Maker’s Mark Celebrates Flavor from Nature with the Return of Star Hill Farm Whisky 2026 – American Whiskey News

Maker’s Mark Celebrates Flavor from Nature with the Return of Star Hill Farm Whisky 2026

Brand’s first new mash bill expands to Japan and Duty Free following 2025 debut in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia

LORETTO, Ky., – Maker’s Mark® today announced the highly anticipated second release of Star Hill Farm Whisky, the brand’s first new mash bill and first wheat whisky in 70 years. Awarded World’s Best Wheat Whisky 2026, Star Hill Farm Whisky celebrates the role regenerative agriculture plays to create healthier soil and better flavor. The annual release will be available in Japan and Duty Free this year, as well as in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

“My grandparents built Maker’s Mark on the belief that when we invest in the land, it gives back in flavor,” said Rob Samuels, eighth-generation whisky maker and managing director of Maker’s Mark. “Star Hill Farm Whisky extends that vision by embracing ingredients sourced from regenerative agriculture. As a proud B Corp and Regenified-certified distillery, we’re helping to define leadership in sustainability for the industry, while working to make Star Hill Farm the most endearing, culturally rich and environmentally responsible homeplace in the world.”

While Maker’s Mark has always used the same mash bill to create a consistent and balanced bourbon, Star Hill Farm Whisky evolves each year, revealing how nature impacts flavor. The inaugural release spotlighted soft red winter wheat—the signature grain in Maker’s Mark’s mash bill. The 2026 release introduces hard red and hard white wheat types, demonstrating how grain diversity translates into greater depth of flavor through distillation, maturation and expert blending.

Star Hill Farm 2026 is crafted from two mash bills: one composed entirely of malted wheat, and another of 70% wheat and 30% malted barley. The final blend—27% wheat, 62% malted wheat and 11% malted barley—delivers a darker, more layered aromatic profile, with a rounder structure and amplified fruit notes compared to that of 2025.

“The first release of Star Hill Farm Whisky was bright, approachable and straightforward; this year we’ve dialed up the complexity,” said Dr. Blake Layfield, master distiller at Maker’s Mark. “The 2026 release is a balanced blend of seven and eight-year whiskies bottled at cask strength, evolving from first sip to finish. It opens with aromas of molasses, fig and delicate baking spices, followed by notes of zesty citrus, ripe pear and buttery shortbread, and lingers with a soft cinnamon finish.”

In 2025, Star Hill Farm Whisky became the first to earn Estate Whiskey certification—a designation Star Hill Farm Whisky 2026 will carry from the Estate Whiskey Alliance® (EWA), established by the University of Kentucky to highlight local sourcing and sustainable production, and recognize whiskey produced entirely on the distillery estate, using grains grown on estate-owned or controlled land.*

Star Hill Farm Whisky expanded Maker’s Mark’s ambition to advance regenerative agriculture with last year’s launch of the Maker’s Mark Regenerative Alliance, whose mission is to foster healthier farm ecosystems through education and hands-on support—already helping convert 58,000 acres of conventional farmland to certified regenerative practices. Extending its impact to consumers, the Alliance invites farms, bars and restaurants to adopt regenerative sourcing and operations, and to bring the story to life through menu storytelling and consumer engagement, with more than 14 partners already signed on.

Bottled at 58.2% ABV (116.4 proof), Star Hill Farm Whisky 2026 will be available for a suggested retail price of $100 USD. In the United States, the limited release will be available at select retailers nationwide and at the Maker’s Mark Distillery with a bookable experience that includes a guided tour of Star Hill Farm paired with cocktails highlighting flavor from nature.

