BOOST FOR DUNBARTONSHIRE AS CHIVAS BROTHERS REVEALS SAFETY AND COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PLANS FOR ITS KILMALID CAMPUS

BOOST FOR DUNBARTONSHIRE AS CHIVAS BROTHERS REVEALS SAFETY AND COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PLANS FOR ITS KILMALID CAMPUS

Chivas Brothers, the Pernod Ricard business dedicated to Scotch whisky, has revealed its plans to further develop and expand its world-class Kilmalid bottling site. The investment was granted planning permission over the summer and is designed to improve site safety, segregating HGV and Forklift Truck (FLT) traffic from pedestrians. Chivas Brothers will also work on the surrounding greenlands, protecting community walkways and ensuring easy access around the site for Dumbarton residents.

The initial work, which was completed within the existing campus footprint in October 2023, included building a new North car park that provides a safer and more convenient route for employees to access the site via a new entrance on Stirling Road. The focus will now shift to the South car park which will be re-laid and expanded. Supplementary work will include building new roads to enable the implementation of a traffic management plan that will improve site safety and make travel easier.

Public transport links will be improved as part of the investment, as well as diversifying the options employees have to travel to work. This includes public access footpaths, installing EV charging stations and adding cycle lanes and secure cycle storage. In the future, it will include habitat rehabilitation and improved public access from Dumbarton alongside the River Leven, which flows adjacent to the campus.

Liam Donegan, Manufacturing Director at Chivas Brothers said:

“This is the next milestone on our transformation journey here in Dumbarton, following the upgrades to our state-of-the-art bottling facility last year. This investment reflects the continued value and commitment we place on our people, as well as the communities we are a part of – more than half of the people working at the Kilmalid campus are local to the Dunbartonshire area.”

In addition to the immediate developments within the existing footprint of the Kilmalid campus, the planning permission incorporates 8.5 acres of surrounding land which was purchased by Chivas Brothers from Strathleven Regeneration CIC. The funds received by Strathleven Regeneration CIC, a ‘profit for purpose’ company, for the land sale will be put to good use for the benefit of the local Dumbarton community.

Bruce Malcolm, Chair, Strathleven Regeneration CIC said:

“We are delighted our most recent land sale has gone to such a major local employer to assist their expansion. It will secure local jobs and create new opportunities for the local area and allow us to re-invest the proceeds for added local impact. This sale absolutely cements Dumbarton’s role within the Scottish manufacturing economy.”

Chivas Brothers is one of the top ten largest employers in Scotland with a total workforce of 1,800 teammates across the UK. Over the past 18 months the business has created nearly 200 permanent operator roles, reducing its reliance on temporary resources and providing longer term job security for its people. Alongside the recent refurbishment of its Leven office in Kilmalid in 2022, the plans represent the largest transformations the site has ever seen.

Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton constituency MSP, said:

“This is very welcome news for the Chivas Brothers operation at Kilmalid, especially for the workforce. Chivas Brothers has a track record of expansion and the employment of more local people on permanent contracts is a real vote of confidence in our area. This development cements their commitment to the local economy which will benefit us all for decades to come.”

Chivas Brothers prides itself on an average tenure of 14 years for its team at Kilmalid, which fulfils a wide range of functions that support its vision to open up to shape the future of whisky. Further plans to revitalise the area with the local community in mind will be drawn up in due course and presented to the community for input.

Laphroaig “Allow us to introduce The Archive Collection” – Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky News

Allow us to introduce The Archive Collection, a limited series honouring the Distiller’s craft, patience and hard work.

The first release in our newest Collection is a 36-year-old single malt which brings a new dimension to the unmistakable flavour of Laphroaig.

This whisky’s journey began in the mid-80s and during its 36 years maturing, six different Distillery Managers have watched over it. Murdo Reed was Distillery Manager when the spirit was laid into casks. Over its 36 years, it has been watched over by Colin Ross, Iain Henderson, Robin Shields, John Campbell and finally Barry MacAffer.

Colour
Rich honeyed amber

Nose
Honey sweet with hints of white peach and mango, followed by creamy dark toffee, vanilla and cedar wood, then subtle oil of wintergreen and notes of singed sage and liquorice root

Palate
Zesty and sweet with orange and tropical fruit, mouth coating initially then moving to mouth drying

Finish
Warm and lingering to finish which brings out the peat in the mouth and the salt on the lips

Maturation
Matured in American oak casks and finished in a sherry-seasoned Oloroso hogshead, giving rich flavour and depth.

Sea glass is a rare find on the beaches of Islay. It takes years of weathering from the salty sea waves to turn the sharp edges of glass fragments into the smooth curves that can be found by the eagle-eyed once they wash up on the shores.

The Archive Collection 36 Year Old is also the result of many years’ work, sharp flavours gradually rounding into smooth as the liquid ages from its teens to its twenties and then to its thirties. Liquids of this age have been through many changes in flavour, but the quintessential Laphroaig taste of peat always makes itself known.

