Evan Williams Unveils New Packaging for the Bourbon Franchise

First introduced in the 1950’s, Evan Williams Bourbon quickly became one of the nation’s leading Bourbons and Heaven Hill Distillery’s flagship brand. Today, the brand continues to break milestones at a historic pace, with the Evan Williams family of brands surpassing the three million case mark on an annual basis. To further bolster this growth, the evolution of the Evan Williams franchise packaging will feature key enhancements and a consistent look on the shelf.BARDSTOWN, Ky. – The Evan Williams Bourbon family, the second-largest selling Bourbon in the world, will soon grace retail shelves and on-premise establishments with a striking new look. Evan Williams Black, Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond and Evan Williams Flavors will receive a new signature bottle with updated label designs.

The following designs will soon mark Heaven Hill Distillery’s continued investment in Evan Williams Bourbon:

  • Evan Williams Black: Evan Williams Black carries the lineup featuring the new, signature glass defined by a curved bulb neck with new premium capsule closure decorated with the Evan Williams’ signature. The face label utilizes the iconic black and gold colors consumers have grown to love, but with a richer and vibrant gold ink throughout the label, finished by a new curve at the top to accentuate the new bottle. The label continues to feature the story of Evan Williams himself.
  • Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond: Featuring the most dramatic evolutionary change, the new design clearly emphasizes the 100 proof, bottled under government supervision and single distilling season. Evan Williams Bottled-In-Bond carries over the green and white label colors, reflecting a vintage flare showcasing the rich history behind Bottled-In-Bond products and their importance to the Whiskey category. A new premium capsule closure with the iconic tax strip seals the bottle and harkens to historic bottled-in-bond packaging requirements.
  • Evan Williams Flavors: Evan Williams Flavors will receive a streamlined approach consistent with the franchise with label design enhancements featuring a centered logo. The flavors will also be bottled in the new glass with the premium capsule closure.

“Evan Williams Bourbon is a testament to sustained success across the ebbs and flows of the American Whiskey category,” said Julie Cole, Evan Williams Senior Brand Manager. “We’re excited to rejuvenate the Evan Williams family packaging to both enhance the consumer experience and modernize the label design. Evan Williams was an entrepreneurial leader in the Bourbon movement, and we continue to honor his success through the award-winning Evan Williams Bourbon franchise.”

The new packaging will be available nationwide, launching now and throughout 2020. New bottles will be featured throughout future marketing programs and on evanwilliams.com.

MISTER SAM TRIBUTE WHISKEY ACHIEVED THE FINALIST AWARD FOR THE CHAIRMAN’S TROPHY DURING THE ULTIMATE SPIRITS CHALLENGE 2020 – Canadian Whisky News

MISTER SAM TRIBUTE WHISKEY ACHIEVED THE FINALIST AWARD FOR THE CHAIRMAN’S TROPHY DURING THE ULTIMATE SPIRITS CHALLENGE 2020

MONTREAL (Sept. 29, 2020) – The results of the Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2020 have been announced, and four whiskies from Sazerac Company’s Old Montreal Distillery received accolades. Mister Sam Tribute Whiskey received the Finalist award for the Chairman’s Trophy. The panel described Mister Sam’s flavor as “sweet and spicy aromatics combine orchards fruits like nectarine, apricot, and cherry, with intense woodsy cigar box for a pungent first impression. Pillowy in texture, the first wave of flavor is fruity, followed by the layers of vanilla kissed spice that linger after each sip.”

USC judges bestowed the Great Value award to Royal Canadian Small Batch Blended Canadian Whisky, while Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Canadian Whisky and High River Canadian Whisky received very good and strong recommendation reviews from the panel.