ABOUT MAKER’S MARK

Maker’s Mark® is the iconic handmade Kentucky bourbon driven by a vision for better flavor and a better world. In 1953, founders Margie and Bill Samuels, Sr. broke from tradition—burning the family’s 170-year-old recipe to create a bold, balanced bourbon made with soft red winter wheat for signature sweetness and creaminess. From the start, the Samuels went to remarkable lengths to craft uncompromisingly delicious bourbon—a perfectly unreasonable spirit that endures today. Every bottle is still hand-dipped in red wax, every barrel rotated by hand and every decision guided by the brand’s higher purpose.

Staying true to its founders’ vision, Maker’s Mark has expanded its portfolio with award-winning, super-premium expressions, including Maker’s Mark 46, Cask Strength, and Cellar Aged, as well as Private Selection, the brand’s custom barrel program. In 2025, the distillery debuted Star Hill Farm Whisky. Named World’s Best Wheat Whisky and the first to earn Estate Whiskey certification, Star Hill Farm Whisky inspired the Maker’s Mark Regenerative Alliance, a bold commitment to advance regenerative farming beyond its business.

Maker’s Mark is proud to be both B Corp and Regenified Certified – milestones driven by the sustainability leadership at Star Hill Farm, home of the Maker’s Mark Distillery, which strives to be the most endearing, culturally rich and environmentally responsible homeplace in the world.

WORK BEGINS ON NEW SPEYSIDE BISTRO AT COLEBURN DISTILLERY SITE – Scotch Whisky News

WORK BEGINS ON NEW SPEYSIDE BISTRO AT COLEBURN DISTILLERY SITE

The owners of the historic Coleburn Distillery have broken ground this month with plans for first phase of Whisky Resort at Coleburn granted.

Moray Council has approved plans for an on-site bistro at Coleburn Distillery in Longmorn, Elgin, marking a significant milestone in the site’s wider master plan to create a world-class whisky and hospitality resort, anticipated to be the first of its kind globally.

With an opening targeted for late autumn this year, The Kitchery at Coleburn will be housed within the former Piggery building. Once used for livestock, the structure is being thoughtfully reimagined as a contemporary bistro showcasing food and drink rooted in locally sourced Scottish produce. The project carefully adapts the historic building for modern use while preserving its original character.

Developed in collaboration with award-winning design studio Significant Others, the project reflects a multi-million-pound investment in the famous whisky region. It is expected to create 15 direct jobs, alongside additional opportunities across the local economy, particularly in agriculture, logistics, and hospitality.

Gwenda Smits, Director at Coleburn commented:

“This marks the first of many milestones in the development of the wider Coleburn Whisky Resort, The Kitchery is just the start and breaking ground feels like a very special moment.

“Opening the space as an initial introduction to the site establishes it as an integral part of what will be a much larger offering, giving visitors the opportunity to return year-round, follow its progress, and enjoy the food and beverage experience. Central to the overall project is the sense of community and coming together, and we can’t wait to welcome people from both near and far to the new bistro in the heart of Speyside.”

The architectural approach to The Kitchery draws on traditional forms, thoughtfully balanced with contemporary interventions. New glazed façades will create  a warm and inviting arrival, drawing visitors into the space. The building’s elongated form has been used to choreograph a considered customer journey, with each stage offering a distinct and evolving experience, reinforcing a sense of quality and discovery throughout.

The experience will begin with a welcoming bar and retail space. From there, guests will move into a private dining and tasting room, divided by a bespoke stave wall that offers a sense of separation while still feeling connected. Beyond this, the space will open out into a relaxed bistro, with a mix of cosy booths and flexible seating for up to 62 guests. At its heart, a chef’s table-style finishing kitchen will add a touch of theatre, bringing energy and interaction to the dining experience.

Materiality will play a central role in shaping the interior atmosphere. Warm leathers, natural timbers, aged copper, and backlit rippled glass combine to create a rich, layered aesthetic rooted in the spirit of the distillery while delivering a fresh, contemporary feel.

Ruth Hay, Director at Significant Others added:

“It’s an incredibly exciting time for everyone involved. Seeing The Kitchery come to life this year will mark a significant milestone, and we’re looking forward to building on this momentum with the next phases of the masterplan as the wider vision for Coleburn continues to unfold.”

