Whisky Tasting Events at Milroy’s of Soho

London’s oldest whisky shop is excited to announce a series of Scotch whisky, Bourbon and rye whiskey tastings to be held downstairs in The Vault at Milroy’s of Soho.

All events can hold up to 30 people and will be hosted by Lee Tomlinson or Angus Martin both experienced Milroy’s of Soho staff.

Lee frequently visits distilleries in Scotland and for the last year he has been hitting the whisky auctions in search of old bottlings in a grand experiment to understand the differences between whisky made now, and that made twenty, thirty years or more ago. Angus’ love of whisky began at home and developed as he spent his time at university visiting distilleries across Scotland. He started his career at Scotch restaurant Boisdale of Belgravia as a whisky and cigar sommelier and then he jumped ship to Milroy’s in 2011. Angus runs all of the specialist tasting events at Milroy’s of Soho.

Milroy’s of Soho has three priorities when running a tasting. Firstly, never patronise – their tastings cover everything from the basics up to the molecular science of whisky, you can attend any of Milroy’s tastings no matter what your experience of whisky is. Secondly – they don’t believe in reciting the myths that some marketers like to propagate, there’s enough scandalous whisky stories out there without inventing more! Thirdly, have fun – their tastings are informal, the important thing is to sit back and enjoy the whisky.

See below a list of upcoming events.

AD Rattray Ambassador Night (A family business that specialises in selecting single casks of whisky to bottle, founded in 1868)

Milroy’s of Soho have long been fans of the AD Rattray single cask bottlings and eagerly await each release with bated breath. On this evening Milroy’s will be joined by their brand ambassador who will take through their various single cask bottlings – expect the hard-to-find and unusual!

Date: Tuesday 23rd June 2015

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £15. The ticket price is redeemable against a bottle of AD Rattray whisky on the evening.

Introduction to Whisky

This will be a journey into the world of whisky (and whiskey). From the shores of Scotland to the heartland of Bourbon. Milroy’s of Soho expert staff will take you from the grain which produces the amber nectar, through to the oak trees that become the casks. Furthermore, you will be regaled with the myths and legends that surround iconic distilleries and be introduced to the science employed to create this the most complex of spirits. This tasting is perfect for newcomers and connoisseurs alike. They only open whisky that they want to drink too, so expect the very best!

Date: Monday 13th July 2015 with a second date on the 24th of August.

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £35

Glenfiddich Premium Ambassador Night

Glenfiddich is the best-selling single malt in the world. Milroy’s of Soho will host a tasting to sample the best of this plane’ss most awarded whisky under the expert tutelage of Mark Thomson UK brand ambassador for Glenfiddich. To cap it all off every attendee will be presented with a complimentary bottle of the Glenfiddich 21 Year Old.

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Feis Ile 2015 Masterclass (Festival of Music & Malt)

Milroy’s of Soho sent an intrepid member of staff up to Islay. His task was to fill the shop and bar shelves with a host of limited edition bottles from the festival and the famous Islay distilleries. Naturally, as they took stock of his impressive haul, Milroy’s of Soho thought it would only be fair to give everyone the chance to try some of these (largely) smoky drams. As such, they have set up their very first Feis Ile masterclass where you can sample six of the festival releases from: Bunnahbhain, Caol Ila, Bowmore, Laphroiag, Kilchoman, and even a very special 24 year old Lagvulin!

Date: Monday 3rd August 2015

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £35

Bootleggers & Bourbon Masterclass

Milroy’s of Soho resurrected their popular American whisky evening. Since they’ve reopened they’ve been bowled over by the growth in popularity of Bourbon and rye whisky, and now, more than ever, is a tasting dedicated to Scotch’s transatlantic cousins more appropriate. Milroy’s of Soho resident American whisky enthusiast Angus Martin will be taking guest through his favourite whisky’s and the honourable and illicit tales that surround them, from the Civil War to Mad Men!

Date: Monday 21st September 2015

Timings: 18:30 until 20:00

Price: £35

As well as these events Milroy’s of Soho has a 12 seater whisky bar called the Milroy’s Bar, serving a selection of over 250 whiskies, all poured at 35ml rather than 25ml to enjoy the taste in a more traditional manner.

