Award-winning whisky Glen Scotia unveils bold new look as it heralds a new era for the brand – Scotch Whisky News

Award-winning whisky Glen Scotia unveils bold new look as it heralds
a new era for the brand

Campbeltown distillery, Glen Scotia, has unveiled a series of striking new bottle and packaging designs, as it continues to underline its ambition of being one of the most recognised and sought-after scotch whiskies in the world.

The multi-award-winning brand is renowned for its superior whisky-production capabilities. Earlier this year, it released its oldest and rarest expression to date, an exceptional 46-year-old that spotlighted the outstanding artistry of the distillery team.

Glen Scotia’s 25-year-old was awarded ‘Best in Class’ and therefore the ‘Best Whisky in The World’ at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021, and late last year it was also crowned Scottish Distillery of the Year at the Scottish Whisky Awards. It is the first time any distillery has won both, let alone in the same year.

To celebrate these significant achievements and affirm its ongoing ambitious growth plans, Glen Scotia’s full core range packaging has been redesigned, as well as the introduction of a new bottle design for its standard and premium ranges, reinforcing the brand’s premiumisation and shelf stand out.

Bolder shades of gold, deep aqua and emerald green on the primary and secondary packaging, depicting the colours of Campbeltown’s seafaring roots and leafy coastlines, pay homage to the distillery, the region and its signature style.

With a history dating back to 1832, the refresh is also a further opportunity for consumers to unpack Glen Scotia’s history in the town once known as the ‘Victorian whisky capital of the world’. Each expression will be wrapped in luxury labelling detailing icons of heritage, master distiller notes, and each expression’s unique place in the prized portfolio.

The updated designs represent a significant investment for the business as it looks to further drive sales and recruit more consumers from around the world to experience the exceptional whisky making craftsmanship of Campbeltown.

In the 18th century, Campbeltown was home to over 30 distilleries yet today, Glen Scotia is one of only three enduring distilleries in the beautiful coastal region. Through a programme of continued investment and local effort, the distillery has gained deserved international attention, allowing the potential of the town to be realised once again.

Colin Matthews, CEO of The Loch Lomond Group, Glen Scotia’s parent company, said: “Glen Scotia has forever held a special place in Scotland’s west coast, but in recent years, thanks to the commitment of our team and significant investment in our distillery, the brand has grown exponentially.

“The Glen Scotia distillery is at the forefront of Campbeltown’s renaissance – showcasing the town’s rich whisky heritage, guiding the way for others to follow, and now putting the town and Glen Scotia back to the very centre of attention on the world’s whisky map. It has been made possible by our team’s knowledge, dedication, craftsmanship and determination, and we are very excited to take this stunning new packaging to the world.

“We are the only distillery in the world to have achieved both the highest accolade at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and be crowned Scottish Distillery of the Year, an incredibly proud achievement for us all and even more special that it was all accomplished within the same 12 months. It is a feat only possible for the very best, but we continue to show our enthusiasm and ambition for Glen Scotia and Campbeltown to grow further with the release of this beautiful new packaging.

“We continue to be determined to share Glen Scotia’s thought-provoking heritage and mark its place as one of Scotland’s most impressive and creative whisky distilleries. The whisky industry can be a crowded place, but we are confident this latest move to further enhance the brand will positively spotlight Glen Scotia Whisky for years to come.”

HARDIN’S CREEK from the James B. Beam Distilling Co., a new brand of innovative, limited-edition whiskeys rooted in the Beam family legacy – American Whiskey News

JAMES B. BEAM DISTILLING COMPANY INTRODUCES HARDIN’S CREEK™, A NEW SERIES OF UNIQUE AND RARE, LIMITED-EDITION WHISKEYS ROOTED IN THE BEAM FAMILY LEGACY

Hardin’s Creek™ Launches Jacob’s Well™ and Colonel James B. Beam™, an Exclusive Collection from Freddie Noe, Newly Appointed Master Distiller of the Fred B. Noe Distillery

Clermont, Kentucky (June 01, 2022) – Today, the James B. Beam Distilling Company (JBBDCo) celebrates the launch of Hardin’s Creek™, a new brand that will chart the ongoing story of the Beam family legacy, one that is more than 227 years in the making, through highly limited and rare releases. Hardin’s Creek is the next generation of boundary-pushing, premium American Whiskey inspired by the expertise of seven generations of Beam Master Distillers.

