Greetings from Shelter Point!
We have been having a busy summer so far, hot on the heels of our 10 Year Old release, we are very excited that the next release of our Evans Family Reserve is now available in our store.
The Caribbean Rum Cask Finish is an absolute beauty. We have been finishing some of our single malt in casks from rum distilleries in Barbados and Martinique. The molasses based rum from Barbados brings a deep richness to the whisky which provides a delightful counterpoint to the light floral notes brought from the sugar cane based rum from Martinique. The combination of these in one bottle results in a spectacular malt.
Tasting Notes:
Honeyed with hints of pear and banana on the nose. The palate is sweet vanilla, caramelised sugar with apples and subtle oak tannins. Exceptionally smooth and well rounded the finish is full of butterscotch, toffee and ginger spice.
The Evans Family is available now in our retail store and online here.

The release of our 10 Year Old has been very successful. It seems that most of the BC Liquor Stores that received bottles sold out almost immediately, the stock that we have here in our retail store has almost sold out as well! A select group of liquor stores have been allocated some of this release as well. They will start to receive their allocations soon, once we know that these deliveries have been made we will provide you with a list.
Cocktail Idea:
We have been exploring the possibilities of using our single malts in cocktails, and have really enjoyed sharing our Whole Point and Ripple Rock Smash cocktails with people. We were delighted when BC Liquor released this video which showcased our Single Malt in their ‘Coastal Collins” recipe.
Coastal Collins – A single malt whisky cocktail, perfect for the warm summer months.
The Coastal Collins highlights the characteristics of the spirit. Complimented with a little sea salted honey cordial, and fresh ginger then finished with soda and a lemon twist. The overall profile will be both savoury and fresh, perfect for seaside sipping!
Want to make the Coastal Collins? Here’s the ingredients:
2 coins fresh ginger (about 1-in/ 2.5 cm each), peeled and sliced
1½ oz (45 ml) Shelter Point Single Malt Whisky
½ oz (15 ml) Sea Salt Honey Syrup*
¾ oz (22 ml) lemon juice
2 oz (60 ml) soda water
1 lemon peel, for garnish
*To make Sea Salt Honey Syrup, in a small bowl, combine ⅓ cup (80 ml) boiled water, ⅔ cup (160 ml) honey and ½ tsp (2.5 ml) sea salt. Stir to mix then transfer to a sealed container and store in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Makes 1 cup (250 ml).
We hope you enjoy this recipe, it’s a fantastic way to end a hot day!
Cheers,
Chris

Rain, shine, rain, shine…if you’re visiting our island this summer be sure to pack for every season as the long stretch of sunny weather is now tussling with torrential rain every ten minutes.
But, that’s the beauty of island life, there’s never a dull day, even on the dullest of summer days…
Here at the distillery our tours are in full swing and there’s a steady stream of visitors coming through our doors.
From cyclists and hikers to car drivers and campervanners – the island roads are a wee bit busier than usual, but polite waves and passing place etiquette ensure that rural road rage is never a thing.
Behind the scenes we’re busy filling bottles of our forthcoming single malt whisky by hand.
Each one is being carefully filled with this most historic of island drams, before being labelled and finally sealed.
It’s an exciting time, and we’re looking forward to revealing and raising a glass of The Hearach with you all this coming September.
Until then, we’ve enough Isle of Harris Gin flowing to keep you island spirits high.
Slaìnte to the coming weekend with best wishes from all the team here in Tarbert!
Le gach deagh dhùrachd,
Mike Donald, Chief Storyteller

Our first historic whisky is woven from the hands of island people and the place we call home, intimately intertwining to produce a spirit of great complexity and character.
Our close-knit community’s culture of gaelic language, storytelling, and song has long bound the Hearaich together, not only to each other, but to the elemental island around us.
This special connection between people and place continues to this day with every drop of The Hearach created by Isle of Harris hands here in the Outer Hebrides.
Be here at 13.00 BST on 22nd September 2023 to livestream ‘The First Dram’.
Join us online or in Tarbert at 10.00 BST on 23rd September 2023 to buy ‘The First Release’ in the UK.

The Hearach is the first, historic single malt whisky from the our small island sat off the far-northwest coast of Scotland.
It is the result of a considered conversation between people and place, coming together to create a spirit of complexity and character.
The work of our island’s men and women intertwines with the natural world to weave together an outer hebridean whisky of distinction.
Every drop of this new dram is being distilled by local people to produce a special spirit which has been matured, married, and bottled here in this elemental place, and nowhere else.

