Glenmorangie celebrates its 175th anniversary with multi-million pound investment

Single malt whisky eyes next 175 years with plans for a new still house

Glenmorangie today marks 175 years of exceptional whisky creation by announcing its plans for a new still house. Funded by a multi-million-pound investment from The Glenmorangie Company, the expansion is designed to position the Highland Distillery for ever-greater success. Subject to planning approval, Glenmorangie aims to start work this year, for completion in 2019, ensuring that the Distillery can continue to satisfy the world’s growing appetite for its award-winning single malt Scotch whisky.

Established in 1843, Glenmorangie has long been renowned as an industry leader, marrying skill and creativity to craft wondrous whisky. A new still house would be a fitting celebration of the Distillery’s 175th anniversary, allowing Glenmorangie to increase capacity in line with rising global demand – and prepare for its next 175 years of masterful whisky creation. This new building, located in the heart of the Distillery, will work in tandem with the existing still house and showcase two more of Glenmorangie’s signature copper stills, the tallest in Scotland. Under plans, a separate building will provide additional mashing and fermentation facilities.

Marc Hoellinger, President and CEO of The Glenmorangie Company, said: “It is a testament to the success of Glenmorangie, and to the increasing appreciation of our whisky creators’ vision and expertise, that we are able to plan with confidence for the future. We have decided to invest in a new still house to support the Distillery’s growth and ensure that many more discerning single malt whisky drinkers can discover the delights of Glenmorangie.”

CHIVAS HARNESSES COMMUNITY SPIRIT IN SEARCH FOR THE 2018 CHIVAS MASTERS GLOBAL CHAMPION

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR BARTENDERS WHO CREATIVELY CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF THEIR COMMUNITY

8th January, 2018: Chivas Regal, the world’s first luxury whisky, has launched its search for the 2018 Chivas Masters Global Champion. Now in its fifth year, the Chivas Masters is a global competition that celebrates bartenders who demonstrate cutting-edge skill and creativity and share Chivas Regal’s core values of community, collaboration and generosity.

Launching in 22 countries across six continents, the Chivas Masters offers bartenders a once in a lifetime opportunity to grow their skills in a collaborative environment where they can learn from peers, alumni and industry experts from across the globe. This year, the theme of community will sit at the very heart of the competition, with the national stages challenging participants to produce a Chivas drink that is inspired by someone in their local community. The winner of each of the 22 national finals will go on to the Global Final to represent their market and compete for the coveted title of Chivas Masters Global Champion 2018.

This year’s Global Final will be hosted in the United Kingdom – both in London and at Strathisla distillery in Speyside, the spiritual home of Chivas Regal. Throughout a series of masterclasses and intense individual and team challenges, the bartenders’ skills and creativity will be tested, and they will have to prove that they can be as generous with their expertise as they are with a dram of Chivas Regal, by collaborating with their fellow finalists to achieve shared success.

At the culmination of the six-day programme, the Chivas Masters Global Champion 2018 will be crowned, and will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Tales of The Cocktail 2018 in New Orleans, and the chance to travel the world with Chivas to inspire the bartenders of the future.

Max Warner, Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal, comments:

“AT CHIVAS REGAL, WE BELIEVE THAT GENEROSITY AND SUCCESS GO HAND IN HAND – A BELIEF INSPIRED BY OUR FOUNDING BROTHERS, JAMES AND JOHN CHIVAS, WHO SHARED THEIR SUCCESS WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AS THEIR BUSINESS GREW. THESE ARE THE VALUES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE CHIVAS MASTERS RIGHT FROM THE START, AND THE REASON WHY IN 2018 WE ARE BEYOND EXCITED TO BRING THE GLOBAL FINAL HOME TO WHERE OUR BRAND, VALUES AND INDEED OUR OWN COMMUNITY WERE BORN.”

PERNOD RICARD SETS WORLDWIDE ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY EXAMPLE – Scotch Whisky News

PERNOD RICARD SETS WORLDWIDE ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY EXAMPLE

Following a global shift against the use of single use plastic straws, due to their harmful impact on our environment and oceans, Pernod Ricard is leading by example by banning the use of plastic straws and stirrers in any part of its business.

