Major whisky makers join forces for first-of-its-kind peatland revival at RSPB reserve – Islay Whisky News

Major whisky makers join forces for first-of-its-kind peatland revival at RSPB reserve

Today a landmark conservation partnership has been announced, with RSPB Scotland and major whisky distillers Suntory Global Spirits, Diageo and The Glenmorangie Company uniting to restore peatland on Islay; one of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes.

The project at The Oa nature reserve is set to secure vital habitats for wildlife, store carbon, and celebrate the cultural roots that link Scotland’s nature, people, and whisky. This unprecedented sector-wide collaboration underlines how working together across industries is vital to restoring Scotland’s nature.

Over the next five years, the distilleries will collectively contribute £1.6 million to restore approximately 1,000 hectares of peatland. The focus will include making the peatland more resistant to flooding, improving resilience against wildfires, and providing improved habitat for many species, transforming the landscape into a healthy, thriving blanket bog.

The peatlands of Scotland are set to play a pivotal role in the country’s response to climate change and species loss. This internationally important habitat sequesters large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere, storing an estimated ten times as much carbon as the entirety of the UK’s forests. Experts often highlight the value of peatland restoration in tackling climate change and mitigating its impacts.

Peatland also acts as a vital habitat for a variety of plants and animals with the restoration work on The Oa set to benefit threatened species such as Curlew, Snipe, Hen Harrier and Large Heath Butterfly.

“This incredibly exciting partnership at the Oa will allow us to return some of Scotland’s large and internationally important peatlands back to health,” said RSPB Scotland director Anne McCall. “It’s a shining example of how conservation and industry can work hand in hand in restoring Scotland’s incredible and unique habitats. We are extremely encouraged to see businesses collaborating to share the responsibility of environmental restoration and protection.

“Healthy peatlands also help improve water quality, which should benefit both wildlife and people.”

The Oa contains a diverse array of habitats and species, from windswept moorland to nature-friendly farmland.

However, much of the blanket bog on the nature reserve has been drained due to centuries of domestic peat cutting. This has reduced the peat’s capacity to take in carbon from the air.  Restoring this land will allow the peat to revegetate and return to a healthy, thriving habitat that delivers positively for climate and biodiversity.

Alistair Longwell, Head of Distilling and Environment at Suntory Global Spirits, says: “We’re delighted to be part of this forward-thinking collaboration that combines the expertise of RSPB and industry counterparts to restore peatland on Islay. It marks the latest step in Suntory Global Spirits’ ongoing global sustainability commitment, including the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ initiative. We have dedicated more than $4 million to the conservation and restoration of peatlands and natural watersheds, and to date we have restored over 370 hectares across Scotland, including at The Oa. We look forward to working with our new partners to continue protecting these unique landscapes for generations to come.”

Kristin Hughes, Global SVP for Sustainability at Diageo, says: “Collective action across industries and with environmental leaders is essential if we are to make a lasting impact in restoring Scottish peatlands. By bringing together diverse expertise, resources, and shared commitment, we can accelerate progress toward real, measurable results. Across our peat work, we will invest in improved scientific understandings of the multiple benefits peatland restoration can bring, such as water management, carbon capture and biodiversity. We look forward to delivering collaborative impact and strengthening the case for peatland restoration across Scotland and beyond.”

Caspar MacRae, President and CEO of The Glenmorangie Company, says:At Ardbeg, we recognise the vital role peatlands play, in Scotland’s natural heritage and in securing a sustainable future. We are proud to be part of this partnership at The Oa, working alongside RSPB Scotland and fellow distillers to restore this precious landscape. By investing in the health of our peatlands, we are investing in the resilience of our environment, supporting biodiversity, and safeguarding the legacy for generations to come.”