Hardin’s Creek is an ongoing series of annual releases, featuring some of James B. Beam Distilling Co.’s rarest and most unique liquids and grounded in the rich experience and distilling expertise of James B. Beam Distilling Co. Each set of releases will showcase the breadth and depth of the James B. Beam Distilling Co’s whiskey-making credentials inclusive of age, blending, mash bill, distillation, barrels, rackhouse locations, and more. This year’s inaugural Hardin’s Creek series will launch with two expressions: Jacob’s Well™ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, a thoughtful blend of two ultra-aged bourbons, and Colonel James B. Beam™ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, a carefully crafted young whiskey.

“We couldn’t be more excited to launch Hardin’s Creek, particularly after the refresh of the James B. Beam Distillery and the opening of the Fred B. Noe Distillery. This has been a long time in the making, and I can’t wait to share it with the world,” said Freddie Noe, the newly appointed Master Distiller of the Fred B. Noe Distillery. “Every detail, from the blending techniques to the labels, draws inspiration from centuries of our family’s history, paying homage to our heritage while looking towards our future.”

The Fred B. Noe Distillery was thoughtfully named after seventh-generation Master Distiller Fred Noe, with the intent of producing new-to-world innovative products as part of the next generation of whiskey such as Little Book® and Booker’s®. On May 12, 2022, Freddie Noe was officially named the Master Distiller of the Fred B. Noe Distillery, announced by his father Master Distiller Fred Noe. This is significant as it is the first time in Beam history that there are two family members, working alongside one another, sharing the Master Distiller title at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. homestead in Clermont, KY.

Today the Beam name is synonymous with bourbon, and that all started with Johannes Jacob Beam, the forefather of America’s first family of bourbon. In 1795, Jacob Beam set down roots in the foothills of Western Kentucky. He started with a sturdy but humble well to draw water from a nearby creek. That water powered a mill – the mill to grind fields of corn – which formed Jacob Beam’s earliest mashes. That creek – Hardin’s Creek – became the first source of his family’s enduring legacy.

For real-time information about Hardin’s Creek, we encourage consumers to follow along on Instagram @HardinsCreek. Both limited-edition expressions will be available at retail and in bars and restaurants in the United States beginning July 2022.

HARDIN’S CREEK JACOB’S WELL KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY

Jacob’s Well is a thoughtful blend of two ultra-aged expressions: one 16-year-old traditional bourbon and one 15-year-old high-rye bourbon blended to achieve a depth of flavor unlike any other in Beam history. This edition pays tribute to the first family distiller, Jacob Beam, and the well he built in 1795. What first served as a water source would later represent a legacy built from one generation to the next as the inspiration behind this premiere, limited-edition bourbon. Freddie Noe distilled it using precious barrels laid down years ago by other hands, which he then intuitively hand-selected, blending together centuries of expertise with a vision for the future. Old whiskeys passing through new hands – on to yours.

“Jacob’s Well is some of the best bourbon coming out of this distillery,” shared Freddie Noe.

JACOB’S WELL | 54% ABV | Suggested Retail Price: $149.99

COLOR Rich amber with burgundy highlights

NOSE    Sweet vanilla and caramel paired with hints of rich oak

PALATE Oak and char married with stone fruits

FINISH  Smooth with lingering notes of vanilla and brown sweets

HARDIN’S CREEK COLONEL JAMES B. BEAM KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY

The repeal of Prohibition ushered in a new age of opportunity and Colonel James B. Beam was quick to seize the moment. Setting out to rebuild what had been lost and build upon it further. It took just 120 days for Colonel James B. Beam, also known as Jim Beam, to get Clermont Distillery up and running again – proof that quality is not necessarily a function of time. In honor of the Colonel’s legacy, Colonel James B. Beam was crafted. The limited-edition, two-year-old whiskey achieves a depth of flavor usually reserved for more mature bourbons by taking it off the still at a lower distillation proof, imparting more flavor from the fermentation process and letting the barrel’s characteristics shine through at a younger age. In making this whiskey, Freddie Noe was inspired by the style of bourbon the Colonel was making on day 121: low distillation proof for a fuller flavor, guaranteeing the rich complexity of the young whiskey stays intact.

“Colonel James B. Beam is made to change the perception of what a bourbon is and can be,” shared Freddie Noe.