Construction began on the site last month, with the installation of a biomass boiler implemented as part of a broader commitment to sustainability, in collaboration with Reheat.

Neil Harrison, Director at Reheat, commented:

“We’ve been working with the team at Coleburn on how best to underpin their operations with low carbon energy for some years now, and it’s fantastic to see this first practical step being taken on their journey to bring their plans to reality with the installation of a district heating network to meet the heating and hot water needs of multiple buildings on the site.”

“There are many more steps to follow, but their decision to opt for a biomass system underlines their commitment to the local economy, local sourcing, and doing things the right way from the off, plus a project combining listed buildings, district heating, a hospitality setting, and whisky is at the centre of our competence Venn diagram.”

At the end of last year, The Distillery at Coleburn unveiled its first collection of whisky bottlings, the ‘Local Heros’ collection, which brings together exceptional whiskies under a unifying vision, celebrating the makers, custodians, and enthusiasts whose passion continues to connect local heritage with a global whisky community.

The inaugural release introduced three blended malts bottled on-site in Speyside, comprising ‘Sweet Peat’, ‘Big Smoke’, and ‘Sherry Bomb’, each offering a distinct flavour profile.

About Coleburn Distillery:

Coleburn Distillery, located in the heart of Speyside, is being brought back to life as part of a landmark project to create a world-class whisky and hospitality destination. Once a working distillery, Coleburn is now being reinstated as a fully operational site, complete with a new distillery and visitor bistro in the first phase of development.

Future plans include whisky lodges, Pagoda penthouse and bistro, making Coleburn a true destination for whisky lovers and visitors from around the world. At its core, the project is about reviving the Coleburn spirit and offering a premium whisky experience rooted in heritage, craft, and place.

TOMINTOUL DISTILLERY BACKS VOLUNTEERS ON THE FRONTLINE OF SCOTLAND’S MOUNTAIN RESCUE WITH LIFESAVING AVALANCHE TECH – Scotch Whisky News

Tomintoul Distillery backs volunteers on the frontline of Scotland’s mountain rescue with lifesaving avalanche tech

Volunteers who risk their lives to save others in the Cairngorms are heading into the mountains with a crucial new layer of protection thanks to Tomintoul Distillery’s continued support as the Official Spirit of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT).

The most recent round of funding from Tomintoul has enabled CMRT to upgrade its avalanche safety kit with new transceivers for the entire team. These small, powerful devices are designed for the worst-case scenario: locating a rescuer buried beneath the snowpack after an avalanche. In the Cairngorms, where volunteers operate in some of Scotland’s most hazardous conditions, this technology can mean the difference between life and death.

CMRT deputy team leader, Willie Anderson, explains:
“Avalanche transceivers are a basic but lifesaving part of kit. They give our volunteers an extra degree of safety when working in high risk conditions, dramatically speeding up our ability to find any of the team at risk.

“Our volunteers regularly go out in the dark, in storms and in places where avalanches are a very real danger. These devices don’t just help us help others — they help us protect our own. Seconds really do save lives and Tomintoul’s support means we can operate in the mountains better protected and better prepared.”

Alongside the vital equipment boost, the Speyside distillery has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the CMRT, announcing a third consecutive year of support. The milestone arrives at a meaningful moment for Tomintoul Distillery as it closes out its 60th anniversary year — six decades rooted in the Cairngorms, shaped by its landscape and deeply connected to the people who protect it.

Robert Fleming, Master Distiller, said:

“Our surrounding landscape shapes our whisky – from the water and the climate to the mountain air. But it’s the people who safeguard this place who truly inspire us. Supporting CMRT isn’t just a sponsorship — it’s real, lifesaving impact on the ground. These volunteers go out in conditions most of us can barely imagine and we’re proud to stand with them as we enter our third year together.”