Kentucky Distillers’ Association Welcomes Benson Valley Bourbon as Newest Member – American Whiskey News

KENTUCKY DISTILLERS’ ASSOCIATION WELCOMES BENSON VALLEY BOURBON AS NEWEST MEMBER

DISTILLERY HONORS CRAFTSMANSHIP PAVED ON HISTORICAL GROUNDS

FRANKFORT, KY. — The Kentucky Distillers’ Association today announced Benson Valley Bourbon as the newest member of the non-profit trade group that unites and leads Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry.

Established on historic property acquired by the company in 2022, Benson Valley Bourbon is located along the banks of Benson Creek on land that was once home to the former Old Kennebec Distillery.

As a nod to the area’s historic legacy, the distillery uses the same limestone spring that was first used nearly a century ago. As it passes through limestone, the water is naturally filtered of iron, sulfur, and other impurities, making it an essential component of Kentucky Bourbon and Benson Valley Bourbon’s time-honored methods.

Since re-igniting operations this year, the distillery, located at 1501 Benson Valley Road, has already produced more than 400 barrels, with storage capacity planned for more than 14,000 barrels. With a focus on honoring their deep roots in craftsmanship and quality, Benson Valley Bourbon still fills 10-hoop barrels, just as Old Kennebec Distillery once did.

“Each day is an opportunity to build upon the rich legacy of our historic grounds,” said owner Russ Blakeley. “Joining the KDA was a natural step for our distillery to celebrate the living history of Kentucky Bourbon.

“From honoring the land’s pure ingredients, like the tried and true limestone spring, to the spirit of the distillery that came before, we look forward to joining the rich community that KDA fosters.”

As the ever-growing community of KDA continues to grow its footprint across the Bluegrass, KDA President Eric Gregory welcomed Benson Valley Bourbon into the new era of Kentucky Bourbon.

“It’s safe to say that Kentucky Bourbon is Kentucky’s greatest story. As Benson Valley Bourbon marries their historic grounds with their new, modern offerings, they serve as a reminder of the rich Bourbon legacy that’s strengthening our communities: one pour at a time,” shared Gregory.

Benson Valley Bourbon’s addition to the KDA reflects the continued expansion of Kentucky’s Bourbon industry, a $9 billion economic engine that generates more than 23,000 jobs that attracted 2.7 million visitors in 2024 through the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®.

Benson Valley Bourbon joins KDA as a “Craft” level member, aging between 1-1,000 barrels annually.

Angus Dundee Distillers marks major milestone with first spirit filling at new Chinese distillery  – Chinese Whisky News

Angus Dundee Distillers marks major milestone with first spirit filling at new Chinese distillery

Angus Dundee Distillers, which owns Tomintoul and Glencadam distilleries in Scotland, has celebrated a key milestone in the development of its first malt whisky distillery in Chun’an, China.

The Chun’an Malt Whisky Distillery has now officially transitioned from construction to production with the ceremonial filling of its first spirit into the inaugural cask.

Overlooking the picturesque Thousand Island Lake, often celebrated as ‘the finest water under the heaven’, the distillery will marry traditional Scotch whisky-making with the distinctive environment and cultural heritage of the region.

Iain Lochhead, Director of Angus Dundee Distillers, said: “Chun’an Distillery is a unique opportunity to combine Scotland’s whisky heritage with one of China’s most inspiring natural landscapes.

“This area is popular due to the exceptional natural beauty of its lakes and mountains and the design of the site itself reflects this, embracing the aesthetics of the local Jiangnan Huizhou architectural style, with every element being built with precision and care.”

As a strategic investment by Angus Dundee Distillers in China, Chun’an Distillery draws deeply from the group’s Scotch whisky heritage. The distillery continues two centuries of traditional whisky-making philosophy practiced at Angus Dundee’s historic Scottish distilleries, employing authentic single malt production methods including traditional copper pot still distillation, rigorous yeast management, precise cut control and a diversified cask maturation programme.

With all elements in place, the First Spirit Filling Ceremony, attended by Angus Dundee directors and distinguished guests, marked the beginning of the whisky’s long maturation journey. The event, set against the spectacular backdrop of Thousand Island Lake, concluded with a farm-to-table luncheon inspired by the surrounding mountains and local terroir.