Notes

Lee Tomlinson (purchasing & general manager)

Lee began his whisky career in 2010 when he joined the ‘two Phillips’ at Milroy’s after training as an electrician and then dabbling with architecture. He swiftly rose through the ranks and has been managing the store since 2011. Lee can often be found in Scotland visiting distilleries or, if you’re lucky, mixing the best daiquiris this side of the West Indies. For the last year lee has been hitting the whisky auctions in search of old bottlings in a grand experiment to understand the differences between whisky made now, and that made twenty, thirty years or more ago. Lee is responsible for keeping our shelves packed with whisky from Scotland and around the world.

Angus Martin (retail manager & online coordinator)

Angus’ love of whisky began at home and developed as he spent his time at university visiting distilleries across Scotland rather than reading tomes about. Starting his career at Scotch restaurant Boisdale of Belgravia as a whisky and cigar sommelier he jumped ship to Milroy’s in 2011. After a brief sabbatical working in the marketing department for an online whisky retailer, Angus returned to Milroy’s to run our website and tasting events in 2012. Angus has always had the intention to collect whisky but is still trying to get to grips with the bit where you don’t open the bottles! As well as keeping our website up-to-date, Angus runs all of our specialist tasting events.

Simo (Executive Director)

Twenty Eight year old Simo is the Executive Director of Milroy’s of Soho and has already three successful ventures under his belt. Most recently he launched Coal Vaults, a basement bar on Wardour Street with a paired dining concept. Simo is also the CEO of building company Griffin Construction, and started Space No9, a 1930s location house located on the Shoreditch triangle. Simo has been hands on in every project he has undertaken since he first entered the business world, taking an idea and making it grow into something incredible.

Milroy’s History and Brothers

Milroy’s of Soho was established in 1964 by John and Wallace Milroy. The Milroy brothers are credited with bringing single malt whisky from Scotland and establishing it in London. The first of its kind, it is the oldest whisky specialist and shop in London. Even before Milroy brothers took over in 1964 the space had been used as a liquor shop.

The Milroy Brothers gave advice and wisdom to the world from their shop in Soho. Hugely respected for their plain speaking and great knowledge of whisky, they are admired internationally for their simplicity, clarity and plain speaking. They are credited with bringing single malt whiskey from Scotland and establishing it in London. Even before the Milroy brothers took over, the space had been used as a liquor shop since the 1930s. The shop originally had a basement bar and was used as a whisky heaven for people to enjoy a glass surrounded by the good company of other whisky lovers. The brothers loved their shop so much they even built a bedroom upstairs. It was a place built on community with people travelling from all over London.

The Milroy’s brothers became ambassadors of whisky for London and to this day are regarded as royalty amongst whisky lovers and the alcohol industry.

NH Liquor Commission Purchases Record Quantity of Exclusive Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel

Limited amount of Jack Daniel’s coveted whiskey available exclusively at select NH Liquor & Wine Outlets; Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher to visit New Hampshire for bottle signings

Concord, NH – Only one in 100 barrels of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is hand-selected to mature and attain the highest designation of Single Barrel quality. The New Hampshire Liquor Commission (NHLC) recently purchased a record 15 barrels – or the equivalent of 3,750 bottles – of Single Barrel, which will be available exclusively at select NH Liquor & Wine Outlets starting this week. In commemoration of the record-setting purchase, Jack Daniel’s Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher will make a special appearance in the Granite State June 19th and 20th to meet with customers and autograph bottles.

“Thanks to our record sales, which reached $626 million in FY 14, including $345 million in spirits alone, the New Hampshire Liquor Commission has tremendous buying power and industry awareness and is afforded unique opportunities to acquire and deliver exclusive products for our consumers,” said NHLC Chairman Joseph W. Mollica. “This record purchase of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel is but one example of the many exceptional spirits and wines available only at our 78 NH Liquor & Wine Outlets statewide. Bringing opportunities like this to customers strengthens our brand, differentiates us from the competition and helps drive critical state revenue.”

Dramatic temperature changes and placement in the highest reaches of Jack Daniel’s Lynchburg, Tennessee barrelhouses results in a distinct flavor profile from each and every barrel of Single Barrel. One constant is Single Barrel’s one-of-a-kind flavor, robust taste, and notes of toasted oak, vanilla and caramel.

