Glengoyne Distillery launches Teapot Dram Batch No. 006 – Scotch Whisky News

Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch No. 006

Glengoyne Distillery launches Teapot Dram Batch No. 006

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky has announced the release of the much-anticipated Teapot Dram Batch No. 006.

The sixth release in the coveted Teapot Dram series, Batch No. 006 is matured in first fill Oloroso sherry oak casks and has a natural, rich amber hue and notes of cinnamon, marzipan and cloves. Bottled un-chillfiltered at cask strength, 2772 bottles of Teapot Dram Batch No. 006 are available to purchase exclusively from the Glengoyne Distillery shop and online at www.glengoyne.com.

The Teapot Dram series has been created in tribute to an old Glengoyne Distillery tradition: until the 1970s, workers would be given three fingers of whisky, three times each day. Most distilleries gave their teams new make spirit, but not Glengoyne. At Glengoyne, the finest whisky from first fill Oloroso sherry casks was chosen for the distillery workers’ drams. The less seasoned stillmen would, to save face, discreetly pour some of their untouched drams into a copper teapot which sat on the canteen windowsill, ready for their older colleagues.

Teapot Dram Batch No. 006 was launched last night at Glengoyne Distillery by Duncan McNicoll and Billy Edmiston, two of Glengoyne Distillery’s original ‘teapot drammers’.

Katy Macanna, Brand Manager for Glengoyne, said: “The Teapot Dram is a firm favourite amongst Glengoyne fans, and we’re delighted to share the latest release in the series.

“We’re incredibly proud of our history here at Glengoyne, and that’s why we continue to craft our whisky in the same unhurried way as we have done for more than 185 years. Our team is a vital part of that history, and the Teapot Dram series helps to tell the story of one of our old and most treasured distillery traditions.”

Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch No. 006 is bottled at 59.3% ABV. Exclusively available as a limited-edition release from Glengoyne Distillery and online at www.glengoyne.com, and retails at £90 per 70cl bottle.

Nestled into Dumgoyne Hill with the hills of Loch Lomond in the distance, Glengoyne is considered one of Scotland’s most beautiful distilleries. Just 14 miles north of Glasgow, Glengoyne sits on the border between the Highland and Lowland whisky regions.  Glengoyne Distillery is owned by one of Scotland’s leading independent, family-owned distillers, Ian Macleod Distillers.

WATERFORD DISTILLERY APPOINTS TERROIR AGRONOMIST – Irish Whiskey News

Grace O’Reilly - Waterford Distillery 1

WATERFORD DISTILLERY APPOINTS TERROIR AGRONOMIST

Irish single malt whisky producer, Waterford Distillery, is delighted to announce that Grace O’Reilly will be joining the team as the company’s agronomist in charge of terroir.

Grace will be overseeing the distillery’s relationship with its barley growers, and deepening the company’s understanding of the barley grown across their multiple Irish terroirs.

Terroir is the French word used primarily in the wine trade to describe the interaction between soil, microclimate and place.

Grace will help unearth knowledge on how these variables influence the different flavours found in the terroir-derived distillates produced at Waterford Distillery.

Grace’s career started with the Minch Malt, part of maltsters Boortmalt, and was from day one closely involved with the distillery’s initial intricate barley logistics.

Latterly Grace was with agricultural specialists Glanbia, before joining Waterford Distillery directly. She has continued to advise malting barley growers over the past four harvests across Ireland’s tillage-growing regions.

Having witnessed first-hand the successes and challenges of localized barley production across Ireland, Grace has a profound understanding of the variance from field to field in a given growing season.

Waterford Distillery CEO Mark Reynier says: “Terroir, provenance and traceability may be trendy buzzwords frequently bandied about by marketing men, but to us they actually mean something.

“Heretical as it may seem, we can show that a whisky’s flavour can indeed be influenced by where its barley is grown.