Looking ahead, the Chun’an Distillery site, which spans more than 20 acres, is set to become a fully integrated whisky destination with visitors able to explore immersive production galleries, tasting rooms, experiential dining, retail areas and extensive outdoor spaces for events and tourism. The visitor experience is expected to open mid-2026.

Iain Lochhead added: “The ceremonial filling of the first cask represents a defining moment for our Chinese venture. As we expand our presence in a market we believe will be central to the future of the whisky industry, we are proud to bring our experience and craftsmanship to this region, creating a world-class distillery and visitor experience.”

With Chun’an Distillery, Angus Dundee Distillers continues its mission to expand the reach of authentic single malt whisky while demonstrating how Scottish expertise can evolve in new terroirs. This landmark project signals the company’s commitment to crafting exceptional whisky and positioning Thousand Island Lake as a future centre for global whisky appreciation.

Angus Dundee Distillers

Angus Dundee Distillers, founded in 1950, owns the Glencadam Distillery, Tomintoul Distillery, and a modern blending and bottling plant in Scotland. Tomintoul Distillery

Tomintoul Distillery is nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, within the whisky producing region of Speyside. The distillery, established in 1965, is named after the nearby village of Tomintoul, the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland.

Tomintoul’s signature range includes the popular 10-Year-Old, 14-Year-Old and 16-Year-Old, as well as the multi-award-winning Cigar Malt, premium 21-Year-Old and 25-Year-Old and a series of special cask finishes.

Old Ballantruan, the heavily peated Speyside malt, is also distilled at Tomintoul, taking its name from the distillery’s exceptional water source, the Ballantruan Spring.

Glencadam Distillery

Established in 1825, Glencadam Distillery is steeped in history, heritage and tradition, handcrafting single malt Scotch whisky in a process that’s remained unchanged for 200 years. In 2021, Glencadam Distillery re-installed a working internal waterwheel, modelled on the original which was used to power the distillery back in in 1825.

One of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, Glencadam was mothballed for several years before it was purchased and re-opened by Angus Dundee Distillers in 2003.

Today, Glencadam’s multi-award-winning range includes American Oak Reserve, Reserva Andalucía, the 10-Year-Old, 13-Year-Old, 15-Year-Old, 18-Year-Old and 25-Year-Old expressions, as well as a series of special cask finishes.

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Fall 2025 Edition of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series – American Whiskey News

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Fall 2025 Edition of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series

BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Heaven Hill Distillery announces the release of the Fall 2025 edition of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series, an 11-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Comprised of barrels produced in the fall of 2014, and bottled in the fall of 2025, the sixteenth national release ushers in the latest hallmark series to the bottled-in-bond legacy.

Bottled in an ornate decanter, the fall edition bares a black label, consistent across each of the brand’s fall releases. This edition’s tax strip, which has always been a signature of transparency on bottled-in-bond products, will disclose when the liquid was produced and bottled. The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series Fall 2025 edition will be available in the 750ml size on an allocated basis. It meets the strict requirements of a bottled-in-bond: the product of a single distillery from a single distilling season, aged a minimum of four years, and bottled at 100 proof or 50% alcohol by volume. The edition is available at a suggested retail price of $159.99.

This release of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey shows a bright amber color, opening on the nose with rich bourbon sweetness layered with leather, subtle oak, and warm baking spices. The palate is rich and velvety, leading with honey and butterscotch before unfolding into notes of plums, peaches, and figs. Its finish is warm and sweet, with dark fruit deepening into soft milk chocolate as it gently fades.

“Every release of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series reflects our dedication to tradition and meticulous craft,” said Conor O’Driscoll, Master Distiller at Heaven Hill. “The 11-year-old Fall 2025 edition carries a richness and poise that exemplify what this series stands for and why the bottled-in-bond legacy remains so important to Heaven Hill.”

