Whisky’s fragrant bouquet celebrated in wondrously floral limited-edition

— Azuma Makoto reimagines Glenmorangie 18 Years Old through language of flowers —

Dancing with jasmine, geranium and narcissus, Glenmorangie 18 Years Old’s fragrant bouquet has inspired a unique collaboration with botanical sculptor Azuma Makoto. Comparing the rare Highland single malt Scotch whisky’s luscious, floral notes to a flower in bloom, Azuma Makoto celebrates its unfolding radiance in a stunning limited-edition design, showcasing his masterpiece Dancing Flowers of Glenmorangie, premiering at Chelsea’s Saatchi Gallery’s upcoming Late openings, from 6-9pm, on Thursdays September 23 and 30. This moving sculpture, featuring almost 100 different blooms, reimagines the whisky through the language of flowers.

When he first tasted Glenmorangie 18 Years Old, Azuma Makoto was struck by how the whisky’s floral notes danced on the tongue. Delighting in its notes of honeysuckle, sweet pea, jasmine and geranium entwined with dried fruits and honey, he decided to translate the single malt’s flavours into flowers. First sketching his ideas, Azuma Makoto then created a floral artwork in his studio, in Tokyo, Japan. Comprising almost 100 blooms, it includes those he scented in the whisky, Scottish blooms and flowers from the many countries where Glenmorangie is enjoyed. Azuma Makoto then drifted petals, confetti-like, over the work as it was photographed and filmed. His sculpture, Dancing Flowers of Glenmorangie, is showcased on the whisky’s giftbox and labels.

The presentation of Azuma Makoto’s sculpture at the ‘Whisky in Full Bloom‘ Bar at Saatchi Gallery follows the partnership with the leading contemporary art platform and the support of its upcoming major exhibition RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show 2021 opening September 18 – October 3, 2021. Glenmorangie 18 Years Old is one of Glenmorangie’s most delicious single malts, enjoyed by whisky lovers old and new. Dreamed up by its endlessly imaginative whisky creators, Glenmorangie 18 Years Old begins with their delicate, fruity spirit, crafted in stills as tall as a giraffe to allow more space for taste and aroma. Next they age this spirit in bourbon casks for 15 years, then transfer a portion into Oloroso sherry casks for three more years. After 18 years, these casks are reunited to create the single malt whisky’s dazzling, luminous tastes.

Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, said: “Azuma Makoto’s stunning work deliciously translates the sweet, floral lushness of Glenmorangie 18 Years Old. A mere glimpse of his limited-edition design brings to mind the whisky’s scents of geranium, tuberose and jasmine, and tastes of honeysuckle and sweet pea, figs and nuts. Since it looks as wonderful as it tastes, this limited edition is sure to delight whisky lovers old and new.”

Azuma Makoto said: “When I first tasted Glenmorangie 18 Years Old, each sip of the whisky unfurled as if it was a flower in bloom. I could taste so many blossoms dancing on my tongue, that I was inspired to reimagine the whisky in Dancing Flowers of Glenmorangie. I hope that through this limited-edition design, my work brings as much joy as the delicious tastes which inspired it.”

Glenmorangie 18 Years Old’s limited edition Azuma Makoto design will be available from 1st November at Clos19.com, whisky specialists and Amazon. Register your interest now on Clos19.com, RRP: £100.

Whisky lovers are invited to try the limited-edition Glenmorangie 18 Years Old at the Azuma ‘Whisky in Full Bloom’ Bar at Saatchi Gallery during the upcoming Saatchi Lates on September 23rd and September 30th from 6PM-9PM. Tickets are available on www.saatchigallery.com/tickets

About Glenmorangie:

Glenmorangie’s whisky makers use endless imagination and five key ingredients – wood, water, barley, yeast and time – to dream up delicious single malt whiskies. They’ve been honing their craft for more than 175 years. They create a delicate and fruity spirit in stills as tall as an adult giraffe to allow for more taste and aroma. Led by Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden, this crackerjack crew are on a mission to bring new flavours and possibilities to the world of single malt.

