THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF VELVET FIG BY WEMYSS MALTS NOW AS A 25 YEAR OLD LIMITED EDITION RELEASE – Scotch Whisky News

THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF VELVET FIG BY WEMYSS MALTS NOW AS A 25 YEAR OLD LIMITED EDITION RELEASE.

Wemyss Malts continues its 15th Anniversary celebrations this year with the triumphant return of Velvet Fig in the form of a 25 year old Sherry cask blended malt composed from casks of Highlands, Speyside and unpeated Islay whiskies.

Velvet Fig was Wemyss Malts first limited edition blended malt released back in 2014 and received its flavour led name in reference to the rich flavours from the sherry cask maturation.

The release was hugely successful and Velvet Fig later went on to win the Best Scotch Blended Malt at the 2015 World Whisky Awards. The original Velvet Fig is now sadly finished (except perhaps for a few bottles squirreled away by savvy whisky fans) and is still often fondly remembered and talked about among Wemyss Malts fan. With such fan reverence Wemyss Malts tasked themselves to bring back Velvet Fig and continue their exploration into sherry cask matured malt whiskies.

In 2019, Isabella Wemyss, Production Director for Wemyss Malts secured 5 casks of exceptional 1994 vintage sherry cask matured malt whisky from undisclosed Highlands and Speyside single malt distilleries and the blending team used these as the base to develop the new premium age statement Velvet Fig recipe.

Blender and Brand Manager for Wemyss Malts Steven Shand commented:

“With the Speyside and Highland casks as the base of the whisky we set about combining additional old casks of whisky from our stocks to add a velvety body, richness and complex wood tannin. By carefully selecting and adding several 1988 vintage casks of unpeated, sherry matured Bunnahabhain’s as the final 29% of the recipe we were able to achieve an aroma, flavour and body that did justice to the Velvet Fig name.”

The resulting whisky is an exquisitely fruity, rich and complex malt whisky with aromas of antique wood, vintage leather and velvety flavours of dark fruits and chocolate. It has the natural colour of deep copper and has been bottled non chill-filtered at 42.3%abv and carries a 25 year old age statement.

The whisky was unveiled at Wemyss Malts 15th anniversary celebration at Gosford House on the 4th of February and was initially preview released to Wemyss Malts Cask Club members.

The release will be available in the UK, EU and Asia as of the 25th of February with a suggested retail price of £126 in various spirits retailers and from wemysmalts.com.

Wemyss Malts Cask Club members will be posting their own reviews of Velvet Fig Aged 25 Years via Instagram from Monday the 24th to Thursday the 27th of February. You can find out what their thoughts are by following @wemyssmalts and the hashtag #WMCaskClub.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Announces Blanton’s Gold will be Available in the U.S. – American Whiskey News

Buffalo Trace Distillery Announces

Blanton’s Gold will be Available in the U.S.

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Feb 27, 2020) Fans of Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon have long asked for the Gold Edition to be available in the United States. This summer those bourbon lovers will get their wish. Available as a limited release in 2020, Blanton’s Gold will be released once every year in the U.S.

This is the first time the Blanton’s Gold Edition has been made available in the U.S. Previously the only version of the Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon available to fans stateside was the Original Single Barrel, bottled at 93 proof. While Blanton’s Original will still be available, the Gold Edition is now joining the ranks.

“We’ve seen Blanton’s soar in popularity over the last few years, and fans have asked us for the Gold version in the U.S. too,” said Kris Comstock, senior marketing director. “We’re thrilled to fulfill their requests this summer.”

The 103 proof Blanton’s Gold Edition is the same recipe as Blanton’s Original, but the proof is greater.  The bottle showcases a horse and jockey atop its stopper, in various poses to mimic running a horse race. The eight different horse and jockey stoppers feature a letter that collectors save to spell out the brand name “B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S.”  The horse and jockey on the Gold Edition is gold in color.

Tasting notes for Blanton’s Gold describe it as having a nose marked by honey, heavy rye, dried fruits, vanilla, and chocolate. The taste is described as full and rich, marked by apricot, butter, pepper, light honey, and oak. The finish has been called long, with toffee and apple, developing on pecan and caramel.

Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon is the world’s first single barrel bourbon, created in 1984 by Elmer T. Lee. Named after former distillery president Colonel Albert B. Blanton, Elmer recalled how Colonel Blanton would handpick “honey barrels” from the center cut of Warehouse H for the many parties Blanton held.  Many years later, the Distillery called upon Elmer to create a new bourbon in 1984 and Blanton’s was born – the world’s first single barrel bourbon.

Today, Blanton’s Single Barrel has become one of the most revered and award-winning bourbons on the market.  The Blanton’s Gold Edition was the second version created, after the Original 93 proof.  Gold will be available in the U.S. on a very limited basis for a suggested retail price of $120.  For more information on Blanton’s Gold Edition visit www.blantonsbourbon.com.

GLENGOYNE HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY UNVEILS “DUNCAN’S DRAM” – Scotch Whisky News

GLENGOYNE HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY UNVEILS “DUNCAN’S DRAM”

LIMITED-EDITION SINGLE CASK WHISKY TO BE RELEASED, HAND-SELECTED BY ASSISTANT DISTILLERY MANAGER, DUNCAN MCNICOLL, AFTER 43 YEARS AT GLENGOYNE DISTILLERY Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky today (27th February) revealed Duncan’s Dram, a limited-edition 17 Year Old Single Cask bottled in honour of Assistant Distillery Manager Duncan McNicoll, who retired in January 2020 after working at the distillery for 43 years.