CMRT remains one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in Scotland, with around 40 highly trained volunteers responding to many callouts each year across the Northern Cairngorms, Ben Alder and the Monadhliath Mountains — some of the most challenging terrain in Scotland. The team relies heavily on donations and grants to maintain its kit, training and operational readiness.

As the team reflects on another demanding winter season in the mountains, Tomintoul’s continued backing helps ensure that the volunteers who protect the region are protected themselves.

Sotheby’s and The Distillers’ Charity Extend Partnership Through To 2033 – Scotch Whisky News

Sotheby’s and The Distillers’ Charity Extend Partnership for the

Biennial Distillers One of One Auction Through To 2033

LONDON – The Distillers’ Charity and Sotheby’s today announced the continuation of their partnership for the biennial Distillers One of One Auction, the world’s leading charity whisky auction.

Sotheby’s – which has hosted the sale since its inception in 2021 – will collaborate with The Distillers’ Charity on the next four editions of The Distillers One of One Auction, extending the partnership through 2033. Across the first three auctions, the event has raised £6.6 million ($8.4 million) for The Distillers’ Charity, enabling support for 4,582 disadvantaged young people across Scotland, as of end March 2026.

Celebrating the passion, craftsmanship and innovation at the heart of Scotch whisky, The Distillers One of One Auction brings together ultra rare releases from distilleries and producers across Scotland: no two bottles are ever the same, and no lot will ever be recreated. The three auctions held so far have set 72 brand auction records and attracted bidders from more than 20 countries, affirming the event’s global resonance. In all, 49 companies have generously donated 120 lots to date.

The inaugural 2021 auction remains the most valuable charity whisky auction ever held, achieving £3.1 million ($4.1 million) and setting the pace for the success of the two subsequent sales. Highlights included a four-bottle set of Glenfiddich from the 1950s, which sold for £1 million ($1.4 million) – a record for Glenfiddich. In 2023, Bowmore topped the sale with STAC 55 Years Old, the oldest whisky ever released by the distillery, achieving £562,500 ($679.3k). In 2025, The Glenlivet took centre stage with SPIRA 60 Year Old 1965 – the distillery’s oldest expression to date, presented in a 1.5 litre spiral decanter – which sold for £650,000 ($871.4k), setting a new benchmark for the brand.

The auctions have been made possible through the exceptional generosity of donors from across the Scotch whisky industry, including Bacardi – John Dewar & Sons, Brown Forman, Campari Group, Chivas Brothers, Diageo, Gleann Mór, Gordon & MacPhail, International Beverage, KANDOBLANC, Suntory Global Spirits, The Last Drop and William Grant & Sons, among many others.

Founded more than 70 years ago, The Distillers’ Charity – the philanthropic arm of The Worshipful Company of Distillers – is a fundraising and grant making organisation. Following the inaugural sale in 2021, it launched the Youth Action Fund, supported exclusively through proceeds from the biennial auction. Against a backdrop of rising poverty, mental health challenges and youth unemployment, the fund engages more than 900 young people every year, helping them achieve meaningful outcomes in employment, training or further education. Uniquely, 100% of the auction hammer proceeds go directly to charitable causes. Each Distillers One of One Auction raises funds to cover two years of work by the Youth Action Fund; during 2025 alone, a total of 1,007 young people achieved a successful employability outcome helping them to reach their potential, with over 3,100 employability outcomes for young people since the fund’s inception.

The fourth edition of the Distillers One of One Auction will take place in Scotland in October 2027, with further details to be announced in due course.