Glenmorangie celebrates the joy of delicious single malt in every part of its universe, from Glenmorangie House to its colourful new brand campaign, shot by famed photographer Miles Aldridge. With its tagline “It’s kind of delicious and wonderful”, Glenmorangie invites whisky lovers old and new to see themselves in Glenmorangie’s world.

About Dr Bill Lumsden:

Dr Bill Lumsden’s favourite phrase is “What if?”. And throughout more than 25 years with Glenmorangie, the Distillery’s Creative Director has challenged himself and his team to take whatever captures their imaginations and turn it into whisky – be that the spirit and flavour of Glenmorangie’s homeland (the Cadboll Estate series), the magic of a cake moment (Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake), a cup of coffee (Glenmorangie Signet), and more. With a PhD in biochemistry and decades of experience, Dr Bill has all the skills needed to bring these ideas to life. Already, he has earned the admiration of his peers many times over. He features in the Icons of Whisky Hall of Fame. He has won the International Whisky Competition’s award for Master Distiller of the Year more times than anyone else. And he was named twice Master Blender/Distiller of the Year by the International Spirits Challenge.

About Azuma Makoto

Azuma Makoto began his floral art after setting up a haute-couture flower shop in 2002. A few years later, he began to explore the world of botanical sculpture – and soon his work began attracting attention from around the world. Starting with a solo exhibition in New York, he has exhibited experimental works in Paris and Dusseldorf, and in 2009 he launched the experimental plant group Toshin, Flower Tree Research Institute (AMKK) in Milan, Belgium and Shanghai. In recent years, he has been pursuing projects that take flowers to locations impossible in the natural world. For instance, he has plunged floral art more than 1,000m deep below the sea and launched it high into the atmosphere.

About Saatchi Gallery

Since 1985, Saatchi Gallery has provided an innovative platform for contemporary art. Exhibitions have presented works by largely unseen young artists, or by international artists whose work has been rarely or never exhibited in the UK. This approach has made the Gallery one of the most recognised names in contemporary art. Since moving to its current 70,000 square feet space in the Duke of York’s Headquarters in Chelsea, London, the Gallery has welcomed over 10 million visitors. The Gallery hosts over 5,000 schools visits annually and has over 6 million followers on social media. In 2019 Saatchi Gallery became a charity, beginning a new chapter in its history. www.saatchigallery.com

About the collaboration:

Glenmorangie’s partnership with Azuma Makoto began after the Japanese botanical sculptor tasted Glenmorangie 18 Years Old with Dr Bill Lumsden and discovered its wondrously floral palate. Inspired to create an artwork from his perception of the whisky, he drew on the whisky’s floral notes, and conducted his own research into flowers native to Scotland, bringing them together with blooms from parts of the world where Glenmorangie is enjoyed. Once Azuma Makoto had created his botanical artwork, he allowed petals to drift over it while it was photographed and filmed, creating the moving sculpture Dancing Flowers of Glenmorangie. The work reflects his delight in finding that the whisky’s floral notes dance on the tongue. The finished work is showcased on the gift box and labels of this limited-edition bottle. A print of the work is included within the gift box.

Responsible Drinking:

The Glenmorangie Company advocates responsible drinking and suggests that drinkers savour Glenmorangie whiskies in moderation and in line with recommended daily guidelines for alcohol consumption.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Warns Fans Of Potential Online Scams

Buffalo Trace Distillery Warns Fans

Of Potential Online Scams

Online Sites Taking Money, No Bourbon in Return

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Sept. 16, 2021) Buffalo Trace Distillery is warning fans of an increasing number of consumer frauds that are making their way across social media and the internet.

Several disappointed fans have contacted the Distillery letting them know they ordered some of Buffalo Trace’s premium whiskies online from various sites, were charged for the transaction, and then received nothing, or in some cases empty bourbon bottles, many of which were counterfeit and included plastic toppers on the bottle instead of the metal toppers used on legitimate bottles.  Although various brands from Buffalo Trace’s portfolio have been targeted, its Blanton’s and Double Eagle Very Rare Bourbons are being attacked particularly hard by these scam artists.

