ANNUAL CASK STRENGTH BOURBON RELEASE FROM A. SMITH BOWMAN IS BACK WITH AN EVEN HIGHER PROOF – American Whiskey News

ANNUAL CASK STRENGTH BOURBON RELEASE FROM A. SMITH BOWMAN IS BACK WITH AN EVEN HIGHER PROOF

Clocking in at 144.5 Proof, A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength Bourbon Batch #2 Features the Last of the Barrels Laid Down by Former Master Distiller Joe Dangler

FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA (December 6, 2022) – A. Smith Bowman Distillery, prior back-to-back “World’s Best Bourbon” winner at the World Whisky Awards, today unveils A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength Bourbon Batch #2. Aged a minimum of 10 years with barrels hand-selected by Master Distiller Brian Prewitt and Distiller David Bock, the annual cask strength offering is bottled uncut and non chill-filtered to offer fans the purest whiskey-drinking experience.

The second cask strength release from Virginia’s oldest distillery pushes the limits of high proof whiskey, coming in at 144.5 proof. Tasting notes describe this bourbon as starting with aromas of cherry and toast with a slight hint of leather and caramel. On the palate apple and cherry flavors show up first followed by vanilla and roasted nuts, striking a balance between soft sweet floral notes and strong wood char flavors. The finish is slick, quite peppery and crisp with an aftertaste that leaves your tastebuds bouncing with memory of the delightfully intense experience.

“A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength Bourbon Batch #2 is a high proof whiskey lover’s dream,” said Master Distiller Brian Prewitt. Distiller David Bock further elaborated on the second release of Cask Strength: “While last year’s inaugural Batch #1 boasted a more delicate profile that drank like a much lower proof bourbon (though it wasn’t!), this year’s offering really roars. Batch #1’s proof snuck up on you; Batch #2 slaps you in the char. Batch #2 also contains the last of the barrels Joe Dangler, former Master Distiller at A. Smith Bowman for over 30 years, laid down. We’re humbled to honor his lasting influence with this release.”

A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength Bourbon Batch #2 will be available in select markets in the United States beginning mid-December, as well through the A. Smith Bowman Distillery gift shop via online lottery. Bottles are packaged in 750 mL and available at a suggested retail pricing is $99.99.  For more information, please visit www.asmithbowman.com.

About A. Smith Bowman

A. Smith Bowman’s distilling roots date back to the years before Prohibition when the Bowman family had a granary and dairy farm in Sunset Hills, Virginia. They used excess grain from the family estate to distill spirits. In 1934, after the Repeal of Prohibition, Abram Smith Bowman and his sons continued the family tradition and built a more modern distillery in Fairfax County, Virginia called Sunset Hills Farm.  The Distillery was moved in 1988 and is now nestled in Spotsylvania County near the city of Fredericksburg, 60 miles away from the original location.

As a small and privately owned company, A. Smith Bowman Distillery continues the time-honored traditions on which it was founded. Considered a micro-distillery by today’s standards, A. Smith Bowman produces an assortment of hand-crafted spirits distilled from only the finest natural ingredients and using the latest technology. This micro-distillery focuses on the production of premium spirits honoring the legacy of Virginia’s first settlers. Its various brands have won more than 100 awards in the past five years, including “World’s Best Bourbon” in 2016 for its Abraham Bowman Port Finished Bourbon and again in 2017 for its John J. Grade II listed Restaurant Releases Single Cask Malt Whisky to Pair with Modern Indian Cuisine Introducing The Fire Station Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Grade II listed Restaurant Releases Single Cask Malt Whisky to Pair with Modern Indian Cuisine Introducing The Fire Station Whisky – a brand new, limited edition single cask malt whisky from newly opened restaurant Yaatra, situated within the beautiful Old Westminster Fire Station in London.

Chosen to pair perfectly with Indian cuisine, the heath of the Highlands crossed with the spice of the Silk Road, the Fire Station Whisky is distilled by independent and family-owned distillery Tullibardine. The cask was sourced and bottled by London based luxury asset managers, Hackstons.

Aged in a first fill ex-Jack Daniels cask, this light single malt has floral, sweet barley notes and understated hints of vanilla, with pear drops and a soft spice on the finish. Yaatra’s expert Head Mixologist Nick Smith worked alongside Hackstons in selecting the whisky to perfectly complement the modern Indian dishes on Yaatra’s menu.

