris).

While his work expresses a personal ‘universe’ that combines an interest in European cinema, theatre and art, there is something about the largesse of his native country’s landscape and its many cultures which has left indelible marks.

It is there, equally, in the broody sense of nostalgia for a glorious – real or imagined – mythology so evident in his many collaborations with The Bolshoi, Royal Opera and Royal Ballet Companies…shooting film and stills. The work was acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in London for its permanent collection.

He has also completed a series on the New York Philharmonic and a collaboration with ‘Christies’ in its first Worldwide Advertising Campaign. Kevin’s work has been exhibited across the world, both in solo and group exhibitions and published in many photographic journals, and books.

AA The Macallan M Constantine

The Macallan six litre decanter of ‘M’ produced by LALIQUE achieves a New World Record price at US$628,000 / GBP£381,620 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong

Saturday 18th January, Hong Kong: Today saw the sale of a stunning rare 6 litre “Imperiale” version of the highly sought after Macallan M – the world’s most sophisticated single malt whisky, contained within a beautifully designed and meticulously crafted crystal decanter, for US$628,000 / GBP£381,620 at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong.

M represents a masterpiece created from the collaboration between three masters of their crafts; Fabien Baron, Founder and Creative Director of Baron & Baron, Silvio Denz, President and CEO of LALIQUE and Bob Dalgarno, Whisky Maker at The Macallan.

To celebrate the conception of M and its global launch in Hong Kong, four 6-litre Imperiale decanters were specially crafted by LALIQUE for The Macallan. These are the largest decanters ever made by LALIQUE.  Each decanter required the work of 17 craftsmen, including two with the prestigious title, “Meilleur Ouvrier de France”, with each taking over 50 hours to complete.

Of the four, two will be archived by The Macallan and one has been committed to a private collector in Asia.  The fourth, Constantine (named, as are the other three, after Roman emperors), uniquely features the engraved autographs of the three principal creators – LALIQUE/Silvio Denz, Fabien Baron and Bob Dalgarno.  This highly collectable creation was made available as part of the Finest and Rarest Wines and The Macallan auction by Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on Saturday, 18 January 2014.

David Cox of The Macallan commented : We are absolutely delighted at the generosity of the successful bidder of the “M” 6L decanter Constantine in securing such a wonderful contribution to a number of Hong Kong charities and at the same time setting a new world record for The Macallan. It is testimony to the craft, quality and passion underpinning the creation of this great decanter.  It is a very proud moment for us”.

The Macallan is one of the world’s most sought after and collectable whiskies, sitting at the top of the auction index for whiskies and holding the current Guinness World Record™ for the most expensive whisky ever sold at auction, in 2010 in New York, The Macallan 64 years old in LALIQUE Cire Perdue at US$460,000 / GBP£288,000.

Silvio Denz of LALIQUE said, “This new world record at US$628,000 / GBP£381,620 highlights the uniqueness of the decanter and the remarkable quality of The Macallan single malt.  Its creation is a tremendous achievement due to the unprecedented size, weight and completely new shape.  After the Guinness World Record achieved by The Macallan in LALIQUE Cire Perdue in 2010 at Sotheby’s New York, this exceptional figure underscores the interest and value of such extraordinary decanters”.

Robert Sleigh of Sotheby’s Hong Kong, “The Macallan M decanter 6 litre Imperiale brought global interest from bidders  who were attracted by the combination of the unique opportunity and exceptional quality bringing a new world record for single malt whisky as well as benefiting Hong Kong charities.

All net sale proceeds will be donated to a host of local charities in Hong Kong.

Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks business, has today announced plans for a £30million expansion of its Clynelish Distillery in Sutherland, in the North-East of Scotland.

In the latest major milestone in Diageo’s £1billion programme to increase Scotch whisky production, plans have been submitted to Highland Council for the major expansion of Diageo’s most northerly Scotch whisky distillery.

Clynelish Distillery

The Clynelish expansion will take the on-going capital investment by Diageo in the Highland Council region alone to almost £150million, including major expansions at Glen Ord and Teaninich Distilleries and plans to build a new distillery at Alness.

Keith Miller, Diageo Director of Distillation and Maturation, said:

“The plan to expand Clynelish Distillery is another major milestone in Diageo’s £1billion investment to increase Scotch whisky production capacity to help meet the future growth in global demand for our brands.

“Clynelish is a very special distillery, producing spirit which is highly prized for its quality and character and is an important part of our Scotch whisky blending inventory, so this is an important part of our investment programme.”

Clynelish Distillery produces single malt whisky unique in both taste and texture which is highly prized by Diageo’s master blenders for use in world-leading Scotch whisky brands such as Johnnie Walker. Clynelish is also a highly regarded as a single malt whisky in its own right. The distillery is also home to one of Diageo’s 12 distillery visitor centres, welcoming more than 5,000 visitors each year. Clynelish is near the Sutherland town of Brora.

Doubling production capacity

Under the plans submitted, Clynelish Distillery will see the installation of an additional mashtun,  10 new washbacks and six new copper stills. This adds to the 10 washbacks and six stills which the distillery currently has, and will effectively double the production capacity to nine million litres of alcohol per annum, whilst retaining the unique character and quality of the spirit. A bio-energy plant is also planned for the site to provide non-fossil fuel energy to power the distillery.

As part of the planning process Diageo will hold a community engagement session in February to share further details of the Clynelish proposals with the local community.

Diageo announced its £1billion Scotch whisky investment programme in June 2012. As well as the distillery expansions the company is also investing in new warehousing to store the additional spirit, with a major new bonded warehouse site being developed at Cluny in Fife.

Expansion at Glen Ord too

The Clynelish announcement comes as six new copper stills were delivered to the Glen Ord Distillery as part of the £25million expansion plan which is doubling the size of that distillery to over 10million litres per annum. Diageo is also doubling the capacity at the Teaninich Distillery in Alness and is progressing plans to build a new malt whisky distillery and renewable energy plant on land adjacent to Teaninich. In total these projects represent a capital investment of nearly £150million across the Highland Council area