Many fans see ads on social media promising them Buffalo Trace Distillery whiskeys at low prices, but are disappointed when nothing arrives, or the bottles are empty and not legitimate. “We’ve had fans from across the U.S. contact us to tell us they’ve been duped.  We’ve taken legal action to have the sites shut down and also sent notices to the social media companies asking them to take action, but unfortunately the situation persists,” said Mary Tortorice, general counsel, Sazerac Company.  “In all but six states plus the district of Columbia, it is illegal to ship alcohol directly to consumers,” continued Tortorice.  “One of the tip offs is if the website will process your order with shipment to your state, if you are located in one of the 44 states where shipping alcohol directly to your home is illegal.  Another red flag is if the website is located in another country, as the majority of the scams we have seen have been located overseas.”  Tortorice also warns of prices that seem too low, the old adage of “if it looks too good to be true, it probably is,” applies here.  The sale of counterfeit alcohol, which claims the lives of thousands of people a year, has long been a global problem and is now becoming a problem in the United States as the market deregulates the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Fans are advised Buffalo Trace Distillery does not sell its whiskies online, and to check out any site very carefully for its legitimacy if it is legal to receive distilled spirits in your state.  If you feel you have been duped, you can report the site to the Better Business Bureau, your State Attorneys General office and contact your credit card company about its fraud protection policies.

We caught up with Laura Sharp to hear more about the opening of Cardhu’s Brand Home – Scotch Whisky News

We caught up with Laura Sharp to hear more about the opening of Cardhu’s Brand Home.

Laura Sharp, Regional Brand Home Manager, tells us about her role with Diageo and the recent opening of Cardhu’s Brand Home.

Tell us more about your current role at Diageo? What has your journey been like to get to this role?

I am currently the Regional Brand Home Manager East, this involves the running of Cardhu, Cragganmore and Royal Lochnagar Distillery Visitor Centres. I moved into this role in January and prior to that I was the Brand Home Manager for Cardhu and Cragganmore since April 2009. I started my career in the whisky industry in 1996 when I worked with Diageo but not directly employed by them – this was as a breakfast waitress at Drummuir Castle. I was employed by Diageo in October 2000 whilst working in the Heritage Visits team (currently known as the BEST Team) which involved arranging visits to Scotland for Diageo’s invited corporate guests.

I am celebrating 21 years with Diageo this October but have been involved in the industry for 25 years. Prior to my Brand Home role, I was privileged enough to have worked on Project Triumph which was the building of Roseisle Distillery. At the time it was the first distillery built by Diageo in 30 years. I was employed as the administrator for the project but the role provided an amazing opportunity to learn a completely different side of the business and to be involved with such a huge iconic project. With hard work, determination, a desire to learn, develop and grow I am proud of how far I have come and so proud to have a leadership role in our business.

What is the most exciting part of your role as Regional Brand Home Manager?

The most exciting part of my role is being able to directly engage with our consumers and being able to continually innovate how we do this in the best way we can to share our fantastic brands. Looking after three very different brands and sites means I don’t do the same thing for each brand; therefore, my role is exciting and comes with many opportunities, something which I thrive on. There are not many parts of the business where you can talk directly to our consumers and can engage with them and instantly create an ambassador for our brands and impact business performance.

Diageo have recently opened the Cardhu brand home – tell us more about this and what this means for Diageo?

This is a fantastic new experience in the heart of whisky country. It’s great to have this in Speyside as we are telling not only our brand but our production story in a different way to how we did before. We have such a unique story and it is great to have a dedicated experience that tells it in the way it deserves. It not only tells the Cardhu story but brings the close connection to Johnnie Walker to the forefront of our visitors minds and showcases Johnnie Walker’s deep Scottish history in its home country.

It is an opportunity to reach our consumers and inspire them to share our story, something which in turn will benefit Diageo across the globe.

Tell us about your involvement in the opening and what it has been like behind the scenes?

I have been involved with the project since it was announced and we started with the first charette at Cardhu 2019. I am so grateful to have been able to have had the opportunity to be involved from the early stages all the way through to opening for visitors. Throughout the entire process I have been able to give my ideas and thoughts to help shape the visitor experience which was great.