A straw which is only used on average for 20 minutes can take more than 200 years to breakdown into smaller pieces and often does not fully disintegrate. It has been reported that country-wide the UK and USA alone throw away around 550 million plastic straws every day.

Vanessa Wright, Group VP for Sustainability and Responsibility, said: “The history of Pernod Ricard and our values are intrinsically linked to social responsibility and care – it is a part of us, and the creation of the Paul Ricard Oceanography Institute more than 50 years is a concrete example. We know that this type of non-biodegradable plastic is having a detrimental impact on the environment and oceans, and for us it’s crucial that we play our role in helping to prevent any further damage.”

Local Moray MSP, Richard Lochhead, has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament congratulating the company on its stance on straws and stirrers.

In the motion, he has recommended that ‘Parliament congratulates Pernod Ricard on its decision to ban plastic straws and stirrers in any part of its business; understands that the business has decided to stop using non-biodegradable straws and stirrers as part of its New Year resolutions; notes that the group has asked all of its affiliates globally to ensure that non-biodegradable straws are not used at any Pernod Ricard events in the future; acknowledges that a straw, which is only used for an average of 20 minutes, can take more than 200 years to breakdown into smaller pieces and often does not disintegrate; recognises that this is an important step for the beverage industry in tackling the damaging impacts that non-biodegradable plastics are having on the global environment; commends Pernod Ricard’s decision to ban plastic straws and stirrers, and hopes that other industry-leading organisations will follow in its footsteps.’

Along with contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Pernod Ricard is committed to reducing its impact on the environment. Pernod Ricard’s 2020 Roadmap includes reducing its waste to landfills with an ambitious goal: from 913 tons today to 0 by 2020.

GLENMORANGIE’S NINTH PRIVATE EDITION INSPIRED BY AMERICAN RYE WHISKEY – Scotch Whisky News

Spios20lifestyle202_zpss8op14yc

GLENMORANGIE’S NINTH PRIVATE EDITION INSPIRED BY AMERICAN RYE WHISKEY

Glenmorangie’s first single malt whisky fully matured in American ex-rye whiskey casks is today revealed as the ninth release in the Highland Distillery’s acclaimed Private Edition series.

Glenmorangie Spìos, the Private Edition for 2018, exhibits a sophistication and subtle spice inspired by American rye whiskey. With its savoury and full-bodied character, Glenmorangie Spìos (Scots Gaelic for ‘spice’ and pronounced ‘spee-oss’) recalls the glittering heyday of American rye when production levels of rye whiskey were at an all-time high, it was hugely popular and considered highly desirable. Indeed, classic cocktails such as the Manhattan, Old Fashioned and Sazerac all used rye as their base alcohol when they were first created, over time, the spirit fell from favour and slipped into obscurity, where it would remain for years to come.

When travelling in the U.S. in the late 1990s, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks, Dr Bill Lumsden, sought out some of the few remaining rye distilleries, intrigued by the whiskey’s history.  He found its characteristics of cinnamon and clove so captivating, that he decided to experiment with American ex-rye whiskey casks. Aware that a spirit of Glenmorangie’s renowned smoothness could invite rye’s subtleties to shine through in a way that many others would not, he was determined to one day bring a hint of American rye whiskey’s character to the Distillery’s renowned spirit.

To make Glenmorangie Spìos, Dr Bill sourced the finest first-fill casks from American whiskey’s heartland of Kentucky.  And long before the rye resurgence of today began, he arranged for these hand-selected oak casks to be shipped across the world, to the Glenmorangie Distillery.

Dr Bill comments: “I have always loved American rye whiskey’s spicy character, and I believed our smooth house style would perfectly complement the nuances of ex-rye casks. The result is Glenmorangie Spìos – a full-bodied, savoury single malt which brings to mind American rye whiskey’s golden age. Its fresh, herbal nose hints at cherry, clove and scents of green grass. The rye’s spice bursts on to the palate, as toffee, clove and cinnamon mingle with buttery vanilla, before a sweet and lingering finish – a single malt whisky which is unmistakeably Glenmorangie, yet exquisitely different.”

