K&L Notes: The Storyteller batch is made up of barrels from four production dates aged in different warehouses. The Storyteller is the fourth release of 2023 and an homage to 6th-generation Booker’s distiller Booker Noe. According to current, 7th-generation distiller Fred Noe, “The color of ‘Storyteller Batch’ is a rich amber with a golden shine. Sitting in your glass, the scent of a great bourbon fills the room and invites you to further explore the brown sugar aroma. The taste is delightful and well-balanced, with notes of vanilla and wood. I tasted this batch on a drizzly September day. There was a slight chill in the air, and it reminded me that fall is just around the corner, and this bourbon has the perfect warm finish for the days to come. A little bit of water further opened the tasting experience for me, but you can enjoy it any way you please. Storyteller Batch is just the way Dad would have wanted it when he created this brand over thirty years ago—I can almost hear him telling one of his great stories while he sips a glass of his own. Rare Perfection 14 Year Old Canadian Whisky

The Rare Perfection whiskies are just that—exceedingly rare and just about as perfect as whisky gets. The careful selection for this brand is unmatched in the industry. Nationality isn’t a factor; if it’s a true rarity and the whiskey is great, it can be bottled. It’s clear the palates making these choices are good, as this bottling is brought to you by the folks at Preservation Distillery in Bardstown, the same people responsible for bottling Very Olde St. Nick and Wattie Boone. This current release of Rare Perfection is a story of relationships and serendipity. The barrels for Rare Perfection 14 and 15 were found in the back of a unique warehouse when the new owners took stock of their purchase. Due to mutual friends in the business, the principals of Rare Perfection received a call about these sublime casks. After sampling them without any information they were blown away and asked for specifics. Turns out these ancient casks were made of new charred oak and filled with a Waterloo, a four grain bourbon mashbill distilled in Canada. They then aged in asingle level warehouse whith extremely cool temperatures maintained year round. Because of this atypical bourbon aging environment, the interaction with the wood was dramatically slowed and the final result after 14 and 15 years is indeed rare perfection.

W.B. Saffell Limited Edition Batch #1 107 Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (375ml) $49.99 View

W.B. Saffell is the newest in the Whiskey Barons’ lineup from Campari. It pays tribute to William Butler Saffell, who began distilling as a teenager and built his first distillery in 1889. This bourbon is inspired by the delicate spirit he produced at the time and is the first in the collection to have legendary Master Distiller Eddie Russell working on the spirit. A blend of Kentucky straight bourbons ranging from six to twelve years old, it’s non-chill filtered and bottled at 107 proof. The distillate is all made at Wild Turkey in Lawrenceberg, Kentucky with their 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley mashbill.

One of the rare age-stated bottlings from the iconic Heaven Hill distillery, it’s a killer sample of what made this benchmark brand so successful and popular.

K&L Notes: Here we have it! Bourbon aficionados will know that it’s extremely rare to find an age-stated whiskey from Heaven Hill, and that’s what makes the Evan Williams 12 Year Old “Red Label” such a discovery. Bottled at 101 proof, it’s an amped up version of everything the EW devotees love about this brand. The nose is dominated by classic tones of maple and brown sugar with a little bit of praline and toffee to take things even further into opulence. The rich palate conveys honeyed almonds, butterscotch, candied orange peel, and hints of fresh tobacco leaf. At this proof, there is heat to this dram, but the overall intensity of the profile more than stands up to the heat. This is a bottling that any fan of Heaven Hill should have behind their bar, in their cabinet, or stashed away for special friends or special occasions.

Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon (700ml)(European Import) $270.00 View

From Buffalo Trace Distillery, Blanton’s holds the distinction of being the world’s first regularly released single-barrel bourbon. This exceptional brand was launched in 1984 and named for the legendary leaders of that historic distillery outside of Frankfurt, Albert B. Blanton. The brand, which is produced and distributed by Sazerac at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, is owned by the previous owners of the distillery, a Japanese company called Age International. Over the last several years, Blanton’s has become one of the most sought-after and inaccessible whiskies on the market. This, their rarest and most elusive expression, is previously completely unobtainable. For instance, in 2021 K&L was allocated a measly 3 bottles company wide. Now that new regulations allow 700ml bottles to be sold, another channel is open for us to obtain this special whiskey. Each barrel is different, bottled at full cask strength without chill filtration of any kind. Proofs range from 115-135 proof and cask numbers cannot be checked in advance of purchase. This rare expression is truly one of Kentucky’s finest.

As groundbreaking as it is delicious, the collection draws on Japan, France and Spain, imparting regional influence through exacting cask management. The results are impressive.

First up is Glenfiddich 23 Year Old Grand Cru. This vibrant bottling was made using French oak casks that previously held a very special type of sparkling wine. A luxuriously complex release, apple, honey and soft spices on the nose give way to a brioche-like velvety palate. An exceptional whisky indeed.