In late April, NHLC spirits marketing specialist Mark Roy traveled to the small town of Lynchburg, home to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, to obtain first-hand knowledge of the Jack Daniel’s whiskey-making process and to hand-select the 15 barrels of Single Barrel with the assistance of Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Jeff Arnett, Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher and representatives from Brown-Forman and Horizon Beverage Company. For an inside look at the barrel selection process and history of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, visit the NH Liquor & Wine Outlets on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/nhliquorwine and YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/user/nhliquorandwine.

“Today’s whiskey consumers are interested in discovering nuanced flavors and that is exactly what these 15 barrels of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel provide,” said Jack Daniel’s Assistant Master Distiller Chris Fletcher. “Once the 250 or so bottles from each barrel are gone, there will never be another whiskey that will be exactly the same, making this truly a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. To have the commitment of the state of New Hampshire to come to Lynchburg, experience the entire whiskey making process, understand what affects the flavor of the whiskey and actually hand-select their 15 favorite barrels to bring back to New Hampshire, illustrates to me that the New Hampshire Liquor Commission wants nothing but the best of the best for its customers.”

On Friday, June 19th, Fletcher will make a special appearance and bottle signing at the Hooksett 93 North NH Liquor & Wine Outlet from 3-6pm and participate in a Jack Daniel’s Family of Brands tasting and meet and greet at Makris Lobster and Steak House in Concord from 7-9pm. On Saturday, June 20th, Fletcher will participate in bottle signings and tastings at the Meredith NH Liquor & Wine Outlet from 11am-1pm, the Gilford NH Liquor & Wine Outlet from 2-4pm and conclude at the Laconia Roadhouse at the Weirs Beach Lobster Pound from 5-7pm.

The 15 varieties of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel will be distributed throughout select NH Liquor & Wine Outlets and available for a limited time sale price of $44.99. Each bottle is adorned with a personalized medallion of authenticity inscribed with “Granite State Collection Record Setting 15 Barrels in 2015.”

“In addition to celebrating the record-setting purchase, the NH Liquor Commission is proud to have made its 15th consecutive Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel acquisition. We have come a long way since securing a lone barrel in 2001,” said Mark Roy, NHLC spirits marketing specialist. “Nowhere else in the world will these specific flavor profiles of Single Barrel be available. Each was selected to account for a variety of customer tastes. Every bottle selected features specific tasting notes from Master Distiller Jeff Arnett and we anticipate many customers will choose to purchase bottles from multiple barrels so they can experience the range of tasting experiences.”

The Macallan, distributed by Maxxium UK, has opened its doors to consumers at The Macallan Residence in the first UK event of its kind for the luxury single malt whisky.

The Macallan took up residence at the prestigious neo-Gothic mansion Two Temple Place in London for two nights only (2 and 3 June), where consumers were taken on a journey of carefully curated experiences exploring the world of photography, food and fashion.

The Macallan Residence was created to invite consumers into the world of The Macallan and to celebrate the award winning The Macallan 1824 Series.  With over 700 consumers entering The Macallan Residence, the brand reported strong consumer engagement over the course of the two evenings.

Guests were greeted with bespoke branded keys and invited to unlock their senses.  The evening began with an exclusive masterclass by Wayne Collins from Maxxium’s Mixxit team in the art of cocktail making with a twist on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, ‘The Macallan Old Gold’.

Esquire supported the event as media partner.  The luxury men’s magazine hosted tailor Timothy Everest and a bespoke styling service as well as Shinola who offered guests personalised monogramming.

Guests were invited to nose and taste Amber, Sienna and Ruby, award winning whiskies from The 1824 Series in a chocolate and whisky pairing from Artisan Du Chocolat and Mixxit’s David Miles.

Keith Bonnington, The Macallan Senior Brand Manager, commented:  “Creating The Macallan Residence allowed us to open our doors and welcome consumers into the world of The Macallan.  These events were the first of their kind in the UK and we wanted consumers to be able to truly experience The Macallan, bringing to life the brand’s luxury credentials and our unwavering dedication to quality and craft.  Our venue, Two Temple Place, offered the perfect combination of grandeur with the intimacy of a private house party, and our hosts showcased the very best of The Macallan.

