New breed of nosing expert joins whisky club as ‘Master Sniffer’

It may sound barking mad, but the world’s first whisky sniffer dog has been appointed by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

A dog’s sense of smell is 50 times more sensitive than humans, so Golden Retriever Chaucer has joined the whisky club’s prestigious Tasting Panel in Edinburgh to help sniff out the finest whiskies for bottling.

The first whisky to be unleashed by Master Sniffer, Chaucer, is a pedigree single malt called ‘Barking Mad’, Cask D1.1. With notes of “malty biscuits” and “smoky meat”, ‘Barking Mad’ is available from 1st April in limited quantities.

Cask 27 Gives Up Its Secrets: Bottle Number One from Speyside Distillery First Distillation Auctioned Off – Scotch Whisky News

AA Cask 27 Auction

Cask 27 gives up its secrets: bottle number one from Speyside Distillery first distillation auctioned off

The first bottle in a limited edition release of the first distillation from Speyside Distillery has fetched £650 at auction. Bottle number 1 from Cask 27 – the final cask to be filled from the first distillate in December 1990 – was bought by a bidder at the auction room.

The bottle went under the hammer at McTear’s Auctioneers and was bought by whisky enthusiast James Robertson, owner of the Kempock Bar in Gourock, near Glasgow.

Only 249 bottles from Cask 27 now remain. A further 25 of these will be auctioned by McTear’s in a 10-day online auction starting on Friday (March 25, 2016) and the remainder will be sold through a network of hand-selected distributors worldwide.

Demand for the rare bottles is expected to be high, particularly in Greater China where the SPEY brand is a household name. There have also been enquiries from Scotch whisky enthusiasts from all over Europe who are eager not to miss out on the opportunity to buy a unique piece of the distillery’s history.

Speyside Distillery chief executive officer John Harvey McDonough says. “It was a very emotional experience for myself and our managing director, Patricia Dillon to watch the bidding take place, knowing that we were sharing a very special piece of our history with the world.

“We are delighted that this historic bottle has found a home, and that it is about to start a new chapter in its life. Whether it has been bought to be enjoyed or to take pride of place on a collection shelf, I am sure the owner will enjoy it.”

McTear’s whisky specialist, Stephen McGinty, adds, “Over the years McTear’s has auctioned some of the world’s most exclusive whiskies and there is no doubt the first distillation from Speyside Distillery fits very firmly in this category.

“Not surprisingly, given the significance of the bottle, there was huge interest in the lot, with collectors at home and overseas ensuring there was lively bidding on the day.   This is a magnificent whisky and we are delighted that it has achieved such a good price at auction.”

Speyside Distillery is located in the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands and is home to the SPEY brand of single malt Scotch whisky.

The distillery was founded in 1990 by local businessman George Christie on the site of a former grain mill. It took him 30 years to achieve his dream of building a distillery, with the renovation work being undertaken completely by hand over a 30-year period.

Bottles at 55.1% cask strength from American oak casks, Cask 27 is natural colour and non-chill filtered. It is light golden in colour, with a refreshing, delicate aroma of fruits with hints of vanilla and honey. The taste is of subtle vanilla, with a smooth crème brulee flavor. Cask 27 has a mild, fresh citrus fruit finish.

The whisky is presented in a humidor box with hand written label, numbered bottle and is also wax stamped with the wording – 1990 year of 1st distillation. It is completed with a certificate of authenticity signed by the CEO.  The RRP will be set following the 10 day auction.

THE GLENROTHES REBRANDS ‘ALBA RESERVE’ AS THE BOURBON CASK RESERVE – Scotch Whisky News

GR_Bourbon_Cask_700ml_bot_LR

THE GLENROTHES REBRANDS ‘ALBA RESERVE’ AS THE BOURBON CASK RESERVE

Berry Bros. & Rudd Spirits is delighted to announce the launch of the Bourbon Cask Reserve from award-winning Speyside distillery, The Glenrothes.

