BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY

TO RELEASE A NEW BOURBON DESIGNED BY FANS

Over 100,000 Crafted their Perfect Bourbon

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (March 27, 2018) It seems when you leave it up to bourbon fans to “craft their perfect bourbon” they unanimously agree, wheat recipe is king! In November 2015, Buffalo Trace Distillery launched its “Craft Your Perfect Bourbon” website, in a lighthearted attempt to teach people about bourbon. The interactive experience allows fans to choose their bourbon recipe, warehouse placement, age, and proof.  In just over two years, 100,239 bourbon drinkers completed the process of “crafting” their perfect bourbon.

And what did fans choose?  The overwhelming number of them chose a wheated bourbon recipe aged for eight years. Most chose for their barrel to mature on the top floor of the bourbon warehouse and ultimately be bottled at somewhere between 90-99 proof. So in response, Buffalo Trace Distillery will be releasing a new edition of W. L. Weller Bourbon called “CYPB,” short for Craft Your Perfect Bourbon.

As directed by fans, this bourbon will be made from a wheat recipe, aged eight years on the top floors of the warehouses, and bottled at 95 proof. Although very limited, one batch of this new bourbon will be released each year, beginning this summer. The recommended price is $39.99 for a 750ml bottle.

“Although we certainly didn’t set out to produce a new bourbon based on this ‘Craft Your Own’ experience, the results are overwhelmingly consistent, so why not give whiskey drinkers what they want?!’” explained Kris Comstock, senior marketing director. “We’re thrilled how so many fans have interacted with the website, and we hope more will try their hand at crafting their perfect bourbon.”

BENROMACH DISTILLERY WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD AT THE WORLD WHISKIES AWARDS 2018

The Benromach Distillery Company Ltd. has been crowned the winner in the Speyside category for the Benromach 15 Years Old at the World Whiskies Awards 2018 presentation held at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London.

Benromach 15 Years Old won Best Speyside Single Malt Scotch, helping Benromach to add to its growing awards collection. The accolade comes just as the distillery celebrates its 20th anniversary year, marking 20 years since it was extensively refurbished and reopened again in 1998.

Benromach 15 Years Old captures the classic character of Benromach Speyside single malt Scotch whisky – beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke. This touch of smoke was almost lost forever from the region before the distillery reopened.

The World Whiskies Awards are held annually and aim to showcase the very best whiskies in each global category. The Benromach winning expression fought off fierce competition throughout several stages by world-renowned, expert judges and tasters.

Benromach Distillery Manager, Keith Cruickshank, said: “We are so pleased to have been awarded this prestigious accolade at the World Whiskies Awards for our Benromach 15 Years Old. We are proud of our core range of hand crafted single malts, which provide whisky lovers from across the globe a chance to discover a lost taste of Speyside.

“The award also comes at an important time in our history, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of production at the distillery since it was reopened in 1998. We look forward to producing many more award-winning whiskies in the years to come.”

With a distinctive golden amber colour thanks to its long maturation in sherry and bourbon casks, the award-winning Benromach 15 Years Old is beautifully balanced. Sherry aromas lead on the nose followed by vanilla and spicy ginger, complemented by delicate chamomile and menthol notes.

The Benromach 10 Years Old was also recently honoured Gold in the Speyside 12 Years and Under category at the World Whiskies Awards.

Benromach Distillery

Originally built in 1898, Benromach Distillery was brought back to life when the Urquhart family realised a lifelong dream to own a distillery and purchased it in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five-year period before it was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998.

In reopening Benromach Distillery, the Urquhart family decided to create a classic Speyside single malt – a style that draws its influence from Speyside whiskies pre-1960s.

Benromach Distillery is located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres. A four-star visitor centre is open to the public throughout the year for tours and tastings. Benromach Distillery is a member of the world-famous Malt Whisky Trail.

KINGSBARNS DISTILLERY’S SPIRIT REACHES 3rd BIRTHDAY – Scotch Whisky News

Peter Holroyd and Kingsbarns 3 year old spirit

KINGSBARNS DISTILLERY’S SPIRIT REACHES 3rd BIRTHDAY

Kingsbarns Distillery is delighted to reveal that the first casks it filled on March 23rd 2015 came of age on Saturday and can now  be called Scotch Whisky.

The Wemyss family’s fledgling Fife distillery visitor centre was opened to the public on St Andrews Day 2014, with spirit distillation beginning in January 2015.  After a few months perfecting the spirit style, the distillery manager, Peter Holroyd,  proudly filled the first casks  on March 23rd 2015.