“The Macallan Residence allowed us to introduce our single malts to new consumers and deliver strong brand engagement in a memorable way.”

Brown-Forman to Build New Distillery at Historic Slane Castle in Ireland; Company Will Invest $50 Million To Build New Irish Whiskey Distillery

Louisville, KY, June 2, 2015 – Brown-Forman Corporation announced today that it has purchased all shares of Slane Castle Irish Whiskey Limited. Brown-Forman will invest approximately $50 million to build a new distillery and consumer experience on the historic Slane Castle Estate in County Meath, Ireland, the home of Henry Conyngham, the eighth Marquess Conyngham, and his son, Alex Conyngham, the Earl of Mount Charles.

“We are very excited about this new venture into Irish Whiskey,” said Brown-Forman Chief Executive Officer Paul Varga. “Brown-Forman has a long history of bringing great whiskey to the world, such as Woodford Reserve, which we introduced in 1996 and has since grown to become one of the world’s leading super premium bourbon brands.”

“Irish whiskey has been one of the fastest growing segments in the global whiskey category over the last few years,” stated Lawson Whiting, executive vice president and chief brands & strategy officer for Brown-Forman Brands, “and we’re excited to be partnering with the Conyngham family as we build the new Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery and introduce new Irish whiskeys to the world.”

Whiting said that Brown-Forman will open the Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery in late 2016, and introduce new Irish whiskeys in the spring of 2017, initially using high quality whiskey purchased from other Irish distilleries and then finished to Slane’s exacting specifications while the whiskey made at the new Slane Distillery is laid down to mature in the nearby Irish countryside. “We’ll use proprietary methods to create unique and high quality taste profiles to position our brands in the premium and super premium segments, with a range of blended, pot
still, and single grain Irish whiskeys that will delight whiskey aficionados and consumers alike,” added Whiting.

Alex Conyngham said, “Our family has been part of the Slane community for many generations and we are pleased to join forces with Brown-Forman to bring our special part of Ireland to the world. Our commitment to caring for our land, cultivating barley, and our family legacy are consistent with Brown-Forman’s long-term approach to whiskey making, and we believe that this aligned approach will bring great success.”

Henry Conyngham added, “Our family will be a key part of the brand-building model for these new Irish whiskeys and we are thrilled at the prospect of working for many years to come with Brown-Forman on developing the trademarks and to welcoming friends to the new distillery, right next door to our ancestral home. We know that Brown-Forman is the perfect partner to take these new Irish whiskeys to the U.S. and other markets across the globe.”

Slane Castle is located in the middle of a 1,500 acre estate in the heart of the Boyne Valley, 30 miles north of Dublin.

For more than 140 years, Brown-Forman Corporation has enriched the experience of life by responsibly building fine quality beverage alcohol brands, including Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, Southern Comfort, Finlandia, Jack Daniel’s & Cola, Canadian Mist, Korbel, Gentleman Jack, el Jimador, Herradura, Sonoma-Cutrer, Chambord, New Mix, Tuaca, and Woodford Reserve. Brown-Forman’s brands are supported by nearly 4,200 employees and sold in approximately 160 countries worldwide. For more information about the company, please visit http://www.brown-forman.com/.

AA The Spirit of Dublin is Flowing

Teeling Whiskey Distillery officially opens its doors

€10m distillery is the first in Dublin in 125 years

State-of-the art visitor experience set to become a top destination for tourists

The Teeling Whiskey Company (TWC) today officially opened its brand new distillery and visitor centre in The Liberties, Dublin. The €10 million distillery is the first in Dublin in over 125 years and the only fully operational distillery in the city at present.

As well as fully functioning distillery, there is a state-of-the-art visitor centre which will host whiskey tasting tours, a café, a bar, a private event space for hire and a gift shop. The visitor centre will officially start taking paying visitors from Saturday, 13th June and will be open from 9.30am – 5.30pm 7 days a week.

Founded by Jack Teeling in 2012, TWC was set up to revive his family-old trademark of Irish whiskey and bring distilling back to Dublin, where Walter Teeling had a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the 18th century.  The Teeling Whiskey Company is run by Jack together with his brother Stephen.