Ultimate Spirits Challenge’s methodology raises the standard for competitive beverage evaluation by instituting more rigorous judging. Each product is evaluated blind by panels in multi-stages assessments to remove any inherent or individual bias. Complete results for the Ultimate Spirit Challenge 2020 can be found at www.ultimate-beverage.com

The Old Montreal Distillery was constructed in the 1920s in Montreal’s historic district. Once the home of Sam Bronfman’s Seagram empire, spirits industry leader Sazerac purchased the landmark in 2011.  After successfully completing an ambitious facility modernization, the distillery is again producing world-class whisky, including the world’s first single barrel Canadian Whisky, Caribou Crossing, and the highly coveted Mister Sam Tribute Whiskey.

anCnoc releases Peatheart Batch 2 for Global Market – Scotch Whisky News

anCnoc releases Peatheart Batch 2 for Global Market

anCnoc Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky continues its journey ‘to the dark side’ with the global release today (30th September 2020) of Peatheart Batch 2: the second consignment of its award-winning permanent peated expression.

After a limited release in Sweden, this second bottling will now be available to drinkers around the world, following the international success of Peatheart Batch 1 which was launched in 2017.

Batch 2 features the same smoky, mellow wood notes and phenol content as the original (40ppm) – but this time a more subtle smokiness is balanced with anCnoc’s brighter, fruitier flavours.

Tasting Notes

Colour: light gold

Nose: Understated peat smoke and barbecue balanced by ripe pineapples, pears and a dark, rich tone of baked toffee apples. Subtle vanilla and sparks of fresh lemon rind lend lightness and elegance to the composition.

Taste: Structured and full, with rich smoke in balance with juicy gummy bears and the light, fizzy sweetness of spun sugar. Undertones of a hay barn and fudge give it a delicious weight.

Finish: Long and growing, distinctly spicy and sweet with a warming, smoky finale.

Crafted at Knockdhu Distillery in the small village of Knock, by Huntly in Aberdeenshire, Peatheart uses peated barley in production to add a rich, smoky twist to anCnoc’s classic new make spirit, before maturation in American Oak ex-bourbon barrels.

Presented in a dramatic opaque black bottle and tube, which glisten with touches of bronze and white, it is set to be a perfect gift for whisky fans over the Christmas and New Year season.

Knockdhu Distillery Manager Gordon Bruce explained that the new batch is true in flavour and character to the original, but with intriguing differences that will delight whisky lovers. He said: ‘Despite having the same ppm as Batch 1, slight variations in maturation mean that our second Peatheart bottling offers something a little bit different, with a more refined smoky character. The combination of fresh, fruity anCnoc notes with these more mellow peat flavours creates a wonderful modern whisky that will be enjoyed by whisky fans across the spectrum. The peaty range now sits alongside our signature anCnoc whiskies to give drinkers two very distinctive sides to our whisky. Whether it’s a dram from our ‘dark’ or ‘light’ side, both represent our commitment to using the best traditional techniques and craftsmanship to make a very modern single malt whisky’.

Peatheart Batch 2 is set to be in high demand following the critical acclaim achieved by Batch 1 – which included a coveted category gold medal at the World Whiskies Awards in 2019.

anCnoc Peatheart Batch 2 (40ppm) is bottled in 70cl at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and with natural colour. 1700 cases of the new batch will be available in the UK and for global markets, sold in independent and specialist retailers and whisky shops from 1st October. RRP £52.

ABOUT ANCNOC

anCnoc is produced at Knockdhu Distillery, which sits in the shadow of the ‘Black Hill’ (Knockdhu in Gaelic) near Huntly in Aberdeenshire. It was established in 1894 by the pioneering John Morrison, after he spotted an abundance of the natural resources needed to make fine malt whisky in the area: pure spring water and plentiful supplies of peat and barley.

Today, Knockdhu is known as one of the smallest and most enchanting distilleries in the Scottish Highlands, producing a refreshingly modern single malt whisky with the most traditional skills and processes. The Black Hill continues to supply pure water for the whisky making process. The distillery’s two copper pot stills replicate the original 1894 design, their bulbous bases giving anCnoc its light, fresh, fruity flavour. Old fashioned worm tubs are used to condense the vaporised alcohol. And Distillery Manager Gordon Bruce, and his team, make up one of the smallest workforces in any distillery (including many dogs!)

anCnoc’s first foray into peated whisky began back in 2014 with the launch of a new ‘Peaty’ range, inspired by the whiskies made early in Knockdhu’s history using local peated barley.