Initially, all the casks selected were first fill ex Bourbon barrels from Heaven Hill Distillery in Kentucky.  The very first cask filled is on display for visitors to see  in the oldest part of the farm steading visitor centre called the doocot.  Scotch whisky has to be matured in oak barrels for a minimum of 3 years and a day in a bonded warehouse in Scotland, so sadly unlike all the other casks of maturing spirit, this first cask will never be able to be called Kingsbarns Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

However, to give a preview of what is to come, Peter  Holroyd took the chance to take a sample from this first cask to celebrate its 3rd birthday: “I was very proud to fill this first cask from the spirit I distilled three years ago and am delighted to see the impact that it has had on the colour. On the nose I get custard and apricot Danish pastry, but you still get the Kingsbarns light fruity character. On the palate, there is a wonderful balance of spirit and wood and you can really taste the Kingsbarns signature style.”

William Wemyss on behalf of the family owners stated: “This is a very exciting time for us at Kingsbarns Distillery uniting the excellent quality barley from local Fife farms, the attention to detail in distilling and the great effort dedicated to acquiring the finest casks for maturing our precious spirit.  Now that we have reached the minimum legal age, we can move forwards to sample whisky from our early casks and make some choices regarding the first bottling of our new Lowland malt.”

The first release of Kingsbarns Single Malt Scotch Whisky will be exclusively available to Kingsbarns Founders’ Club members and expected in summer 2018.  Membership is still available either at the Visitor Centre or on https://www.kingsbarnsdistillery.com .

INTRODUCING THE MACALLAN 50 YEARS OLD: A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY IN THE MODERN ERA – Scotch Whisky News

INTRODUCING THE MACALLAN 50 YEARS OLD:

A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY IN THE MODERN ERA

March 27th, 2018 (New York, New York) The Macallan, the world’s most admired single malt Scotch whisky, unveils a new and remarkably rare limited edition single malt whisky – The Macallan 50 Years Old – 2018 release. A peerless single malt that has slowly matured over five extraordinary decades, The Macallan 50 Years Old reflects The Macallan’s journey of discovery in the modern era. It is a whisky defined by years of dedication and craftsmanship which reveals the unrivalled commitment to the mastery of wood and spirit for which The Macallan has been known since it was established in 1824.

The Macallan 50 Years Old was created at a time when the distillery had the future in mind. By increasing the number of curiously small stills that help to concentrate the ‘new make’ spirit, the foundations were established all those years ago to ensure the full-bodied, rich and fruity flavors that are characteristic of The Macallan today. Acquiring a robust elegance from these curiously small stills, the spirit was then laid down in a single European oak Sherry butt from Spain and left to mature slowly and quietly for fifty long years. During these decades of slumber, the ancient wood shaped the spirit – delivering the greatest contribution to the character, natural color, distinctive aromas and full flavors at the heart of this single malt.

The Macallan 50 Years Old is testament to the exceptional oak casks, which have been sourced, crafted, toasted and seasoned under the watchful eyes of The Macallan’s masters of wood and delivered through the years to the exacting specifications of generations of master distillers.

A rich and complex whisky presenting sweet oak vanilla and blackcurrant characters with a beautiful, vibrant amber natural color. Wood vanillas open on the nose with a hint of spice before ripe blackcurrants and an earthy tone combine, with a background of subtle peat. The palate leads with flavors of sweet oak vanilla, fudge and toffee, soon making way for black peppercorns to provide a gentle warming, with deep sweetness joining from orange peels and figs. The finish is an incredibly viscous mouth coating, which is long and slightly dry from the subtle peat notes.

Nick Savage, Master Distiller at The Macallan, said: “After being left to mature for half a century, this wonderfully rare single malt is full of rich flavor and beautiful natural color. Coveted by whisky connoisseurs and collectors around the world, The Macallan 50 Years Old is an incredible addition to our expanding range of unique, mature whiskies and marks another pinnacle of The Macallan whisky makers’ art. With a finite volume of only 200 individually numbered bottles worldwide, this highly limited 2018 release will likely be in very high demand.”

Bottled at an ABV of 44% The Macallan 50 Years Old is presented in a solid oak box featuring an etched face inlaid with a matte gold badged age statement. The bottle label is reminiscent of the 50 and 25 Years Old bottling’s of yesteryear. This 2018 release will be available starting in April 2018 and is limited to 200 bottles worldwide, with only 35 bottles allocated to the USA, at a suggested retail price of approximately $35,000.