COLONEL JAMES B. BEAM | 54% ABV | Suggested Retail Price: $79.99

COLOR Amber gold

NOSE    Robust vanilla and caramel notes

PALATE Deep and complex flavors of vanilla, nuts, and oak

FINISH  Long and full finish

Jacob’s Well and Colonel James B. Beam are best enjoyed neat or served over a large ice cube in a lowball glass where their complex flavors can be appreciated with each sip. But, as Fred and Freddie Noe like to say, everyone should drink their whiskey however they like it best.

Attendance at the KDA’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® experiences continue their rapid rebound from COVID and closures, up 160% in total attendance from last year and just down slightly from the pre-pandemic record in 2019.

Jura Whisky Celebrates return of Fèis Ìle Festival with a Toast to the Community and the Launch of a New 2022 Distillery Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

Jura Whisky Celebrates return of Fèis Ìle Festival

with a Toast to the Community and the Launch of a New

2022 Distillery Exclusive

Mark Bruce, Jura Distillery Brand Home Manager in the Jura Cooperage Bar

Jura Single Malt whisky is celebrating the return of the popular Fèis Ìle festival with a very special community gathering and the launch of a limited-edition 14 Year Old Distillery Exclusive, crafted inside a specially selected cask waiting patiently in one of the island distillery’s warehouses.

The new whisky will be available from the 3rd June, the date that Jura Distillery marks its official day as part of the Fèis Ìle celebrations, which this year will see the whisky community at the distillery come together with islanders for a gathering.

The 2007 limited Jura Distillery release was matured in Cask No.1892, a hand-selected Sherry butt from Jerez in Southern Spain, for 14 years. Just 700 bottles will be available of this exquisite liquid which boasts a golden orange colour and a cask strength of 57.2% ABV.

Joe Ricketts, Lead Whisky Maker for Jura, explains: “The distillery team had earmarked this cask as a potential island exclusive and it was easy to see why. The fruity, aromatic qualities we’ve found around the 2007 vintage, combined with the rich, warming notes from its time in a single Sherry butt make for a compelling expression of Jura’s distinct character. Trying it with Mark and the team on the island, we quickly realised it would be the ideal candidate for 2022’s Fèis Ìle Distillery Cask, celebrating the return of this great festival.”

With an inviting nose expressing warm sweet spice, prunes soaked in Armagnac, crystal malt, dried peach, green banana and bitter orange, this 14 Year Old single cask malt delivers dried stone fruit and sweet citrus on the palate, together with notes of chocolate mint, medium roasted coffee and pistachio, before finishing with a lovely citrus blossom lift.

Mark Bruce adds: “We knew this was a special cask destined for great things. Our distillery team had shortlisted it as a potential future distillery exclusive and Joe agreed. We’ve worked harder than ever to ensure this celebratory bottling is ready for Jura Day, filling, wax dipping and completing every single bottle with hand-written labels all on island. A fitting tribute to the great community here.”

The 700 bottles will be available to purchase exclusively from the distillery visitor centre on the 3rd of June before the remaining allocation of bottles is made available for pre-sale to select international markets via the Jura Whisky website, with an RRP of £120.

There will be no tours or tastings in the distillery this year, however the visitor centre will be open to all and distillery staff look forward to greeting everyone keen to get their hands on a bottle of Jura 2022 Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive. Deer Island Rum, Jura Brewery, Lussa Gin and The Island Bakehouse will also be running activities throughout the day and, for the islanders themselves, along with anybody lucky enough to be staying overnight, there will be live music from Glaswegian sensation Trail West supported by local band Pete Smoke and the Roaches, from 8pm in the local community hall.

*FULLL TASTING NOTES

Cask No 108.58 ‘One Fancies a Sherry’

Age: 13 Years

ABV: 55.0%

Distilled Date: 4 August 2008

Flavour Profile: Deep, Rich & Dried Fruits

Speyside

Tasting notes:

On the nose we discovered “two sides of a coin”. One being dark chocolate cherry liqueurs while, flipping it over, there was a funky scent of roasted beetroot and goat cheese tart. Massive on the palate, a creamy spicy jalapeno jam next to toasted, flaked almonds and a coffee bitterness in the finish. Diluted, an apple and cinnamon turnover, prune juice and on the other side, mushroom pie and tar. While to taste, hoisin sauce, ginger cake and glace cherries. After 11 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky into a first fill barrique from a privately owned small bodegas, now in its 9th generation, that focuses exclusively on the Pedro Ximenez grape.

Belonging to the world’s most entertaining whisky club gives you access to exclusive experiences, a monthly members magazine Unfiltered, colourful tastings and events at the Society’s Members’ Rooms, partner bars as well as online – and of course, the finest selection of single cask whisky, bottled exclusively for members.