Jonny Fowle, Global Head of Whisky & Spirits, Sotheby’s, said: “The continuation of Sotheby’s partnership with The Distillers’ Charity as host of The Distillers One of One Auction reflects the strength of a collaboration built on shared values. Since 2021, the auction has brought together extraordinary whiskies, visionary distillers and an international community of collectors, united by a commitment to excellence and philanthropy. It has firmly established itself as a landmark event in the global whisky calendar, celebrating the creativity and innovation of the Scotch whisky industry while delivering meaningful, lasting impact through The Distillers’ Charity. To stage a sale that not only showcases the very best of the whisky world but also makes such a tangible difference to young people and their communities across Scotland has been a career highlight.”Jonathan Driver, Chairman of Distillers One of One & Trustee of The Distillers’ Charity, said: “The nature of Collective Endeavour permeates all aspects of the Distillers One of One Auctions.  Since 2020 Sotheby’s has been an incredible partner, sharing the challenges of bringing the best of the Scotch Whisky Industry together for the best of causes. I am delighted that, in announcing the continuation of this long-term partnership with Sotheby’s, we will both ensure that the world’s pre-eminent Scotch Whisky Auction will continue to stand as a “Lighthouse” fixture in the global whisky calendar and continue the vital work to Transform Young People’s Lives through the funds raised. We look forward to the auctions to come, with the unmatched support of Sotheby’s and backed by the generosity, skill and craftmanship of our donor companies and our highly valued sponsors. Glen Scotia to bring new whisky festival to Luss this spring – Scotch Whisky News

Glen Scotia to bring new whisky festival to Luss this spring

Campbeltown distillery Glen Scotia is bringing the spirit of Scotland’s smallest whisky making region to Luss this spring with a new two-day whisky festival.

The ‘Glen Scotia Mini Malts Festival’ (16–17 May) is a smaller, more intimate counterpart to the distillery’s annual Campbeltown Malts Festival, a fixture in the global whisky calendar.

Attendees can enjoy Glen Scotia’s impressive portfolio of single malt whiskies while discovering how the distillery creates its signature character through a series of experimental tastings inspired by its latest releases.

Taking place at Luss Distillery – the newly opened state-of-the-art spirits destination of Loch Lomond Group (owners of Glen Scotia, Loch Lomond Whiskies and Ben Lomond Gin) – the event is a more accessible alternative for those unable to make the trip to the “wee toon”, being located under an hour from Glasgow.

The venue will be transformed to create a mini Campbeltown, with a Glen Scotia pop-up bar offering drams of this year’s Festival Edition bottling and a selection of exclusive single cask releases from the Campbeltown Malts Festival in recent years, which are highly limited and much-loved drams selected by Master Blender, Ashley Smith.

There will also be two unique tasting sessions:

  • A ‘Deconstructed Campbeltown Malts Festival Release 2026’ – an in-depth tasting exploring the individual components of the annual limited-edition festival release, unearthing its distinctive flavour profile and what makes it such a sought-after dram.
  • The ‘Big Campbeltown Character Tasting’ – a chance to discover Glen Scotia’s signature style through a guided tasting of its hero 12 Year Old expression, highlighting its characterful tropical fruit and coastal spray flavours, and exploring the elements that give it its distinctive oily texture.

Master Blender for Glen Scotia, Ashley Smith, said:

“Glen Scotia has established itself  on the global stage, but while our whisky is full of big character and big ambitions, our home and our people remain at the heart of everything we do, so it felt only right to offer a wee taste of the Campbeltown Malts Festival in our new Loch Lomond brand home.

“Across the two days, attendees will have the chance to explore this year’s Campbeltown Malts Festival limited-edition whisky, meet our small team of big characters, and enjoy an exciting flavour of the main festival’s atmosphere.”

Distiller Glen Scotia has been producing single malt whisky in Campbeltown since 1832 and is one of three surviving distilleries in Campbeltown. To this day, the distillery team follow in the footsteps of their founders, using traditional methods to create the subtly maritime style the brand has become world-famous for.

Recognition of Glen Scotia’s style and craftsmanship continues to be acknowledged globally.