ARMORIK GOES PEATED! – French Whisky News

ARMORIK GOES PEATED!

After many years of ageing, tasting, we are finally ready to launch… our heavily peated Whisky. We are improving our game with a new line of peated single malts named Yeun Elez.

The Yeun Elez range, just like Armorik is distilled, matured and bottled at the Distillerie Warenghem, in Brittany, France.

YEUN ELEZ

GI Whisky Breton Single Malt, 46%, 70 cl Un-chill filtered – Natural colour

Yeun Elez is a peated Breton Whisky, distilled from peated (50ppm) malted barley from Scotland. Breton Single Malt Whisky, it has been distilled and matured to highlight its delicate, elegant and fruity peat. The name Yeun Elez comes from an old peat bog located in the heart of the Armorique Natural Park, which is also home to many Breton legends (such as that of Tadic Coz represented on the pack).

The legend

Located in the Monts d’Arrée, in the heart of the Armorique Natural Park, the Yeun Elez is a swamp considered in Breton legends as the Gateway to Hell.

According to the legend reported by Anatole le Braz, it is the place where the evil souls who haunted the living were thrown into hell. Tadic-Coz, knew the secret and the ritual of locking the souls of ghosts in the body of a black dog. He instructed young Jobic to guide the dog towards the underworld gates. The latter, going from presbytery to presbytery, led the black dog to the rector of Commana. Together, at sunset, they threw the black dog into the Yeun Elez swamp, condemning the ghost to hell.

« We are entering the Yeun Elez, he said to Jobic. Whatever you hear, don’t look away. It is about your life in this world and your salvation in the next. »

A.Le Braz, La Légende de la mort en Basse-Bretagne, 1893.

Tasting Notes

Pale yellow with golden reflections.

Nose: Beautiful aromatic intensity, the peat is medicinal (camphor, cloves) but supported by fruity notes, bananas, cooked peaches, and pastry (cream pastry).

Palate: The smoke rounds the palate, citrus notes bringing freshness. Nice roundness with a hint of salinity.

Final: A lingering, iodized and spicy finish, ending with a warm wood fire.

Yeun Elez is the result of the distillery’s foray into the territory of peated whiskies. We offer you a peaty variation of our single malt Armorik: We use Scottish peated barley, water from our own source and our artisanal know-how. Using our traditional pot stills, we strive to create an exceptional single malt that reflects the Breton character.

Cheshire Whisky Broker sells Macallan 18 year old 28 bottle Vertical for £44,000 – Scotch Whisky News

Cheshire Whisky Broker sells Macallan 18 year old 28 bottle Vertical for £44,000

Mark Littler Ltd, a whisky and antiques broker based in Cheshire, has sold a 28 bottle vertical of Macallan 18 year old for £44,000. The sale to an international buyer was completed in the first month of Mark Littler’s new online brokerage store launching.

The story of the vertical gripped the interest of the national and international community as news broke of the seller’s incredible story of receiving a bottle as a birthday present from his dad each year – some of the bottles cost less than £40 originally. 28 year old Mathew decided to sell the collection because he is looking to buy his first house. Now that the sale of the vertical has gone through he has been able to put a deposit down on a flat.

An offer has been accepted for the flat we were wanting to buy and we are just waiting on solicitors and other legalities to finalise and then with some luck we will be moving in in a month or two,” explains Matthew. Who has also started a collection to eventually hand down to his own children. “I already have started my new collection starting with this year’s bottle, and I am hoping to hand it down to kids in the future when the time is right.”

Matthew’s dad is thrilled that his presents have been so successful for his son, “I am absolutely delighted that Matthew has used his collection wisely and it makes me very proud as a father that I have been able to help in some small way.”