“While large distillers understandably are reluctant to accept this inconvenience, we find it both compelling and intriguing. Grace’s appointment is a kind of ‘putting money where our mouth is’ thing.”

Grace O’Reilly added: “From the beginning I really enjoyed collaborating with the team at Waterford Distillery and I’m thrilled to be joining at this exciting stage.

“Waterford Distillery are leaders in a what I hope becomes a barley movement. The level of research and data that has been collected on the 71 farms so-far involved is astonishing, and proves how serious we are about terroir.”

“Growers are the gatekeepers of terroir and through the spirit we can see how all these factors can influence flavour.”

It is highly unusual for a whisky distillery to require its own in-house agronomist, but is indicative of the importance attributable to the extensive barley provisioning policy and the consequent understanding of terroir.

Given Waterford Distillery’s obsession with barley – the essential variable that makes single malt whisky the most complex spirit in the world – the team believes this appointment will further enhance the company’s pioneering exploration in to whisky terroir.

DISTILLERY HIGHLIGHTS

71 Irish barley growers across multiple terroirs – each with demonstrable traceability from field to barrel

NOTES

Waterford Distillery is a major whisky project by the man behind the renaissance of Islay’s Bruichladdich single malt whisky.

We’re embarking on a long journey, a voyage as ambitious as it’s pioneering. The destination is to create not just the most compelling Irish whisky, but the world’s most profound single malt.

WATERFORD

We chose Waterford, for here on the banks of the river Suir, on Ireland’s sunny south-eastern coast, we have an exceptional state-of-the-art facility originally built by Diageo in 2004 and converted to distilling in 2015. And we have the finest quality raw materials: the purest of spring water from renowned ancient wells; a team of passionate distillers that share the vision; and the very best barley in the world.

BARLEY

The provenance of our barley, where and how it is cultivated, is therefore key. Taking proven principles from Islay a giant step further, we have sourced an unprecedented 71 Irish farms, some organically-run, growing barley on 19 distinct soil types. With a pioneering digital logistical system keeping track, each farmer’s crop is harvested, stored, malted and distilled separately. Thus we can capture in spirit each farm’s terroir, that subtle character shaped by micro-climate and soil. Individuality and integrity from field to barrel.

PROVENANCE

The goal of this precision, provenance with total traceability, is to provide us with an unparalleled library of maturing, nascent single malt whisky as each farm’s barley is distilled, one per week throughout the year.

WHISKY

The first whisky ran in January 2016. After maturing for several years in the best of French and American oak, we believe these component “single”, single malts, each one exhibiting its own nuances, will come together making the most profound single malt whisky ever created.

THE TERROIR PROJECT

The Waterford team is currently working with industry-leading researcher Dr Dustin Herb from Oregon State University, as well as the Irish agricultural body Teagasc, to demonstrate the influence of terroir on flavours found in barley distillates – another world-first for the industry. The results of this will be published towards the end of 2019.

BONHAMS SMASHES YET ANOTHER WHISKY RECORD

American Hogshead Cask from Macallan Distillery, 1996- 22 year old sold for HK$3,430,000 (US$437,861 / £342,271

Hong Kong – Bonhams once again set a world whisky record at its Rare and Fine Wine and Whisky auction on Friday 16 November in Hong Kong with the sale of an American Hogshead Cask from Macallan Distillery, 1996-22 year old, which sold for HK$3,430,000 (US$437,861 / £342,271) to an absentee bidder against active bidding in the room, surpassing the original estimate of HK$2,200,000 to HK$2,800,000.

The new benchmark was set against the previous sale of a Sherry Hogshead Cask from Macallan Distillery, 1987-30 year old which sold for HK$2,928,000 (US$373,800 / £292,200) at auction in October 2017.

“Not only has this 22 year-old cask reached the highest record price realised at auction, but it is also the most valuable per bottle cask sold in auction worldwide and is expected to produce 310 bottles valued at HK$11,064 per bottle,” explains Daniel Lam, Director of Wine & Whisky, Asia.