As a leader of the Bottled-in-Bond category, Heaven Hill is proud to offer a premium, allocated product within this special class which showcases the authenticity and quality of the company’s American Whiskey portfolio. The legendary Old Fitzgerald line, which was acquired by Heaven Hill in 1999, is well known for its distilling pedigree and its history as a luxury brand first sold in the finest rail lines and steamships. The packaging was inspired by an original 1950’s Old Fitzgerald diamond decanter and pays homage to the history of the brand being traditionally bottled in artistic decanters of all shapes and sizes. The black label features the time-honored graphic of a key, commemorating an important element in original labels and the brand’s slogan since the 1940’s, “Your key to hospitality”.

THE BORDERS DISTILLERY ROLLS OUT REVOLUTIONARY TECH AHEAD OF SINGLE MALT LAUNCH – Scotch Whisky News

THE BORDERS DISTILLERY ROLLS OUT REVOLUTIONARY TECH AHEAD OF SINGLE MALT LAUNCH

Utilising new technology, the Hawick-based distillery will be able to track production from end to end through an advanced online platform

The Borders Distillery has introduced the revolutionary, cloud based technology, Bottle ERP, in a move that will allow it to achieve its growth ambitions ahead of the release of its first single malt Scotch whisky.

Partnering with premier consulting firm Catalyst ERP, the distillery has implemented Bottle ERP, a comprehensive spirit management solution designed to streamline business and operational efficiencies. Powered by NetSuite’s world-leading cloud platform, Bottle ERP equips the team to track the journey from field to glass with greater clarity and control, while strengthening quality assurance, customer engagement and cask management. The platform also includes the fully integrated warehouse management solution, WMS Go.

At the forefront of the spirits industry’s digital revolution, the transformation comes at a pivotal time for The Borders Distillery. Established in Hawick in 2018, the distillery has brought the craft of Scotch whisky making back to the Scottish Borders for the first time since 1837 and is currently gearing up to launch its first single malt Scotch.

The introduction of Bottle ERP is just one part of a wider investment project at The Borders Distillery, as the company pursues its ambitious goals of becoming a household name in Scotch whisky.

David Shuttleworth, distiller at The Borders Distillery, commented:

“Implementing Catalyst’s Bottle ERP is just the beginning; we’ve now laid down a foundation from which we will begin to build our virtual distillery on. Working in partnership with Catalyst, we’re building a system that has long been sought after within the whisky industry – covering the whole process from end to end. I strongly believe the system will be transformative for The Borders Distillery and shows what collective thinking and collaborative working can achieve – particularly in an industry which craves technological advances.”

Nathan Cahoon, Chief Operating Officer of The Borders Distillery, added:

“Through our work with Catalyst we have delivered a full digital transformation within the distillery – allowing our team to follow the production journey from ingredients through to cask selection, maturation and, eventually, bottling. Being able to track and demonstrate the provenance of our whisky is more important now than ever before, and Bottle ERP allows us to do this seamlessly. At The Borders Distillery we bring together industry traditions with a forward-thinking approach, allowing us to address consumer demands on a global scale.”

The release of The Borders Distillery’s Single Malt will rely heavily on the smooth implementation of the company’s new Bottle ERP system, ensuring the distillery has a product that is fit for modern consumption.

Sam A’Bear, Catalyst Bottle ERP – Sales Manager, Distillery Specialist said:

“The implementation of Bottle ERP is transforming how distilleries operate and is driving digital innovation across the whisky industry. By connecting every stage of production, from grain sourcing through to bottling and beyond, Bottle ERP brings together all aspects of a distillery’s operations within one unified system. The platform empowers producers with unprecedented visibility, traceability and control over their processes. The Borders Distillery is leading by example, demonstrating how technology can enhance tradition. Their adoption of Bottle ERP shows that data and craftsmanship can work hand in hand to produce world-class whisky with complete provenance.”

The launch of The Borders Distillery’s first Single Malt Scotch is imminent. As the first distillery to operate in the region for nearly 200 years, the Hawick-based distillery’s focus is to proudly showcase the exceptional quality and creativity the long-untouched whisky region has to offer.