An exhibition of Madeira Mastery
Rich with the flavours of dried fruits, soft vanilla and warm wood spice, these special barrels contribute beautiful characteristics to our blended malt Scotch. A blend of fine single malts has been filled into hand-selected ex-Madeira wine casks to marry with the oak for a rich, warm finish. Each cask is imbued with character from years of holding Madeira wine under the intense sun of Portugal’s renowned wine-producing island. This blended malt scotch has shown to be very popular both as a dram and also as a highball. The succulent Mediterranean fruit notes coincide marvellously with the complex palate of saffron and smoky spices.

2023 SO FAR AT SPRINGBANK
As the first half of 2023 comes to an end we thought we would give our Society members an update on what has been happening at the distillery this year, what the team have been up to, and what to look out for in the remainder of the year.
MALTS FESTIVAL 2023
In May we hosted our Springbank Open Day as part of the 2023 Campbeltown Malts Festival, which brought whisky lovers from all over the world to the distillery to enjoy a wide selection of drams, unique tastings, demonstrations from our production team, and tours of the distillery among other events. Around 240 Society members joined the Springbank Sales Team in the Malt Barns for two blind tastings where we sampled core range Springbank with the twist of being matured fully in Bourbon casks.
We also released our annual Festival bottles, which this year consisted of a 24 year old Springbank matured in Sherry and Port, an 8 year old Longrow and a 14 year old Hazelburn, each matured in Sherry.
The dates for next year’s festival have now been confirmed as Tuesday 21st – Saturday 25th May. We hope to see you there!

SOCIETY ON TOUR
With Society members worldwide, the sales team have recently been globe-trotting in order to take the Springbank Society “on tour”. Since December, the team have hosted tastings in Frankfurt, Cologne, Vienna, Aberdeen, Hong Kong, Liverpool, Manchester and, last but not least, Campbeltown!
These tastings have been a great opportunity for us to connect with members and share some exciting drams. We hope that those of you who have attended one of these tastings enjoyed it as much as we did.
If you are interested in attending a Society tasting in your area, keep your eyes peeled for future tastings as the Society tour continues to make its way around the world. You will be contacted with details of tastings if/when they are planned in your area.
UPCOMING RELEASES & TASTING PACKS
In the latter half of 2023, we have some exciting limited releases to come such as the new Springbank 18 and 21 year olds, Longrow 21, the new Hazelburn Sherrywood, and the next edition of the Springbank Sherry series: Palo Cortado.
In our continued efforts to ensure that as many of you are able to sample these limited releases as possible at a time when it can be difficult to obtain bottles, we look forward to introducing tasting packs of limited releases later this year. These will be made available exclusively to Society members in the first instance, with the potential to be extended to non-members depending on demand. We trust that this will come as good news and will follow up with more information in due course.
DISTILLERY UPDATE
In our continuing transition from red diesel to liquified petroleum gas, six LPG tanks have been installed and hooked up to our boilers at Springbank and Glengyle, as well as to the kiln burner and wash still burner. We are hopeful that all works will be completed and up and running by the beginning of July. In another move towards becoming more environmentally friendly, we are looking into the possibility of installing Electric Vehicle Charging Points at the Distillery for visitor use.
We are on to the thirteenth term of our 2023 whisky school, which kicked off in February and will continue until the end of the Springbank production year. Hazelburn, Longrow, Local Barley and Springbank have all been produced this year so far, and the remaining production period will focus solely on Springbank.
We are in the initial planning phase for our new Bottling and Dispatch facility, which will be situated at Glengyle distillery but will accommodate bottling for the full J&A Mitchell range.
Once again, we have had barley sown this year at High Ranachan Farm which is based around 2 miles from the distillery. The variety this year is Westminster, which was last grown on behalf of the distillery in 2020 at High Ranachan and distilled with in 2021.

Varieties: Westminster (left) vs Bere (right)

The 2023 tour with Ingvar, my pal fae Sweden, so well thought of everywhere, great to see him again.