During 2018, Bonhams has broken the world record for the most valuable bottle of whisky sold at auction on three separate occasions, and set a new world record for the most expensive bottle of Japanese whisky ever sold at auction.

The Hong Kong sale, Bonhams largest to date with more than 1,100 lots, concluded with a robust total
of HK$41, 219,168 (US$5,263,862/ £4,099,553) with 77% sold by lot and 87% sold by value.

Alongside the leading lot, impressive prices were also achieved throughout the whisky category of the auction including:

  • A bottle of Karuizawa-1960-52 year old-#5627 the oldest expression, which was sampled and kept by Mr. Osami Uchibori, the former malt master of Karuizawa Distillery which sold for HK$1,837,500 (US$234,568 / £ 183,359) against an estimate of HK$1,000,000 – 1,400,000
  • A bottle Laphroaig-1970-14 year-#4367 from one of the most legendary Italian independent bottlers Samaroli sold for HK$ 490,000 (US$62,551 / £48,895), against an estimate of HK$20,000 – 26,000

Within the wine category, the single owner collection from an esteemed Hong Kong collector presented across some 500 lots of fine wine purchased between 1980s and 2003 was well received amongst bidders. Immaculately preserved and aged in Hong Kong over the past 15 years, this was a truly “Made in Hong Kong” collection, featuring mature Bordeaux, multiple vintages of Penfolds Grange, Hill of Grace and other matured Australian wine, and Cult California wines from the 1990s.

Highlights in this sale include:

  • Château Mouton Rothschild 2000 (1 jeroboam – 5 liters); bottle number 5 of 5000 and autographed by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and sold for HK$171,500 (US$21,893 / £17,113)

THE MACALLAN LAUNCHES ITS FIRST GLOBAL BRAND ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN – Scotch Whisky News

 The Macallan1

THE MACALLAN LAUNCHES ITS FIRST GLOBAL BRAND ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

The Macallan2

Monday November 19, 2018 (NEW YORK, NY) – The Macallan, the world’s most precious single malt, is launching its first ever global advertising campaign across television, cinema and digital channels. In the USA, the campaign will roll out nationally across digital and social. The focus of the campaign, a 90-second hero film titled “Make The Call”, will launch today, Monday November 19, 2018.

Focusing on key markets including the USA, Mexico, Taiwan, China and the UK, “Make The Call” offers encouragement to a new generation of consumers who are faced with increasingly complex and often daunting life decisions. Concepted by leading global creative agency, J. Walter Thompson, the new long-term integrated brand campaign features a fantastical visual metaphor to bring the brand’s messaging to life.

Paul Condron, Global Brand Controller, The Macallan, said: “The launch of our first ever global advertising campaign marks a new chapter in the long and illustrious history of The Macallan. The ‘Make The Call’ campaign has been developed with the highest level of quality and craft that is truly fitting for the brand and it will be launching in key markets around the world. “2018 has already been a momentous year for The Macallan, having opened our world class new Distillery and Visitor Experience in June. We look forward to building on that and to seeing the reaction of audiences around the world to this fantastical tribute to people who make the call to choose a bigger life.”

Creative Director for creative agency J. Walter Thompson, Paul Rizzello, said, “The pressure of a big decision often makes us hesitate just when success is within reach. We’re so afraid of getting it wrong, we end up avoiding those decisions altogether. This story is about someone who decides to go for it. He makes the call.”

Executive Creative Director, J. Walter Thompson, Lucas Peon said, “One of the most refreshing things about this campaign is that it avoids category clichés so often seen in whisky advertising around the world. To get the attention of people who wouldn’t necessarily drink single malt, you have to be ready to do something more provocative yet authentic.”

