THE SECRET SPEYSIDE COLLECTION IS LAUNCHED, FEATURING FIFTEEN RARE SINGLE MALTS FROM SOUGHT-AFTER DISTILLERIES – Scotch Whisky News

THE SECRET SPEYSIDE COLLECTION IS LAUNCHED, FEATURING FIFTEEN RARE SINGLE MALTS FROM SOUGHT-AFTER DISTILLERIES

(Whisky Intelligence is publishing this old press release some time after the initial release)….Chivas Brothers is today releasing its biggest Single Malt collection to date, with the launch of fifteen aged Single Malt Scotch whiskies from four seldom-seen, yet highly sought-after Speyside, Scotland distilleries.

The Secret Speyside Collection is a carefully curated selection of 18-30 year old whiskies that herald from four of Speyside’s most elusive distilleries. Each has its own rich and unique history for Single Malt fans to discover, including the vanished distillery of Caperdonich, the pioneering Longmorn distillery, the landmark Glen Keith distillery, and the remote Braes of Glenlivet distillery.

The desirable fifteen-bottle collection consists of three rare Single Malts from each of Glen Keith, Longmorn and Braes of Glenlivet, together with three peated and three unpeated expressions from Caperdonich, which distilled its final Single Malt in 2002, before closing its doors and finally being taken down brick by brick in 2011.

The Secret Speyside Collection is the first of its kind from Pernod Ricard-owned Chivas Brothers and will offer Single Malt connoisseurs the chance to uncover, sample and collect some of the hidden malts at the heart of the iconic Speyside region that have rarely been made available in the past.

Alan Winchester, a Chivas Brothers Scotch whisky icon with over 30 years of Speyside distilling experience, commented:

“With centuries of rich whisky heritage against a jaw-dropping Scottish landscape, Speyside is the treasure chest of Scotch and brimming with untold stories. Curating the Collection has been a labour of love for the Chivas Brothers team; its contents have been hand-selected to help shine a light on some seldom-seen distilleries, their rare malts, and unique histories. Any whisky connoisseur will find something new in this world-class selection, which demonstrates the breadth of flavour and character that Speyside distilleries can achieve.”

The Secret Speyside Collection will launch from July as a Global Travel Retail exclusive for one year, before rolling out into selected markets globally from summer 2020.

Uncover the distilleries of the Secret Speyside Collection

Caperdonich – A Vanished Distillery

Once gone, there will never be another. This collection contains the only available Single Malts from this distillery, which was taken down brick by brick in 2011. The whiskies released from this ‘vanished distillery’ of Speyside offer a rare opportunity to discover and compare peated and unpeated expressions of the same age (21 and 25 year old), from the same distillery.

The unpeated spirit is full of ripe orchard fruits that give Caperdonich’s sweet single malt a complex body and long smooth finish. When gently peated, an untraditional process for a Speyside Single Malt, a sophisticated smokiness adds an extra element and depth of flavour

There will be six whiskies released from Caperdonich, with half being peated whiskies and the other half unpeated. The peated selection includes an 18 year old (48% ABV), a 21 year old (48% ABV) and a cask strength 25 year old whisky. The unpeated whiskies are a 21 year old 48% ABV) 25 year old (48% ABV), and a cask strength 30 year old. The peated 25 year old and non-peated 30 year old will be released in October 2019.

Longmorn – The Pioneering Distillery

Blending unique insights in technology and craft, Longmorn was designed by founder John Duff in 1894 to create a whisky of outstanding quality. Duff even built a railway station next to the distillery to facilitate supplies getting to the distillery and speed up the finished product getting into the hands of whisky lovers. One of Scotland’s best kept secrets, Longmorn has long been considered world class by distillers, blenders and connoisseurs, often referred to as ‘every distiller’s favourite apart from their own.’

The three whiskies from Longmorn in this collection are an 18 year old (48% ABV), 23 year old (48% ABV) and a cask strength 25 year old, with each bringing a more intense take on the soft, creamy toffee and rich flavour profile that is highly regarded by distillers and industry experts worldwide.