Saturday 15th April – met at Edinburgh Airport, drove to Glasgow for overnight. Grub, drinks and catch up. Marcus driving, myself and Ingvar in the back!
Sunday 16 April – over to Arran to see Lagg Distillery – a new one for me and the boys, I must say many thanks to Fred for coming in and opening on a Sunday! He was very good, full of info and no shy with the drams! Young peaty drams but really good! Great place, plenty of room for tours, drinks at the bar and food. Then away to Lochranza – due to health I sat this one out but it was a good tour, and aye, I did partake of the drams! We spend the night near Lochranza.
Monday 17 April – we took the early boat over to Claonaig and down to Campbeltown to see Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle. The Glen Scotia Distillery is one of the smallest Scotch whisky distilleries but one of the big names in Campbeltown, the former whisky capital of the world. It’s original design dating from the 1830s — including the mash tun, stillroom and dunnage warehouse. By 1835, it was one of almost 30 thriving distilleries in Campbeltown. Located at 12 High Street in Campbeltown (or as we refer to it, the Wee Toon), IAIN MCALISTER, MASTER DISTILLER took us round and supplied cask drams! The boys did the two others, I shared dram time once again! We stayed overnight here amongst the Campbells. A good time had at Ardshiel Hotel drinks/food.
Tuesday 18 April – over to Islay and Bowmore Distillery, the first licensed Islay distillery. It has stood on the shores of Lochindaal, a sea loch opening out into the wild Atlantic Ocean, since 1779. Some historians believe the name Bowmore, to be derived from a small black reef just outside Lochindaal, whilst others reference the Norse for sunken rock, bogha mor, as its’ origination. Overnight Islay in Bowmore. Quick thanks to Peter for all drams and gossip! The Bowmore Hotel has two bars and food.
Wednesday 19 April – 3 distilleries on Islay; Laphroaig – Donald and Alexander Johnston, who in 1815 founded their distillery on the island’s south coast. Laphroaig, so called after its’ location, ‘broad hollow by the bay.’ Lagavulin aye we were there even if someone wasnee! Dunyvaig Castle was once a naval base of the Lord of the Isles, chiefs of Clan Donald. It was held by the chiefs of the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg. A castle was built by Somerled, King of the Isles, on top of a fort or dun on a rocky promontory jutting into Lagavulin Bay. In 1614, the castle was taken by Ranald Og Macdonald, however it was retaken by Angus Og MacDonald, who attempted to bargain the castle’s surrender. Knox attempted to retake the castle in September 1614 and was defeated and compelled to retreat. The MacLeans refused to serve with him, and he could raise no more than seventy men, of whom fifty were waged soldiers and twenty followers of the lairds of Ardincaple and Ranfurly. When he landed on Islay, lacking any further armed support, the Clan Donald of Islay, outmanoeuvred him and cut him off from his boats, which they looted and destroyed. The next day Knox was told he should surrender the two hostages or all his men would be executed. Knox noted that the MacDonalds had built a new fort in the loch. A great lunch at Ardbeg – a tour with Colin Gordon and a chat and hug from Jackie Thomson. VISITOR CENTRE MANAGER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE ARDBEG COMMITTEE
ELIXIR DISTILLERS the in-progress Islay distillery, which is to be called Portintruan, first broke ground at the end of 2020. Located just outside the town of Port Ellen on Islay’s south coast, Portintruan is pronounced Port-nah-truan. A fab chat here we found out lots of info, looking forward to this one opening. Oh aye, we also dropped by the Kildalton Cross!
Thursday 20 April – Bruichladdich Distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers—William (32), John (31) and Robert (23)—on the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rinns of Islay, the westernmost part of the island. Another good tour, a theme on this tour, thanks to Ingvar. Founded in 2005, Kilchoman was the first new distillery to be built on Islay in over 124 years. Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder, set out to resurrect the grass roots tradition of farm distilling. Our 100% Islay range represents the revival of those traditions, standing alone as Islay’s only farm single malt scotch whisky. Very good visitor facilities, drams were flowing, many thanks. Jura 15.00 (we took the Port Askaig/Feolin ferry 14.15 and going back 16.55) a landing craft Marcus needed to reverse onto!!! Jura Prophecy, is named for the 18th century story of an old seer who, as she was being evicted from her home by the Campbells that dominated Jura at the time, foretold that the final Campbell on the island would have one eye and carry all of his possessions in a cart drawn by a white horse. That “prophecy” supposedly came true in 1938, when Charles Campbell, blinded in one eye during World War I, supposedly fell on hard times and had to leave the island in the state predicted by the seer. Great true story
Friday 21 April – Bunnahabhain Distillery, situated at the end of a small rough single track road, on the shores of the Sound of Islay, known for its spectacular surroundings and delicious signature unpeated Islay single malt whisky. It’s a hard road to drive but well worth it. Ardnahoe Distillery next, thanks ladies for the tea and cake, no to mention a dram or two. Caol Ila 12.30 just had major upgrade, very good visitor centre, aye well. We took the ferry from Port Askaig to Kennacraig and stayed overnight in Tarbert. Paul & Marcus; stayed around the corner, at one of the most weird places ever, clowns, dolls, muppets everywhere, 2 dogs, a garden full of weird stuff!
Saturday 22 April – drove Ingvar to Edinburgh via a quick call at Auchentoshan Distillery, a great tour once again. He had a few meetings and things to see, as usual, he flew home after two days there, see you again Ingvar!