Bottled at 46% ABV, and non-chill filtered for extra body and texture, Glenmorangie Spìos will be available from www.Clos19.com and specialist whisky shops worldwide priced at £79 from 30th January.

NOTES:

Tasting Notes:

Colour: Straw gold

Nose: Fresh, herbal and perfumed, hints of cherry, clove and mint toffee, with some green grassy notes. A splash of water releases more perfumed, ‘ethereal’ notes, crisp, clean and fresh, with myriad herbal notes.

Taste: Spicy texture, lots of toffee, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sweet, buttery vanilla.

Finish: Rich, sweet and lingering, with more fudge, toffee, brazil nut and tangy citrus.

Wolfburn Whisky: Five Years Old January 25th! – Scotch Whisky News

Wolfburn Whisky: Five Years Old January 25th!

Wolfburn Distillery is today celebrating its fifth anniversary – its first cask was filled on
25th January 2013.  Since that date the distillery has been in near constant production, and in the ensuring five years it has laid down almost 1.5 million bulk litres of spirit.

‘It continues to be an amazing adventure,’ says Shane Fraser, distillery manager. ‘For the first three years or so we only produced spirit and laid down casks. Then two years ago we installed our bottling plant and began selling whisky for the first time. The reaction has been unbelievable – our whisky is now distributed in 27 countries all around the world, it’s won multiple gold medal awards, and sales are miles higher than we anticipated. The five years since filling the first cask have simply flown past.’

Wolfburn’s Highland whisky has garnered an immediate reputation for excellence.  The distillery’s Northland expression is the only newly released single malt whisky to have won gold medals in four consecutive international competitions, and the successive Aurora and Morven expressions have attracted equally glowing reviews. Simultaneously, Wolfburn’s limited release whiskies have become the target of collectors globally, with a bottle of the inaugural release recently selling at auction in the US for over $1000.

‘At the end of the day, it’s lovely to be making a product that so many people enjoy,’ states Shane. ‘Not much in life is as good as a dram of fine single malt whisky, and I’m very, very proud of the whisky that Wolfburn is producing – it really is world class.’

ABOUT WOLFBURN:

The original Wolfburn Distillery was founded just to the west of Thurso by William Smith in 1821.  In its day it was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, producing, according to HMRC records, 28,056 “gallons of proof spirit” in a single year.  Taking its name from the stream that provided the water – the Wolf Burn – the distillery operated until around 1870.  The reasons for its closure are lost in time, but by 1877 the newly produced Ordnance Survey maps showed it being in ruins.

In 2011 plans were laid to resurrect the old distillery. Construction began in 2012 and in January 2013 the new Wolfburn Distillery commenced production, thereby becoming the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland.  Situated 300m from the site of the original distillery, the new Wolfburn operates in much the same way as the old: craftsmen use traditional methods to produce fine spirit, which is laid down in best quality oak casks to await the day when it is bottled as single malt scotch whisky.  Wolfburn’s single malt scotch whiskies are now available in 27 countries globally.

Ballot Open for Rare Karuizawa 35 Year Japanese Whisky

TOKYO — 31 January 2018 – A ballot for dekantā’s Karuizawa The Cities of Japan 35 Year Old Sherry Cask collection, showcasing bottle designs inspired by Japan’s most iconic cities with rare Japanese whisky of the silent distillery, closes Wednesday 7 February at midnight (GMT).

Authentic Japanese spirits retailer dekantā have just announced the opening of their ballot to buy one of the world’s rarest whiskies, a 35 year old single sherry cask whisky, of which only 150 bottles are available, from the closed Karuizawa distillery. Each of the Karuizawa 35 Year Old Cities of Japan Sherry Cask ($12,500, 70cl, 59.4%) bottles carries one of six limited edition designs, embodying the character of Japan’s most exciting and iconic cities, Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Yokohama and Kobe. Since the Karuizawa distillery ceased production in 2000, demand for Japanese whisky, and the limited Karuizawa stock, has increased dramatically, pushing up prices as a result.