The “Make The Call” film was directed by Juriaan Booij out of RSA Films and shot by John Mathieson, the twice Oscar-nominated Cinematographer behind Gladiator and X-Men. The production has pioneered new techniques from the first use of motion capture in a wind tunnel, to 3D matte paintings created using VR headsets. Creative and strategic work was led by J. Walter Thompson London, with support from network offices including Moscow and Shanghai, and sister agency Hudson Rouge in New York.

Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the world’s’ most admired and awarded single malt whiskies. The reputation of The Macallan is based on a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character. An obsession with excellence has been the hallmark of The Macallan since its founding, by Alexander Reid, on a plateau above the river Spey in northeast Scotland.

In May 2018, The Macallan unveiled its new $186 million distillery and visitor experience on its Speyside estate, increasing investment in whisky, warehousing and in The Macallan’s signature sherry-seasoned oak casks.  The striking contemporary architecture, cut into the slope of the land, takes its cues from ancient Scottish hills.  It stands nearby Easter Elchies House, the Highland Manor built in 1700 which has been The Macallan’s spiritual home since 1824.  The new distillery marks an important milestone, recognising the significant journey of The Macallan since 1824 and marking an exciting new chapter in the evolution of the luxury single malt.

Bowmore® 1965 has matured for 52 years at Bowmore distillery, the home of the world’s oldest Scotch maturation warehouses, the No. 1 Vaults. This extended maturation period has created a rare and refined whisky with the perfect blend of complexity and elegance, exemplifying Bowmore’s history spent perfecting the art of whisky maturation. Only 232 bottles of the rare Bowmore 1965 have been produced for the world and will be available as of this December with a suggested retail price of $30,000 (750ml).

Bowmore 1965 is the latest expression in the Vaults Series, a collection of the rarest whiskies from the home of the No. 1 Vaults. The liquid was one of the first to pass through Bowmore’s then-new steam heated stills in 1965, benefitting from smoother heating and greater control, enabling the distillery to craft a spirit that was perfectly primed to mature over many decades. The expression is a rich reward for those who value the importance of savoring time, with plenty of time spent carefully perfecting every single element of the whisky making process when creating the release.

“Bowmore 1965 demonstrates the rewards of our meticulous aging process and showcases the quality of whiskies coming from our passionate and dedicated distillery team,” says David Turner, Bowmore Distillery Manager. “The 1965 expression comes from a golden era of distillation and adds another fine single malt to the Bowmore portfolio. The latest addition in our 50 year old Vaults series is sure to obtain legendary status among collectors and whisky enthusiasts.”

Bowmore 1965 is the fourth expression to debut from the Bowmore 50 Year Old VAULTS SERIES, a collection honoring the rare single malts that were first distilled and began aging in the No. 1 Vaults during the 1960s, an era known for producing some of Bowmore’s most collectible bottlings. Bowmore 1965 joins: 1966 50 Year Old (released November 2017); Black Bowmore 1964 50 Year Old (released June 2017); and Bowmore 1961 50 Year Old (released December 2016).

THE 1965 BOWMORE BOTTLE AND WOOD CASE

Sitting at the pinnacle of Bowmore’s portfolio, Bowmore 1965 is presented in a hand-blown glass bottle boasting sterling silver adornments and is housed in a hand-crafted cabinet made from Scottish oak.

ABOUT BOWMORE
Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky.  The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands.  Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore® is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills honed over two centuries to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Time is savoured at Bowmore and the distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its Single Malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore® Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Through peerless maturation expertise and sense of timing, Bowmore® is “Time, Savoured” – a rich reward for those that appreciate the value of time and an exquisite whisky coveted the world over.

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Multi-Million-Dollar Investment
in Expansion of Bardstown Visitor Center, Production Facilities

HHD-VC Building Exterior

BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Heaven Hill Distillery announced today plans for a renovation, expansion and rebrand of the current Bourbon Heritage Center—Heaven Hill’s visitor experience in Bardstown, Ky. since 2004. The new visitor center renovation and expansion, part of a multi-year $65 million investment plan to expand production capacity in Bardstown, cements Heaven Hill’s commitment to Kentucky’s signature industry through growth and expansion in many areas—from distillation and warehousing, to manufacturing and tourism. Expansion details were announced in partnership with Solid Light, Abel Construction and Kentucky Tourism officials.