Over the past seven years, the company has nurtured and trained a new generation of in-house distillers. In that time, it has laid down a fruit-forward spirit made exclusively from barley grown within 35 miles of the distillery, through the Borders Growers & Distillers programme in partnership with Simpsons Malt.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye Named Whisky Advocate’s 2025 “Whisky of the Year”

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye Named Whisky Advocate’s 2025 “Whisky of the Year”

First-Ever Barrel Proof Rye from the Elijah Craig Family Earns the Top Spot in the Prestigious Whisky Advocate Top 20 Ranking

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  (December 2025) – Elijah Craig, the award-winning family of premium American Whiskeys, is proud to announce that Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye has been named Whisky Advocate’s 2025 Whisky of the Year, topping the publication’s coveted Top 20 list. This honor recognizes not only the exceptional quality of this inaugural Barrel Proof Rye release, but also Elijah Craig’s continued leadership in defining excellence within American Whiskey. It also adds to Heaven Hill’s distinguished barrel proof accolades, including Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon’s Whisky of the Year win in 2017 and Larceny Barrel Proof’s top ranking in 2020. Elijah Craig Rye is no stranger to the list—Elijah Craig Straight Rye debuted in the top ten in 2020 at No. 7—and this year’s recognition marks the first time a rye whiskey has earned Whisky Advocate’s highest honor, a historic achievement for both the brand and the category.

Released in September 2025 as the first Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey in the Elijah Craig portfolio, this inaugural release showcases the brand’s signature balance of bold character, nuanced flavor, and uncompromising craftsmanship. Under the guidance of Master Distiller Conor O’Driscoll, the team selected barrels that delivered extraordinary depth and approachability. Aged 12 years and 3 months and bottled at 108 proof, this uncut, non-chill filtered expression quickly earned praise from whiskey enthusiasts and critics alike.

As someone who helped bring the Elijah Craig brand to life and guide its growth for decades, Max L. Shapira holds a uniquely personal connection to this milestone. “To have Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye recognized as Whisky of the Year during our 90th anniversary year is profoundly meaningful,” said Shapira, Executive Chairman, Heaven Hill Brands. “For nine decades, our family has remained committed to elevating American Whiskey with patience, integrity, and a deep respect for tradition. This award is a remarkable tribute to the generations of craftspeople who have shaped Heaven Hill, and to the bright future of American Whiskey that we continue to build together.”

Crafted to showcase Rye Whiskey in its purest form, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye reveals aromas of baking spices, gingerbread, and molasses, followed by a complex palate of stewed fruits and cinnamon. The finish lingers with nutmeg and a generous burst of rye spice, delivering a warm, satisfying close that reflects its extended aging and meticulous barrel selection.

“We are honored to see Elijah Craig’s first-ever Barrel Proof Rye recognized at the highest level,” said Max Stefka, AVP Global Whiskey Brands for Heaven Hill. “To be chosen as Whisky of the Year is a proud milestone for our entire team and we thank Whisky Advocate for the recognition and the value they provide to all whiskey fans.”

Batch A925 marks the beginning of a new chapter for Elijah Craig’s Barrel Proof lineup and further expands the brand’s commitment to offering whiskeys in their purest, most distinctive form. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye is available nationwide in 750 ml bottles with a suggested retail price of $74.99.

ABOUT ELIJAH CRAIG BOURBON: Elijah Craig Bourbon bears the name of the Reverend Elijah Craig, known as “The Father of Bourbon,” who established his distillery in 1789 on the banks of Elkhorn Creek in modern day Georgetown, Kentucky. He is credited with being the first distiller to age his wares in charred oak barrels. The clear, unaged corn liquor became transformed into a bold amber liquid with a distinctively smooth flavor that makes Bourbon what it is today. Produced by Heaven Hill Distillery, the family of whiskeys includes Elijah Craig Small Batch, Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Bourbon, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and Elijah Craig Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. First brought to market in 1986, Heaven Hill Distillery’s Master Distillers were selecting a small number of barrels of the finest Bourbon to make Elijah Craig Small Batch long before the term “small batch” even existed. It is this attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that give Elijah Craig an ideal balance of age, robust body, and rich flavor. Elijah Craig accolades have included Whisky Advocate’s Whisky of the Year, Best Small Batch Bourbon, Best Single Barrel Bourbon (aged 11+ years) and Best Straight Bourbon at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and Excellent Highly Recommended honors at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. Introducing Chivas Regal Crystalgold: The Game-Changing Innovation That Redefines Tradition