About The Macallan

Founded in 1824 in the heart of Speyside, The Macallan was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then it has built a reputation as one of the world’s finest single malt whiskies.  The story of The Macallan is built on the Six Pillars, each influencing the whisky in its own distinct way.  From the spiritual home of Easter Elchies House; curiously small stills giving richness to the pure spirit; finest cut of the distillation, to exceptional oak casks which account for up to 80% of the final flavor in the whisky; natural color and finally peerless spirit, The Macallan itself.

Wood sits at the heart of The Macallan. The vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland, together with true mastery, set it apart from the rest. For more information on The Macallan, visit us.themacallan.com. The Macallan can also be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

New Landmark— ‘The Barrel’—Opens in Louisville’s Bourbon District Visitor destination and design firm Solid Light creates iconic art structure – American Whiskey News

New Landmark— ‘The Barrel’—Opens in Louisville’s Bourbon District Visitor destination and design firm Solid Light creates iconic art structure

Louisville, KY — March 23, 2018 — At the center of Louisville’s Bourbon District is ‘The Barrel’—a new art piece that serves as a gathering space and celebration of the city’s bourbon renaissance and roots in the Commonwealth’s storied bourbon history. Unveiled today, the iconic structure, designed and built by Louisville-based Solid Light, a full-service firm that plans, designs and builds exhibits and visitor destinations, is an entirely new visitor experience located at the intersection of Fourth and Main Streets—the heart of the Bourbon District.

‘The Barrel’—a creative interpretation of a whiskey barrel that tops just over 11 feet in height—allows visitors to walk through the ADA-compliant structure and take photos of this new landmark and iconic Kentucky image. It represents the second phase of Louisville’s Bourbon District and Solid Light’s collaboration with the Louisville Downtown Partnership (LDP) to develop the area.

“We are passionate about all of our projects but designing and building a piece of art in our hometown is especially meaningful for us,” said Solid Light Owner/President Cynthia Torp. “We’ve brought to life an iconic image associated with Kentucky and Louisville—a whiskey barrel—by designing a structure that is not only a must-stop photo opportunity that visitors can walk through, but through our specific design elements, will also give visitors a greater sense of what makes a bourbon barrel unique. It’s a distinctive feature and hallmark of the Louisville bourbon experience.”

The Barrel 7 (photo credit to Solid Light)

The piece has five hoops that grow in height and width, mimicking the design of a whiskey barrel. The two smallest hoops are 9’3” in height, 11’3” in width, progressing to two larger hoops that are 10’3” high and 13’4” wide, with the middle hoop reaching 11’3” in height and 15’5” in width.

The materials used to create the enormous structure reflect those of an actual oak barrel.  The hoops are made to look like the end-grain of oak which is commonly used in barrel-making. The visible texture was hand-carved into slabs of clay and those reliefs were then cast in multiple to create a positive image. Finally, the positive reliefs were cast into concrete to form each cross-section of a barrel stave. The outside is lined with corten steel, reflecting the metal hoops used on a bourbon barrel.  The insides of the hoops are lined with a black powder coated steel, imitating the char found in barrels after they are fired, an essential step in the bourbon-making process.

“Every element of this structure was created with great attention to detail and purpose so that visitors are immersed in the remarkable design of a bourbon barrel, down to the char found in the barrels,” said Mike McCarthy, Chief Operating Officer at Solid Light. “As they walk through the structure, visitors will have a fun and engaging experience that will give them an appreciation for this iconic image.”

The Barrel 8 (photo credit to Solid Light)

At the entrance of ‘The Barrel’ is an interpretive sign also designed by Solid Light that provides an overview of the bourbon industry in Downtown Louisville.  The sign includes a map showing all the bourbon historical sites and attractions in the district.

Featuring historic signs, destination signs, banners and a pop-up event scape, the Bourbon District is a collaborative effort led by LDP, Louisville Metro Government, the Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau (LCVB), and the Louisville Water Company, in cooperation with Downtown’s bourbon community. The first phase of the Bourbon District, completed in April 2017, featured historic site signs and destination signs designed by Solid Light. The area has four distillery experiences—including the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience developed by Solid Light—and three more scheduled to open this year.