As our Master Blender knows only too well, preserving the peat and smokiness of a 36-year-old is a singular challenge that requires years of patience and intuition. From deciding which casks to use, to considering the weather and climate, a lot of thought and effort goes into the making of a whisky as special as The Archive Collection 36 Year Old – it’s as much a science as it is an art.

A BROAD SPECTRUM OF FLAVOURS

Laphroaig whiskies of this age tend to go through a ‘change curve’ of flavours, according to Distillery Manager Barry MacAffer. First come the red fruits in its teenage years, then tropical fruit flavours push the peat smoke to take a backseat in the twenties. By the time the liquid reaches its thirties, the fruity flavours from the ex-bourbon casks have really come into their own, and the smoky, peaty notes begin to come out of retireme.nt.

As one of our oldest releases yet, The Archive Collection 36 Year Old is full-flavoured and peaty with a salty edge. Its maturation happens in American Oak casks, with finishing in a second fill Oloroso hogshead adding layers and layers of subtle, complex depths. This whisky has a powerful character, but gradually unveils a surprisingly fruity flavour beneath our signature style with tropical fruit notes topped with dark toffee and sweet vanilla.

Distillery Manager Barry MacAffer could hardly contain his excitement at getting to taste this first release from The Archive Collection for the first time. This 36 year old is a striking and refined tasting experience, with its sherry seasoning making for a hearty, rich depth of flavour then, in Barry’s words, “right at the end the peat smoke reminds you – it’s Laphroaig“

Yellowstone “K&L Exclusive – The Perfect Proof” Single Barrel #12065 ~ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey News

Yellowstone “K&L Exclusive – The Perfect Proof” Single Barrel #12065 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) $59.99 View

Our first visit to Yellowstone’s distillery was one of our most memorable appointments from our May 2023 Kentucky tour. Steve Fontaine, the host of our visit, is one of the biggest characters in the wide world of whisky, and an afternoon spent tasting with him is an outrageously hysterical way to spend a few hours. The tasting itself is also one of the most unique in Kentucky. It is not only a barrel selection, but a proof trial. While many purists will argue that all single barrel programs should just be bottled at cask strength, the fact is, very few distilleries actually offer that option. Most lock you into a specific proof with your barrel. The end result: even if you’re tasting freshly pulled barrel samples, you’re not tasting the final product the way your customers will taste it. Yellowstone, really lets you dial it in – a tasting of four different barrels at three different proofs, partially blind (with respect to the barrels, but you taste in proof groups), ensures you get the best tasting option, not just the barrel with the craziest specs. With DOG, AW, and Blakely at the table making the selection, and remarkably, a consensus between the three on which barrel and which proof was the finest in the lot, we’re pretty damn sure you’re going to love this whisky.

Harris Is Back! – Scotch Whisky News

Almost eight weeks have passed since we launched The Hearach single malt and revealed our first historic whisky to the world.

From the raising of ‘The First Dram’ among friends at the distillery to ‘The First Release’ online and here in Harris, the launch weekend unleashed a whirlwind of which the dust is just now settling.

On release day, over 25,000 eager purchasers joined the online queue to secure our first 8 batches until supplies were exhausted in under five hours .

At the same time, over a thousand people queued happily outside the distillery to buy a first release bottle, travelling from as far away as Canada for the occasion.

Since then, we’ve release many more bottles to stockists across the UK which have also sold out in record time, with any last remaining bottles few and far between for those who hunt hard enough.

And, we’ve been bringing our island dram to over 20 countries across the world as our intrepid team travel far and wide to launch our dram at special gatherings from New York to New Zealand.

The story is just beginning however, and early 2024 will bring forth more batches of The Hearach single malt whisky as well as some special elemental explorations and expressions for you to enjoy.

Meantime, a heartfelt thanks to you, and those like you, who have made all this possible. Only in our wildest dreams did we imagine the ongoing successes of this special moment.

Slàinte mhor, and here’s to the best of Harris spirits!

We make The Hearach single malt whisky in batches of around 12,000 bottles, each to the same recipe. However, there will be subtle, natural variations between them which reflect the casks chosen and the length of time we ‘marry’ the vatting.

There’s a special combination of letters and numbers on every stopper seal which helps you to learn more about the dram in the bottle you’ve bought or plan to buy. Each code has an accompanying ‘batch sheet’ to help you learn about the way your whisky was made, read tasting notes from an islander, and enjoy a short story from Harris…

We are pleased to work with Uig Lodge Smoked Salmon again this year, by adding our historic first single malt whisky, The Hearach, to their exclusive smoked salmon hampers. They already offer our Isle of Harris Gin with its winning combination of maritime flavours, and this has been a popular gift for many, so we are delighted to grow the partnership with our whisky. Enjoy this lightly-peated, elegant island dram with its spirit of complexity and character while hand-prepared smoked salmon brings another element of deliciousness just in time for the gifting season!

Developed by Master Distiller Brian Kinsman, this is the only Scotch whisky to undergo ‘micro-maturation’. This unique process involves maturing the new-make spirit in small ex-bourbon casks for six to nine months, giving an intense, accelerated maturation, before being transferred to virgin, fist-fill and refill American oak casks for a number of years.