“Whisky and Indian cuisine make a natural pairing, both of which are famous for their storied histories and deep spiced flavours. Not only that but India is the largest market for scotch on the planet, which is why it was the perfect opportunity to marry these two icons.” – Nick Smith, Head Mixologist, Yaatra.

Only 356 bottles of The Fire Station Whisky have been produced, making this a rare and special gift for the whisky lover in your life this Christmas, with select Hackstons premium clients receiving a gifted bottle. BENROMACH PARTNERS WITH PAPER ARTIST HELEN MUSSELWHITE FOR HANDMADE FESTIVE SCULPTURE – Scotch Whisky News

BENROMACH PARTNERS WITH PAPER ARTIST HELEN MUSSELWHITE FOR HANDMADE FESTIVE SCULPTURE

As part of its ‘Firsthand‘ campaign, Benormach single malt looks to celebrate all things handmade. Their new collaboration is with renowned paper artist Helen Musselwhite who has created a sculpture themed around the Speyside distillery and its whiskies.

Helen’s meticulous process began with a trip to Forres, Morayshire, to meet distillery manager Keith Cruickshank and experience the whisky making process first hand, taking inspiration from the award-winning flavour profile of the Benromach 15 Year Old single malt and the distillery’s traditional process.

The resulting 3D sculpture, which stands at almost 1m high, celebrates the values shared by Helen and the distillery – that the care, skill, passion and patience that go into a handmade approach can deliver extra special results.

Visitors will be able to see Helen’s work of art first hand, on display at the distillery’s visitor centre from January 2023. Window displays of the design can also be viewed at Jeffrey St Whiskies in Edinburgh, and at Amathus City and Amathus Shoreditch in London from 5th December.

The collaboration is part of Benromach’s Firsthand campaign, which brings people closer to makers worldwide who embody the passion and craft of handmade. Helen’s sculpture was created by a series of cuts, folds, scores and layers of various types of paper to create an intricate view of the distillery and its whiskies.

Keith Cruickshank, Benromach Distillery Manager, said: “It was wonderful to welcome Helen to the distillery and share our story and process, and explore areas where our worlds overlap. Both processes require a deep understanding of the layers, tools and complexities that go into creating something unique.

“The level of detail in Helen’s finished sculpture is remarkable. It’s a unique work of art guaranteed to intrigue and delight in equal measure. It’s the perfect illustration of the beauty of handmade things.”

Helen has honed her craft over 16 years and has worked with brands including Royal Mail, Molton Brown and Hoegaarden.

Helen Musselwhite said: “My visit to Speyside and the Benromach Distillery provided the ideal inspiration. I was struck by the age-old traditions employed in the whisky-making process and the passion and expertise of those who work there, The beautiful surroundings and aroma and taste of the whiskies also helped to shape my design.

“There are natural synergies between their craft and mine. Both take care, pay attention to detail and take time to make something worth waiting for – although my process is thankfully not quite as long! It took me around a month to make my paper sculpture, from initial sketches and a basic scale model through to the final piece. I got lost in the details which is always my favourite part, from the individual peppercorns to the roof tiles on the distillery roof.”

Visitors who purchase Benromach whisky at the distillery shop or website or at any of the retailers with window displays will receive a gift bag detailing Helen’s design, as well as a specially printed Christmas card.

For more information, visit the Benromach website.

About Benromach Distillery

Originally built in 1898, Benromach Distillery was brought back to life when the Urquhart family realised a lifelong dream to own a distillery in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five-year period before it was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Rothesay in 1998.

In reopening Benromach Distillery, the Urquhart family wanted to create a single malt whisky that has a classic Speyside character: beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke.

Benromach Distillery is located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres. A five-star visitor centre is open to the public throughout the year. Benromach Distillery is a member of the world-famous Malt Whisky Trail.