The opening of this new distillery means that TWC has complete control of all aspects of its whiskey production, from grain to bottle, so that it can truly lead the category in terms of innovation and build on the company’s ever growing reputation of producing some of the world’s best whiskeys. Most recently, Teeling Single Malt was named ‘World’s Best’ at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards and Teeing Small Batch was awarded ‘Best Blended Irish Whiskey’ at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Irish whiskey is currently experiencing a surge in popularity both at home and abroad and is the fastest growing spirits category in the world. According to an IWSR/Just drinks report*, Irish whiskey is expected to grow by +60% between 2014 and 2019 and it is estimated that 96m bottles of Irish whiskey will be sold globally by 2016.

Jack Teeling, founder and managing director of the Teeling Whiskey Company commented: “Today is a momentous day in the history of our company and something we have been working towards for the last three years. We are delighted to officially open our brand new distillery and bring back the tradition of distilling to Dublin.  We are also looking forward to opening our doors to our first official visitors this weekend and we’re confident that our distillery will become a must-visit destination for tourists to Dublin from all over the world.”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

TEELING WHISKEY HERITAGE AND THE WHISKEY HERITAGE OF THE LIBERTIES

The Teelings have being crafting Irish whiskey since 1782 when Walter Teeling had a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in The Liberties of Dublin. At this time there were over 37 different distilleries in Dublin alone in particular centralised in the industrial engine room of the city: The Liberties; the Coombe, Newmarket and Smithfield.

During the 19th century Dublin whiskey became globally recognised as the premier whiskey in the world and some of the largest distilleries of the time emerged from these smaller operations in Dublin’s Liberties.  The remains of many of these can still be seen to this day however in 1976 the last Dublin distillery shut down with production moved to Midleton, Cork.

ABOUT THE TEELING WHISKEY COMPANY

The tour will involve seeing all the elements involved in whiskey production from barley to milling to fermentation right up to 3 custom made copper pot stills. All tours will receive a measure of Teeling whiskey with an accompanying pre-prohibition style cocktail. There are a variety of options for whiskey tasting experiences involving an upgrade to a Teeling Trinity tasting or taste the award winning range of Teeling Single Malts. Since it was founded in 1983 in Edinburgh, it has bottled whisky from more than 130 different distilleries in Scotland and around the world, in addition to other spirits such as rum and Bourbon.

Opening 28 Queen Street to all:

The 28 Queen Street venue has previously been open to non-members on a temporary trial basis – these trials proved so successful that it will now be permanently open for everyone to discover the largest collection of single malt whisky in the UK. Non members will now be able to use the bar and sample exclusive drams – though only members can buy bottles of Society whisky.

The Society’s other venue in Edinburgh, The Vaults in Leith, will continue to operate as a members-only venue – as will its venue in London at 19 Greville Street in Farringdon.

28 Queen Street, which first opened in May 2004, is a an elegant Georgian townhouse spread across 4 floors – it comprises of:

  • A whisky bar on the first floor with an unrivalled selection of malts
  • The Dining Room restaurant on the ground floor
  • Event and meeting spaces on the second and third floors

Paul Miles, Managing Director of The Society, said: “Members have already discovered the joys of the Society and opening 28 Queen Street permanently for everyone is a great opportunity for others to enjoy the unrivalled array of whisky we have on offer.”

“These are very exciting times for the whisky industry and the Society. With exceptional new whiskies and other spirits released monthly, there has never been a better time to visit 28 Queen Street or join the Society.”

Opening plans – 12 Tub Cinema Club:

The Society is celebrating opening its 28 Queen Street venue to all by staging the 12 Tub Cinema Club, a series of intimate film screenings served with a range of 12 specially created whisky ice creams, called ‘Ice Dream Drams’.

Each of the classic films showing at the 12 Tub Cinema Club from Friday 19th June to Saturday 11 July will have a whisky link, such as The Angels’ Share and Whisky Galore. Guests can take their pick from the Society’s menu of ‘Ice Dream Drams’, 12 flavours of whisky ice cream created in collaboration with renowned Edinburgh ice cream makers, S Luca.

