WORLD’S FIRST PINOTAGE FINISH WHISKY LAUNCHED – South African Whisky News

three-ships-pinotage-finish-lr-03

WORLD’S FIRST PINOTAGE FINISH WHISKY LAUNCHED

When two worlds collide, the extraordinary happens.

Three Ships Whisky has launched the World and South Africa’s first whisky finished in a cask previously used for the maturation of Pinotage – the uniquely South African wine cultivar cloned in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold.

With only 3500 bottles of the 4000 bottles available for purchase by the public, the Three Ships 15 Year Old Pinotage Cask Finish is the oldest whisky to date launched in South African history and crafted by Master Distiller Andy Watts, who sought to capture the unique heritage of South Africa in creating this rich, complex and unique whisky.

“Whisky finishes are nothing new, but never before has a Pinotage cask ever been used. The idea first came to me in the early 2000s but back then our industry was still very young and the world wasn’t quite ready to accept such innovation from South Africa.

“But I had never let go of my dream so some years later I had laid grain and malt whisky to rest in American casks for the purpose of finishing the blend in Pinotage casks. That was 15 years ago. Seems like half a lifetime has passed since then! This moment of being able to stand with the finished product in my hand is, in 25 years as a master distiller, truly the pinnacle of my career. I’m literally on cloud nine!”

The grain and malt components of the whisky were first matured separately in American casks before being finish for different periods in eight casks previously used for Pinotage.

The wine casks imparted the typical Pinotage varietal character of red berry fruit and a slight earthiness to the whisky which softens the malt component and complements the sweetness of the grain. With a red berry tinge the whisky is light in style with prominent cherry, plum, tropical fruit and the typical Pinotage earthy notes on the nose. The palate is clean with hints of the banana and pineapple ending with a lingering warm finish.

The Three Ships 15 Year Old Pinotage Cask Finish is the second release in the Master’s Collection series which, over the next few years, will see a limited edition being launched each year under the Three Ships brand.

Consumers will have the chance to purchase one of the first 500 bottles on 5 October during a live, online sale by visiting www.themasterscollection.co.za/ starting at 12pm. During the sale, consumers will also have the opportunity to interact with Andy Watts by posing questions to him on @ThreeShips_MC (www.twitter.com/threeships_mc).

The remainder of the whisky will be available from 8 October, World Pinotage Day, until stocks last from selected retailers, www.vinoteque.co.za/, at The James Sedgwick Distillery and from Big Five Duty Free stores.

The whisky will retail for R1 500 per bottle.

Heaven Hill Distillery, One of the Nation’s Foremost American Whiskey Producers, Announces A Major Redesign of Flagship Elijah Craig Small Batch

New Look for Iconic Bottle Better Mirrors the Premium Spirit Within and Celebrates Its Availability for Years to Come

BARDSTOWN, Ky.—Heaven Hill Distillery, one of the nation’s foremost American whiskey producers now celebrating 81 years and three generations of family ownership, today announces a major redesign of its flagship Elijah Craig Small Batch packaging. It includes a contemporary, yet traditional new look for its iconic bottle to better mirror the premium nature of the award-winning spirit within and celebrate the company’s unwavering commitment to its availability for years to come.

“At a time when the demand for Bourbon is at record levels, we are renewing our commitment to crafting Elijah Craig Small Batch so we can have it more available for the market, rather than on allocation, inaccessibly priced or simply out of stock,” says Max L. Shapira, President, Heaven Hill Distillery, and second-generation family member. “Our new bottle design celebrates Elijah Craig Small Batch’s promise of being a premium Bourbon of the highest quality in our industry.”

Elijah Craig Small Batch is made exclusively from batches of 200 barrels or less of 8-year-old to 12-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, with a large percent from the older barrels. Now available nationwide, its mashbill, proprietary yeast, proof, and aging regimen remain the same.

The newly designed bottle is taller and has cleaner lines that better appeal to today’s discerning Bourbon drinker. Using a custom-designed mold, 1789, the year the Rev. Elijah Craig founded his distillery, is embossed on the glass. Craig is credited as “The Father of Bourbon,” who pioneered aging his Kentucky whiskey in charred oak barrels that created the spirit’s signature amber color and smooth flavor.

In addition, the brand name and Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey directly decorate the bottle to better showcase the beauty of the spirit. A small textured paper label on the bottom of the bottle’s front includes Elijah Craig’s signature, as well as product information. Crowning the bottle, its cork closure is made of wood that is stained dark brown.