Glen Keith – The Landmark Distillery

Glen Keith was the first Speyside distillery built in the 20th century. The distillery rose from the ruins of an old mill on the banks of the River Isla, famed for its pure water and leaping wild salmon. This collection marks the first official* age-statement release this century from the landmark distillery.

The three whiskies from Glen Keith in this collection are a 21 year old, 25 year old and a 28 year old (all 43% ABV). Each is exceptionally smooth as Glen Keith’s pot stills are taller than most, giving an extra ‘copper kiss’ to the single malt and resulting in a complex, intensely smooth example of the classic Speyside style, bursting with juicy summer fruit notes.

Braes of Glenlivet – The Remote Distillery

This is the first official bottling* from one of the highest distilleries in Speyside. In years past, when the snow fell, it settled on the hills of Braes of Glenlivet first. The remote distillery was watched over by a lone keeper at night and was truly at the mercy of the uncompromising Scottish elements.

The three whiskies from Braes of Glenlivet in this collection are a 25 year old (48% ABV), 27 year old (48% ABV) and a cask strength 30 year old. Made using the purest water from the Preenie Well, 2 miles deep in the Braes hills, the resulting whisky is smooth, balanced and packed with tropical fruits.

Also today (Mar 9th), the company received a consignment of 4,000 litres of hand sanitiser gel ready to be packaged at its bottling plant in Kilmalid, Dumbarton. This delivery will be joined next week by a further 15,000 litres of hand sanitiser gel produced at Pernod Ricard’s Plymouth Gin distillery in England. After packaging, the hand sanitiser will be distributed to frontline healthcare workers across Scotland and to communities in the Dumbarton area.

Chivas Brothers will start packaging hand sanitiser tomorrow, starting with 1,000 litres per day and monitoring needs over the coming weeks.

Chivas Brothers CEO Jean-Christophe Coutures commented:

“Combatting COVID-19 requires a collective effort from everyone. We’re fortunate to have ready access to ethanol and state-of-the-art facilities, so we are determined to do all we can to help increase the production of hand sanitiser, which is so essential in preventing the spread of the virus. We are proud to be joining our fellow distillers across the industry and the wider Pernod Ricard group in this battle and will continue to look for ways to assist wherever it is needed.”

Business-wide effort

In addition to hand sanitiser production, Chivas Brothers has announced in recent weeks the introduction of a number of initiatives to support communities both on home soil and in international markets that continue to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chivas Brothers has reorganised its internal reward scheme so that when employee efforts are recognised, rewards can be donated to the National Emergencies Trust’s Coronavirus appeal, that the company will then double-up. The company is also making regular lump-sum contributions on behalf of all employees to NHS Charities Together, to support NHS staff and volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients during the crisis.

In addition, Chivas Brothers has accelerated its support of its 2020 Charity of the Year, MND Scotland, with a donation of £26,000, meeting its total £50,000 fundraising target nine months ahead of schedule. It has committed to continue fundraising efforts when possible and extend them throughout 2021.

With Blended Scotch Whisky Chivas’ global social enterprise competition curtailed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the $1 million prize fund of the Chivas Venture 2020 was distributed equally amongst the 26 finalists of this year’s competition – so that the funding can be put towards helping solve social, environmental and economic challenges and creating positive impact in a testing time for people across the globe.

Additionally, Blended Scotch Whisky Ballantine’s pledged its support for music communities worldwide at a time when COVID-19 restrictions are impacting their ability to do what they love and to make a living. The initiative, the first in a number planned for the coming months, sees grants distributed to community-driven music collectives around the world who will be taking part in Boiler Room’s recently announced ‘Streaming from Isolation’ programme.

America’s Largest Producer of Distilled Spirits Donates Nearly 15,000 Respirator Masks

in Wake of Ongoing Need

LOUISVILLE, KY (April 27, 2020) – The Sazerac Company, the largest producer of distilled spirits in North America, is donating 14,800 N95 respirator masks to the healthcare industry in various markets across the country.

