Booker’s Batch #4 – Jimmy’s Batch – American Whiskey News

ABOUT BOOKER’S® “JIMMY’s BATCH”

The fourth release of the Booker’s® Bourbon 2024 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2024-04 “Jimmy’s Batch.” This batch is named in honor of Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, living legend for bourbon lovers everywhere, and one of my dad’s dearest peers, competitors, and most importantly friends. Jimmy was like a second father to me after dad passed away, and I’ve learned a hell of a lot from him over the years. There are many life lessons to thank him for, but here are a few that stand out to me.

Once at a bourbon festival, Jimmy came up to Dad and me and poured out three glasses of a whiskey he wanted us to taste. It was some real nice stuff, and when Dad asked what it was, Jimmy said it was something new he was working on, something special. I thought it was pretty cool to bring a new product to a competitor and ask what they think. It showed me the importance of trust and camaraderie, and just how much those old timers respected each other.

The other big thing Jimmy taught me was to treat everybody like I wanted to be treated. When we went to events at bars or liquor stores, he always stayed late to make sure everyone got their picture taken and their bottle signed. It’s easy to take for granted that we get to do what we do because of the people that stand in line for our whiskey, but Jimmy never did.

Just like Dad, there are few things Jimmy loves more than a damn good bottle of bourbon. So, cheers to him and the mentorship he’s given me through thick and thin all these years. I hope you get to share a glass with company as good and true as Jimmy.

— FRED NOE, BEAM FAMILY 7TH GENERATION MASTER DISTILLER

MASTER DISTILLER’S NOTES

The fourth and final batch of Booker’s Bourbon for 2024 is a tribute to a cherished friend of the Noe family, Jimmy Russel. A close friend to my dad and a second father figure to me since my dad’s passing in 2004. The breakdown of this batch is as follows:

  • 12% came from the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse Z
  • 20% came from the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse 1
  • 46% came from the 3rd floor of 7-story warehouse 3
  • 22% came from the 4th floor of 7-story warehouse Q

This batch was made up of 3 production dates stored in 4 different warehouses. It stands at 125.8 proof and the age is 7 years, 9 months, and 19 days. It boasts a rich amber color shaped by the charred white oak barrels it aged in until the barrels were dumped. I first tasted this batch at my kitchen table, and its aroma filled the whole room. That first sip is sweet and smooth, and the way the vanilla notes mixes with the brown spice notes is just right- inviting you in for another taste. The finish is very pleasant and relaxing in taste.

I am really proud to put this batch together for Jimmy, and I know my dad would have loved seeing a batch of his namesake bourbon dedicated to his great friend.

House of Vintages Announces Release of Collector-Grade BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon, an Object of Prophecy – Bourbon Whiskey News

House of Vintages Announces Release of Collector-Grade BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon, an Object of Prophecy

POULTNEY, VT, UNITED STATES, December 2, 2024  BHAKTA Spirits, the world’s preeminent House of Vintages, announced today the launch of the rarest, oldest, and most storied whiskey yet offered from its spirits library, BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon (SRP $1,000). Only 555 bottles will see release.

Crowned with a gilded “hood ornament” topper of BHAKTA Spirits Founder Raj Peter Bhakta astride an elephant, this lavish single vintage bourbon solidifies the brand’s ascent into the upper echelon of the status spirits segment.

Distilled in Tennessee, BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon’s maturation journey carried it across two continents, three distinct casks, and four unique climates — the Smoky Mountains, the Green Mountains, the sweeping plains of Indiana, and the chilly climes of Glasgow. While in Scotland, it aged in a former Rolls-Royce factory famed for having once produced the “Merlin” aircraft engines that powered Allied fighter planes to victory in WWII’s Battle of Britain.

BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon completed its final aging within the BHAKTA-GRISWOLD Spirits Library of the brand’s college campus headquarters, where it was finished in a notably spectacular barrel of BHAKTA 1975 Armagnac (SRP $379).

Nineteen-year-old bourbons are normally no good — like the ones many collectors currently chase. But ‘The Elijah Prophecy,’ elevated by its Armagnac pedigree, sets a new benchmark for collectability.”

— Raj Peter Bhakta

Bottled at cask strength of 107.4 proof and offered at 19 years and 3 months of age, this rare bourbon is an unusual distillation of 84% corn, 8% rye, and 8% malted barley. It represents a major new discovery for collectors in search of specificity and decadence.