“We are confident that through our stringent barrel selection process we will maintain the desired taste profile and quality that have made Elijah Craig Small Batch one of the most critically acclaimed Bourbons in the world,” says Co-Master Distiller Denny Potter. “We can do this because barrels, no matter their age, mature at different rates that depend on their location in our natural open rick warehouses. We choose only those barrels that meet our exacting standards for complexity. They are the cream of the crop that annually account for about one-half of one percent of all of our aging stocks.”

Elijah Craig Small Batch immediately catches the eye with its luxurious burnished copper colored liquid. On the nose, it is delightfully complex, with notes of vanilla bean, sweet fruit and fresh mint. On the palate, it is smooth, warm and pleasantly woody with accents of spice, smoke and nutmeg. Its finish is long, sweet and slightly toasty. With its complex taste, Elijah Craig Small Batch is enjoyed neat or on the rocks and shines in classic cocktails like the Gold Rush, Old-Fashioned and Manhattan.

The new packaging celebrates this iconic spirit that helped rekindle the Bourbon renaissance by pioneering the small batch concept back in 1986, before this term existed. It reflects Heaven Hill’s unwavering commitment to Bourbon, boasting the second-largest inventory of aging Kentucky whiskey—1.2 million barrels, over 21 percent of the world’s future supply. The company’s award-winning Bourbon Heritage Center brings to life the history, heritage and lore of Bourbon making. It is a cornerstone of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail that has attracted 2.5 million Bourbon tourists over the past five years.

About Elijah Craig Small Batch

Elijah Craig Small Batch is made exclusively from batches of 200 barrels or less of 8- to 12- year-old Bourbon. First brought to market in 1986, Heaven Hill’s Master Distillers were selecting a small number of barrels of the finest Bourbon to make Elijah Craig long before the term “small batch” even existed. It is this attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that give Elijah Craig an ideal balance of age, robust body and rich flavor. Its accolades have included a “Double Gold Medal” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and two-time “Best of the Best” Bourbon by Whisky Magazine.

This signature spirit bears the name of the Rev. Elijah Craig, “The Father of Bourbon” who established his distillery in 1789. He is credited with being the first distiller to age his Kentucky whiskey in charred oak barrels. The clear, unaged corn liquor became transformed into a bold amber liquid with a distinctively smooth flavor that makes Bourbon what it is. Produced by Heaven Hill Distillery and one of its bestselling Bourbons by case volume, it is complemented by Elijah Craig 12-Year-Old Barrel Proof, Elijah Craig 18-Year-Old Single Barrel and Elijah Craig 23-Year-Old Single Barrel in the portfolio. Jack Daniels “Our Town” – American Whiskey News

jack-logo-open-graph

You can’t aim for or feign authenticity; it’s not something that you can just try on for size like a jacket. Authentic means doing your own thing, the very best way you know how, without worrying about what everybody else is doing. And that’s exactly what Jack Daniel’s has been doing for 150 years.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey is a product not just of ingredients or process, but also of the Lynchburg, TN culture and time-honored traditions that created and preserved it for 150 years. That culture stands against superficiality, against half-truths, against losing sight of what’s important, and it stands strong. Authentic. And through a new series of films, Jack Daniel’s will honor their hometown and its people – the individuals dedicated to making the very best whiskey they can, every day.

Jack Daniel’s will kick off the series with the debut of “Our Town” – a 60-second anthem spot that shows people who they are and who they’ve always been. Created in partnership with Arnold Worldwide, “Our Town” and accompanying 60, 30 and 15-second films will highlight the people of Lynchburg – from its 5th generation residents, to a man that can lift a 526-pound barrel of whiskey, to a woman named Hiawatha Kitty McGee. The stories were designed to reinforce an emotional connection with the Jack Daniel’s faithful and provide a launching point for the next 150 years.

This launch represents a continuation of the brand’s celebration of the 150th Anniversary milestone of the Jack Daniel Distillery – the oldest registered distillery in the U.S. Earlier this year, Jack Daniel’s and Arnold launched The Jack Daniel’s Barrel Hunt to unite Friends of Jack across the globe, with 150 authentic handcrafted whiskey barrels being hidden at historic and cultural sites in more than 55 countries over the course of 90 days. The global program kicked off in Lynchburg, TN on July 1 and is running through the end of the month, September 30.