The story broke worldwide from New York to Hong Kong and was trending on the BBC website while Mathew was also interviewed on BBC breakfast.

The knock on effect has been incredible with contacts across the industry reporting a big uptick in interest in whisky as an investment, both as bottles and casks.

“Complete verticals are very rare, and are usually split into smaller groups or individual bottles when they are sold, however the appetite for Macallan whisky never ceases to amaze me. We are thrilled to have helped Matthew release the potential from his collection and to have found a new home for the prized collection,” say Mark Littler. “The online brokerage shop is a new venture for us, and to have sold such a great collection in our first month of trading is fantastic and shows the interest in whisky both nationally and internationally.”

INTRODUCING THE MACALLAN EDITION NO.6 – A WHISKY INSPIRED BY A LEGENDARY RIVER – Scotch Whisky News

INTRODUCING THE MACALLAN EDITION NO.6 –

A WHISKY INSPIRED BY A LEGENDARY RIVER

21st September 2020, London: The Macallan has unveiled Edition No.6, a new limited edition single malt whisky celebrating the natural wonders of The Macallan Estate, and the vibrant lifeforce that sustains it – the River Spey.

Marking the sixth and final release in The Macallan Edition Series, Edition No.6 tells the story of a unique land and an extraordinary river, where whisky making, agriculture and nature all live in total harmony. It brings together The Macallan’s Ghillie, Robert Mitchell; Hardy, the world’s most renowned fly fishing brand; and The Atlantic Salmon Trust, which has over 50 years’ experience in salmon conservation.

The Macallan Estate lies on the banks of the River Spey, one of Scotland’s most legendary rivers renowned across the world as a home to the mighty Atlantic salmon. A day on this river, with its pure water, stunning wild landscape and calmness is a once in a lifetime experience.

The Macallan’s Ghillie, Robert Mitchell is the guardian of The Macallan’s stretch of the River Spey and takes great pride in his role caring for the river. He said: “A day on the River Spey is supremely special. You feel that you are escaping from everything and truly connecting with nature and with our Distillery completing this stunning landscape, there is no other place in the world capable of drawing so many wonders together. We are proud custodians of our one-and-three-quarter mile stretch of the River Spey and advocate for sustainability of the wildlife in and around it and so all fishing at The Macallan is catch and release.”

Inspired by the remarkable experience offered by the Spey, The Macallan Whisky Maker, Steven Bremner, created Edition No.6 by choosing five cask styles that embody unique stories related to the river and its unparalleled natural landscape.

Crafted from a combination of American and European oak sherry seasoned casks, Edition No.6 captures the River Spey’s energy; the warm, welcoming personality of The Macallan’s Ghillie; the classic craftsmanship of Hardy; the extraordinary life of the Atlantic salmon on the beat; and the mastery of whisky making on The Macallan Estate, which has taken place since 1824.

The result is a multifaceted whisky delivering aromas of fresh fruits, nutmeg and toffee merged with oak and flavours of ripe plum, vibrant sweet oranges and cinnamon, developing into spicy fresh fruits and creamy chocolate and toasted oats at the finish.

Steven Bremner, The Macallan Whisky Maker, said: “From its early days of whisky making almost 200 years ago, The Macallan has been strongly inspired by and intrinsically connected to nature. It is the force that flows through everything we do at The Macallan and our whisky is enriched by its powerful presence. Edition No.6 is inspired by the natural world surrounding our Distillery, which has so much to offer and enjoy, in particular the River Spey, which is so vibrant, and full of energy.

“This complex single malt provides the perfect conclusion to the Edition Series as there is so much to discover in this whisky. The natural colour of antique brass derived from The Macallan’s exceptional oak casks indicates the richness of flavour that awaits and there is a structure and depth that is uncovered more and more over time.”

To protect the magical sense of the Spey that lies at the heart of Edition No.6, The Macallan has launched a new charitable partnership with The Atlantic Salmon Trust to help to conserve the at-risk fish, whose numbers have declined so rapidly in recent years.