The ice creams reflect the Society’s flavour-based approach to whisky. The Society categorises its whiskies by flavour, rather than by conventional whisky regions, using 12 unique whisky flavour profiles such as Oily & Coastal; Spicy & Sweet; and Young & Spritely. The ice creams include:

  • Maple Bacon Crunch – sweet syrup and smoky bacon flavours combined with Peated whisky
  • Banana-Dram-A – banana and marshmallow ice cream made with a Sweet, Fruity and Mellow whisky

INAUGURAL 1792 SWEET WHEAT BOURBON WHISKEY UNVEILED – American Whiskey News

1792 Sweet Wheat Bottle

INAUGURAL 1792 SWEET WHEAT BOURBON WHISKEY UNVEILED

More limited edition bourbons expected from Barton 1792 Distillery

BARDSTOWN, kENTUCKY (June 10, 2015) – Barton 1792 Distillery will soon debut the first ever new 1792 whiskey expression, entitled 1792 Sweet Wheat.  Distilled back in 2007, the recipe features wheat as the secondary grain, rather than traditional rye. “Using wheat instead of rye gives the taste profile a softer and more delicate flavor,” said Ken Pierce, director of distillation and quality assurance. “The soft flavor is balanced by rich oak tannins extracted by the bourbon while aging in the charred oak barrels.”

Distilled, aged, and bottled at Barton 1792 Distillery, this wheated bourbon delivers a markedly distinct flavor profile.  Made with a recipe of corn, wheat, and malted barley and a yeast strain specific to Barton 1792 Distillery, this new expression was aged for eight years in the warehouses in Bardstown. Hints of caramel, vanilla, and ripe fruit mingle with notes of deep oak tannins and tobacco. The elegant taste is followed by a clean, pleasing finish and unmistakable character.

1792 Sweet Wheat was bottled at 91.2 proof. Bottles are expected to hit stores this summer at the suggested retail price of $32.99.  Furthermore, the Distillery plans to release more new expressions of 1792 over the next few years. “We have some remarkable whiskies aging in Bardstown,” said marketing director Kris Comstock. “We’re excited to unveil them over the next several years.”

Glenfarclas 511.19 Family Reserve – Scotch Whisky News

AA GF 511.19 FR

This month J. & G. Grant introduce the new £511.19s.0d Family Reserve to celebrate the 150th anniversary of family ownership of the Glenfarclas distillery. On the 8th of June 1865, John Grant, 1st generation of the Grant family, bought the distillery for £511.19s.0d. His grandsons, John and George, later formed the company J. & G. Grant and to this day it remains an independent business and firmly in the hands of the family’s 5th & 6th generation.

The £511.19s.0d Family Reserve, a non-chill filtered bottling at 43%, is a vatting of predominantly first fill sherry butts which proudly embodies the distillery’s sherry profile, bringing together all the character of this great spirit across the generations. Sweet and rich sherry, like a toffee syrup over a freshly toasted French baguette, the nose promises fresh fruit smothered in heather honey, ending almost like a sweet port. Then a dry yet sweet taste, a lovely balance of fruit, light nuttiness and milk chocolate develop, followed by a very palatable long and easy finish. A copy of the original bill of sale is included with each bottle along with a note from George Grant explaining the significance of the £511.19s.0d Family Reserve to the Grant family tradition.

Putting this family achievement into perspective, the time and dedication taken by the Grant’s to create a consistently high quality whisky for well over a century should not be underestimated. Within an industry where economic booms and recessions are omnipresent, the art of balancing and anticipating the worldwide demand for whisky is no easy feat. Yet the Grants pushed on through the changing landscape of the whisky industry, as more and more distilleries were bought over by international conglomerates, as drinks portfolios expanded and aged single malt took to the fore. Over the years they have witnessed an entire transformation of distillery ownership across Scotland, resisting company proposals for the purchase of their very own distillery and choosing instead to be governed by no one other than themselves.

To mark this historic occasion today at the distillery, John and George Grant filled 10 sherry butts and 10 sherry hogshead casks to lay down for the future generations. “The beauty of independence is that we have total control over the quality and character of our whisky, and with this control we can personally choose what we want the brand to represent”, says George Grant, 6th generation of the family. Today with only a handful of independent distillers left, J. & G. Grant have stood the test of time and with the release of this special edition £511.19s.0d Family Reserve, what better way to raise a glass to their history and Glenfarclas single malt whisky.