In a bid to be more transparent, The Glenrothes has renamed the expression ‘Alba Reserve’ as the Bourbon Cask Reserve. The name has been changed for the sake of simplicity and to aid consumer understanding.

The first certified kosher whisky from the highly-regarded Speyside distillery – Bourbon Cask Reserve is matured exclusively in American oak refill bourbon casks and laid to rest in the warehouse, allowing the whisky to pull the aromas and flavours embedded in the grain of the wood.

The Glenrothes’ normal wood policy uses a combination of Spanish and American oak, seasoned with sherry, bourbon and refill Scotch. Of those only bourbon is 100% kosher. Despite the level of residual sherry in The Glenrothes measuring no more than 1250 parts per million, sherry is not kosher. So The Glenrothes developed an expression to satisfy Orthodox Jewish whisky enthusiasts as well as other aficionados of The Glenrothes.

Bourbon Cask Reserve was authenticated by Rabbi Padwa of the London Beth Din in March 2009 and annually thereafter. A stamp from the London Beth Din certifying the whisky’s kosher status appears on the back label.

According to Doug McIvor, Spirits Buyer for Berry Bros. & Rudd; “The Bourbon Cask Reserve hits all the right notes. The most soft, succulent, sweet and satisfying Speyside single malt I have ever come across.” As ‘Alba Reserve’ it won a Double Gold at San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The Glenrothes believe that maturity matters more than age; this is the philosophy that underpins the Vintages as well as the Reserve Selections. Each expression has its own unique personality, and this expression is described as “coconut and vanilla, rich and sweet.”

The Glenrothes Bourbon Cask Reserve 40% ABV Appearance:  Pale straw, clear and bright.  Bouquet:                 Fresh, floral, coconut, American oak vanilla. Palate:          Soft mellow, crème brûlée and berry fruits. Finish:           Smooth, sweet, medium length.

The Glenrothes Bourbon Cask Reserve is already available in the USA and will be gradually rolled out into key markets; it will be priced at £45 (€ 59, US$ 55, NT$ 2,600) per bottle.

www.theglenrothes.com

Notes:

The Glenrothes was founded in 1879.

Only 3% of the distillery capacity is bottled as Single Malt to ensure exceptional quality.

Of the 22 Vintages released to date, 14 have entirely sold out.

The Glenrothes is an award-winning Speyside Single Malt Whisky of exceptional quality. A combination of many factors, including our unusually slow distillation process in tall copper pot stills, deliver our characteristic sweet, fruity and elegant spirit. Further flavours are derived from our extensive knowledge of maturation in oak casks. Each expression has its own unique personality, underpinned by the distinctive, hallmark characteristics of the distillery – ripe fruits, citrus, vanilla and an exquisite spicy finish all encased in the creamiest of textures and with a complex and well-poised balance.

The Glenrothes is only selected for bottling when it has reached its zenith of maturity; each cask is carefully checked, nosed and tasted many times. An age statement does not reveal the maturity of the whisky and so the Glenrothes is bottled only when ready, meaning mature and at its peak of perfection. Malt whisky matures at its own pace as shown by the two casks selected.

Coast to Coast – Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd Has Exciting Plans – Scotch Whisky News

Coast to Coast – Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd Has Exciting Plans

The award-winning Isle of Arran Distillery has plans to establish a second site on the island, at Lagg on the south coast of Arran, as they expand to accommodate increased production and visitor numbers.

Now in its 21st year, the distillery is currently adding the finishing touches to expansion at Lochranza including two new pot stills and a blending room. The potential new location in Lagg will allow for further storage and production as well as a new visitor centre to welcome the growing number of visitors to the island in search of the Arran water of life.

Euan Mitchell, managing director of Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd said: “This is a very exciting time for the business. Demand for The Arran Malt continues to grow and each season visitor numbers to the Lochranza site in the north of the island increase greatly.

“Lagg is steeped in the history of whisky making on the island and we intend to uphold that tradition. The area in which we hope to establish our new facility was the location for a 19th Century distillery. It closed in 1837 and prior to our formation in 1995 was the last legal still on Arran.