“The Bourbon District honors Louisville’s cultural heritage while looking to the future of Bourbonism® in the city.  We are excited to share this experience with visitors and found an important partner in Solid Light,” said Rebecca Matheny, Executive Director of the Louisville Downtown Partnership. “Solid Light shares our passion for this project and it’s evident in the approach, design and development of ‘The Barrel’ and Bourbon District.”

TWO KENTUCKY ICONS LINK UP TO CREATE THE JIM BEAM® NATURAL WATER SANCTUARY ALLIANCE AT BERNHEIM ARBORETUM & RESEARCH FOREST – American Whiskey News

TWO KENTUCKY ICONS LINK UP TO CREATE THE JIM BEAM® NATURAL WATER SANCTUARY ALLIANCE AT BERNHEIM ARBORETUM & RESEARCH FOREST

Alliance aims to protect natural water, restore wildlife habitats and reintroduce native plants and trees

Clermont, Kentucky – March 22, 2018 – Two Kentucky icons are embarking on an alliance to preserve and protect the pristine limestone water in the Clermont area.

Jim Beam, the world’s No. 1 selling bourbon whiskey, and Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest, a 15,625 acre privately held forest just south of Louisville, have joined forces to develop a natural water sanctuary on Bernheim grounds immediately adjacent to the Jim Beam distillery.

Beginning as a one-year agreement, the Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance will protect water quality, restore wildlife habitats, and reintroduce native plants and trees. This group is also working toward a long-term agreement to enhance environmental education, improve watershed protection planning, and secure quality water.

“Great bourbon starts with great water,” said Freddie Noe, eighth generation Beam Distiller. “In fact, the water in Clermont is one of the main reasons my family chose to settle here back in 1795. Jim Beam bourbon gets its distinct and wonderful taste, in part, from the local water, which is filtered naturally through limestone. We’re proud to team up with our neighbors at Bernheim to preserve this vital natural resource.”

The Jim Beam Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest will concentrate on conservation activities across Bernheim, particularly within the Long-Lick and Wilson Creek watersheds. These areas feature large forest expanses, wetlands and the head waters of three creeks and several small lakes that support wildlife, the surrounding communities, and the production of Jim Beam Bourbon.

Through this alliance, Jim Beam will also support Bernheim’s work to protect the federally endangered Indiana Bat, and co-host an annual landowners’ workshop to educate the community and promote best practices in water conservation and forest stewardship.

“The importance of clean water cannot be overstated. It’s essential for wildlife. It’s essential for human life and it’s essential to our economy,” said Mark Wourms, Bernheim’s Executive Director. “We are grateful to have a corporate partner like Jim Beam that values protecting this vital natural resource.”

The Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance is the latest example of Beam Suntory’s dedication to protecting water and the environment, inspired by corporate parent Suntory Holdings, which has established 20 Natural Water Sanctuaries throughout Japan. These more than 20,000 acres of forest protect quality water to supply its facilities, and nurture surrounding communities for many years to come.

“Both the Beam and Bernheim families have deep Kentucky roots and centuries of heritage in the Clermont area,” added Noe. “We have long shared a common respect and love for the land here and we understand the critical role protecting our environment, especially our natural water, plays in our future – not only the future of our business but the future health and well-being of our families, friends and colleagues who call this area home. We feel privileged to be able to give back to the community that has given us so much.”

Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky scoops prize at the World Whiskies Awards

Old Pulteney 25 Years Old has picked up a Gold accolade in the Scotch Highlands ‘21 & Over’ category at the prestigious World Whiskies Awards 2018.

The Single Malt Scotch Whisky, released in October 2017, fought off stiff competition from other Scotch Highland whiskies to take the Gold honour at the awards.

The World Whiskies Awards, now in its 11th year, is a global celebration of the very best in all internationally recognised styles, awarding and promoting the world’s best whiskies to consumers and the trade across the globe. This year, the competition received entries from over 20 countries, which were judged by over 50 international judges.

Glimmering bronze in colour, Old Pulteney 25 Years Old contains mature and fragrant flavour notes. The expression opens with heavy spices and dark chocolate which effortlessly lead to rum-soaked raisins and lime honey, punctuated with clean notes of orange peel and baked apples.

The flavour is firmly anchored in bitter chocolate and creamy vanilla with hints of toffee sweetness and crisp overtones of fresh lemon and coconut. The finish is long and spicy with a notes of dried fruit cake and exotic wood, each dram reflecting its expert craftsmanship with a rich and satisfying taste.