To mark his many years of service, Glengoyne asked Duncan to hand-select one cask from the warehouses to be bottled under his own name. He picked cask number 561, a 17 Year Old single cask which was distilled on 24th April 2002. Only 520 numbered bottles have been produced, and Duncan has rightly been gifted bottle number one.  The remaining bottles are now available to buy from the Glengoyne Distillery shop as well as from the Glengoyne website (glengoyne.com).

Duncan began his career as a mashman at the Glengoyne Distillery in 1977, aged 20. He then worked as a stillman and latterly as Assistant Distillery Manager. He lives next door to the distillery, where his children were born and grew up.

The limited-edition single cask bottling was matured in an American Oak sherry butt, imparting a warm toffee colour with aromas of red apples, rosehip syrup, vanilla fudge, and candied lemons on the nose. It has rich, spicy oak on the palate, with flavours of dark brown sugar and lemon marmalade, and a long finish with a burst of fresh pineapple.

Robbie Hughes, Group Distillation Manager at Ian Macleod Distillers, said: “Duncan has been a beloved member of the Glengoyne family for over 40 years, so we felt there was no better way to honour his legacy than to release a whisky in his name, bottled from his favourite cask, hand-selected by Duncan himself.

“Duncan has gone from mashman, to stillman, to assistant distillery manager over 43 years, and has spent his final years passing on his tremendous knowledge to fellow members of the team, ensuring the same unhurried production methods of Glengoyne carry on for generations to come. Thank you again, Duncan.”

Duncan McNicoll, retired Assistant Distillery Manager, said: “While sad to be leaving the Glengoyne team, I have loved every minute of working here. It’s been such a massive part of my life, as well as my family’s. To be asked to personally select a cask for release is a true honour.

“Every single cask of whisky has its own character and flavour and no two are exactly the same, meaning this single cask release is entirely unique. With so many stunning drams to choose from it wasn’t easy picking a favourite, but I’m sure this one is a winner.”

This Glengoyne 17 Year Old Single Cask release is available from the Glengoyne Distillery shop and from the Glengoyne website (glengoyne.com), and is priced at £189 per bottle.

Also named Best American Whiskey Visitor Attraction of the Year

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Feb. 18, 2020) –The Icons of Whisky America Awards by Whisky Magazine named Buffalo Trace Distillery the 2020 Distiller of the Year and Visitor Attraction of the Year at a recent ceremony in New York City. The magazine also awarded E.H. Taylor, Jr. Straight Rye as the Best American Rye Whiskey of 2020.

“From our whiskies to our guest experience, our team at Buffalo Trace is focused on producing the very best, so we’re honored to be recognized in both respects,” Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley said. “These awards encourage us to continue investing in the Distillery, increase our whisky production, maintain our uncompromising quality standards, innovate through experimentation and win even more awards!”

Buffalo Trace Distillery focuses tirelessly on producing great whiskies, which have garnered more than 1,000 awards over the years, distinguishing it as the World’s Most Award-Winning Distillery.

As the popularity of its whiskies continues to grow, the Distillery has embraced an ongoing $1.2 billion investment to expand its distilling capabilities and make more whiskey. This investment includes the recent installation of four brand new 22-foot tall cookers, four new fermenters which each hold 92,000 gallons of mash, and seven new warehouses which each hold 58,800 barrels, with two more under construction and several more on the way.

The Icons of Whisky Visitor Attraction of the Year award follows Buffalo Trace’s recent announcement that it welcomed nearly 300,000 visitors over the course of 2019; a record-breaking 35 percent increase over the previous year.

In keeping with the Distillery’s commitment to provide a top-notch visitor experience, Buffalo Trace has begun working to expand its Visitor Center further back into its existing building, which will ultimately triple the size of the current Visitor Center and allow the Distillery to better accommodate the continued tourism growth. This renovation comes just five years after its last Visitor Center expansion, and is anticipated to be complete later this year. The expanded space will allow Buffalo Trace to further develop its visitor experience with new tour routes, tasting and events spaces and archive exhibits. More information about Buffalo Trace’s Distillery and Visitor Center expansions can be found here.

Lux Row Distillers Re-Launches Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon – American Whiskey News

Lux Row Distillers Re-Launches Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon

BARDSTOWN, KY (February 19, 2020) – To pay homage to the rich distilling tradition of Daviess County, Kentucky, Lux Row Distillers is re-launching Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon – an ultra-premium family of bourbons, with three variants.

This unique bourbon launches this week and consists of a mixed mash bill of both wheated and ryed bourbons for a balanced sweetness and spice. The three variants in this line are Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon – Cabernet Sauvignon Finish and Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon – French Oak Finish.

“The combination of mash bills really sets this bourbon apart – the smooth wheated mash bill and the traditional spicy ryed mash bill come together for a balanced taste profile,” says John Rempe, Head Distiller at Lux Row Distillers.

All three variants are bottled at 96 proof in attractive 750ml bottles with an embossed shoulder and topped with a natural cork. The Cabernet Sauvignon Finish has been rested for six months in cabernet sauvignon barrels from the Napa region in California for an additional level of complexity, while the French Oak Finish has been rested in French oak barrels for six months for a hint of dry oak.

“The secondary aging in the cabernet sauvignon and French oak barrels adds a nice extra layer of flavor with a slight sweet fruitiness and oaky caramel undertones,” adds Rempe.

The brand, bought by the David Sherman Corporation in 1993, honors Daviess County, which boasts a long history of distilled spirits and iconic distilleries that helped Kentucky earn its reputation as the home of great bourbons. One of the first distilleries in that area, Daviess County Distilling Company, with heritage dating back to 1874, was one of the few distilleries to survive prohibition.  It helped pave the way for the nearly 20 other large distilleries that operated in Daviess County by the early 1900s. Today, only three remain, but the county’s significance in bourbon history lives on.