“Nineteen-year-old bourbons are normally no good — like the ones many collectors currently chase,” notes Founder Raj Peter Bhakta. “But none have ever tasted quite like this. Because of its astounding odyssey of aging and elevation, and in no small part due to its final education in Armagnac, BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon sets a new benchmark for collectability. May its prophecy bring you good fortune, as it has for me.”

As a result of its triple cask maturation, Armagnac pedigree, and astonishing age, this exquisite new entry into the category offers the sort of sensory experience rare among even the world’s most sought-after high-end bourbons. BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon shows an intricate flavor profile of blood orange, oak spice, leather, Moroccan chamomile, heirloom tobacco, and antebellum molasses. And where words of superlative should fall short, the extra inches of altitude endowed by its gleaming, elephantine adornment ensure its position as a literal cut above its competitors.

The historically accurate bottle topper depicts Raj Peter Bhakta’s “Crossing of the Rio Grande” (2006), a viral Congressional campaign stunt that buoyed his longshot bid for Pennsylvania’s 13th District into the national zeitgeist. Each BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon arrives lavishly packaged in a glass-windowed wooden box handcrafted by Andrew Bosela of Wild Roots Woodworking, in partnership with the College of St. Joseph the Worker’s woodshop of Steubenville, Ohio. Honoring BHAKTA’s spirit of both tradition and innovation, these bespoke bottle boxes inspired by Gothic and Art Deco architecture have been crafted from Osage, walnut, and padauk.

BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon also symbolizes an inflection point in the life and times of Bhakta the man. As his inaugural barrel acquisition following his departure from WhistlePig, the iconic American whiskey brand he founded in 2007, this scarce vintage has long remained a closely guarded personal treasure. So closely guarded, in fact, that the cask has been granted its final years of rest within Bhakta’s personal residence. Closer still, these 555 bottles of naught-five bourbon have earned a most intimate moniker — “The Elijah Prophecy” — an homage to Bhakta’s fifth child, who was born on the fifth day of the fifth month of this year. The prophecy has revealed that all who hold these bottles will be blessed with magnificent good fortune.

While just the brand’s fifth-ever whiskey vintage, BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon is the first to break four figures upon release. It is positioned as the highest-reaching whiskey expression yet offered from the BHAKTA House of Vintages — a triumph memorialized with its opulent hood ornament topper and extravagantly handcrafted bottle box. The new release joins a distinguished competitive set of Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year Family Reserve, Michter’s 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon, and Elijah Craig Single Barrel Bourbon 20 Years Old.

BHAKTA 2005 Bourbon will be available at select retailers and preferred restaurants. Private collectors will have the opportunity to acquire it through the BHAKTA Spirits Private Client Program. A highly limited number of its 555 bottles will be offered to loyal online customers through the brand’s website; ultimately, what scarce stock remains over the years to come will be available only on the secondary market.

To ensure fulfillment of “The Elijah Prophecy” — and to guarantee delivery of the magnificent blessings of good fortune offered by this landmark release — enthusiasts are advised to act quickly.

The Annual Van Winkle Whiskey Collection Returns, Yielding Additional Older Bottles in the 2024 Season – American Whiskey News

The Annual Van Winkle Whiskey Collection Returns, Yielding Additional Older Bottles in the 2024 Season

Old Rip Van Winkle and Buffalo Trace Distilleries confirm the 20 and 23-year-old barrels produced more bottles than typical this season

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Dec. 12, 2024) – Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery and Buffalo Trace Distillery are proud to announce the return of the Van Winkle Whiskey Collection. Renowned for its wheated recipe, the Van Winkle Collection features six distinctive whiskeys. The wheated recipe, favored by Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, results in a softer, smoother taste profile that has helped the bourbon become among the world’s most coveted. Complimenting the bourbons, the Collection’s 13-year-old rye whiskey offers a more subtle spice due to its lower rye content. Excitingly, this year’s release includes a surplus of 20-Year-Old and 23-Year-Old Family Reserve Bourbons.

“There’s an incomparable feeling of joy that comes from finding a bottle of Pappy on the shelf,” said Julian Van Winkle III, President, Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery. “This season, we’re excited that connoisseurs have a greater chance to enjoy our older expressions, thanks to an exceptional yield from these barrels.”