Diageo North America Honors US Military Troops on Veterans Day Through Annual Military Service Appreciation Day Event

Hundreds of Diageo employees across North America assemble care packages for military service men and women at its 7th annual care packing event

In commemoration of Veterans Day this year, Diageo North America hosted its seventh annual Military Service Appreciation Day event. Together, Diageo employees, non-profit organizations and community leaders designed and assemble care packages for US military troops serving overseas and at home. To further support and celebrate Crown Royal’s Purple Bag Project, Diageo employees located in New York, NY, Stamford, CT, Plainfield, IL, Relay, MD, Miami, FL, and Portland, OR packed the brand’s signature purple bags with personal care items, food essentials, and handwritten notes to extend a gesture of gratitude and generosity to our troops. For over a decade, Crown Royal has doubled down on its mission to ignite exceptional generosity within our communities by giving back to the people and places that support them. Through this initiative, the Purple Bag Project has supported over 1MM servicemen and women across the world.

The occasion also featured a virtual fireside chat with Claudia Schubert, President of Diageo North America and special guests Darrell K. Williams, President, Hampton University and Lt. “Every year, we honor our US military troops on Veterans Day through our annual Military Service Appreciation Day packing event. Operation Marambio – He Who Dares, Wins! – Argentine Whisky News

Operation Marambio – He Who Dares, Wins!

A military operation, a Lockheed C-130 Hercules, 5-year-old Argentinian whisky, the harsh Antarctica climate, one crazy idea, three collaborators and now years’ worth of patience, in 2022 a bold plan was hatched…

On 7/11/22, Nestor Serenelli secretly boarded a military Lockheed C-130 Hercules plane bound for Camp Marambio, a permanent, all-year-round Argentine station on the Antarctic continent.    Armed not with top-secret government files or military-grade equipment, Serenelli was transporting two barrels of his 5-year-old Argentine whisky.

What was supposed to be a routine flight to Antarctica turned out to be a more complicated affair…

The Flight of Nestor Serenelli

The exact departure date for Nestor’s flight was uncertain and on several occasions, his hopes were raised and then dashed as scheduled flights were cancelled due to severe weather conditions.  The month of October saw little whisky production at the La Alazana distillery, as Nestor was left in a perpetual state of limbo waiting for an opportune weather window.  The whisky was emptied into transportation kegs, to be later transferred back into casks in Antarctica, and transported along with all of the equipment required for the mission to Buenos Aires in advance.

Finally, the weather window appeared and Lila, Nestor’s wife and partner in La Alazana, dropped him at the airport where he made his way to the capital to board a C-130 Hercules for the first leg of the trip to Rio Gallegos, deep in Patagonia.  He spent the night there and crossed to Camp Marambio, Antarctica, the following day.  Operation Marambio now entered its most crucial stage and time was of the essence upon landing.

Nestor at the base

Up against the clock, Nestor was given a strict 4-hour window to move all casks and barrels off the plane, empty the kegs into the wooden casks, pack up and have everything back on board for departure or face being stranded for weeks, possibly months in Antarctica…

Thankfully, with the assistance and logistical help of the Argentine military who went above and beyond their call of duty, Nestor was saved from being marooned at the bottom of the world and the threat of becoming the Antarctic version of Chuck Noland was averted.

Nestor & the whisky

Nestor, along with the Argentine military, offloaded the casks from the plane, siphoned the whisky back out of the kegs into the casks and stored them safely for maturation on the southernmost continent.  Before leaving, Nestor stencilled onto one of the casks the Rosewin Holdings logo, snapped a few photos and took a moment to take in the gravity of the history-making achievement and his otherworldly surroundings.

Nestor reported that in all his life he has never seen such a place, claiming there are no words to describe such extreme beauty – one must go to feel it. A desolate, harsh, beautiful landscape.   Frost and ice all over the land and a never-ending wind. He saw Penguins but not much else.

The plan is to make this an annual occurrence in the hope that the Antarctic environment and terroir will create the final frontier of whisky flavours available on this earth.  There are talks and plans of maturing the next casks in an ice cabin on another base much closer to the south pole where the temperatures range between -40 and -5 with average winter wind speeds of over 100mph.

Daniel Monk & Nestor Serenelli

It is a miracle that Operation Marambio happened so quickly.  Daniel Monk arrived in Argentina to visit La Alazana on 22 March of this year.  His initial interest was in their casks of whisky. As they chatted, Daniel shared with them his dream of maturing whisky on the Antarctic continent, with the view to creating a 7 continents whisky series.  As the Sereneli’s eyes lit up they made a promise there and then that they would find a way, no matter the obstacles, to achieve this goal.  Within 8 months of the seed being planted and with the help of the Argentine Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces the Serenelis have achieved the impossible and Mr Monk’s dreams of maturing whisky on all 7 continents have been made a reality.