The Epicurean Pays Homage to City of Glasgow with Launch of New Cask Strength Glasgow Edition – Scotch Whisky News

The Epicurean Pays Homage to City of Glasgow with Launch of New Cask Strength Glasgow Edition

Award-winning Lowland Malt Scotch Whisky brand, The Epicurean, today reveals a new release dedicated to “his” home City of Glasgow – also home to independently family-owned parent company, Douglas Laing & Co. This limited-edition expression marries together the finest Single Cask Single Malts from the Lowland region of Scotland and is offered at a natural cask strength of 56.8% alcohol, proudly without colouring or chill-filtration. Strictly limited to just 3,000 bottles globally, this release is expected to be snapped up quickly.

Presented in a black bottle with gold foiling and packaged in a premium gift tube, the “striking” black and gold design was inspired by the 1920’s Art Deco visual arts era, the same era that inspired The Epicurean’s brand character – a true Glasgow gentleman. Tasting notes are said to reveal “fresh fruits with lashings of runny honey and sweet raspberry jam”, a dram the Douglas Laing team describe as a “spectacular melody of sweet flavours”.

To support the new release, the team behind the iconic Lowland Malt Scotch Whisky brand have partnered with local bar KONG to host an official launch event where invitees will get the chance to sample this new, limited edition bottling plus enjoy several Epicurean based cocktails.

Commenting on the special edition bottling, Cara Laing, Marketing Director, said:

“The Epicurean Glasgow Edition takes our hats off to the culturally unique city that we call home and perfectly encapsulates the ever-friendly, vibrant and energetic spirit of Glasgow. The exceptional liquid quality and premium packaging pay tribute to the values held by our Epicurious gent, who is ever the life and soul of the party and a connoisseur of fine food and drink.”

The Epicurean Glasgow Limited Edition will be available from specialist Whisky retailers around the world, plus online retailers, from May 2022. It carries a suggested retail price of £52.50 / €62.00.

Gordon and MacPhail congratulate Urquhart brothers on Jubilee Honour June 2022

Joint Honours for the Urquhart Brothers

Michael (L) and Ian (R)

Gordon & MacPhail has offered their warmest congratulations to two of their former Managing Directors who were both awarded CBEs in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Honours List this week.

Ian and Michael Urquhart, both third generation owners of the Elgin based Scotch whisky specialists were granted their honours for services to the Scotch Whisky Industry and to Charitable Work in Moray.

Ian, Managing Director of G&M from 1990 until 2007, having started in the business in 1967, said it was an honour and a pleasure to receive the award in her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee Year. He continued: “I have had the privilege to lead two successful family-owned Moray companies. They are two very different businesses – single malt Scotch whisky and Scottish cashmere – yet they share a commitment to producing the highest quality iconic products, now exported to over sixty markets throughout the world.  None of this would have been possible without the support of my family and the wonderful staff at both Johnstons of Elgin and Gordon & MacPhail who I have worked with over the last fifty years.”

Michael Urquhart added: “I am delighted to receive this honour in such a special year for Her Majesty. I like to think this is not mine alone but recognises the Urquhart family as a whole and our role in building a grocer’s shop in Elgin into a thriving business which exports around the world and is now the owner of two distilleries. Ian and I are only sorry our late brother David is not here to see the family honoured in this way.

“None of this, of course, would have been possible without the support and hard work of our wonderful staff at Gordon & MacPhail over the years. And of course, I also have to thank my wife Ailsa and our four children for putting up with my almost nonstop travelling over the years.”

Michael was Joint Managing Director, together with David Urquhart, from 2007 until 2012 when he became sole Managing Director until his retirement in 2014. A Chartered Accountant, he had initially joined the business in 1981 as Finance Director.

Both Ian and Michael continue to be active in local charities and in the wider business community. Ian remains a Deputy Lord Lieutenant and is also President of Johnston’s of Elgin. Michael is as busy as ever in the Scotch whisky industry, as Chairman of the Scottish Committee of the Worshipful Company of Distillers and is also a non-Executive Director at the National Theatre for Scotland and leads the Strategic Business Forum on the Moray Growth Deal.

Gordon & MacPhail was established in Elgin in 1895 and continues to be owned by members of the Urquhart family. The company owns Benromach Distillery in Forres and will its second distillery, The Cairn, is due to open later this year.