  • In 2021, Glen Scotia’s 25-Year-Old single malt was awarded ‘Best In Show Whisky’ at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Over 3,800 entries across thirty-one categories were judged with Glen Scotia being awarded the overall winner across all countries and styles. Only seven months later, Glen Scotia was also named Scottish Whisky Distillery of the Year at the Scottish Whisky Awards 2021.
  • In 2022, Glen Scotia’s Victoriana won ‘Best In Class’ in the Distillers’ Single Malt Scotch – No Age Statement category at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
  • In 2023, Glen Scotia won ‘Best Single Cask Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards for a single cask bottling distilled in 2009 and aged for 13 years exclusively in a first-fill bourbon barrel.
  • Later that same year, Glen Scotia’s 25-Year-Old won a coveted Platinum award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023, which is awarded to the very few entries that receive a Double Gold medal for three consecutive years at the prestigious global event.
  • In 2024, Glen Scotia received a number of prestigious awards across its range of single malt whiskies, including Platinum titles at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2024 for both Glen Scotia Victoriana and Glen Scotia 25 Year Old.
  • In 2025, Glen Scotia was awarded several notable industry awards across its core range whiskies including Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum being named the best Campbeltown non-age statement whisky, as well as winning platinum accolades for Glen Scotia 15 and 25 Year Old, and gold for Glen Scotia Victoriana at the San Fransico World Spirits Competition 2025.
  • That same year, Glen Scotia 15 Year Old was also awarded gold at the International World Spirits Competition.

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY ANNOUNCES THE GRAND OPENING OF THE JOHN G. CARLISLE CAFE

In celebration of the Distillery’s first permanent dining destination, Buffalo Trace invites guests to explore a three-week lineup of daily experiences

FRANKFORT, KY (April 21, 2026) – Buffalo Trace Distillery today announces the grand opening of the John G. Carlisle Cafe, a permanent dining destination located within the historic Elmer T. Lee Clubhouse. Opening nearly one year after historic floodwaters impacted the Distillery, the John G. Carlisle Cafe is a testament to the Distillery’s resilience and enduring spirit of hospitality, inviting guests to gather and dine in a space that has been central to the Distillery for more than 90 years.

Primarily focused on lunchtime service, the 4,900-square-foot cafe offers seating for 70 guests with additional seats on the patio. The menu features made-to-order sandwiches, salads and desserts as well as Kentucky classics, including the iconic Kentucky Hot Brown. Buffalo Trace-infused flavors are incorporated into select cafe menu offerings, including bourbon bacon, barrel-aged coffee, bourbon-infused fudge topping and whipped cream, and more. Additionally, the John G. Carlisle Cafe will offer a rotating menu of select cocktails featuring Buffalo Trace spirits available for purchase, including a Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned, Wheatley Vodka Peach Mule and a Traveller Whiskey Lucky Penny.

Keeping with the Distillery’s motto, “Honor Tradition, Embrace Change,” the John G. Carlisle Cafe features historic artifacts that connect guests to the people and moments that have shaped the Distillery’s more than two centuries of history. On display is the only known bottle of Carlisle Whiskey, which has been preserved in the Distillery’s archives, along with rare photographs of the original Carlisle Distillery and images of employees using the Clubhouse dating back to the 1950s. Visitors who look closely may also notice a subtle yet powerful design element inside the cafe – the flood line marking the historic high-water level reached during the April 2025 flood.

“For years, guests have asked for a dedicated place to enjoy a meal while spending the day with us,” said Tyler Adams, General Manager, Buffalo Trace Distillery. “The John G. Carlisle Cafe is a meaningful addition to the Distillery experience, opening this historic space to the public for the first time and inviting visitors to slow down, settle in, and fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere that makes Buffalo Trace so special.”

“As we introduce the John G. Carlisle Cafe, our team is committed to delivering a terrific experience,” said Adams. “We encourage guests to plan extra time for their next visit and thank them for their patience as we welcome visitors into the space for the first time.”