Behind the scenes it was very busy but fun and incredibly rewarding. There was lots to think about and deliver out with the customer journey and experience. This includes community engagement, health and safety requirements, recruitment, compliance, training and also considering the cross over into the production and distillery area. There was also a lot of filming and media visits leading up to opening so we needed to ensure they got the best possible experience to guarantee we captured the best content to really showcase the visitor experience when we opened to the public.

I am very proud of what I have achieved with the new Brand Home and I have learnt that if you believe in what you are doing, love what you are doing and remain focused on the end goal, then no matter what challenges you face you will achieve it.

The Dalmore Decades will be offered in a dedicated 1-lot auction in Hong Kong on 8 October 2021, with an estimate in excess of HK$4,000,000 / US$500,000 / £350,000, as part of Sotheby’s Hong Kong autumn sales series.  A percentage of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to V&A Dundee, following The Dalmore’s announcement in 2020 of a four-year partnership with Scotland’s first design museum and the first Victoria & Albert museum to open outside of London.* This long-term commitment will allow V&A Dundee and The Dalmore to nurture and champion Scottish culture and creative talent on a global stage.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Spirits Specialist, said: “We are thrilled to partner with The Dalmore Distillery once again, to auction the exclusive six-bottle Decades Collection in Hong Kong. This new release encapsulates everything that The Dalmore is so well known for, from the quality of its liquid, to its ability to age and, of course, its exquisite presentation. Our offering presents a one-time only opportunity to acquire the complete set – including the inimitable 1951 vintage – making this unmissable for any dedicated collector of whisky.”

Richard Paterson, The Dalmore’s Master Distiller, said: “Over the past 50 years, I have kept a watchful eye over our superlative inventory of rare whiskies, giving them the guidance to mature and reach their full potential in the finest casks sourced from around the world. Each bottle marks a very special milestone in the brand’s history and has a unique story to tell, which I hope the lucky collector will enjoy with those closest to them. This collection is a memento of our 180-year history in the making. We are proud to share the pinnacle of six decades of whisky making, the result of potential earned and honed over time.”

Paul Wong, Head of Sotheby’s Wine & Spirits Auction, Asia, said: “We are seeing strong demand for top whisky in Asia and no doubt this one-of-a kind collection from a 180-year-old iconic distillery will cause great excitement amongst collectors.”

The one of one, six bottle collection

The Dalmore Decades 1951 60 Year Old – Bottled in 2011

One of the oldest single malt whiskies ever to have been released by The Dalmore, this single malt was distilled and placed into casks under the watchful eye of Colonel Hector ‘HAC’ Mackenzie, who took over management of the distillery from his father in April 1946. It was matured in twin sherry casks that were the last remnants from the Mackenzie era, brought together after spending 60 years side by side.

The Dalmore Decades 1967 53 Year Old – Bottled in 2020

The 1960s was a transformational decade for the distillery, with 1967 a landmark year, when the number of stills was increased from four to eight – expanding The Dalmore’s whisky-making potential. Their expert orchestration was a vital component in the composition of the final spirit which completed its maturation process in a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine barrique from Château Mont-Redon.

The Dalmore Decades 1979 40 Year Old – Bottled in 2020

The 1970s paved the way for a number of exceptional milestones in the history of The Dalmore distillery, not least the arrival in 1970 of Richard Paterson who would work with the Mackenzie family to unlock the secrets of The Dalmore and the maturation process. This single malt ended its maturation journey in an exceptionally rare Graham’s Port Pipe Vintage 1952 – a year of post-war austerity when only tiny quantities of vintage Port were made.

The Dalmore Decades 1980 40 Year Old – Bottled in 2020

In a demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit, the maturation journey for this whisky was spun on its head: instead of providing only a foundation, the ex-Bourbon cask used in the first maturation process was also used as a finish for more than five years, before bottling.