“We hope that, subject to planning permission, the Lagg distillery will allow us the capacity to introduce more people to Single Malt Scotch whisky from Arran and provide the same warm welcome on the south of the island that visitors enjoy at Lochranza.”

More information on the new distillery and visitor centre will be released as the project develops.

Laphroaig Launches Exquisite New Single Malt – Laphroaig Lore. “The richest of the rich” – Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig launches exquisite new single malt – Laphroaig Lore.

“The richest of the rich”

Tuesday 22 March 2016: To celebrate a legacy of producing the world’s most richly flavoured single malt, Laphroaig announces the highly-anticipated launch of Laphroaig Lore, known as the richest of the rich.

Lore

A body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth.

Distributed by Maxxium UK and crafted by Laphroaig Distillery Manager John Campbell, Laphroaig Lore is drawn from a variety of casks including first-fill Bourbon barrels, quarter casks and Oloroso Sherry hogsheads to create a unique richness.

As the name suggests, this new expression is inspired by traditions and tales passed down from generation to generation of Laphroaig’s Distillery Managers since 1815.

Legend has it the Laphroaig lore began around 1800 when brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston invented and crafted a recipe for an extraordinarily rich single malt, even before the Laphroaig distillery officially existed in 1815. The recipe was further developed and refined in the 1920s by Laphroaig Distillery Manager, Ian Hunter, who pioneered the use of ex-Bourbon casks. Further chapters were added by the 20th century’s only female Scotch whisky distiller, Bessie Williamson, and by luminaries such as Iain Henderson.

Campbell comments: “Over the generations, distillery managers like me have made their own contributions to the quality and character of Laphroaig. From the founding of Laphroaig, these custodians have each made their own mark, whether it was drying the malting barley at lower temperatures than most, using two sizes of spirit still, pioneering the use of ex-Bourbon barrels, or reintroducing the quarter cask to Scotch whisky-making. Each of these decisions have made Laphroaig the unique, premium whisky it is today. We make the whisky we make because of what has been passed on down to us.”

Campbell adds: “Laphroaig Lore is the story of Laphroaig itself. It’s a massive whisky, as bold as it is deep, and one that I sincerely hope does justice to the many generations of Laphroaig distillery managers. It’s our story, bottled, the richest of the rich.”

Tasting notes:

COLOUR: Deep mahogany.

NOSE: Rich and smoky with seaside minerals and a hint of ash and bitter chocolate drops. Vanilla follows with oily unroasted chestnuts and a hint of fudge with a malty sweetness. A drop of water adds a creamy clotted cream note with fruit appearing in the form of unripe citrus in a flan glaze.

PALATE: Richly peaty with a spicy chilli bite.

FINISH: Short dry finish and a long sweet aftertaste.

This finest of Scotch whiskies is bottled at 48% ABV and will be available in luxury retailers and whisky specialists including Hedonism and The Whisky Exchange from 22nd March 2016 (700ml) priced at £85 (RRP).

Notes:

  • Laphroaig is the No.1 selling Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky globally
  • Unmistakably peat-smoke flavours are delivered by burning local Islay peat, containing unique traces of sea-weed and heather.
  • One of only a few distilleries that still uses traditional malting floors and dries and infuses its own malt with the thick blue smoke from old peat-fired kilns.
  • The Friends of Laphroaig programme keeps fans of the brand up to date with special offers and news from distillery manager, John Campbell. On signing up, members are allocated their own square foot of land on Is-lay, and their names are added to the members’ book in the friends lounge at the distillery. Members who visit the distillery are invited to collect their ‘rent’ – a dram of Laphroaig. The community comprises more than 700,000 like-minded Scotch fans.

The Whisky Exchange “Laphroaig Lore – peaty knowledge” – Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig Lore – peaty knowledge

With a year of 200th birthday celebrations behind them, you’d think that the folks at Laphroaig might want to have a rest. That’s not their style, and they have kicked off 2016 with a new ongoing release – Laphroaig Lore.