Originally constructed in 1935, the Elmer T. Lee Clubhouse was designed as a welcoming gathering place for meals, celebrations and community at the Distillery. Over the decades, the lower level served as a cafeteria, breakroom and company event venue, hosting everything from holiday gatherings to visits from national dignitaries. Today, that spirit of connection continues through the John G. Carlisle Cafe, named in tribute of the influential politician whose leadership helped secure passage of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.

To honor Carlisle’s support of industry, Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. built two distilleries in 1879 – one of which he named the Carlisle Distillery. Situated alongside Taylor’s O.F.C. Distillery, the Carlisle Distillery produced Kentucky River Whiskey and Carlisle Whiskey until Prohibition. Although the Carlisle Distillery was demolished in 1936, its legacy – as well as the legacy of the namesake – lives on in the reimagined space.

The John G. Carlisle Cafe opens May 11, 2026. Hours of operation are Monday-Sunday from 11am – 3pm. For more information about the Carlisle Cafe, and the lineup of daily offerings, please visit buffalotracedistillery.com/visit-us/cafe.

Sazerac’s First Tennessee Whiskey Prepares For Summer 2026 Debut – American Whiskey News

SAZERAC FORMALLY NAMES TENNESSEE OPERATION AJ BOND DISTILLERY AS COMPANY’S FIRST TENNESSEE WHISKEY PREPARES FOR 2026 DEBUT

Distillery name honors the bond between Master Distillers Allisa Henley and the late John Lunn, whose expertise launched Sazerac’s Tennessee Whiskey operations in 2016

LA VERGNE, TN – Sazerac, the global spirits company behind award-winning distilleries including Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky; Hawk’s Rock Distillery in Ireland; and Paul John Distillery in India, is proud to announce the official name of its Tennessee operation as AJ Bond Distillery, marking a major milestone as the company prepares to debut its first Tennessee Whiskey in Summer 2026.

The name honors the bond between industry visionaries Allisa Henley and the late John Lunn, whose shared passion and decades of experience helped bring Sazerac’s Tennessee whiskey ambitions to life. The company entered the category in 2016 with the acquisition of the Popcorn Sutton distillery facility, retaining the skilled production team led by Henley and Lunn. Continued investment in equipment and capabilities followed, culminating in the relocation of the operation in 2019 to its current home in La Vergne, where their legacy continues through ongoing production and aging.

“Formally naming AJ Bond Distillery reinforces our commitment to Tennessee Whiskey and reflects Sazerac’s broader vision to invest in exceptional people, places and traditions that shape the future of American spirits,” said Jake Wenz, President and CEO of Sazerac. “Under Allisa and John’s leadership, this team has built a strong foundation rooted in expertise, passion and a deep respect for the craft. As we look ahead, we are proud to build on their legacy as we continue to balance heritage with innovation in pursuit of producing world-class spirits.”

Henley and Lunn began working together in 2004, developing a strong partnership rooted in technical expertise. The duo worked side-by-side for more than 12 years before joining Sazerac. Their expertise, combined with guidance and resources from Sazerac’s Buffalo Trace Distillery, helped establish the foundation of the operation crafting true Tennessee Whiskey. The AJ Bond name honors Henley and Lunn’s partnership, which was cut short in 2023 with Lunn’s passing.

“John and I worked together for 20 years, and he played a major role in shaping my understanding of the chemistry behind distillation,” said Henley. “We worked diligently to create every aspect of AJ Bond Distillery together. His absence is felt every day, but I know he would be proud of what we’ve created. It’s meaningful to know that the whiskey made here will carry his legacy forward.”

Since the acquisition, AJ Bond Distillery has relocated its operations to La Vergne, Tennessee, expanding production capacity and investing in additional equipment and team members to support the operation’s long-term growth. Today, the distillery is producing and aging what will become Sazerac’s first Tennessee whiskey brand, crafted from a mashbill originally developed by Henley and Lunn.

“From the very beginning, John and I knew we wanted to make a true Tennessee Whiskey, and we’re incredibly proud of the mashbill we’ve developed,” said Henley. “Seeing it now aging in our warehouses has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Our team has worked tirelessly to bring our shared vision to life, and I’m excited for what is to come.”