The Atlantic Salmon Trust is protecting wild salmon and sea trout wherever they roam, especially in places like the River Spey, by tracking their migration across thousands of kilometres from their dominion to the open oceans. As a guardian of one of the last sanctuaries of Scottish salmon, The Macallan is supporting The Trust’s vital conservation work on the River Spey and beyond.

The Edition Series explores the unique and defining elements which make The Macallan one of the world’s most revered single malts. Each release reveals the detail of whisky making and showcases the absolute skill of the whisky maker, while sharing the story of The Macallan’s exceptional oak casks and mastery behind the perfect cask selection since 1824.

The Macallan Edition No.6 has an RRP of £95 and will be available at The Whisky Exchange, Master of Malt, The Whisky Shop and other specialist retailers from September 29th 2020. For further information visit www.themacallan.com

Notes

About The Macallan

Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the world’s most admired and awarded single malt whiskies. The reputation of The Macallan is based on a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character. An obsession with excellence has been the hallmark of The Macallan since its founding, by Alexander Reid, on a plateau above the river Spey in north-east Scotland.

In 2018, The Macallan unveiled its new £140 million distillery and visitor experience on its Speyside estate, increasing investment in whisky, warehousing and in The Macallan’s signature sherry-seasoned oak casks.  The striking contemporary architecture, cut into the slope of the land, takes its cues from ancient Scottish hills.  It stands nearby Easter Elchies House, the Highland Manor built in 1700 which has been The Macallan’s spiritual home since 1824.  The new distillery marks an important milestone, recognising the significant journey of The Macallan since 1824 and marking an exciting new chapter in the evolution of the luxury single malt.

Winners announced as the World’s Favourite Whisky Glass sponsors Scottish International Crime Writing Awards and takes a leading role in short story – Whisky News

Winners announced as the World’s Favourite Whisky Glass sponsors Scottish International Crime Writing Awards and takes a leading role in short story

Award winning Scottish family business Glencairn Crystal is proud to sponsor this year’s 2020 McIlvanney Prize for the Scottish Crime Book of the Year and the Bloody Scotland Debut Crime Novel of the Year, with its famous Glencairn Glass.

The winners were announced at the opening of the Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival on Friday evening. Two debut women writers published by Transworld have scooped the prestigious awards for the first time; the winner of the McIlvanney Prize 2020 is Francine Toon with Pine, and the winner of the Debut Prize is Deborah Masson with Hold Your Tongue.

All four finalists for the Debut Prize, along with Gordon Brown – the crime writing marketing director at Glencairn Crystal – and one of Bloody Scotland’s founding directors, have also collaborated on a short story which was published exclusively in Scotland’s The Sunday Post newspaper at the weekend. The gripping short story features the Glencairn Crystal Studio premises, home of The Glencairn Glass, and is soon to be broadcast on the Tartan Noir podcast as well as via The Glencairn Glass website with the five authors narrating the story.

It is the first year that The Glencairn Glass has sponsored the prizes and been involved in the Bloody Scotland Crime Writing Festival. Kirsty Nicholson, Glencairn Crystal’s Marketing Manager said:

‘First time authors winning both prizes this year highlights what a bright future the fantastic tradition of Scottish crime writing has. We are delighted and proud to sponsor such prestigious awards with The Glencairn Glass and would like to congratulate both Francine and Deborah, while wishing them all the best for the future.’

The annual Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival took place over the weekend. Usually based in Stirling, Bloody Scotland has brought hundreds of crime writers – new and established –  to the stage along with enthusiastic festival attendees since 2012. Due to Covid-19, the festival was forced to take place virtually online this year, however it meant that far greater audiences could attend the virtual events which featured some of the biggest crime writers in the world such as Val McDermid and Ian Rankin in Scotland and Lee Child and Lawrence Block in the US, as well as the Never Ending Panel featuring 26 authors on screen over four hours.