In addition to the donation of N95 masks, Sazerac is supplying all of its team members with cloth face covers for personal protection.  Team members working at all of Sazerac’s production facilities will receive face covers for each shift they work as the company produces hand sanitizer for some of the world’s largest organizations in healthcare, government, military, retail, distribution, airline, pharmacy, and banking industries.

“Unfortunately N95 respirator masks remain scarce, so we are happy to be able to supply these to the healthcare industry in the fight against this pandemic,” said Matt Maimone, Sazerac’s chief operating officer.

Maimone adds, “We know the demand for hand sanitizer on an industrial scale is still great. To date, we’ve produced nearly 2,000,000 liters of hand sanitizer across our sites in North America and are continuing to source more ingredients to produce more every day.  Our workforce has risen to the occasion to help meet this demand, and we appreciate their willingness to step up.”

The initial run of sanitizer started in Kentucky at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Franklin County, and Sazerac continues to increase production at The Glenmore Distillery in Owensboro and across its other locations.

In addition to providing face covers to team members, all Sazerac plants have taken additional steps to operate in a safe and responsible manner and are following all CDC guidelines including rigorous cleaning, observing six feet social distancing, mandating its team members to stay home if not feeling well, and implementing protective screens where appropriate.

Chicago’s Hometown Spirits Company Donates Hand Sanitizer During Covid-19

Chicago’s Hometown Spirits Company Donates Hand Sanitizer During Covid-19

April 16, 2020 (CHICAGO) – Chicago-based Beam Suntory donated 2,000 gallons of its hand sanitizer to support local medical professionals, first responders and health facilities combatting COVID-19 in Illinois. Beam Suntory will continue to work closely with public officials to understand the most urgent needs and supply this critical product as available.

“Everyone at Beam Suntory is grateful to all those working so tirelessly on the front lines to protect our communities, and we’re proud to support their efforts,” said Albert Baladi, President and CEO at Beam Suntory. “Chicago thrives when neighbors support neighbors, and that’s helped inspire our team to rapidly repurpose part of our operations to produce hand sanitizer so that we can help meet the urgent needs of our city.”

Beam Suntory has also donated hand sanitizer to first responders, medical professionals, and other essential service providers in Kentucky. The company has adapted the pilot plant within its Global Innovation Center in Clermont, Kentucky into a space that safely and efficiently meets the stringent demands of producing FDA-approved hand sanitizer.

“In an unprecedented public health emergency, it’s critical that our community comes together to create a united front. When Beam Suntory reached out to my office about shifting their production to hand sanitizer, I was glad to connect its team with local hospitals and first responders,” said U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. “I’m grateful that organizations like Beam Suntory are adapting during this time of crisis to support our community and Chicagoans battling coronavirus on the front lines.”

“COVID-19 has absolutely disrupted our lives in Chicago; however; I am appreciative of the local philanthropic and business community, like Beam Suntory, via their donation of hand sanitizer to be used by first responders and medical personal on the front lines of treatment to our infected citizens.  I continue to encourage all to give as much as you can to those right now that need it the most,” said U.S. Representative Danny K. Davis.

“Beam Suntory’s actions support countless Chicagoans working day and night to fight this disease and demonstrate the vitally important role Chicago businesses play in our City’s response to this crisis and our future recovery,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. “I am grateful for our hometown company’s partnership during this difficult time, and look forward to Beam Suntory and its employees continuing to thrive in Chicago for years to come.”

In addition to hand sanitizer production, Beam Suntory has donated $1 million to the United States Bartenders Guild (USBG) and the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation in partnership with Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits. These organizations provide critical support for the bar and restaurant community by providing financial aid and other resources for workers who are most impacted by COVID-19. The company’s Maker’s Mark brand has also partnered with the LEE Initiative to expand its restaurant worker relief program to cities including Chicago.

Beam Suntory’s hand sanitizer donation is just the most recent example of the company’s commitment to Chicago. The company is partnering with City Colleges of Chicago to develop beverage management concentrations at the Washburne Culinary & Hospitality Institute. Classes are expected to begin this fall. Beam Suntory also partnered with the Friends of the Chicago River to improve conditions in local forest preserves and along the Chicago River, including near Beam Suntory’s global headquarters at the Mart.