The idea behind Laphroaig Lore comes in two parts – the taste and the name. The former comes from Laphroaig’s tagline: ‘the most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies’. While Laphroaig is typically pretty rich – smoky and intensely flavoured – there isn’t a whisky in the lineup designated ‘the most richly flavoured of all Laphroaig whiskies’. With the release of Lore, that has changed: its tagline is ‘the richest of the rich’.

AA TWE1

It’s sometimes sunny on Islay

The name comes from how Laphroaig has run over its 201-year life. According to the dictionary, ‘lore’ means:

‘a body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth’

That’s the way that many distilleries, Laphroaig among them, pass on the skills required to make their whisky rather than anyone else’s. Bessie Williamson, who inherited the distillery from the last of the founding Johnston family, is considered the final generation of family ownership, but since she retired in 1972, the knowledge of how Laphroaig is made has been passed down through a series of managers. John Campbell is seventh in that line and was part of the team who created Lore.

To build Lore, John and the blending team pulled apart from the core flavours of Laphroaig, dividing them up into four categories. As John put it:

‘Laphroaig needs to be peaty, which is a bit of a no-brainer. For me, it needs to be fruity as well. It’s probably third or fourth flavour down the list, but you also get floral notes. And while I don’t generally like dry whiskies, all the best Laphroaigs are dry.’

It’s a mix of different casks types and ages – first-fill sherry, first-fill bourbon, refill bourbon and whisky finished in European-oak sherry casks are all in the recipe, with each element reinforcing one of the core flavours – older bourbon-cask-matured whisky for floral, refill bourbon and sherry for different kinds of fruit, younger whisky for dryness, and rich peat smoke from all of them.

AA TWE2

LAPHROAIG LORE, 48% ABV

Nose: Oily and sweet – soft olive oil, baked apples and touches of sweet sultana. Warm leather and coal smoke sit behind, with carbolic soap, TCP, freshly laid tarmac and dry ash. Between those two extremes is a rich grassy note, a combination of chlorophyll bitterness, sweet green grass and peppery olive oil. Candied sweetness as it sits in the glass – banana chips and dried tropical fruit.

Palate: Richly textured and, again, oily on the palate. It starts gently, with soft spice, honeysuckle and lightly sweetened lemonade, before the richness rolls in: charcoal, ash, tar, sweet-smelling leather, pungent pipe tobacco, raisins, stewed plums, toasted marshmallows, and sharp apples and their skins. After the initial burst of flavour, things settle down and reveal a dry and ashy core with a mineral, coastal and medicinal character – classic Laphroaig.

Finish: A burst of sweet apple is joined by ash and forest puddles. The darker flavours fade, leaving anise, apple, green grass and a hint of riverbank earth.

Comment: A Laphroaig that definitely fulfils the brief – it’s rich. Not rich as in ‘heavily sherried’, but intense and powerful, with excellent complexity.

Its dry smokiness reminds me of last year’s Islay Festival bottling, which only used peaty barley malted on Laphroaig’s own traditional malting floor; the fruitiness is reminiscent of older bottlings; and the ashy core is typical of more modern releases – it’s a combination of Laphroaig styles from over the years and combines them well. A worthy addition to the range.

Laphroaig Lore is now available on The Whisky Exchange website. You can learn more about the history of Laphroaig in this post from last year’s Islay Festival.

Old Pulteney on Top of the World as 1989 Vintage Crowned Best Single Malt – Scotch Whisky News

Old Pulteney Logo II .jpg

Old Pulteney on Top of the World as 1989 Vintage Crowned Best Single Malt

The team at Pulteney Distillery in Wick is celebrating one of its greatest triumphs to date in the global industry, after Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage was crowned the ‘World’s Best Single Malt’.

The extraordinary achievement was announced last night (Thursday 17th March) at Whisky Magazine’s prestigious World Whiskies Awards, hosted at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London.