Aged at its own steady pace and sheltered from a fast-changing world, the elegant whisky began its journey in ex-bourbon American oak barrels for 22 years before adopting its spicy sweetness, depth and colour from ex-oloroso Spanish oak butts before reaching its premium age of 25. All throughout, this expression is matured in the invigorating sea air of Wick.

Malcolm Waring, Distillery Manager for Old Pulteney, says:

“This is a fantastic accolade for Old Pulteney 25 Years Old. We’re thrilled the expression has won a Gold award having only been released late last year. We’ve worked incredibly hard to create another expression in the Old Pulteney core collection that lives up to the expectations of the others and it’s with great pride that we can announce this whisky is another award winner in our growing portfolio.”

About Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Old Pulteney is one of the world’s finest and most distinctive single malt Scotch whiskies. Known as the ‘Maritime Malt’, it is crafted in the windswept coastal town of Wick, home to the Pulteney Distillery which is one of the most northerly on the Scottish mainland. The distillery was established in 1826 in the heart of ‘Pulteneytown’, the town created to house fishermen during Wick’s famous herring boom which drew a fleet of over 1000 boats and 7000 workers to this remote and rugged harbour.

Old Pulteney is the embodiment of this place, its people and its remarkable history. The skilled Pulteney Distillery team continues to craft whisky using the most traditional and time-honoured techniques that most others have long abandoned. This includes the uniquely shaped Pulteney stills, which are reflected in the design of the Old Pulteney bottle on shelves today.

Matured in hand-selected oak casks, the resulting whisky has been acclaimed for its excellence, its smooth drinking style and faint hint of the sea. Old Pulteney holds the coveted title of ‘World Whisky of the Year’ for 2012 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible – one of the industry’s highest accolades – and most recently the ‘World’s Best Single Malt Whisky’ of 2016 by the prestigious World Whiskies Awards. The whisky also achieved top ten status in the UK single malt market in 2012 and is flourishing in many other countries around the world.

JIM BEAM CELEBRATES INDUSTRY FIRST WITH 15 MILLIONTH BARREL

Clermont, Kentucky – March 12, 2018 – Jim Beam® Bourbon, the world’s No. 1 bourbon, continues to outpace the industry, filling its 15 millionth barrel of bourbon since the end of Prohibition. The milestone barrel — a first for Kentucky distilleries — was personally filled and sealed by Seventh Generation Master Distiller Fred Noe and his son Freddie Noe, Eighth Generation Beam Distiller, at the brand’s flagship distillery in Clermont, Ky.

“Fifteen million is a big number, but we’re a big bourbon,” said Fred Noe. “When Jim Beam, my great grandfather, filled his first barrel of whiskey at our Clermont distillery after Prohibition, I doubt he would have predicted that one day we would be a brand known and enjoyed the world over.”

The historic milestone, achieved less than two years after the filling of Jim Beam’s 14 millionth barrel — the shortest period of time between milestone barrel fills — serves as a testament to the continued global bourbon boom. The growing momentum can be attributed to continued strong sales spurred by rising global demand and the excellent performance of the entire Jim Beam portfolio across the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia.

“We’re reaching these milestones faster and faster,” said Craig Christenson, vice president global marketing, Jim Beam. “From Russia and Germany to Japan and China – not to mention the United States where Jim Beam is gaining substantial market share, bourbon has become the spirit of choice around the world and we’re happy to oblige them by making more. We’re the first to reach 15 million and we’re not slowing down.”

The 15 millionth barrel, signed by employees at the company’s Clermont, Boston and Frankfort plants, will join the nearly 2.3 million barrels of bourbon currently aging in Jim Beam’s rackhouses across the Commonwealth. It will be stored inside the distillery’s historic rackhouse D, a nine-story warehouse rebuilt by Jim Beam after Prohibition on the Clermont distillery grounds. The rackhouse is open to visitors as part of the Jim Beam® American Stillhouse tour.

Consumer Demand Fuels Category Growth

According to the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, bourbon is now an $8.5 billion state industry, supporting more than 17,500 jobs and generating more than $1.8 million in tax revenues annually.

At one time known for one primary product, the iconic Jim Beam portfolio now offers a wide range of award-winning expressions including Jim Beam Black®, Jim Beam® Distillers Cut, Jim Beam® Double Oak, Jim Beam® Devil’s Cut®, Jim Beam® Single Barrel, Jim Beam® Bonded, Jim Beam® Rye and Jim Beam® Distiller’s Masterpiece.

Jim Beam has continued to expand its operations in Kentucky, fueled by a commitment to innovate and meet surging global consumer demand.