The Van Winkle Collection vintages are on shelves now in stores, bars and restaurants across the United States at varying retail prices. Due to the extended aging process, which results in significant evaporation and lower barrel yields, supply is limited. The suggested retail prices for the limited-edition Van Winkle collection bottles are as follows:

  • Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10-Year-Old – $129.99

At 107 proof, the nose of this 10-year-old bourbon reveals rich oak spice layered with subtle hints of licorice and dark cherry. On the palate, a well-rounded body showcases deep flavors of oak, tobacco, and sweet fruit. The finish of this Old Rip Van Winkle classic is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of dark cherry and soft tobacco.

  • Old Rip Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon 12-Year-Old – $149.99

Ripe stone fruit and chocolate dominate the aroma of this 90.4 proof bourbon, setting the stage for a honeyed sweetness on the palate. Balanced by gentle oak and a whisper of tobacco, the flavors meld seamlessly. The finish is slightly dry with a pleasant tingle.

  • Old Rip Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13-Year-Old – $199.99

Roasted nuts, oaky vanilla, and ripe fruit highlight the aroma of the 95.6 proof rye in the Van Winkle family. On the palate, chocolate and spice intertwine with caramel richness and a touch of oak dryness. The complex finish showcases gentle baking spices and roasted caramel for a perfectly balanced experience.

  • Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 15-Year-Old– $199.99

Untouched for 15 years and unhurried by time, caramel corn and vanilla dominate the nose of this 107 proof whiskey, offering a warm prelude to the palate’s sweet, smooth entry. Rich notes of leather, oak, and dark fruit add depth and complexity, concluding with lingering hints of spice and oaky tannins.

  • Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 20-Year-Old– $319.99

Warm holiday spices blend with caramel sweetness and delicate notes of chocolate on the nose of this 20-year-old, 90.4 proof vintage. The palate delivers a harmonious mix of caramel, cinnamon sugar, and subtle spice, offering a rich, layered experience. A slightly dry and oaky finish reflects two decades of careful aging, leaving a lasting impression.

  • Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 23-Year-Old – $449.99

The nose of Pappy’s 23-Year-Old Bourbon presents a perfect harmony of toasty caramel, soft cream, and nuanced notes of oak, nuts, and leather. On the palate of the 95.6 proof expression, vanilla, maple, and honey meet citrus and gentle spice. The finish is slightly dry, with a lingering balance of leather and oak.

The Van Winkle family reminds fans that neither they nor Buffalo Trace Distillery control the prices individual retailers charge for the expressions. The best chance to find Van Winkle products at a fair price is through lotteries offered by many retailers, where consumers can purchase bottles from the Collection at MSRP.

“Ultimately, the only legal and reputable source consumers should be buying from is a licensed retailer,” noted ORVW President Julian P. Van Winkle III. “This is the safest, foolproof way to ensure your bottle is not counterfeit.”

Whiskey fans increase their risks of purchasing phony bottles by purchasing from secondary markets and online sellers including Craigslist, eBay, and social media groups. Many alcohol scams take place overseas, and while rare in the United States, in some cases, consuming alcohol from outside the system can lead to bodily harm and even casualties.

Whiskey buyers who believe they have been scammed should not drink out of their bottle. They should also file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, contact their State Attorney General’s office, and contact their credit card company about its fraud protection policies.

About Van Winkle Bourbon

The Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery has a four-generation history. The Van Winkle family’s involvement in the bourbon industry began in the late 1800s with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr. He was a traveling salesman for the W.L. Weller and Sons wholesale house in Louisville. Pappy and a friend and fellow Weller salesman Alex Farnsley eventually bought the wholesale house and also partnered with Mr. A. Ph. Stitzel on the purchase of Mr. Stitzel’s distillery.  The three of them merged the two companies and became the Stitzel-Weller Distillery after Prohibition.

In May of 1935 at the age of 61, Pappy opened the newly completed Stitzel-Weller Distillery in South Louisville. Its prominent brands were W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, and Cabin Still.  Pappy had a heavy influence on the operations there until his death at the age of 91. His son, Julian, Jr. took over operations until he was forced by stockholders to sell the distillery in 1972. The rights to all of their brands were sold to Norton Simon, Inc. Later, United Distillers, who eventually ended up with the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, sold off all of the original labels around 1999.

After selling the distillery, Julian Jr. resurrected a pre-Prohibition label, the only one to which the Van Winkles kept the rights, called Old Rip Van Winkle. He used whiskey stocks from the old distillery to supply his brand. Julian Jr.’s son, Julian, III took over in 1981 when Julian, Jr. passed away. Julian III has continued with the Van Winkle tradition of producing high-quality wheated bourbon. His son, Preston, joined the company in 2001 and the Van Winkles look to continue that tradition for generations to come.