“Karuizawa is synonymous with quality, luxury, and rarity. We’re overjoyed to offer our clients a piece of this legendary silent distillery, and to unveil the beautiful bottle designs honouring six great cities of Japan,” said Makiyo Masa, Founder and Director of dekantā. Through the collection’s six bespoke bottle designs, dekantā aims to take Japanese whisky lovers on a sensual tour of modern Japan; from the never-sleeping Tokyo, through the snowy land of Sapporo in Hokkaido, along Osaka’s edgy streets and Kobe’s stylish fashion-forward districts, on to tranquil Yokohama and vibrant Nagoya.

Winners of the ballot will be offered the opportunity to purchase a bottle of the Karuizawa 35 Year Old Cities of Japan Sherry Cask. Each entry can be for one selection, or multiple selections, from the limited edition designs. The ballot will close at 11.59 GMT on Wednesday 7 February 2018, when ballot winners will be contacted with details on how to complete their purchase. Any winners who do not exercise their opportunity to purchase their allocated bottle within three days will have their winning ballets redrawn, and new winners will be contacted.

To enter the ballot for the Karuizawa 35 Year Old Cities of Japan Sherry Cask, visit dekanta.com/ballot35 to express interest in one or more of the limited design editions, before 11.59 GMT on Wednesday 7 February 2018.

Tasting Notes

This exceptional Karuizawa has spent over three and a half decades maturing in a first fill sherry cask. Over this time, the spirit has been imbued with the flavor and character of the cask to develop a rich, dark and complex nose: opening with notes of liquorice, roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate; cinnamon, ginger and clove make an appearance after the initial intensity has waned. The sherry cask delivers a sweet and creamy palate, peppered with spice, now joined by dark chocolate, umami and succulent forest fruits. Prunes, dates and plums intensify near the finish. The finish is long and satisfying, a reminder of the significant time spent in the cask, bringing cocoa, extra spice and a touch of mango.

About Karuizawa Distillery

The Karuizawa Distillery was established in 1955 in the foothills of an active volcano Mount Asama. The location was notable for being the highest distillery in Japan at 850m above sea level. Despite being the smallest whisky producer in Japan, Karuizawa had a global reputation for producing first-class malt whiskies. The distillery imported Golden Promise barley from Scotland and aged the majority of its stock in sherry casks. Karuizawa stopped producing whisky in 2000 and has since been known as a ‘silent’ distillery. As global interest in Japanese whisky has grown in recent years, demand for stock from the closed Karuizawa distillery has increased dramatically, along with the price of the remaining bottles.

Introducing the Latest Limited Edition Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Sherry Cask Finish

Introducing the latest limited edition Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Whisky

Johnnie Walker, the world’s No. 1 Scotch Whisky Brand and the biggest selling spirits brand in travel retail has added an exciting new innovation to the Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch series: Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Sherry Cask Finish.

Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of more than a hundred ongoing experiments that deliver unique flavours and amazing serves. Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Sherry Cask Finish is the seventh release from this series and the first to launch exclusively in travel retail.

Behind these Blenders’ Batch whiskies is a small team of 12 expert whisky makers, who consistently prove that Johnnie Walker can push the boundaries of what’s possible for flavour in blended Scotch whisky.

Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Sherry Cask Finish

For over a hundred years, the iconic Johnnie Walker Black Label has been crafted with an element of sherry cask maturation. Drawing inspiration from this, and driven by the pursuit of flavour, this new Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch whisky has been matured in sherry casks, enhancing the fruity flavours to create an exceptionally rich and sweet Scotch.

Created with whiskies from distilleries such as Blair Athol, Cardhu and Strathmill, Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Sherry Cask Finish, aged 12 years, is a smooth-sipping dark whisky with notes of sweet vanilla, smoke, raisins and a warming finish of dark chocolate.

Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of bold experiments that push the boundaries in flavour. Taking inspiration from the element of sherry cask maturation in Johnnie Walker Black Label, I was intrigued by the rich and fruity element it brought to the blend. It inspired me to experiment with the sherry cask finish to awaken more of these fruity notes and to add a unique flavour dynamic. The outcome has been extraordinary; Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch Sherry Cask Finish is a sweet and rich whisky. It’s the perfect introduction for those who are new to Scotch whisky, but will also excite seasoned whisky lovers.”