The upcoming debut of AJ Bond Distillery’s flagship Tennessee whiskey brand (details to come soon) will mark Sazerac’s formal entry into the category and underscore the company’s commitment to producing award-winning whiskeys world-wide through a thoughtful balance of honoring tradition and embracing innovation. In the years ahead, AJ Bond plans to introduce additional expressions and limited experimental releases designed to explore new possibilities in Tennessee whiskey while remaining grounded in the traditional methods championed by Henley and Lunn. Together, these future offerings will build on the foundation established by the inaugural brand and further strengthen Sazerac’s long-term presence in the category.

More details about AJ Bond Distillery’s inaugural Tennessee Whiskey will be shared in the months ahead as the brand prepares for its Summer 2026 debut.

IWSC Returns to Kentucky for the 3rd Annual Spirited Judging June 1-6, 2026 – Entry Date Extended – Whisky News

The “Olympics of the Drinks Industry” Extends Entries until May 8

LONDON (April 27, 2026) — Spirits industry professionals from around the world will once again gather in Bardstown, Kentucky — the “Bourbon Capital of the World” — for the 3rd IWSC (International Wine & Spirits Competition) in early June.  This year,in addition to judging North American Whiskey and Ready-to-Drink (RTD) spirits, the categories are expanding to accept gin, vodka, rum, and liqueurs from across the United States, and the entry deadline has been extended to May 8th.

Founded in 1969, the London-based IWSC evaluates more than 12,000 entries annually from over 90 countries. The North American Spirits Judging marks the competition’s exclusive North American event, reinforcing Kentucky’s role as a global hub for whiskey and other spirits excellence.

The judges — representing the worldwide standard of beverage expertise — provide North American whiskey and other spirit producers a unique opportunity for international recognition from the competition, widely regarded and recognized as one of the most prestigious in the world. The 2026 Judging Panel of experts brings perspectives from distilling, retail buying, hospitality, media, and global distribution, ensuring a comprehensive and balanced evaluation process.

Led by Dawn Davies, Master of Wine, Commercial Buying Director, Speciality Drinks and The Whisky Exchange, the panel of judges will evaluate the entries using the same rigorous judging process as in the UK, which includes double-blind tasting, a limited number of entries judged per day to avoid palate fatigue, and panel discussions between the judges.

In addition to Davies, the other judges for the North American competition are:

  • Richard Paterson OBE, Master Blender, Whyte & Mackay
  • Jack Beguedou, Spirits Industry Consultant
  • Georgie Bell, Ambassador, Scotch Malt Whisky Society and co-founder of The Heart Cut
  • Molly Horn, Total Wine & More
  • Brad Japhe, Spirits Journalist
  • Reece Sims, SIP Spirits Consulting & The Flavor Report
  • Tristan Stephenson, bartender and co-founder of Black Rock, London

Kentucky is one of just seven global locations where the IWSC delivers its full London judging model through its Global Judging program. Entries are assessed to exactly the same standards, by the same caliber of international judging panels, and within the same rigorous framework as in London—ensuring complete consistency and credibility across all results.

As in London, the Kentucky event pairs these world-class tasting sessions with a program that celebrates the people, places, and spirits that define America’s whiskey culture. Crucially, all medal winners benefit from the IWSC’s global results campaign, receiving the same level of recognition, promotion and commercial opportunity as those judged in London.

Medals awarded include Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Outstanding. Top-scoring products advance to the prestigious Trophy Judging round. Winners are revealed at the IWSC Awards Celebration in November 2026 in London.

The IWSC is grateful for its 2026 partners: Heaven Hill, Angel’s Envy, Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Total Wine & More, Kentucky Eagle, Glencairn, Buzick Construction, Mint Julep Experiences, and Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

How to Enter

Visit the IWSC North American Whiskey & RTD Judging page to submit entries.