In 2002 the Van Winkles entered into a joint venture with Buffalo Trace Distillery in Franklin County, Frankfort, Ky, joining the Van Winkle and Weller Bourbons again in one production house.  It was a natural tie since the wheated mash bill used in the Weller Bourbons was already being produced at Buffalo Trace.  All of the Van Winkle’s whiskey production now takes place at Buffalo Trace Distillery under the same strict guidelines the family has always followed. For more information on the Van Winkle family of bourbon please visit www.oldripvanwinkle.com.

These two releases mark a significant milestone for the distillery, symbolising the culmination of years of meticulous craftsmanship, patience, and dedication to traditional whisky-making methods. They reflect both time and commitment and they showcase not only the depth of character that has developed over eight years but also the distillery’s continued evolution. These age-statement whiskies are a celebration of Bimber’s journey and a testament to the artistry and care poured into every cask, solidifying its reputation as a leading light in craft whisky production.

Speaking of the launch of Harmony of Eight and Bimber 8 year old Single Cask Edition, Bimber Director Ewelina Chruszczyk said: “We are immensely proud to introduce our first age statement whiskies – a reflection of eight years of passion, precision, and unwavering dedication to our craft. These releases are more than just a measure of time; they embody the journey we’ve taken, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the bright future that lies ahead for Bimber.”

Chivas Regal Brings A Smooth And Smoky Twist To Its Extra Range With New Extra Smoky Cask Selection – Scotch Whisky News

Chivas Regal Brings A Smooth And Smoky Twist To Its Extra Range With New Extra Smoky Cask Selection

Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection is the latest expression to be released from the iconic blended Scotch, combining the richness of the traditional Chivas Regal house style with the gentle taste of smooth smoke. Launching exclusively in Turkey before being rolled out globally, this new blend has been selectively finished in smoky whisky casks previously housing peated whisky, bringing additional depth and flavour to the renowned Chivas Regal Extra range.

Smoky casks have always been an integral part of the Chivas Regal blend, but previously these notes were very subtle on the palate. Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection takes these notes to a new level, further elevating the smoky flavours and delivering a more distinctive smoky character to the smooth, deep flavours of the blend. The new expression features rich notes of spiced apples and roasted chestnuts on the nose, with fresh cranberries, sweet caramel, and gingerbread on the palate – finished with star anise and a warming touch of bonfire smoke.

Sandy Hyslop, Chivas Regal Master Blender, comments:

“With a focus on quality and a spirit of innovation, we are always seeking to elevate the experience for the modern whisky drinker – and Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection does just that. By driving the idea of adding ‘extra’ flavour to our whiskies through new and exciting extra cask finishes, we are responding to consumer demand and exploring new flavour profiles in Scotch. The deep and rich notes in our latest expression bring a new and sophisticated edge to the Chivas Regal Extra range, offering whisky lovers a smooth and smoky tasting experience.”

The primary focus on flavour within the Chivas Regal Extra range sets it apart from other products in the Chivas Regal portfolio, reflecting the adventurous tastes of today’s drinkers. The launch of Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection is supported by a range of easy-to-make-at-home cocktail recipes including Smoky Espresso and Smoky Basil Smash, providing consumers with a modern Scotch whisky taste experience. These innovative cocktails are crafted to enhance the versatility of the smoky blend, offering whisky enthusiasts a fresh and exciting way to experience Chivas Regal. Whether it’s a smoky twist on a classic cocktail or a completely new creation, these serves make it simple for consumers to explore and enjoy the distinct character of Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection in a unique way. This initiative not only caters to the growing consumer demand for new flavour profiles in Scotch but also opens up new and engaging drinks experiences, making sophisticated whisky cocktails accessible to all.

The packaging of Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection is specifically designed to reflect the smoky hues of the blend, featuring charcoal colouring and golden flowing lines throughout. These elements are intertwined with the classic Chivas Regal shield and crossed spears, symbolising protection and loyalty, reflecting the brotherhood of James and John Chivas, whose entrepreneurial spirit set the groundwork for the world’s first luxury whisky.

Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection joins four other unique expressions in the Chivas Regal Extra range, each carefully crafted with a distinct flavour profile imparted from casks such as Irish Whiskey, Tequila, Rum and Oloroso Sherry.

Chivas Regal Extra Smoky Cask Selection launches exclusively in Turkey this November before being rolled out globally.  For more information, and to stay up to date with all the latest Chivas news, visit www.Chivas.com or follow us on X  @ChivasRegal