This is a true example of how collaborations and partnerships help each other grow, an example of Napoleon Hills’ ‘3rd mind’ concept.  How a harmony of power is created when a group of people come together with a definite purpose.  Whatever anybody’s dreams are right now we can all achieve them with action.  The Serenelis landed on their Marambio.  We can too.

The operation was the combined efforts and planning of Nestor and Lila Serenelli of La Alazana, Argentina’s first and only whisky distillery, Daniel Monk, founder and MD of Rosewin Holdings, an independent bottling company investing in premium new world whisky and current holders of the Guinness World Records largest bottle of whisky called ‘The Intrepid’, and the logistical support of the Argentine Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces.

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces 2022 Parker’s Heritage Collection Limited Edition Bottling – American Whiskey News

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces 2022 Parker’s Heritage Collection Limited Edition Bottling

16th edition of the annual ultra-premium release is made up of two different ages of Bourbons, one of which has been double barreled, and then masterfully blended together post aging.

BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Heaven Hill Distillery announced today the release of the 16th edition of the Parker’s Heritage Collection, featuring a Double Barreled Blend Bourbon. The 16th Edition of the Parker’s Heritage Collection is an allocated product and will be available nationally and internationally in limited quantities at the suggested retail price of $174.99. A portion of the proceeds will continue to support ALS research and patient care in honor of Parker Beam, Master Distiller Emeritus, with more than $1 million contributed across the Parker’s Heritage Collection since 2013.

This edition consists of 67% 13-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey that has been double barreled for four weeks and then blended post aging with 33% 15-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The 13-year-old Bourbon, from barrels produced in December 2008, was aged on the 5th-7th floors of Rickhouse Q and then re-barreled into new American white oak barrels with a level three char for four weeks. Then, it was later blended with 15-year-old Bourbon from barrels produced in January 2007 aged on the 2nd and 5th floors of Rickhouse II. The unique, bold flavor profile is balanced by the double barreled 13-year-old Bourbon, bringing out even more oak and spice notes from the barrel, with the 15-year-old Bourbon rounding out the older aged mouthfeel. At bottling, the liquid was uncut and non-chill filtered to preserve the complex flavors. This edition leads with an oak forward nose and hints of butterscotch and caramel, and once tasted is followed by a balance of spice notes, sweetness and slight oak tannins. The finish is long and warm with elements of dark chocolate, baking spices and white pepper. The mashbill for this edition is comprised of Heaven Hill Distillery’s traditional Bourbon mashbill 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley and ultimately bottled at barrel proof 132.2 or 66.1% alcohol by volume.

“The Parker’s Heritage Collection is a testament to the distilling legacy at Heaven Hill Distillery and the continued thirst for innovation which has driven generations of master distillers,” said Susan Wahl, Vice President, American Whiskey at Heaven Hill. “This Double Barreled Blend Bourbon is a masterful pairing of two uniquely aged products that create the perfect balance of flavors which, we believe, honor the past and are a fitting tribute to Parker and his legacy.”

The late Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam, for whom the acclaimed series is named, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2010. The past nine editions from 2013-2021, including the “Promise of Hope” Bourbon, the “Original Batch” Straight Wheat Whiskey, the Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey, the 24-Year-Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon, the 11-Year-Old Single Barrel, Orange Curaçao-finished Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Heavy Char Rye Whiskey, Heavy Char Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and the Heavy Char Wheat Whiskey respectively, have raised more than one million dollars toward ALS research and patient care through contributions made by Heaven Hill for each bottle purchased. With the 2022 Double Barreled Blend edition, Heaven Hill will again contribute a portion of the proceeds from each bottle sold to the ALS Association.

Packaged in the same upscale 750ml bottle as the previous fifteen editions, but with an eggplant-colored label, the newest Parker’s Heritage Collection is available in a three-bottle case and will arrive at retail locations starting in early December. With previous releases having won multiple awards from Whisky Advocate magazine, Whisky Magazine and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the series stands as some of the most critically lauded American Whiskeys in recent memory. Past bottlings have won awards ranging from “Best North American Whiskey” to “American Whiskey of the Year” to “Best of Show, Brown Spirits.”