Brown-Forman Closes on Main Street Property; Old Forester Distillery on Track, Construction Manager Named

MAY 28, 2015, LOUISVILLE, KY – Brown-Forman Corporation today announced the transfer of the property deed for 117 and 119 West Main Street, Louisville, Kentucky, from Main Street Revitalization LLC to Brown-Forman Corporation for the purchase price of $4.5 million. Stoll Keenon Ogden brokered the deal.

Brown-Forman announced in September 2014 that it will open the Old Forester Distillery in the two historic buildings on Whiskey Row in the fall of 2016.

After a competitive bid process, Messer Construction has been chosen as the managing contractor of the project. The combined buildings have approximately 55,000 square feet with 52 linear feet facing Main Street. The brick and masonry facade of the building will be preserved and fully restored during the project.

The historic properties at 117 and 119 West Main Street were built around 1857 and used for warehousing barrels of whiskey produced at numerous distilleries in the areas. At least nineteen distillers, wholesalers, and other whiskey-related businesses called this block of West Main Street home. Between 1900 and 1919, Brown-Forman operated out of the 117 West Main Street building before moving to its current headquarters at 850 Dixie Highway.

Old Forester was founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown. Brown believed Old Forester was of such consistent high quality that he sealed it, signed it, and pledged “There is nothing better in the market.” The Old Forester Distillery will celebrate Brown’s innovative spirit and his commitment to making the highest quality bourbon. The working distillery will include fermentation, distilling, barrel making, filling and dumping, and bottling.

The company anticipates investing approximately $45 million in this project. The new Old Forester Distillery will allow the company to double its current production of Old Forester.

SCOTTISH LEADER ‘A NEW PERSPECTIVE’ GLOBAL AD SHOT IN CAPE TOWN – Scotch Whisky News

SCOTTISH LEADER ‘A NEW PERSPECTIVE’ GLOBAL AD SHOT IN CAPE TOWN

Best-selling whisky brand, Scottish Leader, is entrenching its new-look and enhanced blends with a world-wide advertising campaign shot on location in Cape Town, South Africa.

The campaign was conceived by global creative agency TBWA, with accomplished director Kevin Fitzgerald* and seasoned creative director Carl Willoughby** at the helm of delivering a captivating visual presentation.

Filming snaked its way through the streets of Cape Town; from Harrington Street and The German Club in the east city, to Nazareth House in Vredehoek, to the V&A Waterfront harbour area and Wynberg Park, with a final sequence shot at in the courtyard of a chocolatier.

The TV commercial presents the concept of perspective by showing how something as simple as a circle can serve as a vehicle to augment reality in a myriad of ways.  It depicts, for instance, a circle as round hair rollers holding the promise of beauty, a magnifying glass flipping the subject 180˚, a jazz brass band bringing down the house, a “sea” of old LPs –  defining a generation, and a coin to show the thin line between victory and defeat.

“Scottish Leader is asking consumers to take a new perspective on its offering, mirroring the way in which the brand has taken a new look at itself, and changed its formula on all levels to appeal to a rapidly moving global market,” says Emma Henderson, the global marketing manager for Scottish Leader.

“This long-established, well-awarded whisky brand stands for the richer possibilities brought on by exploring new perspectives and investigating new possibilities. And this is exactly what has enabled Scottish Leader to realise its new perfectly balanced, singular sweeter and smokier expressions.

“To cement and reflect the new Scottish Leader ethos, we are encouraging consumers to look at all things in a new light, to see the potential others can’t and to make a difference.”

One of the world’s favourite whiskies, Scottish Leader is sold in more than 60 counties. The brand not only has a new-look but has also redeveloped its original recipe, upping the single malt content of Scottish Leader Original that was first unveiled in South Africa in November 2014 before going world-wide. South Africans have also been the first to try the all-new, very premium Scottish Leader Signature. With this blend, master distiller Ian MacMillan and his team have amplified the island malts influence to give Scotch lovers a new, complex and layered whisky offering with a very rich, smoky profile.

It was launched in South Africa at the end of May and is currently flighting on channels including eTV; SABC 1, 2 and 3; Channel O; Mzansi Magic; Africa Magic Entertainment SA; M-Net Series Zone; SuperSport 3 and 4; Vusi Amp; Mzansi Wethu; and MTV Base.