The Dalmore Decades 1995 25 Year Old – Bottled in 2020

The iconic ‘bell shaped’ Dalmore bottle was first introduced in 1994, its sinuous curves echoing the shape of the stills through which the distillery’s spirit runs. It provided the ideal frame for a more prominent Royal Stag. During this decade, Richard Paterson would lay down a succession of casks from sherry bodegas in Spain and Portugal, and some of the world’s great wineries in France and California. Aged initially in ex-Bourbon casks, this whisky was then transferred into a Graham’s vintage Port Pipe from 1994 before spending more than five years in a barrique used to mature Tintilla de Rota, sweet fortified wine from southern Spain.

The Dalmore Decades 2000 20 Year Old – Bottled in 2020

The Dalmore distillery was the first distillery in Scotland to run off the “New Spirit” at 12.02am on Saturday, 1st January 2000. In a radical departure from the distillery’s practice, the 2000 has spent all 20 years of its life maturing in a Matusalem sherry butt, as opposed to an initial period in ex-Bourbon casks.

On 16 September, The Dalmore and V&A Dundee unveiled their commission of a short film celebrating the first realisation of their four-year partnership. Kengo Kuma, architect of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games National Stadium and V&A Dundee, features alongside Richard Paterson, The Dalmore’s Master Distiller, in Decades in the Making. Framed by a collage of evocative archive images and a bespoke commissioned soundtrack, the six-minute film by Scottish film-makers STROMA Films explores creative inspiration and the development of potential over time, coinciding with seminal career moments for both masters in their respective fields.

Caskshare Launches New Signature Series in collaboration with Mark Reynier – Scotch Whisky News

Caskshare Launches New Signature Series in collaboration with Mark Reynier

Online cask spirit platform Caskshare is set to launch its new Signature Series, an extended collaboration with prominent industry figures and cask owners, which enables privately owned casks to be shared and sold amongst a community of fellow whisky lovers.

Caskshare is delighted to be partnering with whisky maverick, Mark Reynier, to launch this new element of their industry leading platform. The casks listed as part of this series are Reynier’s rare and exclusive laddie selection. Reynier’s passion for innovation led to the development of Additional Cask Enhancement, and these casks demonstrate the remarkable results that can be achieved by the application of this process.

To maximise balance and harmony, Reynier undertook a complex operation pooling three casks, two Bourbon and one Oloroso cask matured whiskies, one from 2008 and two from 2010 through a journey of maturation to August 2018. Then the three casks (two years) were vatted together and filled back into Andean, Amarone (French oak) and Oloroso wood for a further 18 months. They were then revatted again, and the whole was filled into a first-fill American barrel (Cask R190410003), a Virgin American barrel (Cask R190410002), and a first-fill Oloroso hogshead (Cask R190410001).

The older 2008 cask is subsumed into the 2010’s making 2010 the AYS relevant year. Each will have the same complex flavour profile, and will be bottled in consecutive years showing more age and further cask emphasis throughout the series.

These are experimental bottlings exploring oak influences and incorporate new oak from the Andes (Quercus Humboldtii), which is an oak high in eucalyptoides. Reynier through this partnership with Caskshare is giving like-minded whisky lovers the chance to share this experience with him.

The casks will be bottled starting in March 2022 and present a chance to experience a totally unique triple racked journey in oak. They are available to reserve now on Caskshare website.

“What we have here are what some might say are the extreme end of whisky making, and represent my journey in finding true individuality in the whisky industry. Working with Caskshare has given me the chance to let others experience my journey through the years, and to hold a share of this maturing whisky alongside me.”
Mark Reynier

For too long there has been a confusion about what happens to privately owned casks when they are ready to be enjoyed. Owners have a dilemma as to whether to sell the cask to the original producer, brokers or independent bottlers; which can only be done as a sealed cask; or to bottle the whole cask, which results in a large amount of whisky, more than anyone would ever need. Caskshare Signature Series is the solution to that conundrum in a way that allows cask owners to enjoy some of their own whisky, bottled at a time that suits them, and to share the remainder with fellow whisky lovers.

“Mark has been a leading light in the whisky industry for over two decades and we are delighted to be working with him to bring these casks, innovative techniques and experimental bottlings to market. Caskshare Signature Series provides a groundbreaking solution, assisting cask owners with the best option for the final phase of cask ownership – the bottling, sharing and enjoying.”