BUSHMILLS® IRISH WHISKEY INTRODUCES PORT CASK RESERVE – A RARE AND UNIQUE CASK-MATURED VARIANT, AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY IN DUTY FREE – Irish Whiskey News

BUSHMILLS® IRISH WHISKEY INTRODUCES PORT CASK RESERVE – A RARE AND UNIQUE CASK-MATURED VARIANT, AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY IN DUTY FREE

THE SECOND EDITION IN THE LIMITED RELEASE BUSHMILLS STEAMSHIP COLLECTION

Bushmills, Co. Antrim, 26 September 2016: Today, Bushmills® Irish Whiskey announced the launch of PORT CASK RESERVE – the second and latest edition in the Bushmills Steamship Collection – a rare and unique range of cask-matured Bushmills Irish Whiskeys inspired by the extraordinary voyages of the SS Bushmills steamship.

As a duty free exclusive, this new variant follows last year’s successful launch of Bushmills SHERRY CASK RESERVE, marking the 125th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the SS Bushmills.

In 1890, the SS Bushmills delivered Bushmills Irish Whiskey to new corners of the world and with it established knowledge and relationships from some of the world’s finest wine and spirit producers. With over 400 years of whiskey-making heritage and as experts in wood selection, it is these relationships that have served the Old Bushmills Distillery to this day, helping Bushmills master distillers explore the potential of maturing whiskey in exclusive and rare casks.

Helen Mulholland, Master Blender of Bushmills Irish Whiskey, said; “We pride ourselves on understanding the different nuances that different barrels impart on our whiskey. Up to 80% of the character of whiskey comes from the cask, so I make it my mission to travel to Portugal to meet with the craftsmen and estate owners from Douro Valley.

“As a region whose stony soil yields only low quantities of grapes which are of outstanding quality and perfect for making port, it is here where I personally select the best casks for PORT CASK RESERVE. After a seasoning period of at least three years they are emptied and shipped back to Bushmills to be filled with our whiskey – letting the residual flavours from the charred wood work their magic. The result is our trademark rich, complex and smooth triple-distilled single malt whiskey with subtle elegant notes of damson, black coffee and almonds.

“Bushmills PORT CASK RESERVE has a truly unique story to tell and we are thrilled to offer duty free shoppers a glimpse into the world of flavour exploration and experimentation from Ireland’s oldest distillery.”

Presented in a hand-crafted box featuring a 70cl bottle, Bushmills PORT CASK RESERVE has been fully matured in ruby port pipes which impart luscious and complex flavours of the port wine into this unique whiskey.

Priced at RSP £99 for 70cl, travellers can pick up a bottle of Bushmills PORT CASK RESERVE, alongside the SHERRY CASK RESERVE edition at selected global travel retail outlets, from November 2016.

A. Smith Bowman Distillery Releases Limited Edition Gingerbread Cocoa Finished Bourbon – American Whisky News

A. Smith Bowman Distillery Releases Limited Edition Gingerbread Cocoa Finished Bourbon

Release is Extremely Limited, Available Mostly in Virginia

Fredericksburg, VA. (Sept. 27, 2016) A. Smith Bowman Distillery announces the latest release in its Abraham Bowman line of expressions, the Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Gingerbread Cocoa Finished Bourbon.

Marrying two Virginia gems, this limited edition bourbon was aged in a special batch of barrels used by A. Smith Bowman Distillery and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery in Virginia.  The barrels originated at A. Smith Bowman in 2010, where they aged bourbon for four and a half years.  The barrels were emptied and sent to Hardywood Park Brewery to be filled with two special beers: six barrels aged Gingerbread Stout and four barrels aged Foolery Imperial Milk Stout.

Both of the beers aged inside these barrels for eight months before being emptied again and sent back to A. Smith Bowman in December 2015. They were then finally filled for the last time with bourbon that had aged for nine years inside of new charred white oak barrels. This bourbon was distilled in December of 2006 and was allowed to finish for 17 months inside these special barrels. Master Distiller Brian Prewitt determined through periodic tasting evaluations that the rich caramel and oak flavors of the bourbon had intermingled with the spice notes of gingerbread and hints of cocoa in an extraordinary way.

“This bourbon tastes of ginger, vanilla, and cinnamon topped off with notes of cocoa. The gingerbread spice aroma gives way to caramel and toasty oak and finishes with a smooth and pleasant finish,” states Prewitt.

The Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Gingerbread Cocoa Finished Bourbon is part of a series of limited edition whiskies, named after Abraham Bowman, the commander of the 8th Virginia Regiment in the American Revolutionary War. Each edition of the Abraham line is a different expression and a new release is offered a few times a year.  This is the 15th release in the Abraham line.  The Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Gingerbread Cocoa Finished Bourbon will be available for Virginia residents to purchase through the VA ABC Lottery on Thursday Sept. 29th, and in the A. Smith Bowman Distillery Visitor Center starting Oct. 1st. It will also be available in limited amounts in other states starting in mid-October. Quantities are very limited and most product will be available in Virginia. The Abraham Bowman series aims to release new and different expressions of innovative whiskey for each release, so it is unlikely this exact bourbon will be repeated. The age of this bourbon is 9 years and 8 months and it is 90 proof. It is available in a 375 ml only and suggested retail pricing is $39.99.

TOMATIN DISTILLERY TOAST SCOTLAND’S FINEST WITH AWARD-WINNING CHEF JACQUELINE O’DONNELL

Tomatin Distillery has teamed up with award-winning Scottish chef Jacqueline O’Donnell for an evening of whisky and food pairings to celebrate Scotland’s finest produce following the recent Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight.

The star of ‘The Great British Menu’ and ‘Jak and Eddie’s Scottish Kitchen’, Jacqueline O’Donnell urged customers to swap the wine for whisky as the perfect accompaniment to a meal at the exclusive event on the 22nd September at the chef’s ‘Sisters’ restaurant in Glasgow. During the evening Jacqueline and Tomatin Distillery Manager, Graham Eunson shared insights into the pairings and explored four expressions of Tomatin single malt.

Jacqueline commented ‘The complexity of our national drink means that often it can unlock more flavours than wine when paired with the right food from our natural Scotch larder. Great food and whisky have always been a perfect combination and the light, fruity characteristics of Tomatin lend well to pairings. As Scotland’s main export, we wanted to showcase the diversity of the spirit alongside a medley of local produce to offer a mouth-watering and authentic experience for our guests.’

Graham Eunson, Distillery Manager said:

‘The world of food and whisky is becoming increasingly more entwined as the vast range of flavours and styles of malt offer room for experimentation, and the growing number of chefs opting for whisky as a serious alternative to wine is really encouraging. Over the past year we’ve worked hard to reach different audiences with new look packaging and our recent cocktail range so we hope that this latest venture will continue to attract more customers to Scotch by revealing its versatility and affinity to food.’

Guests enjoyed a four course meal including cured Scottish Trout paired with Tomatin 12 year old, followed by a 5 spice Scotch lamb rump with spiced toasted hazelnut and Tomatin Cask Strength. Dessert comprised of Scotch raspberry with dark chocolate chilli tart and a Tomatin 14 year old, rounded off with Barwheys cheddar and homemade oatcakes coupled with a dram of Tomatin 18 year old.

The 2016 Offering of Yellowstone® Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Launching in October – American Whiskey News

The 2016 Offering of Yellowstone® Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Launching in October

(Lebanon, Ky.) September 27, 2016 – Limestone Branch Distillery introduces the 2016 edition of Yellowstone® Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon, set to hit the market in October. This year’s limited edition combines two extra-aged rye mashed bourbons – a stately 12-year and a bold 7-year – hand-selected and finished for several months in new toasted wine barrels. The result is a small batch legendary bourbon with a truly unique complexity and character.

“We used 28 new wine barrels with varying levels of toast – I was interested in how toasting versus charring would contribute to the bourbon,” says Steve Beam, president and distiller of Limestone Branch Distillery. “The result was a delightful nose that is full of vanilla, sweet tea and summer fruit with a hint of smoke.”

Bottled at 101 proof and available in 750ml bottles signed by Steve Beam and nestled in commemorative tubes, Yellowstone Limited Edition offers a taste profile of spiced oak, roasted coffee with creamy notes of vanilla, rich chocolate and fresh berries, and a smoky caramel finish. Approximately 7,000 bottles of this bourbon are being produced this fall at Limestone Branch Distillery, and the suggested retail price is $99.99.

“The 2016 limited edition Yellowstone is all about the subtle nuances that can be achieved through manipulating the barrel,” says Steve Beam, president and distiller of Limestone Branch Distillery. “While last year’s edition was more about big, bold flavors achieved through char and age, this year’s is softer with a subtle complexity.”

Steve Beam and his brother Paul Beam opened Limestone Branch Distillery in 2011, with the goal of crafting the finest whiskey in small batches. The distillery is known for its T.J. Pottinger Sugar Shine and Precinct No. 6 whiskey. With a history of distilling on both sides of their family – Beam and Dant – the brothers are seventh-generation distillers. In 2015, they brought the Yellowstone brand back to the family and launched a limited edition bourbon to commemorate the brand’s 105th anniversary. They also launched Yellowstone Select earlier this year.