With an investment of $17.5 million and an enlarged footprint, the new visitor center in Bardstown will focus on the story of Heaven Hill Distillery since its inception in 1935, the Shapira Family, and iconic brands within the portfolio. Visitors will experience a multi-sensory showcase of the stories behind the evolution of Kentucky Bourbon, rooted in key periods in America’s history. From influential names like Elijah Craig and John E. Fitzgerald, to the barrel rollers and distillery workers, the history will be brought to life through one-of-a-kind exhibits and tours.

Unique to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the visitor center will offer a multitude of signature experiences:

  • The Heaven Hill Distillery American Whiskey portfolio will be on full display through the widest variety of whiskey tastings and educational seminars on the market.
  • Interactive, educational spaces dedicated to Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, two brands with unique histories that played an integral role shaping Kentucky Bourbon.
  • A “You Do Bourbon” immersive space, where guests will be able to participate in hands-on laboratory learning experiences and bottle their own Bourbon.
  • A new rooftop bar will feature cocktails and Bourbon tastings, which visitors can enjoy overlooking Heaven Hill rickhouses.
  • An enhanced retail space will offer branded merchandise, specialty food products, locally-crafted gifts, and several of Heaven Hill’s premium Bourbons and American Whiskeys.

“At Heaven Hill Distillery we are committed to the growth of Kentucky Bourbon and invite fans to experience, taste and learn from storied brands across our award-winning portfolio,” said Heaven Hill President Max Shapira. “By honoring historic figures and recognizing the people who are the fabric of this industry, nurturing the dream held by my father and his brothers more than 80 years ago, and educating consumers to enjoy Bourbon into the next generation, Heaven Hill is able to bring history to life in an exciting, modern way relevant to today’s consumer.”

In addition to the visitor center expansion, Heaven Hill will also be adding production capacity with new barrel warehousing, bottling line and equipment upgrades, and increased holdings of aging Bourbon Whiskey, amounting to a total of $47.5 million. Since 2010, Heaven Hill has invested over $100 million into the future of Kentucky Bourbon primarily through distillery expansion, warehouse construction, and tourism.

This newest visitor center expansion will play a vital role in expanding tourism, not only in Bardstown, but across the Kentucky Bourbon Trail through Heaven Hill’s two historically driven stops. When it opened in 2004, the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center was one of the first visitor centers on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and has played an instrumental role in establishing Kentucky as a top tourist destination. The Bourbon Heritage Center is a multiple past winner of Whisky Magazine’s “Visitor Attraction of the Year” award at the magazine’s annual “Icons of Whisky” Awards and is consistently ranked as one of the top tours in the Bardstown area, drawing 60,000 visitors per year. In Louisville, the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience is dedicated to the story of Kentucky’s First Distiller and the world’s 2nd largest Bourbon brand, Evan Williams. Hosting 100,000 visitors annually, it was the first distillery back on Whiskey Row in Downtown Louisville.

“Our shared commitment to excellence and passion for our home state of Kentucky and Bourbon make working with the Shapira family on the Heaven Hill Distillery Visitor Center an incredible opportunity to convey the history and craft of Bourbon with visitors,” said Solid Light Owner/President Cynthia Torp. “When it opens, guests will have a truly comprehensive and immersive experience that tells the Heaven Hill story, the stories of Elijah Craig and Larceny, and immerses them both in the history of the not only Kentucky bourbon, but the larger history of Bourbon in America.”

Contingent upon receiving tourism incentives, Heaven Hill Distillery’s expanded Bardstown visitor center will generate a significant amount of state and local tax revenue, as well as creating over 20 new full time and part time positions.