London UK – Luxury Scotch whisky brand, Chivas Regal today announces the global launch of its groundbreaking spirit innovation, Chivas Regal Crystalgold – defying what you think you know about its world-renowned range.

Crafted from a bespoke blend and refined through a pioneering filtration process, Chivas Regal Crystalgold showcases technical excellence, delivering remarkable smoothness and transparency while preserving the depth of character and craft associated with the Chivas Regal brand signature style.

Pairing the mixability and versatility of a clear spirit with the depth of flavour and craftsmanship of a dark, oak-aged spirit, Chivas Regal Crystalgold offers an elevated alternative to traditional clear spirits, perfect for those sundowner moments that call for something fresher and more sophisticated in taste. Where clarity, versatility and craft converge in one groundbreaking spirit, it can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail for a truly distinctive, ultra-smooth drinking experience.

“We’ve always believed that innovation should enhance tradition, not erase it and Chivas Regal Crystalgold is the epitome of that. It pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in blending,” said Sandy Hyslop, Master Blender, Chivas Regal. “Through years of experimentation, we have perfected a filtration process that removes colour while retaining flavour for a truly unique drinking experience. Our goal with Chivas Regal Crystalgold wasn’t just to innovate, it was to preserve everything people love about an oak-aged spirit, while presenting it in a way you’ve never seen from us before. The clarity is striking, but the flavour is unmistakably ours.”

At the heart of this launch is Chivas Regal Global Brand Ambassador and F1 driver, Charles Leclerc, whose innovative mindset and pursuit of excellence mirror the ethos behind Chivas Regal Crystalgold. Known for his precision across all disciplines, including his off-track passion for chess, Leclerc embodies the ability to stay multiple moves ahead – a quality that also defines the meticulous art of spirit blending and innovation. Just as Chivas Regal Crystalgold offers a fresh perspective on tradition, Leclerc brings a sharp, modern lens to a world shaped by legacy and precision.

“Since partnering with Chivas Regal, I’ve been inspired by its unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and ability to balance heritage with innovation,” said Charles Leclerc, Global Brand Ambassador, Chivas Regal. “That philosophy deeply resonates with me – it mirrors the way I approach both my career and off-track passions, like chess, where strategy and precision are everything. Chivas Regal Crystalgold is the embodiment of that spirit. It’s about pushing boundaries while staying true to your roots.”

To celebrate the launch of this groundbreaking innovation, Charles Leclerc and Chivas Regal have together created the ‘Leclerc Spritz.’ Comprising of a blend of citrus, elderflower and mint, elevated with champagne and Chivas Regal Crystalgold – it’s a modern twist on a timeless favourite, a bold innovation just like Chivas Regal Crystalgold itself.

“With 75%* of consumers seeking spirits suited to afternoon-to-evening occasions, Chivas Regal Crystalgold meets a growing demand for spirits that are lighter and more versatile, while filling a unique space in our brand portfolio,” said Nick Blacknell, Marketing Director, Chivas Regal. “We’ve created a product that allows for both existing, and new generations of drinkers to experience a new type of spirit made by Chivas Regal. It’s a breakthrough in filtration and taste, but more than that, it’s a statement of who we are: bold, strategic, and ahead of the curve.”

Chivas Regal Crystalgold will be available for purchase from October 2025, at an RRP of £51, from a range of retailers including Amazon, with its official debut taking place ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix on 30th September.