Only the world’s most exceptional whiskies are nominated, and with a record number of entries this year leading to tough competition, Old Pulteney has even greater cause to celebrate this accolade.

The ‘Maritime Malt’ released its peated Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage in September 2015 as the embodiment of Pulteney Distillery’s renowned craftsmanship. Its distinctive smoky character comes from maturation in hand-selected American oak ex-bourbon barrels, which previously held heavily peated malt.

Old Pulteney Senior Brand Manager Margaret Mary Clarke was thrilled to hear news of the success. She commented: “This is a wonderful win for everyone at Pulteney Distillery and we couldn’t be more proud to have our 1989 Vintage recognised as the world’s best single malt. When we released the whisky last year it was a real hit with whisky enthusiasts and Old Pulteney devotees, who already recognise the quality and character of our full range of fine single malts. Last night’s award is another great testament to the dedicated Distillery team up in Wick whose passion and skill for creating incredible malt whiskies continue to be recognised around the world.”

The Managing Editor of Whisky Magazine, Mr Rupert Wheeler said: “This year has seen a record number of entries into our World Whiskies Awards and the Icons of Whisky continue to grow with the addition of new categories. I was delighted to have met so many guests last night, all of which make the whisky industry a pleasure to be a part of. The evening went extremely well and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the judges and sponsors of all of our awards. We look forward to doing it all over again next year.”

Each distinctively designed bottle of Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage is natural in colour, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46%. On the palate it is peaty to start, with a heavy, spicy underpinning and notes of vanilla, coconut and oranges giving this indulgent single malt a long-lasting finish.

Old Pulteney has been acclaimed for its excellence many times over. Old Pulteney’s 21 Year Old Single Malt holds the coveted title of ‘World Whisky of the Year’ for 2012 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible – one of the industry’s highest accolades. The whisky also achieved top ten status in the UK single malt market in 2012 and is flourishing in many other countries around the world.

Founded in 1826 at the height of Wick’s herring boom, Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland. It is this unique maritime heritage that gives the whisky its identity as the ‘Maritime Malt’. A long-held favourite for whisky enthusiasts, many say they can taste a faint hint of the sea in Old Pulteney thanks to the Distillery’s windswept location and close proximity to the North Sea.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Old Pulteney is one of the world’s finest and most distinctive single malt Scotch whiskies. Known as the ‘Maritime Malt’, it is crafted in the windswept coastal town of Wick, home to the Pulteney Distillery which is one of the most northerly on the Scottish mainland. The distillery was established in 1826 in the heart of ‘Pulteneytown’, the town created to house fishermen during Wick’s famous herring boom which drew a fleet of over 1000 boats and 7000 workers to this remote and rugged harbour.

Old Pulteney is the embodiment of this place, its people and its remarkable history. The skilled Pulteney Distillery team continues to craft whisky using the most traditional and time-honoured techniques that most others have long abandoned. This includes the uniquely shaped Pulteney stills, which are reflected in the design of the Old Pulteney bottle on shelves today.

Matured in hand-selected oak casks, the resulting whisky has been acclaimed for its excellence, its smooth drinking style and faint hint of the sea. Old Pulteney holds the coveted title of ‘World Whisky of the Year’ for 2012 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible – one of the industry’s highest accolades. The whisky also achieved top ten status in the UK single malt market in 2012 and is flourishing in many other countries around the world.

Old Pulteney continues to celebrate all things related to its maritime heritage and is renowned for its long standing support of sailing adventure across the globe. In 2015 the whisky announced a partnership to raise vital funds for the global maritime charity The Mission to Seafarers, the organisation that cares for the world’s 1.5 million men and women who face danger each day while working at sea. Old Pulteney will donate £1 from every bottle of Old Pulteney 12 Year Old sold in 2015 to the charity, aiming to raise £30,000 to support their work providing counsel and friendship for merchant seafarers in need – whether they are stranded, isolated or far from home.
